I am running Ubuntu 11.04 on a DELL Latitude E6510 (bios A07). I am experiencing an annoying problem: It has this weird keyboard issue where whenever I am typing in an application, the cursor will jump up and over a few lines. The problem also happened under Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 and under bios A03.

As you can see when I started to write sentence the cursor moved in the middle of the word example, and continued writing my sentence.
I've used Ubuntu for a year or two on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 1440), but with the release and install of 10.10, whenever I'm not moving the cursor or typing, it freezes up. I can get it to unfreeze by typing/moving cursor usually.I dual boot between Ubuntu and Mint and it also does this on Mint 10. When I would reboot, the hanging would stop for awhile, but would come back 10 - 20 minutes later. It would continue until I rebooted again. Clearly I can't use 10.10, which is a huge bummer for me.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy keyboard on my laptop has died but I'm on a working vacation, so in the meantime I really need to use my laptop. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to activate the on screen keyboard (onBoard) without typing, except at the log-in screen. There must be some sequence of mouse clicks to get there, otherwise that was a serious design flaw. The other posts I found here explained how to do it but only with typing involved.)
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy keyboard was working fine then all of a sudden it started acting up. Now when I boot into linux the keyboard works fine till I start the Xsever. At first I thought that the keyboard stopped working so I restarted it and still had the same problem. I ended up restarting it 8 times then I finally started to hit the keyboard now when I was done hitting it I kinda kept my hand on it and noticed it still types but I have to hold it for a long period of time for it to start typing. I have to hold the button for like 1-2 Sec for it to type one letter. Then I checked the keyboard setting and they were fine.

For example, between the two previous words I had actually typed "something" ("yesterday something changed") but it was lost. I type at normal speed but the machine cannot keep up. Hopelessly annoying. This happens in every application I have checked. The only unusual thing I did yesterday was to load a bunch of photos off a relative's digital camera. I'm concerned I may have picked up spyware.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a wireless keyboard and for some reason it is typing random letters, symbols, and numbers while I am not even touching the keyboard. I tried a different wireless keyboard and that worked for awhile, but even that started to do the same thing. I plugged in a cord keyboard and that has been working fine, but I am unable to type my password if it goes into sleep mode or select my windows partition. It's very confusing and I plan on reinstalling both windows and linux anyways it's that time, but I have to figure this problem out before I do.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe keyboard is acting strange ever since having to reinstall the gnome desktop, and sound alsa and pulseaudio. The lastest kernel update was what started the whole mess. What is happening is as I type about every 4 or so letter, the pc speaker beeps, and the status leds for caps lock, num lock and the third status leds turn on at random. When I hold down a key and have auto repeat kick in then for each character typed, there is an associated beep. I checked the keyboard setting in user preferences and there is a setting to enable beep on type, but it's not enabled, nor does changing the setting cause a change. I'm pretty sure it's just gnome related, as it doesn't occur in kde, but I can't be 100 % at this point.

Everything was running great until I updated the computer a few days ago. After doing that and turning it on a few hours later, the keyboard started missing letters (as in it wouldn't register every key click) and was also typing some letters over and over again. It seems that it doesn't matter what key I press, the same problem occurs.
I tried using the keyboard on my laptop; it worked perfectly. I also tried connecting up another keyboard I had laying around and that seemed to have the same issue. Both keyboards are mechanical.
I am trying to write a script (especially C-shell) to execute a fortran code that reads in parameters from keyboard typing. I will have to process this .F code for many times with the parameters the same for all my data files, therefore, I don't have to type in everytime I execute the .F code. But I don't know what is the command in c shell to read in a text files that contains all the parameters I want and can make the shell read in appropriately to feed the .F code.

Gnome, 10.10 (likely not to upgrade to 11.04), HP-dv7t laptop, intel i7 processor.In my ongoing attempt to create a completely mouseless computing experience (and hopefully, one where I never have to leave the home row) I am currently trying to find a way to control the onscreen cursor with my keyboard.
I have found various solutions, but most of them have problems. The accessibility feature that comes with Ubuntu is (for some reason) not installed on my computer and I can't find the package, but other people who have tried the same thing have said that it is not worth the effort anyway, given that it has nonexistent customization.
This shift-numlock function doesn't work at all. Got info from this thread: ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=926105. Gizmod is incredibly complex and doesn't seem to work all that well with my 64 bit hardware. I worked with it for a few hours. But, anyway, do you have any advice that has not already been posted in the other thread?
Is there a somewhat straightforward way to get the name or pid of the application that is under the mouse's cursor? What I'm trying to do: This is just a "what if" at this point, I would like to run some script that would obtain the name/pid of any application that the mouse cursor is on, and use xte to assign different functions to different mouse buttons. For instance, assign a given button the Forward or Back function when the cursor is on a browser, but assign a scroll-left or scroll-right to the same button when it's on a spreadsheet. Is there any way to accomplish this, say, in a script that I could run at startup as a background process?

I figured the key was broke and pulled out a PS/2 keyboard and plugged it in. Problem seemed to be solved.This morning, the down arrow cursor key again was not working. I thought that was a weird coincidence, so I plugged in the old usb keyboard, and the down arrow cursor key was again working!

