I am using Ubuntu 10.04 on a dell desktop box. In Firefox, find that after it has run for a while, a couple of hours or so, the audio dies watching ..... or ted.com videos, etc. If I exit ff and start it up again, the sound is fine again for a while. To restore it, I only need to exit and restart the browser, not the whole machine. I have tried using google chrome instead but it does the same thing. Any suggestions?
View 5 RepliesAfter installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing,zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.
I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.
a week ago, i updated my computer from ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04, and since then, no sound plays from any browsers (i've tried firefox, which has been my main browser for years, and epiphany web browser, which seems to be the linux equivalent to internet explorer). i'm still able to play videos videos, but i get no sound from them. however, mp3's, skype, and audacity all work just fine; i just can't get any sound from my browser.

View 7 Replies View RelatedCan anybody give me a clue why there is no sound when I watch videos via any player or browser?, I've installed "restricted formats codecs", (well I did it many times for GNOME desktop of 11.3 SUSE and it was ok), now when I've installed KDE and downloaded these codecs, there is no sound in any video media I play. Audio card seems to be working and configured just fine, then it should be codecs, but what else can I install instead?

For some reason, no sound seems to come out of any Internet Browser. Other than that, it works fine. So far, I've tried Google Chrome and Konqueror.
Sound from other applications is fine. I have tried removing and reinstalling the flash packages but it did not help. Any ideas on how to trouble shoot this further? I am running 11.04 64bit. It was working fine earlier but something seems to have screwed it up.

I have tried to uninstall everything flash on both of them and then downloading flash from Adobe and reinstalling. I am having a HARD, PARTIAL FAILURE OF SOUND on my Linux system (Slackware 13.1, the latest, with a 2.6.33.4-smp kernel and KDE 4.4.3). The failure is "HARD" in the sense that once it occurs it remains broken until I reboot the system. It's a "PARTIAL" failure in that it affects ONLY SOME sound software on my system. Here is a list of what fails and what doesn't. (I'm sure there are other programs I could use to test with, but I don't know what they are since I am "just an average user" when it comes to multimedia software.)

Amarok
KDE event notification
These do fail:
Firefox
Xine
Mplayer
In the things that fail it is only the sound portion of whatever (flash, mp4, etc) which goes away; the video portion plays normally.n I leave my system up for days at a time. The failure occurs some "long-ish" time (days) after I reboot. I have no idea what triggers it. I do not use sound most of the time, but when I do it's music through Amarok (which doesn't fail) so I do not notice the failure when it occurs.
It seems clear to me that it is NOT the failed programs which are at fault but it is, rather, some underlying set of sound libraries and/or servers used in common by all the programs which fail, and that the failure occurs when something happens which affects that set of sound libraries and/or servers. I don't think this is specifically a Slackware issue since I've seen a few other problem reports on the web where the sound simply stops on non-Slackware Linux systems. Some of the problem reports I've seen suggest that playing sound from one program stops sound from other programs. I've tried various combinations of sound-producing programs but none have triggered the problem.
I've looked at /var/log/{messages,debug,syslog} and see nothing relevant. I've gotten process lists from ps before and after the failure and no "relevant" processes have gone away. (But note, as before, that I am NOT a Linux "multimedia guy" so I can only make intelligent guess at what is "relevant".) Does anyone know what this problem is and, better still, how to solve it? Or where I could look for additional clues? Is there some way to "reset" the sound system without having to reboot?
I just installed Audacity and as soon as it's done installing all sounds (speakers and headphones) go off. As soon as I delete Audacity and reboot everything works fine again.

On top of this I have installed xorg and awesome window manager. The only problem I am having is with sound; I am unable to hear sound played through both browser-based Flash and locally stored files.
Is there something that I have to do before I can use sound? Edit: I have solved the original problem however I would like to know if I can remove pulseaudio as it seems that I am only using alsa.
I just updated to 2.6.33 kernel and I am using an Intel Mac with ubuntu 9.10 running native. I upgraded because the new kernel has sound working for the imac (at least through headphones). Once the kernel was updated to 2.6.33 the proprietary NVIDIA graphics driver which I had activated through systems -> administration -> hardware drivers is now inactive and will not work. systems -> administration -> hardware drivers says to look in /var/log/jockey.log, here is the last part of that file [URL]. PLEASE HELP OUT. I hate using the Mac os on the other partition.

View 7 Replies View Relatedi just updated from karmic 9.10 to lucid 10.04 using the online upgrade option. so far everything is working great. the only issues i am having seem to involve firefox. when i visit videos i get the message "your browser is no longer supported. please upgrade to a modern browser." i am running 3.6 "canonical" so it is "modern". i am able to watch videos after i close the message. it's just an annoyance to get this message every time i view a video.
next, is on some websites (like this one) it will not supply my login info. but on a few sites (like ebay) it does supply my login info. not sure why some sites work while others don't. the info is there when i look under my saved passwords....
I'm surfing along just fine when I select some link in my browser.The status line reports "... waiting for ..." and the browser seems to stall for a long time (minutes). Often, but not every time, I can select the STOP toolbar icon and reload the page. This time things work normally.
I have a similar but different malfunction running Evolution email connected to my hosted IMAP server. I select a message and see "... formatting ..." and then Evolution seems to stall for a long time (minutes). Rarely the stop-reload actions help reading email. Instead,all Evolution windows go dark grey and the entire desktop stalls.[Analysis -- It has the feel of a "network" issue provoking issues within Evolution itself rather than an Evolution-only malfunction.]
Watching the running system with 'htop' and similar, I do not see where some other application or service is sucking all of the available CPU time or such. [Analysis -- It has the feel that either the browser message or the email message were sent into limbo without reaching their intended destination. Stop-reload sends the bits to the right places and so I get results.]

I was in the middle of a skype test call when the graphical mixer level died down to zero in the middle of the call. When the test call was played back, the first part sounded fine then the sound got lower until it became inaudible. Since then I can't get any sound from my mic in skype.
Also, the audio input level graphically shown in Sound Preferences shows no fluctuations in sound as it used to before. The input device is enabled. I tried using Sound Recorder to record some sound clips and that worked fine. So the mic is working but Sound Preferences and Skype seem to have the mic level really low. I'm not sure what else to think considering it was working perfectly a few minutes ago. I've tried restarting, but that didn't fix it either.
I bought a Diamond Xtreme Sound 5.1 sound card because I had read online that this card was a good choice with Linux and came with universal driver software. I installed the hardware correctly (as it works with WinXP) but I'm not able to get it working with Ubuntu.

I did an independent verification of the DVD and zero errors found. Download was from Fedora's own torrent, so files should be verified anyway.
