View 1 Repliesi just upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 the netbook distro. at the desktop view there is a list of about 10 buttons/menus listed on the left hand side, is there anyway to control what buttons/menus are listed and which icons are listed under each of them? having a netbook i would like to remove and unclutter the desktop view as much as possible but i dont want to remove those apps i still want to be able to open those apps if i want to even if by removing those icons and menus/buttons makes it a pain.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running Suse 11.1 64bit, with KDE, recently I received a pop up on my screen, "something about update problems", I used Yast 2 and selected online Update and it couldn't find updates for Nvidia and froze at that point. I dis-enabled that repository and refreshed all of the remaining Repositories individually and it seemed to work. I then went to the repositories listing and selected "Add" and selected "community" repositories and received the following: WARNING Unable to download list of repositories or no repositories defined. What is my problem? How do I acquire the list of community repositories? I can live with out the Nvidia repository for now but would eventually like to get it back.

I looked in sound props and didn't find one either. I have had other versions of Ubuntu and had no problems. the machine I've loaded is a Toshiba laptop.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI had Windows XP and Suse 9.2 running in a 486 Optima MyPC.A toggle switch connected to the master pins of 2 40GB hard drives allowed either operating system to be selected for boot up.The Optima recently died, the 2 hard drives and selector switch have been located in a Dell Dimensions 8300 Bios Rev A04.Needless to say Windows will not start but Suse does and the data on both drives is viewable and Open Office 1.1 useable.The 2 DVD/CD drives in the Dell unit are not detected.How do make these drives operational?You will appreciate I am not too familiar with Suse Linux, having tried several methods I often get "You don't have permission" or similar.How do I change to the Top Level Permission?

I have been using Suse Linux for years and I must ask some basic questions about repositories which may be elementary to many. Recently I was redirected to a repository with over 30 rpms and I figured it is time to ask the questions. Is it implied that when you go to a repository that one has to select and install all the listed rpm's?
If so, which order do you use? Is there some tool to load all at once instead of individually? If not, is there an intelligent way to select the ones you need or does one simply use "trial and error" approach? Can you skip development rpms?
Is there a particular app listed as apparmor, or is it a series of separate programs that act as a whole? if the latter, which programs are these. i just got really lucky with my installation of 11.2, and I'm trying to confirm my success.

I did some searching, but haven't found a good solution to this problem I'm having. While there are a lot of issues with syncing between my desktop and netbook (we'll get to them another time), I am really trying to get two folders from my desktop to sync to Ubuntu One. I followed the reinstall steps here a few times and it has almost fixed the problem.
My last issue is that my .mozilla folder won't sync at all. If I right click on it in Nautilus, I get a greyed out "stop syncing with Ubuntu One." I can't stop it and can't start it. If I do u1sdtool --list-folders, then this folder isn't shown. I've tried disconnecting, reconnecting, and a lot in between.My question is, is there a config file or something like that where maybe this .mozilla folder is still set up that I can just delete? Clearly, it thinks it's set up when it isn't and I'm not sure if there's somewhere on the filesystem that can be checked or cleared. One thing I did notice when I was going through the instructions above is that I don't have a .share folder and thus no /local/ubuntuone under that.
I have UBUNTU 9.10 Karmic Koala over Thinkpad R-61i. Whenever i boot my system i have the following message waiting for me,

For some reason, my CD/DVD drive is not visible in Nautilus. I I can't see it either as a top-level item in Tree or Places views or in File System > /media. There is a /media/cdrom entry, but nothing in it, even with a DVD in the drive. When I type "sudo blkid," there is no entry for the DVD drive. It is physically connected and I can read from it when I dual-boot into Windows XP; just can't find it in Ubuntu

Can anyone explain to me why there are sometimes 10 or 15 processes with the same title and "stats" listed in htop? I'm guessing there are multiple threads running - but that many of them obviously couldn't be running concurrently.
Is there any sort of performance hit taken if a process uses say, 15 non-concurrent threads vs. 10 non-concurrent threads?
I am not an advanced Linux user. I have a VPS with 768MB of RAM running CentOS.I executed the lsof command as root and I see that there is a list of 3000 files. Usually, how many files should be there? My system is getting very slow, so is this list too long?How do I know which files to keep and which to close?I have seen that there are multiple copies of the same files with different PIDs. Now I notice that in my Grub there are two different kernel versions listed. Are they both necessary? Can I / should I get rid of the older one, and if so, how?
I ask because after all these updates I notice my computer runs much slower, so I don't want it overloaded with unnecessary software.
I just installed Karmic. My HDSP is detected (listed in aplay -l and alsamixer) and the firmware is loaded. No errors from dmesg.
Yet no sound... It is not listed in the Sound Preferences GUI.
