Oct 30, 2009I have two servers to upgrade to 5.4 from 5.3. I have the DVD of 5.4 for both of them. Is there a way I can tell yum to use my DVD instead of the network to do the upgrade?

Feb 18, 2010I am trying to install CentOS 5.2, and the installation ran out of disk space after running for about 2 hours.I checked the FAQ, and it said 1.2 GB. The disk is 3 GB. The default install was selected, and I think that it checks for sufficient available disk space before installing. Still, it ran for quite a while before announcing that it was out of disk space.The Installation Guide is not very helpful, since there is a blank page where the disk space requirement is supposed to be. I just picked the default installation. A search of the forums on "not enough disk space" did not return much.

CentOS 5.3 installation is working fine with drive disk image at USB and CentOS 5.3 at DVD. Our application uses CentOS 5.3 and we build a custom kick-start ISO for installations. Using that ISO client is going to install on all hardware boxes.
Note while installing :
a) No network connection is avalible.
b) No USB isavalible.
c) No floppy is avalible.
d) Only single CD-ROM is avalible.
So, is it possible to build single custom kick-start CentOS 5.3 ISO which contains dirve disk image and entire installation will be done using that image. If so please let me know the steps to build it.

But I want to have redundancy for my OS, them I can install Centos on a Raid-1 using 2 disk, which let me only 4 for the raid 5. I will run a backup I want to have a lot of space.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Hosed Intel DP35DP Centos 5.3 Upgrade?
Jul 10, 2009I have an intel DP35DP motherboard - ICH9 southbridge - set to AHCI mode. Working fine under 5.2. Yesterday I updated to centos 5.3, and got kernel 2.6.18-128.1.16 and now it can't boot. It hangs trying to read sata1 with DRDY errors and exceptions.So then I installed 5.3 from a DVD onto a new drive, and got kernel 2.6.18-128. This worked, most of the time, but occasionally gave me this error. I then updated my BIOS, and the error went away.Then I updated this new working drive to the latest kernel (yum update again) and got kernel 2.6.18-128.1.16, and now it wont boot again, with the same message.

Jan 26, 2011have all ways been hiding in the background read not say a thinglets start well i look after 2 dell poweredge 2650 with 12 gig ram installed servers has been running fine onwell i though it was time to upgrade to 5 all went fine till reboot Memory for crash kernel (0x to 0x) not within permissible range ! well what i have been reading this is the norm for now What is mean by ignore it? LoLwell so i did the system keeps boot till i get to this linesbin/mingetty: /sbin/mingetty: cannot execute binary file alot, and it shows. INIT: Id "5" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes ...so maybe its a memory issue so took 8 gig out left 4 in the system now it reboot alls good with only 4 gig of ram installed so is there a way to fix it to use all the ram can i get the system boot on 4 gig and then add the 8gig later on

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Upgrade Because Disk Is Full
Jan 15, 2010I am trying to upgrade to 9.10 but it fails because the disk is full. I am running a Dell Mini with 16GB SSD...so there isn't a lot of free space to begin with. Added to that, I have some hefty applications (rosegarden, audacity, skype, etc) which I kind of need. Am I better off just sticking to 9.04? Are there any good ways to clean up the system and get rid of stuff that might be sticking around? I did apt-get clean and it didn't clean enough.

May 6, 2010My issue is that while I was upgrading from Hardy to Lucid, everything was going fine until the very end when some packages were badly corrupted (according to the installer) and the upgrade could not complete. When I rebooted, it would not load into the login screen, and instead just presented me with a console. However, 10.04 showed up under GRUB, I loaded 10.04, and it worked fine, so I just changed GRUB to load 10.04 by default. I managed to fix the broken package problem from 10.04.
The problem now is that, since it was a "partial" upgrade and terminated before completion, I still have 8.04 on my hard disk. I can still load 8.04 and still get the same console, instead of the login screen. I just wanted to know how I can "complete" the upgrade and get rid of 8.04. Except for that one issue, upgrade was successful.

