I have gotten several different outputs after attempting to boot up this live cd. I verified the image and the md5 (both are good).

New to Linux,after burned live cd,was left in the drive,then fund out the disk,from the drive next morning,and the computer(inspiron dell,windows vista)came with blue screen,after reboot the computer i have the black screen with this.ot boot device available after run knoppix live cd..."then i did F8 and when to windows system boot options, no one worked sofar,even r repair,then i did put the burned linux disk"knoppix live cd is mounted but was in germany,spanish and english are my options,do not what to do it next,how can i recover the windows system?i'm downloading another live cd in english,but no sure if the previous disk version,that i don't know wich it's? is going to be a problem with the new disk,the original intention with the disk,was to repair a dell xps 2010 with the windows32 system corrupted,some said that's possible with linux.

All the hard drives are hooked to the High Point controller. It recognizes all of them that have power hooked up and read/writes to them. Two have 98SE installs, the third is where I'm trying to install Fedora 12 to get away from some problems I'm having with 98SE.
The BIOS is set up to boot from the "SCSI device" which means it's booting from the High Point controller. The High Point lets me set a boot mark, which, when set to the Fedora drive, yields the disk boot failure no matter what I do to it.
I have successfully used a Knoppix Live Boot CD to read the disks of a Windows Computer running XPI need to move some registry files around to make it boot into XP again, but I get a denied access error when pasting files into a directory
View 8 Replies View RelatedIm trying to recover some data from my friends laptop, since it wont boot from the harddisk anymore. From the knoppix cd i can find harddrive but when i try to access it im asked for a password. However dont know the password I have tried the password from his windows login but that doesnt work. Is there another way to access the drive so i dont have to use a password? If possible i would like to avoid removing the harddrive from the laptop. The installed OS is win7.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Fedora 10 onto a box which had XP and Knoppix dual-booting. XP is on 1 HDD and Knoppix and Fedora share a second HDD. I installed from Fedora Live CD and accepted the Fedora MBR when it came to that option. I edited the Fedora MBR to show Knoppix residing on /dev/sdb1 (with Fedora on sdb2). XP boots without a problem, however, when I try to boot into Knoppix, I get the message "invalid or unsupported executable format".Following advice in other strings, here is my grub.conf file entry:

Finding another post on MBR problems, I've tried, also without success, amending the grub.conf file as follows:

I've just tried to install Squeeze on my guest partition, using a magazine disk that offered a live CD version with installer, which I ran in text-based expert mode. The process was not a success.
1. The routine for installing grub claimed (hd0,2) was the same as /dev/hda2
2. Starting Debian's grub from the Fedora bootloader with chainloader failed
3. A conventional start revealed all sorts of problems, ending with "/bin/sh can't access tty"
I can't believe Debian could produce something like that! Has anyone here used their live CD as an installer? Tell me this mess is down to Linux Format magazine!
Just got back to attempting to play with 10.04 using its Live CD. It consistently goes to the "Log In" page and not the Live CD page on running. I saw a Post specifying a F key to be pressed on boot-up to get to the desired starting point some time ago, but did not write it down. Some advice did say press Any Key but this does not seem to do the job. Tried to use the search function here but no joy. Can anyone remember which F key? Note that as a check, I tried to use 9.10 Live CD and this worked fine, so it is not a machine problem.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a C2D (E6600) with 2Gb of DDR800 and an Nvidia 8800GT. I had this setup running one of the Hardy flavors a while back, but it had since been wiped. I'm now trying to install 10.10 x64 on it. When using the LiveCD, I get to the purple screen (desktop background). It just hangs there.
It's not hanging during the boot process where you'd see something the splash is hiding, it's where it turns over to gnome. So if I turn all that off, I get it to show up on the purple screen, but every five seconds or so, it flashes like it's reconfiguring the display (crazy colors, black screen, lines, then back to purple), then it pulses goes brighter, then back to normal and then sits. I dropped into a command prompt and looked at /var/log/messages (dmesg doesn't have anything useful) and it tells me that nautilus has a general protection error in libdbus, gnome has a general protection error in libgobject, and then apport has a general protection error in python2, then apport apparently generates a core, then aborts the core.....
Tried to install 10.4 Beta2 on my testing machine. Boots but then splash screen starts scrolling really fast though I can notice that 5 dots are moving so no hanging. It takes quite a while and then black screen appears (also scrolling) and I cannot read what's there; last line looks like a prompt. Alt-Ctrl-Del reboots the machine. So I cannot even enter Live mode.
This machine is about 7-8 y.o. P4 2.4GHz (i686) on Asus P4S333/c, 2.5GB ram, GeForce3-Ti200, latest bios 2003 but runs any Linux (I tried) and FreeBSD 9-CURRENT perfectly (Even win7 is installable...but runs badly). On newer machine same CD works fine. The machine is AthlonX2 2.3GHz on Asus M3N78-vm, 4GB ram, onboard chip GeForce8200, HDDs, DVD-RW - all SATA (AHCI). What could be wrong with my old machine? Does Ubuntu still support 96xx Nvidia driver?
Keyboard and mouse failure when trying to run a live Ubuntu disk on an Acer Aspire M1641 desktop. I was trying to show off the Ubuntu system to a colleague when to my surprise as it booted up both keyboard and mouse died. There was no response at all, the only option was to use the power button, rebooting into Vista all back to normal. I tried several other versions of Ubuntu going back 8.04 even Knoppix failed to get the keyboard and mouse working. Even after re installing the windows drivers and several more attempts even changing keyboard and mouse, I could not get any linux live disk to work.

