Debian :: File Sharing Through LAN Between Debian & WinXP
Jul 12, 2011
when I was using Windows XP, I could copy files from my PC into the shared folder of another PC (with WinXP), through LAN, both conected to a router.now I'm using Debian Testing, but the other PC still has WinXP, and I have no idea how to access the shared folder of the Windows box, from my Debian box... but I found out that this type of file sharing is done through a protocol developed at Microsoft, but supported by Samba, only I don't know how to configure smb.conf so I can access the shared folder on the Windows box, and to copy files into it
Suppose I have installed a Ubuntu (UNR9.10) PC in my home LAN,-> am I right that I need to have Samba server installed before I can share folders & files (mainly large media files) in the harddisk of Ubuntu PC for read/write access by other LAN PC running WinXP?
-> am I right that Ubuntu PC cannot access (read or write) USB harddisk nor USB thumbdrive as formatted by WinXP? how about SD card through USB card reader? does UNR v9.10 contain Samba or do I need to install it separately after UNR installation? where can I find the instruction for installation and configuration of the samba server?
My friends and I want to have a central server where we can share our files. I would like it to be accessible to each client (friend) by simply logging onto their VPN client and have the shared directory appear on their "My Computer" as a hard drive. It will be a Debian Lenny server that is accessed by Windows computers, and they'll be able to read and write whatever they like.
We do this same thing at work, but I don't know where to start. To access the file server at work from home, I just run our VPN client and I have access to all the drives I do at work. This is exactly what I'd like to do, but at my place. I'd like to know what applications I need to get to make this realizable, like if I need to use Apache, Samba, OpenVPN, etc. I can learn fast, I just need direction.
Eventually I want to evolve this project into something more, but I figured this would be a good starting point in learning server applications.
I've been searching this forum and the rest of the web for days now for a good software for a CLI Debian installation that will take links to file sharing sites such as Rapidshare, Megaupload, Uploading, DepositFiles etc and download them when possible (wait for timer to run out and so on).The only thing i've found so far is Slimrat but i dont seem to get it working with WWW::Mechanize even after trying to update it through CPAN
I'm using Gnome for the first time (after a long time with KDE) and am trying to share a folder the easy way. After installing nautilus-share (and samba, samba-common and samba-common-bin)I can right click on a folder and make it shared. Problem is that the option 'Guest access (for people with no user account)' is always grayed out.On some Ubuntu forums I saw people fix it by purging and reinstalling samba but that didn't work for me.I know how to manually setup a share in samba, just want to figure out why this isn't working and how to get this going.
I have a win XP box and want to share files on this win XP box In Ubuntu 10.10 I previous used, I just connect the win XP sahred folder via file browser without any username and password. In my Debian Squeeze, when I connect to my win XPIt poped up a window and asked me the username and password. But I don't set any password in my win XP even my administrator account. How can I do to make my connecting to win XP smoothly like the Ubuntu does?
I currently have a debian hpc server unit of 10 p4 computers running under debian lenny in use for serving my home network via pxe. I was wondering if there was anything I could use to allow the same read and write acces that is on my pxe machines on my new palm pre plus. That would save me the hassle of syncing all my documents and movies etc to my phone every day or so.
So basically what I am asking is if I can use the current 5tb nfs raid and mount it some way to a remote ip that I can access fully on my phone without the need for a flash plugin. Btw the phone is homebrew app ready.
I have an Ubuntu laptop running 10.04LTS. I want to share its printer with a WinXP laptop. How do I get WinXP to find and use my printer connected to an Ubuntu 10.04 laptop over a wireless network?
I've been searching on google but the only solution seems to be to change the name of the files (which didn't work). Is there any way to remove the banner? I'm not 3yrs old I know how to share files and don't need to be reminded where i can receive files.
I have a WinXP machine that is monopolizing a perfectly good monitor. I would like to use that monitor in my Debian Multiple Monitor setup. Is there a way that I can operate my WinXP machine's desktop remotely from a Gnome window on my Debian machine? In this window I would like to be able to see and use the desktop of the WinXP installation on the other hardware platform just as if I were on the WinXP machine itself. I use Synergy already to share the keyboard and mouse. Hearing about Remote Desktops suggests to me that this might be possible. If it is possible how is it done? What software / hardware is required to accomplish it? Are there any "secrets" that I need or should know of to make this work?
