Software :: USB Stick Not Working In 9.10 Version?

Nov 8, 2009

I have installed Huawei USB stick with version 9.04 and it was working well. After updating to 9.10 I hava got a lot of problems. Connection is Ok but when I try load any page it gives message "server not found". Some times it can load a page after many trials. Reconnection does not help. I am sending this message with same stick using Xp in same room so the problem is not in the stick itself.

Debian Installation :: Get The GDE Version Of Installed To A USB Stick?

May 31, 2011

What I have done so far with Debian: I used dd in Ubuntu Lucid to put the Debian live GDE version onto a USB stick, and I successfully booted my Toshiba Mini with it in under a minute! That even blows Easy Peasy away! I love the simplicity of the DE. For now I want to get the GDE version of Debain installed to a USB stick. (That is, I will use the live USB that I created to direct the installation to a USB stick that is plugged into the computer).

What I think that I know: I was successful to use a live Ubuntu Lucid USB to install Ubuntu Lucid to both a USB stick and an SDHC card, and that is what I am running right now. I have encountered issues with this process, such as apparently the /dev/sdx that was recognized during install being different when I try to boot the new stick, and I only happen to eventually mysteriously boot after, say, trying a different USB port. My main concern is a functional internet connection, otherwise I will be helpless when I try to confront any other kind of Debian problem, and of course I will soon want to begin installing packages. In Ubuntu Lucid my wireless card was nonfunctional, and I spent two weeks working on finding a "solution", which was something I believe called a Personal Package Archive, my first and only use of such a thing.

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:lexical/hwe-wireless
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install rtl8192ce-dkms

As far as I understand the first command, as with much of what I do with GNU/Linux, I must simply trust the benevolence of the package provider that their code will not ruin my hardware. The firmware issue does disburb me a bit, and it seems that Toshiba and Realtek or whoever is responsible would like to require me to use Windows in order to configure my wireless card. (That seems like it should be illegal.) Thank god I did manage to find a completely GNU solution, and thank the community for always being there trying to provide solutions like this.

So, appologizing for that overly elaborate introduction: Are there any pitfalls that I should avoid in the process of installing from the live GDE Debian USB to another USB stick on my Toshiba Mini, or if this is even possible in Debian? Is there a more appropriate solution to get my wireless card to work (instead of using the PPA mentioned above)? For instance, the wireless light never changes from amber to green (which I guess is what should indicate that the card is connected or not?), even though I am obviously connected to the interent (here I am). How do I force the installation to recognize my USB more primitively/reliably than as a /dev/sdx file (which seems to be quite dynamicly allocated from one boot to the next)?

Ubuntu Networking :: Stick On Network Manager 0.8 Doesn't Work - Restore Karmic's Version?

Feb 26, 2010

I added a repo from launchpad to install latest Network Manager and then installed it (version 0.8). Then I decided to rollback to Karmic's version (since 0.8 doesn't work) but failed: I removed the repo from sources.list

Then apt-get udpate
Then apt-get clean
Then apt-get install network-manager...

But still 0.8 version is downloaded and installed! How can I restore Karmic's version?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: EyeTV For DTT (USB Stick) Not Working?

May 12, 2011

I just bought a new USB DVB-T receiver: Elgato EyeTV for DTT.

In the following chart:url

it is listed as supported out of the box, which is not the case.

When I connect the stick, the only message I get is the following:

May 13 00:15:26 micasa kernel: [16969.930122] usb 2-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4

So I guess I will need to mess up with patches, kernel modules, firmware files, etc.

Please, is anybody using this receiver or the Hauppauge WinTV-NOVA-T (which is said to be a clone)?

OpenSUSE Network :: Huawei E200 Usb Stick Is Not Working In 11.3

Sep 3, 2010

Although my Huawei e200 usb stick is working well under ubuntu, its not working in openSUSE. I think the udev rule provided by the vendor is suited for a debian system and not for openSUSE. When i see the dmesg output, it adds driver for ttyUSB0 and as soon as it adds it also removes it. This sequence goes on continuing till i unplug my usb stick from my computer. The udev file(78-haier.rules) provided by the vendor is as follows:

ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEMS=="usb",
ATTRS{idVendor}=="201e", ATTRS{idProduct}=="1008",
ATTRS{bNumInterfaces}==" 1",
RUN:="/usr/sbin/haier.sh 201e 1008"
ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEMS=="usb",
DRIVERS=="option",
ATTRS{bInterfaceNumber}=="00",
SYMLINK="ttyMODEM"

The haier.sh script that the udev runs is as follows:

[Code]...