I've tried two different discs, one 10.04 and one 10.10; and two different disc drives.
I have XFCE and xorg-server-1.7.7 in slackware64-13.0. I have my keyboard set up in xorg.conf. X ignores that and takes info from hal. So I have a US keyboard, when I have a UK/IE keyboard actually. When I added openoffice, i found I was getting double letters am getting double letters all over the place, and the cursor blink has slowed too near zero. So when I want to remove them again, the mouse will not land the cursor in the middle of a word to delete the extras. An average of 3 double letters are happening each line. Mouse sometimes works to remove them, usually not. I have set 'repeat delay' at maximum, 'repeat speed' & 'blink delay' at minimum. No effect. Disabled key repeat - still happens.

View 3 Replies View RelatedAny of you ever heard of OS/2 WARP? My dad is a longtime user, as was I until I got my Mac (and now my netbook with Ubuntu). In any case, the OS is a tad...obsolete and my dad at some point wishes to try Ubuntu. In his current setup, he has a "Window List" that can be activated using a keyboard shortcut. It's a popup (not in a menu bar or "panel") that can be moved around and resized. From that you can use your keyboard to navigate to the program or window that you want. For instance, if I want to get to Firefox, I press Ctrl+Escape (to activate the Window List) and then I hit "F" as many times as needed to highlight "Firefox". Then I just hit "Enter" and I'm there. Anything similar out there for Ubuntu (it is preferable if the solution has text as well as icons or else can have the icons removed leaving only the text)
In addition, both him and I would be interested in some program for launching/switching to programs using keyboard shortcuts. On the Mac, I use Quicksilver for this, where it actually Launches the program if it's not open, and switches to it if it is. However, Gnome Do unfortunately lacks this functionality and I have no way to do it off the top of my head.

I tried to use NDN [URL] which is fork of famous DN . It's more advanced then Midnight Commander and I would like to use it to better understand Debian FS and do console works there. However, I have a problem and it seems that their support forum does not work, so I thought to ask for general help here, in case it's something that can be set in Debian. Problem is that when I run this manager I can't use arrow keys or 'num pad' or PgUp/PgDn/.... pad but only 'central part' of keyboard - regular keys and Fx buttons. So I was wondering if there could be some problem between terminal emulation and this application that can cause such behaviour which is unacceptable for normal usage, obviously.

when I call a windows application with wine I cannot type anything when the application asks for it. The typed keys are displayed in the terminal instead. I use a ubuntu-based distro.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIm running netbook remix on a eeepc 1005ha. It is my only OS and Im loving it except for one obnoxious quirk. It randomly cuts text and randomly pastes it. If there is something in the clipboard, it will usually paste that, but just as often it will cut random text and paste that. The pastes occur when the cursor focus jumps back to the location of the cursor on the screen. I dont know a better way to phrase that, but thats what it is doing. Say... I put the cursor over the word "pastes" in the paragraph above... even though Im typing in this paragraph, the focus will "jump" to the cursors physical locale (the word "pastes") and then paste whatever is in the clipboard. If the cursor is outside of the textbox, the page will jump to the bottom.
This behavior occurs across programs and in any place text can be entered. I can find no rhyme or reason for it... it just... happens. Sometimes even when Im away from my computer, so its not like Im hitting some key on accident. I have loved everything about this ubuntu distro, but this issue is just toany obnoxious. Writing psych papers on this thing is going to be near impossible if I dont get this fixed before I go back to school.
Am running Ubuntu NBR as the sole OS on my Dell Mini 9. Switched over in March to 9.10 NBR. Everything worked fine.Upgraded to 10.04 when it was released. It's awesome EXCEPT for this busy cursor thing.As soon as I log in, all the time my cursor is the spinning wheel of busyness.... It works just as a normal cursor would - my computer also does not seem to be slower due to any operations.If I open an application, the cursor will behave as usual within the window but if I more my cursor to the title bar or switch out of the application, the "busy cursor" resumes.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an old acer aspire one that the hard drive has been cooked. the computers fine other then that, so what I'm trying to do is run it using 10.10 net book installed(not installer but actually installed) on a usb drive. I've created the installer on another jump drive and installed it onto the 8 gig using the aspire. everything goes fine, it tell me to reboot so i do and all i get is a black screen with the curser.It responds to nothing and never moves.

Are there any scripts available that will install software that will add more functionality to my new Ubuntu installation? I installed 10.04 on a Dell Desktop circa 2003 with an 80GB HD and 512MB of RAM. Looking forward to using it!! Is this latest Ubuntu release better than XP Pro overall?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to Maverick. I did a clean install on my system. I am running NVIDIA drivers from the X-Swat repo. Whenever I try to play a mkv file using Gnome Mplayer it is very jumpy and laggy. VLC, using it's new hardware acceleration, won't even display video, though it does output the audio. I experienced none of these problems with my 10.04 setup. I am unsure if it is a player bug, a driver bug or something with the VDPAU library itself.