I have been a happy linux user for some years now, even at my work i slowly changed windows to Debian in my computer. I need to share files to others computers (windows 7 and linux).
I have debian stable, xfce and samba whit a public folder. This setup has worked great whit a reasonable number of files ( under 1000) but now i have almost 10.000 and is getting too slow to scan the files when i enter the folder (in the client side, both windows and linux machines) so i think the problem is in the server side (my debian+samba). The files are not heavy (100kb to 2mb) the problem seems to be how much files there are.
Sharing IS WORKING but i would need it to be FASTER, So i need to share the files whit 4 pc running different OS
Ideas:
1) i could tweak samba to make a better job. I have tryed some configurations i found in forums but problems remains. I read that i could make a cron job to LS to the network folder every minute, so it will be ready when i need it, but this solution seems to me very inefficient, using a lot of cpu in the others machines
2) i could change the sharing software. Maybe samba is limited and there are others better way to share a lot of files. I could even install a debian-server version that is more prepared to do this job (if they are)
3) I could buy a router whit a usb 3.0 and attach a external hard drive. I already own an external hard drive that is usb 3.0. This should be more easy and even better (router never turn off so files would be always avaible) but i dont know if this will be faster or slower until i try it, which means to spend money. I could buy the router linksis Cysco EA6200: [URL]
I have a little ODROID C1+ ARM box with Debian Jesse installed on a SD card. I am trying to share an entire external USB NTFS drive to all clients (Windows 7, Android) on my network. I had this working until a few days ago when I reflashed an updated distro. Now I can't remember what black magic was involved. iptables is not installed and no firewall is active.I have installed Samba and Caja-share. I have edited the fstab
with the understanding that this would allow permissions to be assigned and saved for NTFS partitions. I then used chmod to assign everything on the drive to nobody:nogroup as I recalled this was necessary from when I last got it to work.SMB.config is currently set as
Code: Select allworkgroup = *edited* [Seagate 4TB] path = "/media/odroid/Seagate 4TB" writable = yes force user = nobody
with no other changes. The folder /media/odroid/Seagate 4TB has been created. I have right-clicked this folder and shared with Caja-share
Code: Select all[x] Share this folder Share name: Seagate 4TB [x] Allow others to create and delete files in this folder [x] Guest access (for people without a user account)
but so far all I get in Windows when I try to access the share is a prompt for credentials, which is what I want to avoid.
Been trying for a couple days know to get my laptop to work with my 360 so I can use the internet connection from it so I can go online. I access the internet using my Nokia E72(ppp0) and I intend to use the laptop's ethernet port for the 360(eth0).
Tried this out [url] and a bunch of other guides which I can not find right now. Running Debian Testing and have no idea what to do next.
My server's hostname is 'cookhome'. I am wanting it to broadcast over my network so I can just use that name instead of the IP address, but it isnt working. I am unable to ping it from any other computer./etc/hosts
Is there something that has changed from Windows 10 to Windows 10.1?
So on my computers I have Linux/OSX + Windows
Typically I have housed the FF profile (and TB for that matter) on the NTFS partition. This has worked for many years and so no matter which OS I load, I start of at the same place I ended.
But since I installed Win 10.1, I don't use Windows that often, but when I do I feel that for some reason, FF is not picking up the profile info. Add-ons are missing. Session restore not the same. (There are similar issues with TB as well).
I would like to have my CDROM on my server be shared by the group. My problem is, when I log into windows and "see" my server, it has the proper "Path" to my server, but for my "music" it has L:/server/music and for my CDROM it has M:/server/CDROM. This doesn't make any sense to me. It shouldn't be a "place" on the disk (or in this case a place on a CDROM).
It should be the CDROM itself, and whatever is on that CDROM should be accessible. Maybe the it should say something like: Path=hdc? or something that refers to the CDROM instead of a path to a "place on a disk?" In windows, my Blue Ray machine can see my shared disk. How can I allow Linex Debian to share its disk (or part of it) to the Blue Ray machine, so that I can play my music from the BR machine?