View 1 Replies View RelatedHave been running ubuntu for sometime now and love its functionality...However since a recent update have the following issues..When I power on the laptop I get the toshiba logo followed by grub loading with the message ' invalid enviroment block" "unable to load default boot entries". When I then try to run the laptop off a LiveCd, the ubuntu splash screen appears with the loading process bar (horizontal line) displayed..however it then appears to display a black screen with no further activity..Now all of this is via an external monitor as my laptop screen shows no activity right from the very start with just a blank screen....so am really stuck here wondering if its a harware/software issue or a combination of both...
View 1 Replies View RelatedRunning VirtualBox 3.2.6 under some host OS (should be irrelevant which one, right?), I created a machine, intending to install Fedora 13 on it. Got the Fedora 13 Live CD iso image, and an 8.6 GB virtual hard drive, completely blank. I set the machine to boot off the Live CD image. The Live CD boots nicely and I get to its desktop. I open "Install to Hard Drive"...and nothing happens. No error message, zip, nada. Inspection of the system shows a series of odd file systems, but I have no clue what they are for and whether they're usable or not.
The sticky [URL] mentions that the blank virtual hard disk should be partitioned and formatted beforehand...So I did, using the Live CD's Disk Utility (Applications: System Tools: Disk Utility). Although the sticky states the small /boot partition should be ext2 or ext3, the Live CD installer proposes to reformat it as ext4. Shouldn't we have formatted it as ext4 right away, then? Also, the installer set the /boot partition's size to 524 MB, not 200 MB as recommended by the sticky.
OBSERVATION: This was not easy because VirtualBox sets the display to 800x600 at most, and the Disk Utility spills beyond those confines WITHOUT PROVIDING SLIDERS. It was sheer luck that the required buttons (create partition, format partition) were barely reachable (at the bottom edge of the screen). This is a serious problem, because increasing the VirtualBox display size can only be done *after* installation (see for instance[URL] - since this guest addition requires rebooting the guest OS, it probably won't stick to the Live CD).
Once those two partitions are prepared and the virtual machine rebooted, "Install to Hard Drive" works as expected.
OBSERVATION: It is absolutely inexcusable that the Live CD installer (Anaconda?) does not propose to do this partitioning and formatting for the user. It is even more inexcusable that it should fail without giving any feedback whatsoever to the user.
Aside: VirtualBox's guest additions does not work correctly (for 3.2.6 anyway). The Devices: Install Guest Additions menu merely mounts a CD image VBOXADDITIONS_3.2.6_63112) without any feedback (expected feedback because the menu ends with an ellipsis). The CD, once opened, has an Open Autorun Prompt button...which fails to do anything. Manually running autorun.sh also fails. I had to manually invoke VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run from a terminal to get anywhere. Even then I was unable to go higher than 1024x768.

