Software :: Jack Server Not Running Or Cannot Be Started
Jan 19, 2011
Evidently I need to run Jack Control in combination with Qsynth to play my midi keyboard. That was ok for about a week or so, then Jack developed a problem. This was solved the first time by me unticking the Realtime box in Jack setup, but that has not worked this time. Must I rely on Jack just to have my midi keyboard sound?
The errors messages I receive are:
Could not connect to JACK server as client.
- Overall operation failed.
- Unable to connect to server.

Muse will not make sound. The jack server is running, but not from the terminal. I can only get it to run with the Jack control. But it IS running. And still, I hear no sound from muse.Muse is connected to the system in the connection window. So, whats the problem?
I can't get jack working soundcard chipset: EMU10k1X

I am member of audio group. Realtime option unchecked. I also reinstalled ubuntu in a fresh install and the same problem.
I've got an Acer Aspire 5101 with Natty on it and everything works so far, but I can't start Muse. It says: "Muse failed to find a jack audio server". At the bottom it also says: "...if Jack was started check if it was started as the same user as Muse". This might be the issue. But how can I check this? BTW: Jackd has been installed and I am a Member of the Audio Group.
I am new to Ubuntu and don't know how to fix this. I got this Notebook for free, because my Brother wanted to dispose it as it didn't worked properly after he reinstalled xp. Only the dvd-drive is broken, the rest is in really good condition for such an old thing. After a lot of trial and error I could finally install Natty from USB.
My problem is that my fan will keep running quite quickly once started. It will keep running till reboot independently of CPU usage and temperature. To check the temperature I installed lm-sensors. Output of temperature related commands and kernel version are below. Shouldnt they all give the temperature? My machine is a Toshiba Satellite pro L300. Eg. at the moment my fan is running quite quickly although CPU usage is 3-4% and the temperature according to lm-sensors is approximately 40-45 degrees Celcius.
I have lucid and jack almost the way I want. I can't get apps like flash (in firefox) and rhythmbox to run through JACK. I've followed some outdated guides on the forums here, but I haven't had any luck.
I set up gstreamer to use jackaudiosink, but no luck.
If you ask me, JACK + ALSA should be the default, with maybe a simplified or automated control system for people who don't want to exploit their might
I hate having to close up a massive JACK patch just to watch a quick movie, or having to close Pidgin so JACK will start.
How can I get Firefox (and other pulseaudio-using programs) to play while I have jack running? Is there a way to make pulseaudio run through jack? I'm running ubuntu and puredyne distros.
Has anyone else noticed that Firefox started running incredibly slowly? It just happened on two of my computers (one 9.10, the other 8.04 LTS).After starting firefox, it just sits and sits while trying to load a page. Even a local page (my router's config page). It literally takes about 5 minutes to load URL...Other internet apps are working fine, including Opera, which is how I'm writing this.
I have a cronjob which is supposed to run every 15 minutes and record with arecord for 900 seconds. When I run the script manually, arecord record for 900 seconds, but when cron starts the script it stops recording after about 90-110 seconds.
I have been pulling my hair out trying to find out why the Wine System Tray suddenly started appearing in its own little window when running Netmeter, cluttering up the desktop. I searched the web in vain, back many tears, most people saying they couldn't understand it when it happened to them.
Then I realized that the last thing I did was to stop Cairo Dock (the novelty had worn off!) and to move the Gnome Panel to the BOTTOM of the screen in place of Cairo. I suspected this was making the Wine System tray homeless.
So I moved the Gnome panel back to the TOP, restarted Ubuntu, stopped and restarted Netmeter and the Netmeter icon appeared back in the panel where it belonged.
Would I be correct in thinking that Wine System Tray will only stay in the panel if the panel is at the top of the screen?
I recently installed KDE in my ubuntu 10.10. To access KDE, I want to use startx /usr/bin/startkdeBut using it disables sound in KDE (Sound is working fine in GNOME). It doesn't sound for anything like login sound, totem, mplayer or any other playerBut when I press Alt+Ctrl+F1 to change to virtual console, the playback resumes from where it was in time and when coming back Alt+Ctrl+F7 and the time in totem (or any other player) doesn't move. While log out also it doesn't play logout sound and doesn't logout, so I have to press Ctrl+Alt+F1 so that logout sound play then it exits. When starting KDE by kdm or gdm, the sound works normally. But I don't want to login again using kdm or gdm and not to use root user to start kdm or gdm.I don't know what is the difference between when KDE is started by startx or by kdm/gdm where the same user login in kdm/gdm as that for startx
I'm trying to record video of a game I am playing. I am using gtk-recordmydesktop but it records the audio from my mic. This is obviously not what I want. The apparent solution was jack, but I've been having a hard time getting it to run. According to #fedora I was told to get qjackctl and jack capture. When I try to run qjackctl and click the "start" button I get this long nasty error:

JACK will not run ( eg. the server just won't go! ) When running Rosegarden I can not access the Qsynth/Fluidsynth.In the Rosegarden "manage MIDI devices" menu it now shows ONLY one "General Midi Device" -thats all, and I do not know where to/how to get access to qsynth/fluidsynth to use soundfontsIn manage midi devices I ONLY get the option of "general midi"and then its only through "14:0 Midi through port 0 (duplex)" and no other channels are available or offered! If I import one of the devices that come with rosegarden ( like Aleisis ) there is no sound.
Also if anyone knows: (& if I can fix the above) how do I set Rosegarden to use a software synth like ZynAddSubFX on the track/channel? External softsynths do not show up, so how do I assign the channel to use them>
Ps: Rosegarden did not install with the help files, even a complete removal and reinstall does not fix this- hats why I may be asking questions which could possibly be in the Rosegarden manual ( but NOT anywhere online that I've found in 3 days of searching- and I'm a research assistant for cognitive sciences- eg: good at researching! )
Here's the JACK output:

Is the Server or Desktop version of Ubuntu a better choice for a home file (and possibly a media) server?
To explain a little, I currently have a WinXP Pro pc that provides file storage for the users in our home (spouse, kids, self). On this pc I have a windows program ACRONIS running to perform automatic backup of every ones stuff. This has saved me many hours of headaches when someone has a HDD or PC failure. Everyone in the household directs all of their downloading activities to a download partition where I have an anti-virus & anti-malware program monitoring all new entries. This too seems to have been a good decision over the years. I'm trying to sort out which version of Ubuntu will be the most logical entry point.
I expect the questions I am seeking insight for are the normal getting started stuff. Using several different search criteria, I did not hit upon existing threads for the topic If there is a more appropriate forum / sub-forum, please let me know and I will take this question (thread) there.
I am trying to use rosegarden, but it says "midi fine, no audio". I found a thread with this same issue and that said to instal jackd and a synth. So I installed qsynth and tried to start jackd. When starting jackd i get this error:
I try it for the first time. Befor I changed to linux I used MS Windows 7. There I worked much with SonyVegas for video and Adobe Auditon for music. Yesterday I searched for alternatives under Linux for Audition. And I found much. The screen shots says, that they look similar to Auditon. I downloaded them and installed them. But they doesn't work. One of them say they can't connect to Jack. Some of them say nothing, and so they don't record my line in/microphone input. After a few seconds I of search, I knew that all of these programs uses jack for Audio. I installed it, but the situation wasn't better. Then I found a wiki, and try that: first start jack, than start the program. So I do. But there i get a few error messages: At first I should copy to lines to the file lines.conf. I do it. Then I should be member of the audio group. I do that.
Currently have multiple small DNS-323 NAS-in-a-box that need to be replaced with a single storage server.
Since the setting is for an advanced home server (2-3 simultaneous clients max) that will hold movies and application/game ISO's, I was originally going to go with a simple RAID6 on freenas. As I learned about silent data corruption, and with a max of 3 simultaneous users, I don't see a need for a hardware raid processor. So I gathered that software RAIDZ (RAIDZ2) based on ZFS or BTRFS that prevent silent data corruption would be a better match (please correct me if I am wrong).
NEEDS: The needs (in addition to prevention of silent data corruption) are basically online capacity expansion (OCE), and 2+TB volumes (64bit LBA); with a preference for the ability to spin down idle drives. I'm going to make the assumption that any solution I go with will allow me to read/monitor actual SMART drive data.
STUMBLING BLOCK(S): 1. Would someone validate the (perhaps mistaken) assumption that since BTRFS is integrated into the latest Linux kernel, it is mature enough for NAS candidacy. 2. Please validate: Forward-compatibility of BTRFS has been stated (no need to reformat with subsequent BTRFS updates). 3. Am I missing any NAS software (open-source or otherwise) that would meet these requirements and provide a nice pretty graphical interface? 4. What software solution would you recommend? (btrfs on xxxxx? zfs-fuse? linux+xfs (+mdadm)? ..?) 5. What are my next steps?
Accumulated hardware for project: SERVER: 3u chassis with 16hot swap trays. Tyan S5360G2NR i7520 mainboard. Single Intel 2.8Ghz CPU (dual-capable). 4GB ECC RAM (do i need more?). Dual hot-swappable 550W psu. CD-ROM DRIVES: Eight 1.5Tb SATA drives, plus an additional four that are in-use in the DNS323 that I will migrate over using OCE. Four 750 SATA drives that are also in-use and can be migrated over via OCE. One 16Gb SATA SSD, intended for Boot OS and logs. INTERFACE CARDS: Two 3Ware Escalade 9500S-8 8Port SATA RAID (PCI-X, 64bit) [can change these to something else]. UPS: 1500VA