I was just doing the normal stuff, working with my raid-setup. Then I needed to reboot. I did that, and then my internet sharing just stopped working?I remember I just did aapt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade && apt-get autoremove && apt-get cleanbefore booting, and I just dont rembember if that said anyting crucial, but I really dont think so. Anyways, my LAN i working, all my LAN computers speak with each others, and I have internet (...) on the server. But my sharing just doesnt work. This is how I share my internet:
I'm trying to shift from Windows to Linux I tried Ubuntu, but I was happy with it, so now I'm trying Debian. I installed the version i386 on an amd64. Since I still have to use XP I would like to share my Mozilla profiles. I followed the instruction I found on the web which worked well for Ubuntu/XP, but now I'm not able to get a working configuration on Debian Every time I launch Firefox/Iceweasel I get the message "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." I've tried to fix the problem following the instruction found in [URL] and other websites, but I failed. Firstly I tried with Iceweasel then I installed Firefox, but it didn't make any difference!
I have a folder, called Vault, that we want to share only with certain people. Because it will contain confidential information.
I want the unix group trustees to have read-only access I want the unix group administrators (and root) to have read/write access
All other users should have no access.
the implementation I have so far is: folder owner: root:administrators folder permissions: 770 section from smb.conf
[Code]....
However, this is not working as expected. It currently works as follows:
Normal user: No access (expected) Trustees member: No access (fail. Trustees should be able to read) Administrators member: Read/write access (expected)
I have an nvidia card and a motherboard with an internal sound card.
The nvidia card hogs alsa, and it's really obnoxious because I don't use hdmi for audio (or video, for that matter, crt all day)
I would normally just blacklist the module that the card is using, but I hit a hiccup...
This is the readout for the gfx card from lspci -v
Code: Select all01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation Device 0fbc (rev a1) Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Device 84bb Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 25 Memory at fe080000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K] Capabilities: [60] Power Management version 3 Capabilities: [68] MSI: Enable- Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+ Capabilities: [78] Express Endpoint, MSI 00 Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
And this is the readout from the motherboards internal audio card
Code: Select all00:14.2 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. Since they have the same kernel module, all the internet advice is pretty much moot, because I can't figure out how to effectively shut off one without killing the other as well. Huge PITA.
I just installed Ubuntu Remix 10.04 on my wifes MSI U100 netbook. I did a dual boot just in case she had to get into Windows for something. I let the install automatically partion (did the side by side option). Anyway, Ubuntu works fine and imported all her documents and stuff. Problem is Windows XP won't boot. The first time I tried to boot Windows XP I got a message saying the hardware had changed and I had to select safe mode, normal boot, last known good, etc... I booted normally. I got the splash screen followed by a quick flash of BSOD and a reboot. I does this no matter how I try to boot Windows (safe, command prompt, etc). Anyone have any idea what the problem is?
Someone on IRC had mentioned they had a shared partition in NTFS, and that Ubuntu could read from it just fine... I wanted to get a second opinion before I did anything. Right now I have a WinXP partition and an Ubuntu partition, and a large NTFS partition in the middle that I'd like to move my /home to.
I have tried searching for the same problem but can't find it. Close but not exact. I have a dell optiplex I use for internet surfing. I do a reformat every few months to get the junk off it.I do a reformat to clean the drive and load XP PRO then load ubuntu 7. or 8. It gives me the option to use either at start up.
I did it a few weeks ago and it has been running fine until I did updates of both XP and ubuntu. When I it fired it up Win XP worked fine but when I choose ubuntu I would get the corrupted or missing hal.dll error and it wouldnt go any further. Several reboots with the same result XP works but not ubuntu.I did a reinstall of the hal.dll file using XP disk for repair according to britec on ..... (but I didn' t do the second step yet). Now I still get the corrupted or missing hal.dll error when I try to get into ubuntu and if I choose XP it freezes. I try going into safe mode and it loads but (wireless) mouse/keyboard won't work.
I have squeeze with gnome and vino-server installed. Howto activate "Remote Desktop Sharing" at the login mask, so I can put login and password per remote.
