SUSE :: CD / DVD Drives Not Listed

Mar 14, 2010

I had Windows XP and Suse 9.2 running in a 486 Optima MyPC.A toggle switch connected to the master pins of 2 40GB hard drives allowed either operating system to be selected for boot up.The Optima recently died, the 2 hard drives and selector switch have been located in a Dell Dimensions 8300 Bios Rev A04.Needless to say Windows will not start but Suse does and the data on both drives is viewable and Open Office 1.1 useable. The 2 DVD/CD drives in the Dell unit are not detected. How do make these drives operational? You will appreciate I am not too familiar with Suse Linux, having tried several methods I often get "You don't have permission" or similar. How do I change to the Top Level Permission?

Hardware :: USB Drives Not Listed In Fdisk And Unable To Mount?

Mar 13, 2010

New server ubuntu 9.10 install with Samba set up. Drives were mounted before Samba, but after samba was set up and I can see the server on a windows network, I can not get the usb external drives to mount or be seen at all. I also added ubuntu desktop. I used this link to set up the server and samba. [URL]

The external drive is a box of 4 drives formatted as ntfs, worked fine before I set up Samba. I am assuming when I edited the fstab toward the end I did something, just not sure what. The drives are (or were showing up as) /dev/sdb1, sdc1, sdd1, and sde1. I tried to follow the wiki on how to maybe set up automounting and thats when I found they werent even showing up in fdisk. "Unable to mount location, failed to mount windows share"

Ubuntu :: Drives Not Listed After Removing Raid Works In Windows 7?

Oct 29, 2010

I have two 1.5TB hard drives (neither one are my OS drives) that don't show up under "Places", but are detected under "Disk Utility". I tried to reformat them, but Ubuntu tells me that they are in use (even they are not mounted). gparted also detects them and shows them as being NTFS parition. I have deleted and repartitioned to NTFS as well. This works until I restart my computer. The funny thing is that Windows 7 sees them just fine. More detail as to how this happened below after system specs.

System:

AMD Phenom II x 4 955
ASUS M4A79XT EVO motherboard
8GB DDR3 1333
1 500GB WD SATA drive (dual boot Windows 7 & Ubuntu 10.10)
2 1TB WD SATA drives (extra storage)
2 1.5TB Seagate SATA drives (extra storage, these are the problem children)

Here's how I got here:

Installed a dual boot w/ Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. Everything was fine and ALL drives showed up and were mountable in Ubuntu. I decided to set up a RAID 1 w/ my two 1.5TB drives. I restarted, changed my SATA to be RAID instead of IDE and created my RAID 1. I then realized that through this motherboard's RAID setup, I couldn't have it copy files from one disk to the other to set up the mirror. So, after I rebooted and the RAID started building, I cut the power and unplugged my drives in a desparate attempt to keep my data. I then went back into the bios and set my SATA back into IDE instead of RAID. I was able to back up my data, but this is when the problem started.

Again, Windows 7 sees and uses the drives just fine. I copied the data I wanted from my 1.5TB drives to my 1TB drives and restarted into Ubuntu. But, no 1.5TB drives appeared under Places. I started Disk Utility and confirmed that Ubuntu does actually see the drives. However, it still lists them as being part of a RAID array (I did delete my RAID array properly through the BIOS after backing up my data). I'm not sure why it thinks that and I believe that's my problem. Also, Disk Utility lists a THIRD 1.5TB drive under "USB and Peripherals". Could that be my MB telling Ubuntu that a RAID is still set up even though I deleted the RAID pair?

What I have tried:Reformatted drives via Windows 7 as NTFS. This completed but didn't solve my problem.Repartitioned the drives with gparted as NTFS. This works until I restart my computer. Attempted to reformat under Ubuntu, but it gives me an error saying the drives are busy.Reinstalled Ubuntu (but didn't reformat). Didn't work. What I'm thinking:Flash my BIOS so my MB starts out fresh and hopefully doesn't tell Ubuntu I have a RAID anymore. Reinstall Ubuntu again (this time reformatting my OS drive).
Anyone have ideas as to what's going on? FYI I'm new to Ubuntu.