Resently I installed OpenSUSE 11.1 including XEN as I planned to use virtual machines. XEN item appeared in GRUB boot menu along with other items (OpenSUSE, windows...).I was instructed to boot XEN in order to use virtual machines.During boot, XEN was examining my disks and partitions, and when it reached CD and DVD drives, seemingly it went into infinite loop between the two drives. Finaly the screen went dark, and I have to make hard reboot. How can I work around this problem?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've had problems getting Windows to boot ever since I reinstalled it and then reinstalled the grub boot loader. Normally one would think that I would get a Error * message or something along that line but it starts with a quick flash of some text that says "Starting.." and other stuff I can't read before it disappears. Then it goes to my computers built in diagnostic tool, which obviously won't help since it isn't a real hardware problem either.I ran fdisk and here are some odd things that came up.Quote:

I have a hp g72-b620us laptop.There were three partitions a "HP Tools" a "restore" and "windows" I resized the windows partition in windows 7 with EASEUS Partition Master. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on the new partition.Ubuntu boots fine but no windows. When I select Windows 7 it crashes after the animated logo.

Had Ubuntu 10.10 running fine on a Dell box, shut down as normal earlier in the week but now won't boot from GRUB (ends up with Busybox screen and initramfs(?) prompt). PC is a dual boot system which still boots OK into the XP partition on the same hard disk. I've tried all the other Unbuntu boot options in the GRUB menu (older kernels and the 'recovery' / non-recovery options) but all produce the same failure to boot into Ubuntu. I've searched the forums and tried various things but nothing has worked so far.
I tried the fix of booting from an Ubuntu 10.10 live CD, creating a mount point and mounting the relevant linux partition before using #apt-get update and #apt-get upgrade options to repair the installation. This seemed like a logical simple solution BUT the partition will not mount!! Further investigation using the Disk Utility app in the Ubuntu drop down menu indicated an error message along the lines of 'cannot mount Daemon inhibited' which I can't seem to find much information about fixing.
Using Gparted it looks like all the partitions originally set up on the disk are still there.
I put a lot of time into getting the system set up (scanners, printers, webcams and software) and would be really annoyed to have to do it all again if at all possible ...
I have a box running Lenny and boot with lilo. Today there was a power failure and now the system is stuck on Lilo ..It doesnt get passed that. I tried to boot in single mode but the same thing is happens. How can I fix this problem

i do software (learn keyboard) for blind people. I selected ubuntu and festival and TTS. Please i NEED (mandatory for disabled people) live cd what can be inserted into cdrom and everything is done - automatic boot, settings done, software is on start-up... created own distribution, programed software, done settings, but what kills me is : How i can run AUTOMATIC (without asking, no enter) boot from CD-ROOM. Lately I'm encountering a somewhat annoying malfunction: almost every boot, my desktop is stuck, HD red led is constatnly on, and i get a message from kerneloops that I had a kernel failure. I can move the cursor a little and slowly or not at all. Few violent reboots and I get a clean boot. Running Debian Lenny kernel 2.6.26-2-686 on a Pentium 4 2.0 GHz with 250 MiB ram.
View 4 Replies View Relatedi've enabled quotas for a user on my fedora 10 distro but whenever i reboot the machine the boot.log contains the following message :"Enabling local filesystem after every startup i have to login as root and issue the quotaon -auv command to reenable quotas.what causes this failure on startup ? is there a workaround to solve this problem ?there is plenty of free space on the root partition that quotas are enabled.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI had occasion to add a few lines to rc.sysinit. Turns out the lines syntax was wrong. Instead of the booting ignoring those lines and proceeding on, then giving me an error warning or perhaps dumping into the interactive mode it just hung up! After several tries at moving on I discovered ESC dropped me into some sort of unannounced shell I got the installation disk out and with the repair system option using VI I got the lines deleted and all went back to normal. Now my suggestion is that if something does not make sense in terms of syntax while booting then cover it by doing the above and ignoring it with a warning later.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI was having problems performing an update yesterday that failed on dovecot dependancies and after a few tries I removed dovecote (it wasn't being used) from the installation and tried again. Everything seemed to be going OK then the update (about 160MB) hung and the screen went black a few times and I think then shutdown automatically. The PC then fails to reboot and displayes the message "Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)" I have tried to get the PC to boot with the super grub disc but without success (probably my in experience) I have also tried a suggestion from one of the forums to start the PC with a live CD and typed su -c 'grub-install /dev/sda at the terminal again without sucess. I have looked at the files with the live CD there are grub, menu and kernel files there (some are in lost + found, b ut don't know wheer these should be so have not changed anything.
Is there an easy way for the in-experienced to repair the boot process ?
The PC is a pentium 4 running Fedora 13
There is a 200MB boot partition formated as Ext3
and a 19GB partition formated as a LVM with Ext4
There is a CD drive but no DVD
Everything has worked OK for the past year through two online upgrades.