Oct 11, 2010which is a surprise as I've found Ubuntu beyond my expectations on all the machines I've run it on.I'm trying to upgrade my old desktop from 9.04 to 9.10 (and then 10.04 - same as my laptop), and am running into this message at the start of the upgrade process:"Not enough free disk spaceThe upgrade is now aborted. The upgrade needs a total of 3109M free space on disk '/'. Please free at least an additional 1088M of disk space on '/'. Empty your trash and remove temporary packages of former installations using 'sudo apt-get clean'."I've done a bit of searching and have followed the leads I've found but am still stuck. I've emptied trash, cleared out old kernels etc but it hasn't got me there.
Running df -h gives this:

General :: Disk Performance Slower After Upgrade To 4GB RAM
Oct 19, 2010I am running openSuse 11.2 (32-bit), my CPU only supports 32-bits. I have a hardware RAID device. My system has 4GB of RAM. When I configure my system to only use 3GB, 2GB, or even 1GB, using mem=1024M in grub, my RAID performance is much better then when letting my system use the default 4GB available.Can anyone explain to me why this is? Is there anything I can do, i.e. kernel configuration, that will help performance when running with all 4GB enabled?

Feb 11, 2010I have several RHEL 5.0 servers in a secure network. We have identified around 200 rpms from 5.4 that we would like to upgrade. These servers have no connection to the internet, and very limited connection to the corporate network.
The application guys will not approve a full 5.4 upgrade as the app is reliant on certain rpms from 5.0.
So how can I create a boot disk that will install just the selected 200 rpm's. I have been trying to modify (remove rpms) from the downloaded 5.4 dvd, but with no luck. I have also had a look at anaconda, but seem to be going round in circles.

I'm testing the upgrade path to centos 5.4 on several virtual machines prior to upgrading our production systems. I have upgraded centos 5.2 --> centos 5.4 and centos 5.3 to centos 5.4. In both cases udev hangs after the upgrade. The following message is displayed on the console: "Starting udev: Wait timeout. Will continue in the background [FAILED]"
I found another related post: "udev hangs on boot for a long time, suspect pam_console_apply"[URL]..So, I booted by VMs using the "udevdebug" option to grub and received the same error message - "udevd-event [###]: run_program: Waiting ## seconds for output of '/sbin/pam_console_apply /dev/..."
In my /etc/ldap.conf file "bind_policy hard" is commented out. I added a line "bind_policy soft" as described in the post and my VMs booted fine. NOTE: This problem is not encountered with a fresh install of CentOS 5.4 and the "bind_policy hard" option in the /etc/ldap.conf is commented out as in the upgraded systems. What is really causing this problem and how do I get it addressed? I have a couple hundred systems to update from various releases of CentOS 5 to the latest current version 5.4. It would be nice to get this bug squashed..

May 2, 2010I am trying to upgrade my ubuntu distribution from 9.10 to 10.04 using update-manager. I have only 2G free in my / partition, and update-manager complains saying it needs 4G free in the / partition to upgrade.
I presume the space is needed to store downloaded packages. Is there any way I can change the download directory to some other partition (i have plenty of space in other partitions)?

May 4, 2010I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 without any visible issues. But after a few days system started to behave strange - first it shows the message that gnome-power-manager is not correctly installed on login screen. The it wasn't able to log in even - so I found that problem might be that it shows not enough space on the root partition.This is really strange for me - I do not have any special data there.

May 5, 2011I've had this problem on a couple of Ubuntu server upgrades and am keen to get to the bottom of it. Basically, with an Ubuntu 10.10 server installtion where LVM has been used, running through the do-release-upgrade process works perfectly until the reboot stage. Then grub complains with "no such disk" and dumps me out to the grub shell. From here, I can see (from ls) the following:

I can enumerate the filesystem on (hd0,1) which seems to contain the /boot filesystem and the filesystem on (hostname-root) seems to contain the / filesystem.

It boots, but into busybox saying that the target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init.

Now, however, I keep getting "disk not ok" at 95% of the disk test. I have downloaded and verified the iso twice, used 2 DVD's, 2 different DVD-drives, 2 different computers and keep getting this error at 95%.