# may not use this driver if the product id is already compiled into another driver modprobe -a option echo "0x${VID} 0x${PID}" > /sys/bus/usb-serial/drivers/option1/new_id

Ubuntu Networking :: Vodafone Payg Usb Stick Not Working In 11.04?

May 3, 2011

I have a Vodafone (UK) PAYG USB stick (Huawei K3565 v2) which worked perfectly out of the box in 10.10. I also installed Betavine Connection Manager but never actually needed it. Since upgrading to 11.04 the stick won't connect. When I plug it in I get a green flashing light then a blue one but it never registers with Connection Manager. Nothing I can do tweaking the settings seems to make it work either.

Ubuntu Networking :: Telstra Mobile Broadband - Turbo Stick Not Working

Apr 7, 2011

I have an acer 532h aspire one, running ubuntu 10.04.

Basically, I bought a Telstra Turbo USB broadband stick and I've been having a bit of hell getting it to work. First I couldn't get the computer to recognize it had been plugged in at all. I downloaded the modeswitch packages to no avail. I tried a few other terminal tweaks but they didn't change anything either. I left the card in and restarted the netbook and it finally recognized the wireless card. I was able to surf the internet for an hour or so a couple times. But after stowing the computer away for a couple hours and turning it on again, I found that this work around was no longer effective. So now I'm back to the blue light never blinking and I have to tether my phone and pay ridiculous data charges because I'm in the middle of nowhere.

I'm really new at troubleshooting things that don't work right out of the box.

It's a telstra turbo prepaid wireless broadband. The stick isn't even recognized as removable media.

Ubuntu :: Microphone Not Working - 64 Bit Version?

Oct 15, 2010

Before Intrepid external microphone and sound was working fine with my Creative Labs CA0106 Soundblaster audio card. Once I've installed Intrepid, the microphone ceased working but went on without it hoping that Karmic will fix this issue. Currently in Karmic, the microphone is still not working and I'm also having problems with the sound output (not using the same PC though). I have 2.1 PC speakers and it doesn't sound right, voice or other certain channels are clogged, lower in the back. Once switching on headphones, sound output is fine, clearly stereophonic.I went through the Karmic debugging, sounds problems wiki page and other HOW-TOs but still no fix for me and I would love to have my speakers music back. Attached to this message, the ALSA Information Script (.sh file) output.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Live CD And Live Stick Not Working

Apr 28, 2011

Live CD: I dowloaded the ISO, burned it to CD, booted from this CD. It starts to load and I can see the purple background with the loading icons. Everything seems normal. But instead of ending up with the login screen, it ends up with a screen that says 'Please remove all bootup media and hit ENTER' or something like this. So I hit enter and then it shuts off my computer. That's it.

Live Stick: So I tried another option and created a stick with 'usb-creator.exe' that is on the CD. Then I start from that stick, but all I end up is a line of 'Syslinux bla bla copyright 20xx-2011'. That's it. Then it does nothing anymore. The cursor is blinking, but no prompt or whatsoever and keyboard input doesn't do anything.

Now something weird: When I insert Live CD and Live Stick at the same time and then boot my computer, then it boots into Ubuntu. Obviously it loads the first parts from CD and then the rest from stick. Because when I'm then in Ubuntu and try to format the stick, it says it can't do so, because there's system files from that stick in use.

Fedora :: Programs Not Working (Version GCC_4.2.0 Not Found)

Oct 15, 2009

New to fedora and a bit stuck atm. I got Fedora 11 installed ok and working fine. I then installed Oracle, Adobe Reader and Opera. All seemed to go ok. On booting the machine today, it booted fine, but when I click on places->computer or places-network or firefox or the file browser all I get is the arrow with the ring spinning around it for a bit and then nothing.

