Software :: Keyboard In Slackware-13.0 - Getting Double Letters All Over The Place - Cursor Blink Has Slowed Too Near Zero
Jun 1, 2010
I have XFCE and xorg-server-1.7.7 in slackware64-13.0. I have my keyboard set up in xorg.conf. X ignores that and takes info from hal. So I have a US keyboard, when I have a UK/IE keyboard actually. When I added openoffice, i found I was getting double letters am getting double letters all over the place, and the cursor blink has slowed too near zero. So when I want to remove them again, the mouse will not land the cursor in the middle of a word to delete the extras. An average of 3 double letters are happening each line. Mouse sometimes works to remove them, usually not. I have set 'repeat delay' at maximum, 'repeat speed' & 'blink delay' at minimum. No effect. Disabled key repeat - still happens.

I have windows 7 + Ubuntu 10.04 in dual boot, I noticed that sometimes the ubuntu was not booting.
Right after I select the os in grub (ubuntu) the screen goes black with the blink cursor and nothing happens, that's all no messages it's stuck there forever.
Today, it does this every time I try to enter Ubuntu, it's just stuck there.

Just a minor frustration, I have not found how to do this, double clicking serves what purpose? Am I going to change my mind between clicks?

For the last several days my laptop has been "lagging". When typing (such as now) the cursor will disappear and no letters will appear for a second or I get doubling letters. Example: the word "laptop" will come out as "laaptoppp". When I hover the cursor over a link it will sometimes not highlight it right away. When I scroll up or down in Fire Fox or in my folders the screen will move a little, freeze, and then shoot down (or up) very quickly. Often Ctrl-c simply won't work. Plus several other things that all add up to being very frustrating.
I have the system monitor applet on a panel and I've noticed my CPU spiking periodically to 100%. When it happens it's rythmic, like this: A....A....A....A....A.... and then stops after a while. I've watched the processes and I'm fairly sure it's xorg doing it. My wife complained to me about her desktop doing similar things about a day before I saw that my laptop is doing this. I am fairly computer literate (no expert but no novice either) and I am totally stumped. Back in my Windows days (long, long ago in a...etc. etc.) I'd have said virus but here? Not so sure.

When I start a reply or a reply to all email, the template that is used keeps on putting the cursor after the signature, when I want it to put it at the beginning of the email. I am using the default template.I have done a google search on this and it is supposedly fixed, although I could not find out in which version.I am running KDE 4.3.5, KMail v1.12.4.

since today's update my keyboard is acting strange. Letters e a c b f d won't come out right. They show for example e. and then I can't type anything more except the same letter over and over, until the eeeeee transforms into some weird symbol, sometimes asking me to choose between several ones...already checked languages and keyboard settings, nothing will do...

Yesterday, after browsing for a while, my keyboard suddenly started to show different characters than typed. The keys are just typing different letters than pressed. For example, the j displays a 1, the k displays a 2, and so on. This only happens on the x server. On the terminal, before starting the x server, the keyboard works just fine.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10.

I've been using using Ubuntu and Arch with gnome for ages, but after the whole gnome3 and unity hubub, I decided to go with kde and openSUSE. and I'm completely loving it. However, I have one problem Ubuntu (gnome) has the option to choose the Faroese keyboard layout, but in openSUSE with kde, it's not an option. Now I really need to be able to write a lot, so I need the regular Faroese layout, otherwise I'm missing the letter "ð". openSUSE should really implement Faroese into the keyboard layout options

I recently built my first computer which has Debian Jessie running on it.
Everything was running great until I updated the computer a few days ago. After doing that and turning it on a few hours later, the keyboard started missing letters (as in it wouldn't register every key click) and was also typing some letters over and over again. It seems that it doesn't matter what key I press, the same problem occurs.
I tried using the keyboard on my laptop; it worked perfectly. I also tried connecting up another keyboard I had laying around and that seemed to have the same issue. Both keyboards are mechanical.

