I have a CentOS + Samba server and Windows XP client machines. Users, passwords and permissions are entered on the server machine.users and passwords ( same as on the server ) are entered in the XP client machine. When attempting to access a public file on the server using a XP client machine and the IP address of my server, I am asked a user name and password and none of the already entered seem to work. I cannot access the server file (prompted again and again to enter user name and password). What did i miss

I have a network (192.168.x.x) that I want to keep closed and private for the most part. I need however to get access to some files generated on the machines in this private network. So I first tried putting two cards in a machine running centos 5.2 and connecting one to the private newtork and the other to the public network. This worked somewhat but I was not able to see this bridging machine in the private network because I could not run 2 samba instances on this machine ( I need one for the public network). So I setup xen on a machine with the 2 NIC's and assigned one card to the host dom and the other to the guest dom which was connected to the private network.
This worked ok, but the only issue was the shared disk space. I couldn't use nfs because each machine operates in a different subnet and I don't know how to export a nfs drive across domains. So I created a logical volume on a disk and mounted this in both domains. This works some times,. but at other times I copy files from the private machine to the shared volume but i can't see them from the other domain. Also sometimes the guest domain which houses the private network server hangs during boot up saying that the logical volume has been assigned and cannot be mounted.
1) Is what I'm doing using logical volumes across domains legal (best practise, etc)
2) Is there another way for me to achieve what I want (sharing a disk partition across domains).

I am pretty frustrated with Ubuntu security partially because I don't know exactly how to fix things in it like I do windows and you can't always use GUI with Ubuntu which is quite annoying. Basically.. I created a samba share. When I copy files from my Windows machine TO the Samba share the permissions are always screwed up. I can watch the videos but I can't delete them. I have to go into Nautalis? via F2, sudo something and change permissions everytime I copy something into the shared folder. To me, this is stupid.
Another issue... I added a 2nd hard drive to my Ubuntu machine, shared the entire drive. Once again.. when I copy files to the share I can only read them.. I have to keep stealing ownership so to speak over the files. Now, when I want to CUT and PASTE from my Drive "C" Ubuntu to my Drive "D" I dont have access. Ugh... why can't there just be a way to make all files accessable.
Why should I have to pop into a different program to regain permissions everytime. When I create a folder it should STAY that way. Anything I copy into it.. its MINE. Just because I copy from another machine onto THIS machine, I am still the creator of that folder. I SHOULD have access to EVERYTHING in it.

But I don't know what's happening? is it a good idea to use some IDS on server..would it be a overhead for server?

I have just configured Centos 5.5 LocalMailServer with fetchmail and sendmail , Proxy with Squid and FileServer with samba. Now my concern is security.. How can i protect my server with outside attack. Will I need to block some ports or I need special tools or script so no one from outside can attack my machine. My machine is working on intranet with local ip only.. No web server or static ip exists. Machine is connected with ADSL router to access internet.

I just put the latest updates onto My CentOS 5.6 server. It started life as a 5.4 Server, then the upgrades took it to 5.6.
The latest updates did a Kernel Update and the server sent me two messages : -

I am trying to wade through the semanage jungle to get permissions for a tftp client. I followed the HowTos [URL] but I get the following at the client:
tftp> status
Connected to 192.168.1.101.
Mode: netascii Verbose: off Tracing: off
Rexmt-interval: 5 seconds, Max-timeout: 25 seconds
tftp> get hello.o4
tftp: hello.o4: Permission denied
I finally figured out that the firewall directives shown at the end of the HowTo refer to semanage although the options are stated incorrectly according to the man page for semanage. I did insure that the file hello.o4 in /tftpboot has read permission for everybody.

I have several Proxy severs set up at our business. I always do the same basic config, except for my version of Fedora (I always grab the newest).
I put 2 nics in a machine Load Squid, Dansguardian and Firestarter. I use Firestarter to direct the surfing traffic from my LAN out a cable modem that I have for each store. This lessons the bandwidth on the T1.
Easy enough. My problem is Firestarter has always been a little flaky. But as of F11 the gui wont stay up for more than a few minutes at a time. It still functions, but you have to be quick if your going to use it because it will inevitable crash.
So I suppose it's time to start doing this the correct way and using IP Tables. Does anybody have a resource they can point me to that will help me understand how to do this? It looks like this might be as simple as setting it up with the GUI Firewall tool that comes with F12 but I'm still not exactly sure how.

How does network file sharing work in Ubuntu? Is it only enabled for the Public folder? Or does it vary by folder permission settings, specifically in that folder's 'Properties' and allow others access the folders?
I'm asking because someone at my work may have had a complete breach of their personal files in the /home/ directory from their folder permission settings. I want to know if regardless of everyone having access permission to the folder, if they need to drag it to the Public folder for it to be network shared.

