Ubuntu Security :: Are Microsoft Office Exploits Any Risk To Libreoffice?
Jun 3, 2011
I have some questions about security
1> are the flash exploits are of any use to a Linux operating system like Ubuntu etc. ?
2>are the Microsoft office exploits any risk to libreoffice or open-office software suites?
3>are there exploits for Linux , open-office and libreoffice ?

During a recent install I made the leap to encryption, but /boot must remain unencrypted. Is there really any legitimate security risk to having an unencrypted /boot partition? I mean basically someone can just see what kernel you're running which they could see during boot anyways right? Oh I and keep all my financial documents in /boot/finances/ (haha ok not really, but I am serious about the first part).

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop. I have an Apache web server running that I can access at 192.168.1.102 ("It works! This is the default web page for this server. ...").
Are there any security risks in leaving this running? Is the web server available to anyone outside my network?

I have received an email with a .csv attachment from a bank, and need to know how to view the attachment without risk. Using View>Message Source I see a large solid block of random upper and lower case characters, whereas I would expect to see some readable text mixed in. The email subject and the attachment name both contain data specific to me, but the text of the email consists largely of disclaimers with no mention of my name or any clue as to the nature of the attachment. I am using Thunderbird as my email client.

i want to know the risk with auto mounting flash drive as a root user,if for example there is a Usb Flash drive inserted into the system and we login into root unknowingly, and this flash drive contains an autorun script which calls a new script that can place viruses in your system, since you are in the root it will not even prompt for password and if the script is fast enough you will not even see it executing.

A few days ago I installed F12 and it was working fine very well up until today when I booted my computer from a perfect working order state yesterday to this. Well my wireless was still being sniffed and slowed down to dial up speed but what's new thats been consistant for at least 3 months I can't really do much about it since my brother doesn't like changing the password.
I recently logged onto my new fedora 12, 64-bit, system encrypted (all partitions effected by install), selinux enforced install to find myself in tty4 and some "other" users logged on to the other terminals. My folders would have lock icons on them after opening, my notication menu/toolbar crashed and hasn't returned on system reboot, some data transfers between removable storage returned input output errors while others worked fine(?). I also recieved this kernel bug output from the bug reporting tool but I have no idea what it means.
Also I was not loose with the security either I had removed unconfined login types (After setting up the system as I needed) meaning I couldn't even run root or sudo and neither could anyone else (asfar as I was aware). I pretty much increased selinux to its maximum boolean strictness and limited the _default_(Me included) account to a user from a _default_ unconfined (to actually be able to log in with the selinux boolean in place). Meaning they "the exploiters" were able to bypass selinux as a user account? How is that possible and even if you do root logon is disabled by selinux too?
At the moment I'm on a live cd trying to look for a way to custimise them as it seems it may be my only option.
Just a side note you can't just log in to tty4 by default without actively taking up spaces either by other users or your own use. Meaning since the tty login is automated 3 terminals were in use tty1, tty2 and tty3.
Which commands should I run to find out what is being done?
Edit: Just had my F12 x64 live cd taken down twice and had to hard reset as the toolbar disappeared. Took a photo of the last error message. I was just reading a pdf and using firefox at the time.
Is fedora usually this easy to hack?

I need to build a new computer, and I'm considering buying an "AMD-oriented" motherboard, that comes with an integrated ATI Radeon GPU.But, being a big Free Software enthusiast, that likes to have completely free drivers for everything, and knowing that the "open source" Radeon driver, for ATI/AMD GPUs, uses a non-free firmware, I'm reluctant about this... Above all, because I don't know what kind of security risk I'm taking, when using a proprietary firmware.
And, having read what was recently reported about the security of proprietary firmwares, in general,URL... if the firmware component of graphics cards drivers poses any security threat?(I mean, can the firmware part of a graphics cards driver be used to do anything more than executing instructions to display graphics?)