At our university server, I patched together a script (lets call it connect.py) that kind of glues together a series of calls to different other programs (the first one is in Python2.X, the second is a binary so I use os.system('/path/to/program input.pot') to start it, and the last is in Python3.X). It kind of seems to work well now when working under my user account, where the script has the permissions to call the programs, because I installed them. Now, when I want to start the connect script by pressing a submit button in an HTML form, naturally I start running into trouble. Now its no longer my user who is calling, but the server (Apache) with very limited rights. In the progress of writing the connect.py script, I had to do quite some environment adjustment so the various Python modules could be imported.
What is the easiest way to get the script started from an HTML form? I guess it would not be good practice to start extending the PATH variables of Apache, would it?
Im a composer and I loaded up on some excellent applications for music creation and notation- so excited.. I start with Rosegarden. Failed to connect to JACK audio server. Try my other applications, same problem. Basically the JACK audio server just WILL NOT RUN (correctly). I can sudo it and press start, but still it wont "play with" the applications! Heres the error message from JACK (I also get related errors when I try to do ANYTHING involving music creation):
error JACK Audio Connection Kit -overall operation failed -unable to connect to server Here is the "fatal error" from MusE "Failed to Find Jack Audio Server" This is the JACK output:
jack uses 2 ports for input and 2 for output. I have a SoundBlaster 5.1vx card, and I would like to use a "line-out" plug for monitoring. But when I try to get jack to reserve four extra outputs by using the switch "-o 4", it gives me an error.
For some reasons I need to configure ubuntu in such way that it would turn off the computer if X-server or GDM hasn't started (but user is able to log in). By the way, what are the reasons for such situation besides errors with video drivers?
I was told that I should write a script, but I have no idea how to write scripts and where I should place it (I suppose in init.d with some parameters).
I am having some problems with rsync,I put the rsync command in a shell script, and I am calling the shell from a 3rd server, but it stops midway through.s anyone else experienced these problems?
I am re setting up a server of mine running red hat enterprise Linux server 6 and I had all of this working befor but for some reason I had troubles getting sasl to work and now when I login my smtp server I get an error stating that my username or password is incorrect though I am sure I am entering both correctly. Would anyone know what could be happening? I have been spending days on the web looking for the solution and only went from sasl not working when started as a service to this. For some reason I can't use Pam with saslauthd and had to use shadow instead of which from what I hear I get to use better methods of secure authentication with smtp
I need to find the list of file being tagged by user jack starting from a given date.Eg:Tag Name:lcc_dev_p1User: jackDate: >= 2011-03-02can some done tell me what is the cvs command for this.Should the below command give the correct outputcvs log -R -S -N -rlcc_dev_p1 -d">=2011-03-13" -wjack > /tmp/output.txt
After installing I was not able to get many of the audio programmes to work. After some reading, I realised that this was probably due to jack not starting.
I was unable to get jack to start normally but have been able to get it started with the playback only option selected. Programmes that use jack now work, however there is no sound once jack has been started. The sound does work in other programs when jack is not started. Strangely, I only have to open qjackctl for the sound to stop, and jack is not even started. Initially I thought these problems were due to my sound card not being supported, but I believe that alsa support was added for the via 1708 codec at some point. I found that support had been added in a document showing the changes between alsa versions; however I cannot find the exact model listed as a supported sound card on the alsa site.
I believe that altering jack settings could fix the problem, as i have been able to get audio to work in hydrogen by selecting plughw:0 but there is still no sound in other programs. I have tried altering many other settings but to no avail, however I do not really understand the meaning of the settings that i am adjusting.
Does anyone know what settings to adjust or know something else that might fix this problem so that sound works once jack has been started?
Also, would programmes that use jack such as audacity, hydrogen, and ardour work with pulseaudio as the main sound server if I were to install normal ubuntu - it might be worth seeing if my soundcard works with the puleaudio sound server
if this helps, here is the error message received when jack does not start when the normal duplex option is selected.

also, when i open alsamixer in the terminal for some reason the headphone part is greyed out, even when the sound is working before qjackctl is opened.
I'm having a very strange problem with red hat cluster. After testing it in the lab, I tried to install a new cluster and received the following error: cman not started: Cannot start, cluster name is too long or other CCS error /usr/sbin/cman_tool: aisexec daemon didn't start I've checked the internet for that error, but nothing. I decided to to take the example from cluster.conf man, which looks like that :
[Code]...
And still I get the same error. I can find my servers both from DNS (FQDN and short name) and they also appear in /etc/hosts.
