I have a problem with my gui . i have I810 onboard graphics . it says something like ( agpgart not there ) celeron 633mhz old machine 256 mg ram 20gb master and 7 gb slave . first drive is debian 2.4 and slave is winxp . i also have a lt winmodem i would like to get goin . i cant seem to figure out how to mount the floppy . i tried vi /etc/fstab but cant figure out the lingo .when i loaded it before i had everything working ,kde , floppy ,sound, but no modem .im totally stuck in command line (witch is fun ), because my cdrom went out so i cant just reload debian. i hope this makes some kind of sense to someone .
View 5 Replies View RelatedI can boot up ubuntu but it's just showing the default background, the login prompt won't come up. What do I do? Startx doesn't work in the terminal (ctrl-alt F1), it gives an error. I can log in as root (recovery mode) and startx works and the desktop comes up though.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI was trying to install the nvidia drivers then when I reboot all I get is a command line. Startx does not work, it says no screens found. I was dumb and uninstalled the nvidia drivers too not realizing my internet didn't work in the command line. I need to install the drivers from the live cd unless there is another way. I don't want to have to reinstall!
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm having a pretty serious problem, whenever I try to boot into Ubuntu the screen goes black, I see a flash of purple or violet and then i get a prompt asking for my login credentials, afterwards I'm stuck with a terminal trying to start the gui... I don't know what I'm doing wrong, fresh install tried to reboot after getting the display driversinstalled idk if that could be a problem. I tried to commands in the terminal already:

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install the magnificent ubuntu 10.10 on my brand new Dell LATITUDE E5510. The installation works fine. I installed it with a working internet connexion ... so the drivers should be there. Then when booting, the GUI does not start I get the console instead...
I tried several things:
- run startx --> I get a blank screen where even CTRL+ALT+F1 does not work anymore

--> just returns without anything on the screen, no error no nothing
- run in failsafeX mode, I get:
Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure them yourself.
Then I get the login page but it doesn't go any further, when I type my login/password it comes back to the login page...

is possible to edited the default RHEL CD to have it automatically install RHEL based off of a kickstart file that I will store locally on the CD. My plan would be to put a cd in a server and have the OS automatically being installed.

View 1 Replies View RelatedInstalled Debian 6 (latest stable, downloaded today) i386 under VMWare 7.1. Installed VMWare tools. However, when i activate Unity my mouse won't work at all in guest OS windows, it will only work as if i was pointing to guest desktop. It is all ok in Workstation window.
Unfortunately, there is no xorg.conf, and when i attempt to re-create it using Xorg -configure, the resulting file is unusable, i.e. system freezes when i test it (using X -config /root/xorg.conf.new) and if i just cp into /etc/X11/ GDM fails to load, and manually typing startX in command prompt i get "fatal error no screens detected".

I got an opensuse 10.2 on a aged desktop. Once start, it just stops at command line login prompt. I have to login and type 'startx' to get the GUI. Since I haven't used this computer for over half year. I couldn't remember what I did last time. Any tips for this problem?
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading several packages (can't remember which now) I can't login with the graphical login. It accepts the password, starts to load, but then dies and dumps me back at the login prompt again.Attempting to login from the prompt, sometimes works (there is specific condition), and when it does, I then attempt to "startx". OK, it complains the display is already in use, so I then "startx -- :1". Everything starts to load, but then fails again like the graphical login.

i can't use kde because the startx and xorgsetup commands are not found (from root account). i know i installed x and kde, documentation doesn't say anything about specifying a path, locale and whereis don't show a path. what should i do?

I just finished an install of Slack64 current and it's crashing when I try to start up KDE. I tried setting the VESA framebuffer to 'normal' in /etc/lilo.conf, but no dice.

I'm having trouble installing F11 x86_64, and I'm sure it is something to do with the video card.X will not even start if I have both nvidia quadro FX1700's installed. If I take one out, I can install F11, but it always 'hangs' when it starts X (which is to say, both the keyboard and mouse are locked - until I press the power button, but then it shuts down anyway).I've fiddled inittab so it starts in runlevel 3 so I can at least get in and tinker. There is no xorg.conf in /etc/X11, so I assume the system is building it's own and not quite getting it right (guess work based on other threads with similar symptoms).
I can connect to the system from another Linux machine via ssh, and I can ftp to it. I tried copying the xorg.conf from the other machine, but while it changed the screen resolution (ergo, it had some effect), it still went nuts. Starting X remotely via ssh allowed me to trap the messages, which indicate the lack of HAL has something to do with the problem.service --status-all reports hald stopped; I'm assuming this should not be the case. I've used yum to reinstall hal, but that made no difference. Nor did an update - it was already at the most recent level.F11 was installed from a DVD downloaded vai a bittorrent; the disk checked out ok.
My knowledge is limited, and I don't know what should be in xorg.conf for my machine, although I could type it in from scratch or ftp it across from here. It was 'okay' under F10, happily tolerating both video cards. But it seems to be sulking under F11. In case it matters, I'm doing everything as root; since firstboot starts X, I can't use that to create another userid.
- nomodeset, xdriver=vesa, selinux=0, remove rhgb as boot parameters - all to no avail (although these changes seem to be ignored for the most part anyway);
- start the HAL daemon manually (mine failed to start, as others have reported). It didn't like that! (the output is available, but is enormous)
- startx -configure - simply failed;
- dirconf didn't work;
- I've tried swearing at it during start-up, which turned out to be no more or less successful than anything else, but it was fun.
Intel Q6600 64 bit. Twin nvidia Quadro FX1700 cards (one removed for the time being) driving two 1920x1200 monitors each. Please let me know if there is any other relevant information I can supply.

Installing f10 on an x86_64 platform from CD or netinst. I can't seem to find a way to have it install i386 compatible (32-bit) software at the same time. Is there a repo that has to be enabled? In f8 i think it was just a box to click somewhere.

I am trying a test net installation in VirtualBox, so far so good.
However, I would rather have a more complete installation on hand and I'm looking at the full install cd's --there are 6 of them.

Are all 6 required for a minimal install, or could I get by with one (or two, etc)? For example, with debian installation cds you can use just the first one -- the rest are just a complete set of packages for everything +kitchen sink.
