View 5 RepliesI'm a freelance science editor; I edit dissertations and manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals primarily. My clients almost exclusively use Microsoft Word. Any word processing tool that I use has to be compatible with MS Word, particularly "Track Changes" version control. Has OpenOffice (or another open source word processing software) achieved this?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was checking out wine and installed ms office 2007 in it. But I ended up deciding (for the Windows programs that I needed to use, and the context in which I need them) to just install XP in a VirtualBox machine and use all my Windows programs there (not very many). So, I uninstalled wine and I did all of this that is recommended in the wine faq (to completely remove everything):
rm -rf $HOME/.wine
rm -f $HOME/.config/menus/applications-merged/wine*
rm -rf $HOME/.local/share/applications/wine
rm -f $HOME/.local/share/desktop-directories/wine*
rm -f $HOME/.local/share/icons/????_*.xpm
However, I now have an annoying issue. Microsoft office programs are the default opener of office documents. And since the programs no longer exist, this causes a problem. How can I remove the option to "Open With Microsoft Office ..." so that OpenOffice is the default?
When the custom animations added to my presentation exceeds an amount and i run the preview, my computer freezes. I have never had such problem with microsoft's office. I have open office 3.2 on ubuntu 10.04. my system has 4GB of of ram, core i5 430m cpu with integrated intel graphics. is this phenomenon natural? is it duo to my system limitations or it's an open office bug? what could i do now?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 10.10 and Open Office 3.2.1. I guess that this problem may affect Libre Office too, but I will be happy to be proved wrong about that. I am editing a document that was originally produced in Microsoft Word (the standard .doc format). It is a form produced by a national organisation and it has to be sent back to them, and when submitted it has to be no longer than two A4 pages. It contains a series of headings and (expanding) text boxes for content.
In order to be sure about the length, I did most of the editing with Microsoft Word on my wife's laptop. On that machine, and on a PC that has a different version of Word, the document fits exactly within the two-page limit. But on my laptop, using Open Office, it appears considerably longer, taking up two-and-a-half pages. Why is this, and can anything be done to correct it? Open Office appears to be using the same fonts as Microsoft Word - the font names are the same, anyway - and the font sizes are the same, yet the text appears to take up more of the page display.

I know I could use Inkscape or a 3D program to create word art, but the Word Art function in Microsoft Office is SO much more convenient.

I am using Open office 3.2 with Ubuntu 10.10. Trying to get it set up to print out the Christmas address labels. To register the data source its 'FILE'> 'WIZARDS' then' ADDRESS DATA SOURCE.' But OO doesn't show the 'ADDRESS DATA SOURCE' at the bottom of the list, so I am stuck. Apart from that, I have had no problems with ubuntu and its working well.

View 9 Replies View Relatedhow well does Microsoft Office 2007 work under WINE? My mother is a school teacher for younger children, so she really only needs Microsoft Office 2007 and a browser. For the life of me, I've never met anyone that gets more viruses and problems with her computer. So I'm wondering if I can switch her over to Linux and use Microsoft Office 2007 in WINE. OpenOffice isn't a possibility, I'm already pushing it asking her to learn how to use Linux. (I know it isn't hard, I use it myself, but she will fight to the death about using Microsoft Office) So how's Office in WINE?

View 8 Replies View RelatedMy girlfriend of over a year recently bought a Toshiba laptop. Don't know much about it for I have not seen it myself. 3GB of RAM. Anyway, it's a Windows 7 Home Premium Edition. She has Microsoft Office 2007 pre-installed on it. Now, it's asking for a Product Key, which she does not have. Why? I don't know. I guess they didn't give her a box that has one on it, or something.
So, she sent Microsoft an e-mail and is now awaiting a reply. Anything that I can (LEGALLY) do to help her figure out the Product Key? She said there is one inputed (didn't think that was a word) in the dialog window asking for it, but it says that it's incorrect.
I just want to know. How to run Microsoft office in Linux? Do I need wine? Can you tell me the process- step by step to achieve this?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI just found out about Libre Office. I am currently using Open Office on my Netbook (ubuntu 10.10), and NeoOffice on my Macbook (OS/X 10.6.7).
QUESTION: I have some backups using these formats: .sdw, and .odt. Can Libre Office read documents saved in these (StarOffice / Open Office) formats?
FWIW: I would have preferred to use OO on both machines, but unfortunately OO never fixed a problem with printing envelopes in the Macintosh version. Hence my use of NeoOffice.
I have both installed, but since LO is going to be the way Ubuntu goes for office applications, can I easily have my system setup for native LO? Native being if I double clock on a .doc file it will start up LO's Write program instead of OO.Will just removing OO achieve this or is there an easier way? I looked for file associations and didn't find it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running Debian Squeeze (6.0.1) 64-bit and I'm trying to run Microsoft Office 2007 (due to formatting issues with OpenOffice) through Wine (version 1.0.1 from the repositories). I followed the instructions over here but when I try to run the setup I get an error box with the following message:
Setup did not complete successfully. We are sorry for the inconvenience. An error occurred during the installation, and setup was unable to complete. Please tell Microsoft about this problem. And there are two button: "Send Error Report" and "Don't Send". And the installation is aborted. Is there anyway to make this run?
I installed office 2000 CD using wine, I did this on Ubuntu net-book remix on a NC10 using a networked CD drive. So the installation went okay, I then came to using the software, word opened and promoted me for my product key, which I entered correctly the window disappeared for a second then repaired, I entered the key again but then this caused the whole program to shut down, I have tried repairing it , reinstalling it all apart from uninstalling and reinstalling it. Which I have tried and subsequently failed
Right I got it to work, so for any looking for the solutions simply go to /home/(username)/.wine/system.reg and change the user name and the organisation either delete it or enter something, I entered my user name but I left the organisation blank but I left the quote marks that were there. Save it and the product code thingy should not appear again.
I am fairly new to using Ubuntu 10.10 or any other versions of Ubuntu. I recently downloaded Microsoft Office 2010 and opened it with Wine (read it was the best and easiest to use) after a few seconds I get an error message asking me to install msxml 6.10.1129.0, So I did some further research and found a bunch of links for download but from experience I did not attempt any as I know my PC can get infected. I have seen many tutorials online but all of them require modifying .DLL's in Wine and none of them have worked so far.
Sometime ago I realized my Open Office had changed, I don't remember having done anything in particular but today it isn't the regular open office but what I believe is a KDE version or idk. The theme changed and instead of regular menus I get "window" menus, in the sense that they get effects as regular windows. It's hard to explain it.