To be clear: I searched and used the button above to find similar topics, but my solution wasn't there.
I was very busy with work the past months, so my quest to become a Linux Crack hasn't borne too many fruits yet So I am still a ...
So here is my problem:
I have 3 users on my CentOS VPS:
root
user1
user2
For security reasons I only log on via public key, root access is denied. Admin is user1. user2 is a regular user.
I want user1 to be able to additionally access user2's home directory, when I log in via SFTP using FileZilla, because occasionally I want to move files from user1's home directory to user2's home directory. But I need user2 to still be able to connect to his home directory via SFTP, too (everything I tried up to now always "breaks" his account).
How do I do that?
user1 is in the wheel group in order to be able to become root if necessary.
user2 is in the user2 group.
I tried adding user1 to the user2 group, but that alone doesn't seem to give him access to user2's home directory.
I know this must be about rights and permissions, maybe group permissions? I sit on it about 8 hours now and don't see no light at the end of the tunnel. When I think I got it I suddenly can't log in with user2 anymore (neither PUTTY nor FileZilla).

I put together a 3 PC cluster approx. 6 years ago with Redhat, at that time I was in Grad. School. Now I am in a small company and we are planning to go for a cluster setup. I have chosen to go with Centos5.
The last time around I used NFS, RSH etc. for file sharing, communication etc. Would it be OK for me to go with the same stuff or some new software/technology has come in.
The Centos cluster setup is for high-performance computing.

I am fairly new on CentOS and am in the process of setting up a small home office network that shares Internet access through the Linux (CentOS) box.I have two network interface cards The Linux box is also the DHCP server. My challenge is to get the client machines to access the Internet! I have a PPP connection to the ISP. Essentially I followed these Instructions CENTOS REDHAT Internet Connection Sharing. Pretty straight forward but I am still not able to get clients to access the Internet. I defined the DNS server through DHCP (196.44.x.y). I assumed it has to do with default gateway and it is set as follows: on the Linx box the gateway is my ppp0 link. DHCP uses eth1 (LAN card) fixed IP as the gateway. All clients are reflecting this information. The firewall (iptables) is reflecting the FORWARDING and POSTROUTING rules as advised.
Is there a step I mioght have missed to get this working? I tried to Google but its not getting me far.

I am setting up a Beowulf Cluster using CentOS 5.5. I have the head node with two NIC devices eth0 and eth1. eth0 is the one that is connected to the WAN while eth1 provides the internal LAN connection. I am trying to configure internet connection sharing with the slave nodes on the network so that I can update/install software as needed via ssh sessions using yum. I have set up the master node with the requisite changes to iptables to enable IPv4 forwarding. From my slave nodes I can ping ip address from the terminal, but my domain name resolution is not working. i.e. if I ping [URL] it can not resolve, but if I ping 74.125.224.50 (one of google's IP's) I can communicate with the machine without a problem. I also ran the configuration tool provided in the README section of the forum on the slave node and the master node. The links are:

I have a non-profit company. Currently we are using Dropbox to store and share files. We have the free 2 gig account and we are quickly running out of space. Naturally, we don't have a lot of money so I'm looking for a cheap alternative. I thought I might be able to set up a linux server in my home (with a back-up drive) do to the same thing. I want my board members and staff to be able to access these files from their homes or jobs and to be able to manipulate the files on the server. I'd like to be able to control access levels so that I can limit access to certain files and folders. I have a tech background but none of the others do so FTP is not really an option. It needs to be as simple as if they were looking at a file on their pc. Is this possible or am I totally dreaming here?
Right now I'm using Ubuntu but I just downloaded Fedora 15 and plan to play around with that a bit. The pc's I have are P4 2.6 with 1G RAM.

I feel like there's some user/group/mount concepts I need to understand to pull this off: I have a dual boot ubuntu/XP rig and I'm storing some active work files on an NTFS partition because so I can use these files from both OSes (because Windows can't read my ext3 partition, but ubuntu CAN read NTFS) Now, I need to access these files (on the NTFS partition) from my 2nd computer... which means I need to config an ubuntu FTP server (currently pureftp, but I'm not picky) to serve the files on that NTFS partition.
Like I said, I'm using PureFTP, but I'm not picky. It's not working right because of (i think) permissions and directory ownership "stuff" that I don't quite understand. Add "mounting" the NTFS drive to the mix, and my brain fails. I'm not too terribly afraid of a non-GUI ftp server, so if anybody can offer some guidance, concepts or general clue-sticking about how I can get the NTFS mount and permissions and the ftp user context sorted out
