General :: Closing File While Leaving Instance Of Gedit Open
Apr 19, 2011
If a file is opened from the common prompt with something like:
gedit somefile &
Is there a way to close somefile while leaving the instance of gedit still open? My idea is that sometimes I will have more than one file open in gedit. I run a script daily that updates to a log file. The log file is then opened and viewed with gedit.

I know GEdit has a bug which prevents it from opening a file with null () characters in it. This is a huge inconvenience for me because I frequently have to open big log files with only a couple rogue 's in them.
Sometimes I just run a quick tr -d '' < file.log > file.log.correct and open the correct file. This is a big nuisance. I would like to have maybe an external tool in GEdit that would execute the above command. I tried writing an external tool action (GEdit plugin) using just:
#!/bin/bash
tr -d ''
Input is "current document", output action is "replace current document". But this isn't working. When I open the file, GEdit shows the familiar red warning; activating the external tool with the warning showing apparently has no effect (I think the script is being called but its input/output are not set).

Is there a way to identify and close a given instance of an open nautilus window from a command line?
Or can one identify via a command line that a given instance is open?
I'd like to tag one when it is open with a specific title and then if that is already open not open it again all from the command line.

Ok, so I'm trying to do this: [URL]
The problem is, when I get to the part where I have to open the file in gedit, it says it can't open it, file not found, or something or other..So, when I manually browse to the directory '.local/share/..' there is no folder named 'applications,' only a text file. When I open it, it appears to be the home launcher file, but its in the wrong place and has the wrong name. What's going on? Shouldn't there be a folder there with my applications in it?

How do I get rid of this new tab when I open gedit with some file? Because that tab has "*" in it which means I need to reject save-confirmation every time I exit gedit.

I have a script almost working except for 1 thing. What I'm trying to do is read a file that has the files that need to be FTP'd using a bash script. I have everything working except the reading of the file. It works outside of the ftp script I've wrote but once I put it in the FTP script it doesn't.
Here's the Script:
#Here's where the problem is that I know of
I've been playing w/ the exclamation points to see if that could be the problem, but so far no luck.

I'm trying to use tigthvnc (with ssh tunneling) in order to acess remotely my parent's kubuntu desktop. That way I'll give them some support when I'm at my home or office.
Practically I hadn't used vnc with linux, but I recall having used with windows. In linux when I logged to the remote machine (which runs vncserver) it's opens a new instance of X server. I'd like to access to the X session that's already opened. Let's suppouse my parents are logged into X with the user: john. I'd like to access john's session, to see and check his applications. In one word I'd like to vnc in linux behaves the same way as windows.
Is that possible with vnc? I'm using tightvnc. I tried -shared option in client, but no success.

When a new instance of a running KDE 4 application (kwrite, konqueror, etc.) is run under opensuse 11.4 with KDE4 it seems that the default behaviour is to open a new tab in the running instance.
This occurs when the new instance is called from the command line; the start menu; the run dialogue; or a desktop icon, even when called from a separate desktop. In konqueror the menu option <File> <new window> opens a new tab and seems redundant.
How can a user force KDE 4 applications to run a new instance in a separate frame / window when another instance of that application is already running?

This is probably a stupid question, but I haven't been able to figure it out on my own.
If I run Amarok and then click on Amarok -> Quit, the main Amarok window disappears but a tray icon remains:
How do I open Amarok again?
Choosing Amarok from the main menu does nothing. Running amarok in the terminal produces:
multi@aux:~$ amarok
Amarok is already running!

I have KDE 4.4 and Firefox 3.6. Whenever I click a link from a plasmoid widget, it tries to open Konqueror and another instance of Firefox. The page actually loads in the opened Firefox window, but the task bar shows an instance of Konqueror and another instance of Firefox, that keeps loading for a while then close. See image below:
I currently have setup the browser default application as "firefox". If I set this option to use the default application, it opens in Konqueror and I don't see additional windows in the task bar. If I change the option to "firefox %u", then it exhibit the same issue, but the process is much faster, so the loading windows don't stay for long in the task bar. Additionally, it opens the link on a new Firefox window and opens the page twice. Although Konqueror is not loaded, the bouncing icon next to the mouse pointer shows up and stay for a while.

I have read many tutorials and guides on how to apply authentication to SMTP on postfix and so far had no look making it work, I do have authentication on dovecot on the pop3 and IMAP servers I have been trying to make this work now for on and off 3 months now and am completely stumped I am running my own server with a dynamically IP address but I have a DNS service to give me a fixed domain name which works. as I am on a dynamic IP I can't send email to external accounts as they need to to through a relay host but I cant set that up until there is some form of authentication on the smtp of postfix even if its just plain-text
originality I ran a windows server with hmailserver which was so easy to setup and use
I have postfix, dovecot, sasld installed
below are my postfix main.cf file and I can post my dovecot if needs be
Code:
# See /usr/share/postfix/main.cf.dist for a commented, more complete version
# Debian specific: Specifying a file name will cause the first
# line of that file to be used as the name. The Debian default
# is /etc/mailname.
#myorigin = /etc/mailname

I have a few .txt files that when opened in gedit give me an error "Could not open the file - gedit has not been able to detect the character encoding" HOWEVER, I can see some of the contents of the files (a few words) in the icon preview in nautilus. Also, I can open these documents in notepad (using wine) though I'd prefer to use gedit.
These might not all be txt files. I know one is directory of important phone numbers that was in some obscure format that could only be opened on a nokia phone.

I've been searching for a permanent solution for some time now, but the threads containing the same error message never seem to be about the same issue.I want to:I'm not trying anything fancy, all I want to do is open a write-protected file with gedit as root, like so:
Code:
# sudo gedit /usr/bin/deadbeef
..but every time I try, no matter the file, I get this error message:
Code:
(gedit: [process #] ): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display
I already know: I can circumvent this by going:
Code:
# xhost +local:root
# sudo su
# export DISPLAY=:0.0

I have just finished an install of Cent 5.5. I loaded up a trunk for a software application I want to compile on cent, but I cannot read the .cpp files. The issue seems to be with the file extension. If I change the extension to .txt, they open just fine. My .FOR, .FPP, and .DAT files display fine, but the .cpp and .h give me an error, "Couldn't display...". What is the problem here that won't let me open these files in gedit?
