Software :: Selecting A Wma File Will Start A New Instance Of VLC With No Sound

Mar 21, 2010

(Using Lenny.) And where is the VLC manual? Help button just has "about". Synaptic must have it under some other name than vlc doc or vlc manual.

Back-ground... just inherited moderate amount audio files, the mp3 files would play and wma files would not play. Installed ffmpeg, not sure if that fixed it.

1. selecting a music file in the directory will start a new instance of VLC, even when there already is one(vlc panel) displaying.

2. Selecting a wma file will start a new instance of VLC with no sound. However, using the VLC file menu and selecting a wma file from a directory will play sound (sounds pretty good too for cheap speakers).

3. Not sure what I did, but now the VLC is playing every tune in the whole directory, { cool, I discovered how to play tunes all day} but closing the VLC pane doesn't turn off the music. Or at least tell me how to turn off the player.

CentOS 5 :: Flash Plugin Doesn't Start On First Firefox Instance

Ubuntu :: Links From Widgets - Task Bar Shows An Instance Of Konqueror And Another Instance Of Firefox

Feb 15, 2010

I have KDE 4.4 and Firefox 3.6. Whenever I click a link from a plasmoid widget, it tries to open Konqueror and another instance of Firefox. The page actually loads in the opened Firefox window, but the task bar shows an instance of Konqueror and another instance of Firefox, that keeps loading for a while then close. See image below:

I currently have setup the browser default application as "firefox". If I set this option to use the default application, it opens in Konqueror and I don't see additional windows in the task bar. If I change the option to "firefox %u", then it exhibit the same issue, but the process is much faster, so the loading windows don't stay for long in the task bar. Additionally, it opens the link on a new Firefox window and opens the page twice. Although Konqueror is not loaded, the bouncing icon next to the mouse pointer shows up and stay for a while.

Ubuntu :: Selecting Certain File Types By Extension

Mar 6, 2011

I am trying to move files from one folder to another based on their file extension. I can do it with a single extension, but I want to match multiple.

Example:

This works, but I want it to not only match mov, but also mpg, flv, mp4, etc. I would think something like [mov, mpg, flv] would work, but it doesn't.

General :: Selecting A Font When Printing A Text File From The Command Line?

Jul 29, 2011

I don't understand why this is so difficult. In the old days, there was lpforms which allowed some formatting. CUPS did not see fit to implement this into it's lp package.cgi-...-cgi?lpforms+1In the old days, lpr allowed you to select a font in the command line with -1=fontname. CUPS did not see fit to implement this into it's lpr package.htmIn the old days, printers had fonts installed on them that you could access. Modern printers don't seem to have this. So now I still need to be able to select a font when I print certain text files from the command line but it seems this is impossible. I've been working with instances and lpoptions, which allows me to do a lot of other things I need like orientation and margins and even set the font size, but I still cannot choose a font other than the default.

OpenSUSE Network :: Instance Attempting To Write A File From The Localhost?

Jan 17, 2010

This is a follow-on to "samba write failure crashes linux". It has the dmesg output when the write failure occurs. The remote server is os/2 v4.50 fp3.The failure occurred in this instance attempting to write a file from the localhost to a samba-mounted resource on a remote host. The failure always happens when at least 3 MB have been transferred. Smaller files are not a problem.

Other cases:
1. Saving any email (thunderbird) attachments to the localhost,
2. Downloading anything to the localhost using Firefox.

The most notable aspect are the phrases "kernel BUG" and "invalid opcode".

General :: Script To Insert Number Of Lines In A File To The Start Of The File?

Sep 17, 2009

I'm looking for a way to insert the number of lines in a file to the start of the aformentioned file. This should be simple but as I am not used to scripts in Linux, I am finding it tough going. I can find the number of lines in a file easily enough via

filesize=$(awk 'END {print NR}' $1)

but as for inserting this into the first line, i'm failing to do so. I've tried some of the other approaches on these forums but none so far have been able to do so.

I've tried:

sed '1i$filesize' $1

but sed i requires a string, not a variable so no go I've also tried:

mv "$1" "${1}.bak" 2>/dev/null || touch "${1}.bak"
cat $filesize "${1}.bak" >"$1"

but again with no luck as cat seems to need an input stream Just to recap, i want to insert a line at the start of a given file that holds the number of lines the original file has.

ie the file:

a
b
c
d
e

should become:

5
a
b
c

SUSE / Novell :: No Sound After Start-up?

Sep 17, 2010

I have a default OpenSuse 11.3 system with KDE4 and alsa and an Asrock 4coredual Sata2 motherboard with intergrated audio. I configured audio by yast2 after installation of the system, and it was working. But: anytime I re-start the system, a message pops up after start-up, asking if I really want to remove audio device this and that, and no matter what I choose, there will be no sound.

I can only get sound again by:

- running yast2,
- deleting the audio device configured,
- adding the same device, and setting the volumes again.

It is rather time consuming to manually re-configure (remove and add) audio after each system start-up.Another issue: there is absolutely no way to configure skype to be able to use the microphone input. What I speak into the microphone it goes to the loudspeakers (connected to the front speaker output), but never to skype. The only way to get skype capture mic input is to configure the front speaker as a microphone input device is skype, in which case skype captures all sounds that go to the loudspeakers, but in this case sound is overly distorted. Sometimes muting channels other than Mic and Master in kmix does not work either.

Is there a way to get a working audio in today's developped linux distributions, especially SuSE 11.3, or that is the past, like convenient file managers and useable desktop?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Applications Cannot Start Sound After Switch User?

Nov 5, 2010

With OpenSuSE 11.2, I would have a guest account running skype, and a media account running mythtv (both users logged in at the same time using switch user). I had skype on auto answer incoming calls, and I remember watching a movie when I suddenly heard my Dad's voice appear calling my name. That was cool!

Now that I'm using OpenSuSE 11.3 (both were using KDE), skype only plays audio when that user's session is active. Switching to the media account will prevent skype from starting to play any sound. Switch back, sound is normal. If I remember correctly, now the skype audio cuts out as soon as I switch user.

I also have a tv capture card which only STARTS to captures analog audio when the media session is active, mythtv being run by the user media. Once the show is started to record with sound, we can switch users and the show continue to record with sound.

The only thing that should be configured differently from the default install is that I compiled mythtv (it wasn't available as an rpm when I upgraded to 11.3, and haven't bothered to check since).
