Software :: Allow CD ROM Sharing - Debian - Server - Blue Ray

Apr 4, 2011

I would like to have my CDROM on my server be shared by the group. My problem is, when I log into windows and "see" my server, it has the proper "Path" to my server, but for my "music" it has L:/server/music and for my CDROM it has M:/server/CDROM. This doesn't make any sense to me. It shouldn't be a "place" on the disk (or in this case a place on a CDROM).

It should be the CDROM itself, and whatever is on that CDROM should be accessible. Maybe the it should say something like: Path=hdc? or something that refers to the CDROM instead of a path to a "place on a disk?" In windows, my Blue Ray machine can see my shared disk. How can I allow Linex Debian to share its disk (or part of it) to the Blue Ray machine, so that I can play my music from the BR machine?

Server :: Read And Write File Sharing From Debian 5.04 To Palm Webos 1.4.5

Oct 12, 2010

I currently have a debian hpc server unit of 10 p4 computers running under debian lenny in use for serving my home network via pxe. I was wondering if there was anything I could use to allow the same read and write acces that is on my pxe machines on my new palm pre plus. That would save me the hassle of syncing all my documents and movies etc to my phone every day or so.

So basically what I am asking is if I can use the current 5tb nfs raid and mount it some way to a remote ip that I can access fully on my phone without the need for a flash plugin. Btw the phone is homebrew app ready.

Debian Multimedia :: Blue Windows In GNOME3 Shell

Oct 12, 2015

I have small problem with GNOME in Wheezy (trying it out just for fun). Whenever I start GNOME Shell and open any window, I get only blue color where windows should be. Entire window is just blue. Shell starts fine. GNOME Classic starts and works well too, even better than MATE in Jessie. My graphics card is old NVidia GeForce MX 440 8x AGP. I suspect it is causing problems.

Kernel is Wheezy's 3.2.

Found this: [URL] ....

I'm afraid I can't use GNOME Shell in Wheezy. Might try Jessie's version instead.

Debian :: Cannot Change Back To Basic Blue Grub Boot Splash?

Dec 17, 2010

I get the new boot splash with the nice little rocket and all but I seriously dislike it. While I don't stare at my computer as it boots, I do happen to see it from time to time. Unfortunately, I always see this new little rocket and I wonder where my traditional Debian blue with the swirl went. Yes, I know I am using Grub-Pc now, and I have tried to edit my /etc/grub.d file by renaming the wallpaper line to my preference.

But all my config file sees is "background-grub.png" which is the little rocket ship. So, I give. What is the secret code to unlock my grub config file or do I seriously have to muck around with Plymouth in order to have a choice in the matter? Just for those of you who contemplate counseling me on better time management instead of wasting my precious time over such a silly little thing, I agree. Not to mention that I use Debian because I like to build my system.

Fedora Installation :: F10 On Homebuilt Server - Screen Goes Blank And Freeze - The Blue Line Changing To White

Jun 4, 2009

Ive recently built a music server with the following configuration:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200 processor
Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 Motherboard with 2GB ram
Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB SATA Hard Drive
Samsung 22X CD/DVD Burner IDE

I would like to be able to run Fedora 10 (and Vortexbox, an application to burn and store CDs) but have been unsuccessful in getting F10 to load. I am a novice Linux/Fedora user. I've been able to load and run Windows XP on the server with no problem. I have downloaded and verified both the x86_64 DVD and the x86_64 Live CD from the Fedora website. With the live CD, the last thing that appears before the screen goes blank and the install freezes is the blue line changing to white. I have tried several different SATA configurations , have turned off all non essential options in BIOS(ethernet, USB support), and have tried loading with fail safe bios settings.

Debian :: Sharing A Lot Of Files

Jan 10, 2016

I have been a happy linux user for some years now, even at my work i slowly changed windows to Debian in my computer. I need to share files to others computers (windows 7 and linux).

I have debian stable, xfce and samba whit a public folder. This setup has worked great whit a reasonable number of files ( under 1000) but now i have almost 10.000 and is getting too slow to scan the files when i enter the folder (in the client side, both windows and linux machines) so i think the problem is in the server side (my debian+samba). The files are not heavy (100kb to 2mb) the problem seems to be how much files there are.

Sharing IS WORKING but i would need it to be FASTER, So i need to share the files whit 4 pc running different OS

Ideas:

1) i could tweak samba to make a better job. I have tryed some configurations i found in forums but problems remains. I read that i could make a cron job to LS to the network folder every minute, so it will be ready when i need it, but this solution seems to me very inefficient, using a lot of cpu in the others machines

2) i could change the sharing software. Maybe samba is limited and there are others better way to share a lot of files. I could even install a debian-server version that is more prepared to do this job (if they are)

3) I could buy a router whit a usb 3.0 and attach a external hard drive. I already own an external hard drive that is usb 3.0. This should be more easy and even better (router never turn off so files would be always avaible) but i dont know if this will be faster or slower until i try it, which means to spend money. I could buy the router linksis Cysco EA6200: [URL]

Server :: Sharing Files Via The Internet?

Jul 30, 2011

I have a non-profit company. Currently we are using Dropbox to store and share files. We have the free 2 gig account and we are quickly running out of space. Naturally, we don't have a lot of money so I'm looking for a cheap alternative. I thought I might be able to set up a linux server in my home (with a back-up drive) do to the same thing. I want my board members and staff to be able to access these files from their homes or jobs and to be able to manipulate the files on the server. I'd like to be able to control access levels so that I can limit access to certain files and folders. I have a tech background but none of the others do so FTP is not really an option. It needs to be as simple as if they were looking at a file on their pc. Is this possible or am I totally dreaming here?