I have a wireless keyboard and for some reason it is typing random letters, symbols, and numbers while I am not even touching the keyboard. I tried a different wireless keyboard and that worked for awhile, but even that started to do the same thing. I plugged in a cord keyboard and that has been working fine, but I am unable to type my password if it goes into sleep mode or select my windows partition. It's very confusing and I plan on reinstalling both windows and linux anyways it's that time, but I have to figure this problem out before I do.

I have added a Latvian keyboard layout to my Ubuntu 9.10 system (Russian as the system language). I cannot type Latvian letters with diacritical marks. I chose an apostrophe-based keyboard layout, so that I get the letter I need by pressing an apostrophe before. For example, to get ā, I would press 'a.The problem is, when I press ' followed by a letter or space bar, nothing appears on the screen. I continue typing as normal, but each time I press an apostrophe, the next character I press displays nothing on the screen. I have tried installing a Latvian language pack through System -> Administration -> Language Support. It was generally a useful addition. But it did not solve the problem. I still could not type Latvian. After that, I tried removing the Latvian layout from settings and adding it again. It did not help. I tried removing the layout, restarting my computer, and adding the layout back. The problem was not resolved.
I have tried different Lativan layouts (with tilde, with F, and standard). I had the same problem regardless of the layout I used. I browsed dozens of forum threads, and in one of them I found a workaround for this problem. For example, to type , I hold down Shift and Control together, and while holding them press u0160 (because 0160 is a hex code for in the character map). The first 0 is not significant, so to save time I type u160. I looked up the hex codes for the letters I need in Applications -> Accessories -> Character Map. In that application, at the bottom of the window, for each letter there is a code U+(four hex digits) e.g. U+012A. I wrote out all the codes I need on a small paper slip and stuck it to my monitor.Entering symbols this way is rather inconvenient. But at least it is possible. How to enter Latvian letters using just a Latvian keyboard layout? Is it a bug I should file? Would be great to find out.

I have lirc but I haven't got the hang of it yet. Ive have made a lircmap.xml and put that file in /.xbmc/userdata but xbmc still doesn't respond to it. I have even tried /.xbmc/userdata/keymaps and nothing. You can say that I have lost faith in lirc. I there a program that can translate remote control signals to regular keyboard letters?

I have a problem with my keyboard. Im unable to type single or double quotes, at least not the regular sort that you need to write code in almost any programming language ever invented -which makes it pretty useless.A demonstration.Single left and right tilted quotes:Double quotes: m not able to type a single straight quote at all.I just want my keyboard layout to be standard US like everyone elses so I can get on with my work so does anybody know how to just reset it to a normal layout?

Recently I faced a problem in typing in English in OpenSuse 11.3.When I try to type in English it shows me Greek letter and worse than that I think it is really Greek (not only in font) because when I enter my passwords or try to type a command in terminal I get error,I tested with UK and USA and all other English languages and I still have this problem. I even do reset in my keyboard layout setting and in KDE setting but it didn't help.

I recently logged into my Slackware 13.1 account and when I issued the "startx" command , there was no toolbar at the bottom and I couldn't see my mouse. I was able to click on a short-cut on my desktop , and my mouse came back. I can't open any thing except VirtualBox. When I open it , the top is cut off , so the minimize , maximize and close buttons are cut-off . I really have no idea what to do.P.S. I have XFCE instead of KDE

Gnome, 10.10 (likely not to upgrade to 11.04), HP-dv7t laptop, intel i7 processor. In my ongoing attempt to create a completely mouseless computing experience (and hopefully, one where I never have to leave the home row) I am currently trying to find a way to control the onscreen cursor with my keyboard.
I have found various solutions, but most of them have problems. The accessibility feature that comes with Ubuntu is (for some reason) not installed on my computer and I can't find the package, but other people who have tried the same thing have said that it is not worth the effort anyway, given that it has nonexistent customization.
This shift-numlock function doesn't work at all. Got info from this thread: ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=926105. Gizmod is incredibly complex and doesn't seem to work all that well with my 64 bit hardware. I worked with it for a few hours. But, anyway, do you have any advice that has not already been posted in the other thread?