I refrained from posting this in the Kernel Vulns thread earlier, due to its zero-day status. But now that the issue has been Slashdotted, there's no use in keeping us from publicly discussing this vulnerability. The link to the article (from which I quote below) is here. Brad Spengler's original announcement on the Dailydave mailing list is here.Quote:A researcher has published exploit code for a new vulnerability he discovered in the Linux kernel. The vulnerability is an especially interesting one in that the researcher who discovered it, Brad Spengler, has demonstrated that he can use the weakness to defeat many of the add-on security protections offered by SELinux and AppArmor.

I have installed LibreOffice (x86) on Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat, and it's working great!
I'm just curious if anyone knows a quick way to make LibreOffice the default for all of the appropriate files (doc, odt, xls, ods, etc.)
I searched around in the the LibreOffice>Tools>Options, but I haven't found anything yet. I'm aware that I could right click on a ods file and use the "Open With Other Application" to set a default for that one filetype, but I figured that there's probably a way to completely switch all office file types to Libreoffice.

I have a very quick question (and I can't believe I can't figure this one out myself: sorry). I installed 11.04 this weekend. Now, when I download, say, a word doc using FireFox, LibreOffice doesn't by default open the file (instead, Wine tries to open it; but, alas, fails). Now, when I try to open with another application, when prompted by the Firefox download window, I have no idea how to allocate LibreOffice as the programme to open the download. I can navigate to the .libreoffice folder, for example, but then I'm presented with many other folders, with many files, etc, and I have no idea how to set LibreOffice to open the file.
I know I can save file to hard-drive, then open manually. However, I would like to be able to simply open the file directly with LibreOffice.

how well does Microsoft Office 2007 work under WINE? My mother is a school teacher for younger children, so she really only needs Microsoft Office 2007 and a browser. For the life of me, I've never met anyone that gets more viruses and problems with her computer. So I'm wondering if I can switch her over to Linux and use Microsoft Office 2007 in WINE. OpenOffice isn't a possibility, I'm already pushing it asking her to learn how to use Linux. (I know it isn't hard, I use it myself, but she will fight to the death about using Microsoft Office) So how's Office in WINE?

I was checking out wine and installed ms office 2007 in it. But I ended up deciding (for the Windows programs that I needed to use, and the context in which I need them) to just install XP in a VirtualBox machine and use all my Windows programs there (not very many). So, I uninstalled wine and I did all of this that is recommended in the wine faq (to completely remove everything):
rm -rf $HOME/.wine
rm -f $HOME/.config/menus/applications-merged/wine*
rm -rf $HOME/.local/share/applications/wine
rm -f $HOME/.local/share/desktop-directories/wine*
rm -f $HOME/.local/share/icons/????_*.xpm
However, I now have an annoying issue. Microsoft office programs are the default opener of office documents. And since the programs no longer exist, this causes a problem. How can I remove the option to "Open With Microsoft Office ..." so that OpenOffice is the default?

My girlfriend of over a year recently bought a Toshiba laptop. Don't know much about it for I have not seen it myself. 3GB of RAM. Anyway, it's a Windows 7 Home Premium Edition. She has Microsoft Office 2007 pre-installed on it. Now, it's asking for a Product Key, which she does not have. Why? I don't know. I guess they didn't give her a box that has one on it, or something.
So, she sent Microsoft an e-mail and is now awaiting a reply. Anything that I can (LEGALLY) do to help her figure out the Product Key? She said there is one inputed (didn't think that was a word) in the dialog window asking for it, but it says that it's incorrect.

Recently I had a Java exploit on Windows. Luckily Microsoft Security Essentials identified and removed it. Such things can happen on Linux as well, from what I've heard. Why does Linux offer no such detection?

I installed office 2000 CD using wine, I did this on Ubuntu net-book remix on a NC10 using a networked CD drive. So the installation went okay, I then came to using the software, word opened and promoted me for my product key, which I entered correctly the window disappeared for a second then repaired, I entered the key again but then this caused the whole program to shut down, I have tried repairing it , reinstalling it all apart from uninstalling and reinstalling it. Which I have tried and subsequently failed
Right I got it to work, so for any looking for the solutions simply go to /home/(username)/.wine/system.reg and change the user name and the organisation either delete it or enter something, I entered my user name but I left the organisation blank but I left the quote marks that were there. Save it and the product code thingy should not appear again.