So, I tried to start up Firefox from a terminal and I get:
/lib/libgcc_s.so.1 : version 'GCC_4.2.0' not found (required by /usr/lib/libstdcc+.so.6)

I get a few errors when I try and start opera, but one of them is the same as above. I tried nautilus - same thing. I'd be willing to bet it's the same for places->computer and places->network but I don't know how to start those up from the terminal. Part of the install instructions I followed have almost certainly caused it, but I don't know how to reverse them, this is what I did:

"unzip Oracle_Access_Manager10_1_4_0_1_linux_GCClib.zip

This gives you 2 files:
libgcc_s.so.1
libstdc++.so.5

Now move the libgcc_s.so.1 file to /lib/libgcc_s.oracle.so.1
sudo mv libgcc_s.so.1 /lib/libgcc_s.oracle.so.1

And the most important one:
sudo ln -sf /lib/libgcc_s.oracle.so.1 /lib/libgcc_s.so

(Even after the ldconfig command is given in the reboot fase, the link for /lib/libgcc_s.so remains!)

Then you have to rename the /usr/lib/gcc/i586-redhat-linux/4.4.1/libgcc_s.so to /usr/lib/gcc/i586-redhat-linux/4.4.1/libgcc_s_so
Otherwise /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 will be used in link and not /lib/libgcc_s.so, therefore the link will fail

Now you can start the installer by
./runInstaller.sh
And the linking will succeed."

Debian Hardware :: RTL8187 - Ndiswrapper Isn't Working (64-bits Version)

Oct 7, 2010

My laptop has a Realtek 8187b usb wireless card. It was working using ndiswrapper and WinXP driver in Debian Sid (32-bits version). I cannot use rtl8187 module because I just can use it beside the access point. With Windows (XP, Seven) I can go to my bedroom and use wireless, with Debian and rtl8187 module I can't. Ndiswrapper solved this problem...

Yesterday I've installed Debian Sid (64-bits version) and ndiswrapper is not working anymore. I've tried a lot of drivers (XP, XP64, Vista, Vista64, Seven, Seven64). XP64 version crashes the computer and I need to reboot to use Debian again. My access point is a D-LINK 2640t.

Ubuntu Servers :: New Version - Not Good Working Samba - Only With One "trick" Get Access

Apr 29, 2010

installed the 9.10 Version of ubuntu. Now the situation is: Four Computers are running under Windos XP-professional SP3 My computer, the fifth has ubuntu as os After the upgrade to ubunto 9.10 (with the newest updates installed today) I`m unable to access the windows network. Shows me only windows network but when I click on it no list of workgroup is shown and therfore the network cannot be connected

Only with one "trick" get access: connect to server, then putting the ip's of th windows computers I've got connection to all allowed dir of all the four windows computers (location: smb://ip-adress) To install a network printer is impossible neither with cups nor with system-> adaministration->print At my computer is one printer which works fine. the other printer a Xerox Phaser 6110 is connectet to one XP computer and is configured as network printer under Windows. The computer (IP-Adress is found but that is all) Printer is not connected.

Trying now for three days I'm really upset because there is one golden rule: Never touch running Systems! But you folks from ubuntu must bring ever second day some updates. Nothing against this, but configure your updates in that manner that the updates don't change all my settings. When I boot my computer with windows-XP all network computers are there and usable. My Samba config is ok too because otherwise I would not be able to connect to windows computer through the above mentioned trick.

General :: Which LXDE Version Has The Newest Version Of Firefox And Open Office

Sep 17, 2010

Which LXDE version of Linux has the newest version of Firefox and Open Office included?

I am looking for an iso file, and I am trying to run this off of a live CD for now. So I want a light version of Linux, probably LXDE, or if not, then probably XFCE. But I need a new version of Firefox and OpenOffice included.

Because, I tried burning the customizable NimbleX @ custom.nimblex.net . Pretty good, except it uses Firefox 2, and Open Office 2.3, which are outdated.

And I tried Mint XFCE, which might have been pretty good too, but it had some issue of blanking and requiring relogin after I opened hotmail frequently (user id: mint, password: blank).

The web browser and the word processing program are the most important and essential applications to me.

So are there any Linux versions in LXDE on LiveCD that include newer versions of Firefox (or at least another good browser) and Open Office (oo seems better than abi)? (Again, if no LXDE, perhaps XFCE?)

I just want to download a good version in an iso file, and burn it to a CD and get to work. Like I said the web browser and the word processing program are all important.

So really, what iso/LiveCD versions are the fastest for running on an older system, and yet have the newest browser and word processor included?