Right now I'm using Ubuntu but I just downloaded Fedora 15 and plan to play around with that a bit. The pc's I have are P4 2.6 with 1G RAM.

Debian :: Sharing External USB Drive To Everyone

Mar 4, 2016

I have a little ODROID C1+ ARM box with Debian Jesse installed on a SD card. I am trying to share an entire external USB NTFS drive to all clients (Windows 7, Android) on my network. I had this working until a few days ago when I reflashed an updated distro. Now I can't remember what black magic was involved. iptables is not installed and no firewall is active.I have installed Samba and Caja-share. I have edited the fstab

Code: Select all#4TB Seagate
UUID=*edited*
/media/odroid/Seagate404TB
ntfs
rw,users,permissions,auto
0 0

with the understanding that this would allow permissions to be assigned and saved for NTFS partitions. I then used chmod to assign everything on the drive to nobody:nogroup as I recalled this was necessary from when I last got it to work.SMB.config is currently set as

Code: Select allworkgroup = *edited*
[Seagate 4TB]
path = "/media/odroid/Seagate 4TB"
writable = yes
force user = nobody

with no other changes. The folder /media/odroid/Seagate 4TB has been created. I have right-clicked this folder and shared with Caja-share

Code: Select all[x] Share this folder
Share name: Seagate 4TB
[x] Allow others to create and delete files in this folder
[x] Guest access (for people without a user account)

but so far all I get in Windows when I try to access the share is a prompt for credentials, which is what I want to avoid.

Ubuntu :: Sharing NTFS Folder Via FTP Server

Mar 31, 2011

I feel like there's some user/group/mount concepts I need to understand to pull this off: I have a dual boot ubuntu/XP rig and I'm storing some active work files on an NTFS partition because so I can use these files from both OSes (because Windows can't read my ext3 partition, but ubuntu CAN read NTFS) Now, I need to access these files (on the NTFS partition) from my 2nd computer... which means I need to config an ubuntu FTP server (currently pureftp, but I'm not picky) to serve the files on that NTFS partition.

Like I said, I'm using PureFTP, but I'm not picky. It's not working right because of (i think) permissions and directory ownership "stuff" that I don't quite understand. Add "mounting" the NTFS drive to the mix, and my brain fails. I'm not too terribly afraid of a non-GUI ftp server, so if anybody can offer some guidance, concepts or general clue-sticking about how I can get the NTFS mount and permissions and the ftp user context sorted out

Server :: Easy File Sharing On Windows... Without SMB?

Jun 16, 2010

Question for the sys admin types:So, say you want to do file sharing in an environment with a lot of Windows clients, but you want the shared data on a Linux server. You can use SAMBA, and that will make all the Windows clients happy (provided, of course, that you can get SAMBA working correctly). But is this your only option?I mean, obviously you can use ssh/sftp. But the Windows sftp clients I have tried don't make the file sharing process as simple for non-techies: you either just get a command-line, or you get some kind of two-pane application view like with filezilla or cuteFTP; it isn't as integrated into the desktop as what you get when using native SMB file sharing. So, is there Windows software you can install that can make the file sharing experience very non-expert friendly with some protocol like ssh/sftp or NFS?

Debian :: Sharing Firefox / Iceweasel Profile With Win 10.1

So on my computers I have Linux/OSX + Windows

Typically I have housed the FF profile (and TB for that matter) on the NTFS partition. This has worked for many years and so no matter which OS I load, I start of at the same place I ended.

But since I installed Win 10.1, I don't use Windows that often, but when I do I feel that for some reason, FF is not picking up the profile info. Add-ons are missing. Session restore not the same. (There are similar issues with TB as well).

Debian :: File Sharing Via Mapped Directory ?

Dec 13, 2010

My friends and I want to have a central server where we can share our files. I would like it to be accessible to each client (friend) by simply logging onto their VPN client and have the shared directory appear on their "My Computer" as a hard drive. It will be a Debian Lenny server that is accessed by Windows computers, and they'll be able to read and write whatever they like.

We do this same thing at work, but I don't know where to start. To access the file server at work from home, I just run our VPN client and I have access to all the drives I do at work. This is exactly what I'd like to do, but at my place. I'd like to know what applications I need to get to make this realizable, like if I need to use Apache, Samba, OpenVPN, etc. I can learn fast, I just need direction.

Eventually I want to evolve this project into something more, but I figured this would be a good starting point in learning server applications.

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Sharing On A Makeshift Server?

May 19, 2011

i'm trying to rig up my machine as a household server, i had it sharing internet to my other computers via a wifi router. (machine is a desktop and i have no wifi cards for it)then i installed java, squid and SAMBA. since then the other machines can't detect internet. java is screwy.i've updated it and it reduces the screen scramble.but squid is what has me.it seems to stop ubuntu telling my windows machines (win 7, and win xp) that there is internet available.intrestingly i can play multiplayer games on the windows machines with a ip address.(ip address of a mate. connected and ran ok.)

system specs
ubuntu 11? (i know it updated from 10 a few weeks ago)
internet - DODO mobile broadband (piggybacks on yes optus australia)
wifi- via router connected to eth0

so someone know how to either

1. get ubuntu to state it's sharing internet again. or

2. turn mobile broadband off for 5-10 secs, re-enable, then connect to a mobile broadband called DODO automatically when internet drops out (a script perhaps?)