I am experiencing an annoying problem: It has this weird keyboard issue where whenever I am typing in an application, the cursor will jump up and over a few lines. The problem also happened under Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 and under bios A03.

Two days ago, the down arrow cursor key quit working on my usb keyboard. I could go up, or left and right, but not down. I figured the key was broke and pulled out a PS/2 keyboard and plugged it in. Problem seemed to be solved. This morning, the down arrow cursor key again was not working. I thought that was a weird coincidence, so I plugged in the old usb keyboard, and the down arrow cursor key was again working!

I'm trying to install slackware 32 bit 13.1.After loading kernel it asks for keyboard configuration, but keyboard (usb wireless) doesn't work.
Keyboard works on the old 13.0 installation, on bios and also in the boot options of 13.1 installation cd.
I've tried removing legacy usb support and changing usb2.0 speed from high to full. Nothing changed.
Anybody with this strange problem? (kernel of setup seems also to detect it correctly as a trust keyboard).

What does it mean if you boot from a live CD, the CD spins, a screen appears with the keyboard and human icons at the bottom, then a blank screen appears with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner - and that's it? It just stays that way.
I've tried two different discs, one 10.04 and one 10.10; and two different disc drives.

Yesterday, my mouse cursor in KDE/Qt apps suddenly changed. I always had the 'classic' theme set in systemsettings, and that resulted in a standard pointy arrow cursor. Yesterday, however, as soon as i logged on I had a weird 'triangle with a circle cut out' cursor. In systemsettings, it says this is "KDE Classic Cursor", 'the default cursor for KDE2 and KDE3'. I personally find it rather horrid, so I changed it. However, When I exit X and log back in, the 'classic' cursor is back. No matter which alternative cursor I choose, it only lasts for that session, although the cursor I actually selected is shown highlichted in systemsettings... I have tried deleting my .kde to no avail.
The only change I made before this started happening was adding a line to my .xinitrc to enable a menu called 'yeahlauch' which is part of yeahwm (Although I use xmonad as a WM and no desktop environment, so these cursor troubles happen only in KDE/Qt apps). EDIT: I have tried commenting out the new line and the problem persists.

My laptop's been locking up in Linux (Ubuntu, Backtrack, Puppy) periodically for a while now. When it locked up, it was always immune to the magic of SysRq, which I thought might indicate a hardware problem. It became so bad that I had to stop using the laptop.
Today, when I turned it on and tried to boot into Fedora 12, I got the following error (just once, it just locked up at various points during the splash screen after this once):
double fault: 0000 [#1] SMP
last sysfs file:
CPU 0
odules linked in:
Pid: 1, co m: swapper Not ta nted 2.6.32.11-99.fc 2.x86_64 #VGN-T 250N
RIP: 0010:[<ff
All the seemingly missing letters were really missing, not my typos.
As you can see, kernel version is 2.6.32.11-99.fc12.x86_64 and my laptop is a Sony Vaio TZ 250N (Core 2 Duo ULV 1.2GHZ). Note that with the other remaining kernels from the updates, nothing ever happened other than the locking up. The core temperatures hover pretty high, about 55-60C peak but this is still below the critical temp. Memtest came up clean when the problem first started happening.

Slack 13.0 X sometimes fails to start after boot about 50% of the time. linux says "starting X11 session" then I get a blank screen with a flashing cursor and absolutely nothing else. I can <ctrl>-<alt>-<F7> and get a text prompt, log in, and startx from a command prompt. After that, I can reboot once or twice and still get a graphic login, but will soon revert to the dumped condition. I have reinstalled X and KDE twice now as well as deleting my .kde folder. This condition started when I inadvertently ran out of disk space on my /home drive. Since then I have migrated /home to a larger drive and watch it's disk space very carefully.

However every software installed on my Laptop incredibly slowed down after update to 5.3, It took me 8 mins to open firefox, log into and post to this forum. I don't know if related but I have strange values in system monitor, and the cpu usage is 60% to 80% most of the time even if there is no software running in the foreground.
