Slackware :: Unable To Identify Tty Name Error On New Install
Oct 4, 2010Just installed slackware 13.0 32bits using the usb-based netinstall. Did a minimal cli install and unchecked bash (since I wanted to use tcsh on this particular OS). But now on first boot it tells me that it shows an error message indicating "unable to identify tty name" and won't let me login (I'm using the root account since I haven't yet set up additional users). My question is, is the error happening because I unselected bash during installation? If so, is there any config file that I can modify to get it to recognize tcsh and let me log in? or if that isn't the problem, where do I set then the tty name?

Jun 5, 2011When I click on the application button on Ubuntu 11.04, no search results come up when I type in the search box. For example, if I type in "gedit" nothing appears, and no results appear for "text editor" either. I've tried all case variations, too. Gedit is just an example of a program I know I have installed but still won't come up in search. How do I fix this? Unity is quite useless without it.

Apr 5, 2011i guess this is an installation issue as i am newish to Linux and got a F14 laptop from a used/refurb store... Anyway it seem i have difficulty with getting GTK running or maybe it is WGET...?
i did manage to install apt-get and was able to run synaptics ... but now whenever i try to run synaptics it flashes the interface and crashes. i tried apt-get search wget and it says invalid operation search. i tried apt cache wget and get a crash box in the upper right corner... i tried apt-get gtk+extra-2.1.2-4.fc14 and it says invalid operation gtk...
All of which is frustrating my attempts to get the GTK interface to J working. Their script uses WGET which i also cannot get.

Sep 10, 2010I have installed Ubuntu for netbooks on my four year old laptop and of course the wifi card is unable to search for wireless networks when I'm booted into Ubuntu. I do have the driver software on a recovery disk. Would installing it in Ubuntu fix my problems?

Jan 18, 2010I've got everything installed so far that I need and everything is customized down to the boot splash and the mouse theme. I'm using fluxbox on the newest debian (5.0.3). But for some reason I just CANT change the default icons theme for gtk apps like thunar. I've installed the gnome icons theme and that one works fine.
I've tried editing ~/.gtkrc-2.0.mine as well as ~/.gtkrc-2.0 by add the line gtk-icon-theme-name="theme" but it just doesn't work even after doing a restart. I've also tried putting the icons folder under /usr/share/icons as well as ~/.icons but still nothing...

1)I added an icon named Backtrack.png to /boot/burg/themes
2)modified the /boot/burg/themes/icons/large file to have in the class block
3)modified /etc/burg.d/40_custom for the entry Backtrack to
menuentry "BackTrack 4.0" --class backtrack --class os --group group_/dev/sda7
Still on loading the place for Backtrack is Occupied by the image for Unknown Classes...

I have created and SVG file and placed it in /usr/shared/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/ and when I try to select it as the icon for the application launcher, it just goes back to the gnome-panel-launcher.svg default.If I put the SVG file on my desktop and then select it, all is well. I'm assuming this is some type of permission problem, but I cannot seem to figure it out. I have set the permissions to be identical to the other icons in /usr/shared/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/, but have no luck doing that either.

May 1, 2011I've installed Office 2007 under wine, and would like to add launchers for Word, Excel, etc to the Unity launcher bar.
So, I've created a launcher on the Desktop that will run Word with wine. I've changed the icon to the Word Icon and everything works great from the desktop. If I drag that launcher to the Unity bar, it adds it, but changes the icon to the springboard default icon that new launchers use. Please see attached picture.
As a side note, I am really starting to like Unity (puts on flamesuit), but it seems very easy to break the install of 11.04. I've had to reinstall 4 times now.
