View 1 RepliesI'm wondering if any Open Sourced OS and services/applications installed in an valid business organization, is there anything I should be worrying about in terms of using open source os/applications for business?

View 3 Replies View RelatedAnybody know of any good, easy, open source alternatives to Microsoft WordArt?
I know I could use Inkscape or a 3D program to create word art, but the Word Art function in Microsoft Office is SO much more convenient.

Does anyone know if there is an open source equivalent of a Microsoft Office journal that can be used with Fedora (11)?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm a freelance science editor; I edit dissertations and manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals primarily. My clients almost exclusively use Microsoft Word. Any word processing tool that I use has to be compatible with MS Word, particularly "Track Changes" version control. Has OpenOffice (or another open source word processing software) achieved this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am certainly a Linux Newbie..I have a business with a network of PCs that need not get client files corrupted by viruses & other bad things from the internet...YET I would like to let my employees(who are way worse newbies than me..om Windows even...& stand good chance to mess up computers) use internet at times if they wish. My first thought was just separate side by side PCs, one to get on for Clients/business network etc, & the other to get trashed by the internet.
What I am thinking is a better alternative (& I need to know from yall who I'm sure are way beyond this newbie whether this thinking is correct) is to put something like Puppy Linux 5.0 on small memory USB flash drives & let them each have one to use for internet, simple application functions etc. Can I safely believe that running internet browsing on the flash drive with Puppy Linux booted & running as the OS is NOT going to potentially infect my windows XP business PCs with viruses etc?
I made the error of installing FGLRX on lucid. After the install, Plymouth resolution sucks and my laptop will not come out of suspend/hibernate. When I use jockey-gtk to disable FGLRX, it will not allow me to use compiz for 3d graphics. However, out of the box, I was able to run compiz no problem. How can I revert lucid back to factory form, where it was able to perform 3d acceleration without the use of FGLRX?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI tried everything under the internet-sun that purports to allow my 128 mb usb pen to work like a writable floppy. The last I tried is:
mount -o umask=0 /dev/sdc1 /home/myhome/usbpen. It works, but only a switch to root can write and root usurp my directory. just format back to dos/fat16, will work. But a repartition of my pen don't get changed after a reboot. How am I supposed to go back to 'good-old-microsoft' format.
Since Ubuntu and other Linux Distros are free to download and distribute. Would it be illegal for me to have a Small Business of my own that would charge individuals/small-businesses to Install and Setup Linux desktops. I wasn't sure how that GPL license worked. I figured I would be charging individuals for setting up Linux Desktops on their machines or small business/offices and training/teaching them on the various applications they could install on their own.
Also, would it be illegal to create websites using Apache, Tomcat and other Open Source tools and then sell those sites. I figured many people are turned off by learning or installing something other than Windows desktops on their pcs, just because it is different. If this cannot be done under the GPL license, then could someone tell me how I could go about starting my own small business to legally Setup/Install Linux distributions.
Is there any open source virtual machine so i can study the source in order to create my own? i'm gonna write my own, so it doesNT matter if license does not allow further development of the code.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWe all know we can install a linux system such as Fedora 10 and use it. Being linux, one should in principle get the source codes for everything that has been precompiled (except the proprietary drivers such as nvidia) in the installation DVDs/CDs. Where are the source codes ? Is there a place I can download them ?
To avoid confusion, I am not referring to the kernel source that can be compiled to give a linux kernel, but that does not include the drivers, such as intel_drv.so.
To be more specific, the intel graphic i810 driver has been built into any linux system, but where is the exact source? One answer may be that primary source intellinuxgraphics.com. However, if anyone tries to download the every changing (i.e., keep updated almost every single day) driver source codes from freedesktop.org, it is almost certain that the source codes will not be the same as the one that is finalized in Fedora 10.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was checking out wine and installed ms office 2007 in it. But I ended up deciding (for the Windows programs that I needed to use, and the context in which I need them) to just install XP in a VirtualBox machine and use all my Windows programs there (not very many). So, I uninstalled wine and I did all of this that is recommended in the wine faq (to completely remove everything):
rm -rf $HOME/.wine
rm -f $HOME/.config/menus/applications-merged/wine*
rm -rf $HOME/.local/share/applications/wine
rm -f $HOME/.local/share/desktop-directories/wine*
rm -f $HOME/.local/share/icons/????_*.xpm
However, I now have an annoying issue. Microsoft office programs are the default opener of office documents. And since the programs no longer exist, this causes a problem. How can I remove the option to "Open With Microsoft Office ..." so that OpenOffice is the default?
What is a good example of an Open Source IRC client for Windows or Linux? If not, something free and extensible will do.The reason I would like this to be open source is that I wouldn't mind being able to understand how the message formatting is implemented in such a project.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have the following setup code...
I would like to activate 802.1x authentication on the Windows PCs, and have the Linux Box play the role of a 802.1x authenticator (blocking all access to the Internet until the Windows PCs have properly authenticated themselves using the 802.1x protocol, and the Linux Box checks the credentials by interrogating the RADIUS server).
I could theoretically insert a 802.1x-capable switch between the Windows PCs and the Linux Box, but this setup is embedded and the hardware cannot be changed.
Apparently the OpenWRT project solved the problem somehow, so there must be an open-source solution somewhere, but I simply cannot find it. The only links I find are for the Open1X project (http://open1x.sourceforge.net/), but the Docs link is dead.
I'm faced with standing up an open source NMS and am deep into Zenoss Core. I'm evaluating distributed collectors that will be deployed behind a customer NAT/Firewall. Cool, this works. What if the customer IP space overlaps with an existing customer IP space? From a management perspective Zenoss distinguishes devices by IP. So it will refuse to add duplicate addresses. To get multi-realm IP functionality, It would require purchasing a subscription to enterprise license.
So my pickle, do I spend weeks or months hacking the Zenoss sub structure to duplicate that? Do I somehow remap the IPs through site to site VPN at the router? Or do I look for a different open source solution?Does anyone know of an open source NMS solution that addresses overlapping IP space and can do distributed collectors? I have posted a question on Zabbix forums asking if the distributed monitoring they have will do this. But I hope that someone else has tackled this and succeeded.
I am looking for TCP/IP server software to deliver internet, VoIP, and IPTV service over that supports IPv6 and is open source. ?
