Dec 12, 2010I am using Open office 3.2 with Ubuntu 10.10. Trying to get it set up to print out the Christmas address labels. To register the data source its 'FILE'> 'WIZARDS' then' ADDRESS DATA SOURCE.' But OO doesn't show the 'ADDRESS DATA SOURCE' at the bottom of the list, so I am stuck. Apart from that, I have had no problems with ubuntu and its working well.

Apparently a hacker could send a spreadsheet that if opened could remotely take over your machine. I opened my update manager and there was a sizable Open Office and Java update.
Question: Are Linux/Ubuntu machines susceptible to the security flaws?
Question: Since Adobe Flash is considered proprietary and not updated through the Ubuntu update manager, do I have to manually update that package?

When I use nmap and perform the most comprehensive scan I can think of, it cannot detect any wide open ports (unless bittorent is running) and cannot fingerprint the OS. My last 2 questions about my firewall (I am very happy now) are:
It seems as though Firestarter has been "abandoned" by the developers, and that gufw is more current. Does it really matter which firewall I use because don't they all do the same thing? I like firestarters system tray icon a lot. 2nd question is I have two open|filtered ports. Are these still pretty well protected?
It is very pleasing to see that I have no open ports, because if you were an experienced Windows user like I was, you got used to the fact you were going to have open ports no matter what. Linux's builtin firewall completely destroys the expensive and useless scams they call Norton and McAfee. Linux officially rocks now
Security :: Public Facing OpenVPN - Open Any Ports On The Router / Firewall
Feb 14, 2011Within the documentation of example OpenVPN setups there is a setup that shows an OpenVPN Server with two network interfaces. One interfaces is plugged into the public internet network and the second interface is plugged into the private network.
Normally I assume that it would be best to place the OpenVPN system inside the network behind the router and firewall and open only the ports needed on the router to allow access to the OpenVPN system. All other router ports would be closed. This is the first example they show. To see what I am talking about see page(s) 6-7 here -> [URL]
If one were to use the two interface public facing setup, when would that setup best be justified? I guess if you didn't want to open any ports on the router/firewall then this could be justified but then you have to lock down this public system individually instead of having it protected by the network firewall.

QUESTION: I have some backups using these formats: .sdw, and .odt. Can Libre Office read documents saved in these (StarOffice / Open Office) formats?
FWIW: I would have preferred to use OO on both machines, but unfortunately OO never fixed a problem with printing envelopes in the Macintosh version. Hence my use of NeoOffice.

A machine on the network is advertising it runs, or looks for machines running, Compaq Insight Manager on TCP/2301. If the machine isn't yours or you haven't enabled Compaq's web-based remote management then silently drop it.
Now as far as i know i do not have a network, just a dsl connection. I also do not own a Compaq computer. So if someone who has some knowledge of this could you explain to me how a " network is advertising it runs, or looks for machines running, Compaq Insight Manager on TCP/2301 " . This would seem to me to be a local network thing not a www thing ?

Aug 19, 2010Ok here's my setup :
SuSE 10.0 X86 32 acting as my internet gateway and firewall.
eth0 is my internal interface network 192.168.0.0/24 IP 192.168.0.254 dsl0 is my internet connection and is a single ip PtP connection to my ISP.
My internal network is masquaraded onto the external network.
I run an smtp server on my gateway box that I need to be accessable to both the internal and external networks.
However I want to prevent machines on the internal network from establishing connections to external smtp servers, but still alow them to connect to the smtp server on the gateway to send email.
NOTE I do not want to force attempts to connect to [URL] 25 to be re-directed to my internal server I just want to drop or reject the connection.
The firewall up until now has just been configured through YaST, but am not afraid to edit script files if needed
The reason for doing this it to prevent spambots from being able to send through my isp, I keep my own machines clean but sometimes get asked to disinfect machines for other people (family members etc), where I need to connect to the outside world to get updates/virus defs etc, but don't want them spamming from my network.

Sep 8, 2010I've setup vnc over ssh tunnelling however the Suse firewall seems to be blocking it. On the local host I have this in ~/.ssh/config:LocalForward localhost:5900 remotehost.com:5900 The problem is that this only works when I either disable the firewall or add an exception for VNC. Both of these actions defeat the whole purpose of ssh tunnelling since they leave my VNC port open to the outside world (very insecure).

OpenSUSE Network :: Firewall Is Blocking Printing To Remote Printer?
Jan 10, 2010Printer is connected via USB to server PC running OpenSUSE 11.1 Client PCs are running 11.1, XP, Vista No problem printing from the Windoze machines
Printing is trouble free with the 11.1 client's firewall disabled, but no printer is available with firewall running.
In hopes of diagnosing the problem I figured I'd open everything I could think of until the printer remained available with the firewall running. Then I planned to start removing exceptions one at a time 'til removing one caused the printer to disappear.
