Software :: Microtik X Slackware - "bandwidth Control - Allows Shares To Clients Or Not"

Jun 16, 2010

I would do in my wireless provider, "bandwidth control, allows shares to clients or not." I have an excellent tutorial for using Slack with the server, but is missing from clarify the two issues with quotes and if I can use the Slack not the Mikrotik?

Slackware :: Control Network Bandwidth Used By Applications?

I'm looking for a tool to control network bandwidth (per application i.e. totem), something like trickle (a userspace bandwidth shaper).Trickle is a bit outdated, latest ver. 1.0.6 (2003), and it won't compile under -current. There's a slackbuild available, dated 2004.

Server :: Does Squid Automatically Split Bandwidth Between Connected Clients

Oct 1, 2009

Does squid automatically split bandwidth between connected clients? I'm wondering if someone was downloading a lot of data and someone else connected whether it would split the access 50:50 between them? I have 1 user that is using a lot of bandwidth but the server doesn't seem to split it up between all connected clients so others are receiving slow access. I don't have this client's IP address but I do have ncsa auth connected. Will delay_pools work with an ncsa username?

Server :: How To Inform Clients About Startup To Mount NFS Shares

May 2, 2010

My home network consists of a file server with a RAID5 array of disks and various 'client' computers. Various parts of this RAID array are shared using NFS. The NFS server and clients all work fine for all shares. This computer consumes a lot of power so is only on when needed and the problem I'm struggling with is how to inform the clients that are running when the server starts so they can mount the NFS shares they're interested in? At the moment that the server runs a series of scripts on each client using a command like 'ssh someuser@client -X /home/someuser/bin/mountscript.sh'. This only works if someuser can ssh to client from server without a password (or permission is stored in .ssh/known_hosts), requires a fair bit of work when I add a new client, and is prone to break when I fiddle with things. Is there a more elegant system, maybe one that would allow the file server to broadcast a 'I'm here' message to all clients, or the entire network, on startup, and similarly an 'I'm going away' message when it shuts down again?

Slackware :: Thinkpad T500 Fan Control - Way To Control ?

Jun 2, 2010

I have had my thinkpad for just a few short months and, it must be that we are heading into summer, but I am starting to finally run into some overheating issues especially when compiling software for awhile, i.e. kernel.

My question would be, "Is it best to let the built in thermal management take care of the issue, and I just need to know what to tweak, or to put on a script solution such as the tp-fancontrol script?

The computer takes about 5-10 minutes to overheat and the message I get in /var/log/messages is "logger: ACPI group thermal_zone / action THM1 is not defined" then it shuts down.

So, any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.

I am running slackware-current x86_64 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T500.

Slackware :: Monitor And Log Internet Bandwidth Usage

Jan 2, 2010

I'm looking for a simple way to monitor and log my internet bandwidth usage. Not total network device usage, just internet usage.Something that provides a simple chart of daily, monthly, and yearly usage, but ignoring all bandwidth on my internal LAN.I notice several possible tools, such as vnstat, ntop, iftop. Yet all of them seem focused on tracking the entire network interface. I want to ignore LAN usage. I do not really care about LAN bandwidth.iftop seems intended only for on-the-fly usage and not cumulative logging. I can't tell whether vnstat or ntop can be configured to log only internet usage rather than all traffic through the network device.

I do not want to log every connection like squid. The utility should only log stats on a daily basis, but also be able to display cumulative totals from those daily entries.I don't need DNS resolution, port monitoring, etc.I prefer something that runs in the background as a service or daemon, but can provide statistics quickly with a terminal window. All I want is to view total daily, monthly, and yearly internet usage. Perhaps even pipe the output to a local email each day too.

Slackware :: Broadcast Messages From Server To Clients

Jul 6, 2010

I am searching for a way to broadcast a simple message from a server to the other machines (clients) on my local network every day at 22:30 (10:30pm) to warn users that the server will shutdown in 30 minutes (energy saving strategy). Basically, I was thinking to add a cron entry ion the server crontab to do so. before I go ahead with that, I tried several ways to accomplish this action. Then I tried simply "wall" and got a text promt to type in my message. At the end I pressed CTRL+D and got a popup displaying my message. So it worked but it was on the server's monitor. How can I send this message to a remote machine? Is wall the proper command to do so?

I also tried using paswordless ssh..It doesnt work. Basically I can login on the remote machine using passwordless ssh but when I issue either kdialog or xmessage, I get error "cannot connect to X server on diaplay 0:0" (or something similar).I tried also ssh 'wall 'message'' but it also says "cannot connect to X server on diaplay 0:0"So far I have several ways but nothing really works..There must be a real way to to that? All machines are Slackware 13.1 based.

(Sound still plays though, it seems that volume is at 100% while the bar in the middle reads 0%).

Slackware :: Chassis Fan At Max - No Speed Control?

Oct 4, 2010

I got a new computer and got it running Slackware64-current. It's motherboard is an ASUS M4A88TD-M and it's processor is an AMD Phenom II x4 965. I decided to get some chassis fans to improve it's thermal performance. But, since I started the computer after installing the new fan (only one of the 3 I got) the fan's speed is at max and it's very noisy. I'd like Slackware to control it's speed according to temperatures from lm-sensors. Output of # sensors-detect can be found here. Kernel is stock -current 2.6.33.4. Output of # lspci is here.

Code:
gtl@coruscant:~$ sensors

+12 Voltage: +12.03 V (min = +10.20 V, max = +13.80 V)
CPU FAN Speed: 2170 RPM (min = 600 RPM)

Slackware :: Mp3blaster Volume Control ?

May 3, 2011

I am using Slackware 13.0 quite out of the box, normally I can change volume for every app using alsamixer. As my laptop is a little bit old working in X uses a lot of resources I have been searching for more and more console based apps. With good results until now.

I started using mp3blaster to listen to music. Great app and all. Only problem I have got is that I have difficulty controlling the volume for it. When in alsamixer I can mute the master channel an control Pcm in small increments so that I can speak about control. When using mp3blaster I have got no control whatsoever. Cant mute the vol channel nor can I control the Pcm2 channel in any way.

My questions are: How do I control the volume in mp3blaster? Why do I have Pcm2 instead of Pcm in mp3blaster? What other info would be needed for anyone to push me in the right direction to solve this problem?

Slackware :: Cannot Control Brightness Settings On Vaio - 13.37

May 11, 2011

I just finished installing Slackware64 13.37 on my Sony Vaio PCG-7153L, and I'm having issues controlling the LCD brightness of the laptop. It still has the stock Slack kernel 2.6.37.6 SMP The brightness controls worked on Fedora 12-14, as well as the Ubuntu 10.04 live disc. I checked /proc/acpi/, but there's nothing in there to control brightness. I reloaded the sony_laptop kernel module, and from dmesg I get:

Code:

sony-laptop: brightness ignored, must be controlled by ACPI video driver From the Ubuntu bug [URL] and the Red Hat bug [URL] it looks like they've already dealt with this problem. However, as I said earlier, my laptop worked fine with Fedora 12-14.I know Slackware does minimal fiddling with the kernel, so I'm thinking this might be an upstream kernel bug...