SUSE / Novell :: Where Is Video Card Info Listed In 11.3 - Large Icons On Desktop

Aug 10, 2010

I just did an install from opensuse 11.0 to 11.3 using the live web install. After the install, I found that the monitor always reverts to 87hz refresh rate and must be manually adjusted to 60hz. Also, there is no adjustment for the monitor resolution beyond 1024 x 768. I can not find the video card info in yast like it was before. Do I need to add the ati sources in yast? Will that give me a way to adjust the video card properties? Video card is the ati rage. Box is a dell optiplex pentium 3.

SUSE / Novell :: Install Fails To Recognize Ide Hard Drives

Aug 25, 2010

I have an Intel MB (855GME with 6300ESB) that I'm having trouble installing OpenSUSE 11.1 onto the IDE drive. It will install to a SATA drive but for various reasons I need to install on IDE (PATA on 6300ESB). The install fails to find any ide drive (I know the drive/interface works because I can install XP on this same ide drive and boot from it). If I parse the dmesg output I see the message "ata_piix 0000:1f.1 device not available because of BAR 2 (0x0-0x7) collisions". I'm trying to determine if there's some workaround for this. I've tried various kernel parameters and no joy.

I've tried Ubuntu with similar results. Older kernels WILL install onto this same MB/PATA controller (Ubuntu 6.06, 2.6.15 and RHEL4) so it seems that something changed in the ATA driver as the kernel has matured and my bios isn't up to snuff for these pickier drivers.

SUSE :: Access Windows Drives With Write Access

Mar 12, 2010

I am dual booting OpenSuse 11.2 and Windows 7 both 64bit on my PC. I've got VMware workstation installed on both. I've got few virtual machines which were all created in Windows VMware and they're all stored on a separate partition. I can access this partition and all other NTFS partition from Suse but with read-only permissions. That means I can't run any of these virtual machines from Suse VMware. Is there any possible way to make all these drives writeable from Suse? I'm really hoping someone would be able to help me. I've got a lot of googling and have even searched this forum but without any luck.

Ubuntu Servers :: RAID-1 OS Drives - Setting Up A Backup Procedure For The OS Drives

Jan 18, 2010

I'm breaking into the OS drive side with RAID-1 now. I have my server set up with a pair of 80 GB drives, mirrored (RAID-1) and have been testing the fail-over and rebuild process. Works great physically failing out either drive. Great! My next quest is setting up a backup procedure for the OS drives, and I want to know how others are doing this.

Here's what I was thinking, and I'd love some feedback: Fail one of the disks out of the RAID-1, then image it to a file, saved on an external disk, using the dd command (if memory serves, it would be something like "sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=backupfilename.img") Then, re-add the failed disk back into the array. In the event I needed to roll back to one of those snapshots, I would just use the "dd" command to dump the image back on to an appropriate hard disk, boot to it, and rebuild the RAID-1 from that.

Does that sound like a good practice, or is there a better way? A couple notes: I do not have the luxury of a stack of extra disks, so I cannot just do the standard mirror breaks and keep the disks on-hand, and using something like a tape drive is also not an option.

Server :: 2 Separate External Hard Drives With ESata To Minimize An Electrical Failure To The Drives?

Mar 26, 2011

I am building a home server that will host a multitude of files; from mp3s to ebooks to FEA software and files. I don't know if RAID is the right thing for me. This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data

General :: Files That Span Multiple Drives Drives?

Jan 8, 2010

So, at the moment I have a 7TB LVM with 1 group and one logical volume. In all honesty I don't back up this information. It is filled with data that I can "afford" to lose, but... would rather not. How do LVMs fail? If I lose a 1.5TB drive that is part of the LVM does that mean at most I could lose 1.5TB of data? Or can files span more than one drive? if so, would it just be one file what would span two drives? or could there be many files that span multiple drives drives? Essentially. I'm just curious, in a general, in a high level sense about LVM safety. What are the risks that are involved?

Edit: what happens if I boot up the computer with a drive missing from the lvm? Is there a first primary drive?

SUSE :: Flashing BIOS On Toshiba Satellite A105 S 4547 Laptop SUSe 11.2

Jan 14, 2010

I bought this laptop several years ago. It had Vista. Just long enough for me to download SUSe, nuke and pave the HD and install Linux. Recently I upgraded from 1 GB to 4 GB of RAM, the maximum that is allowed given the motherboard (based on from what I am able to learn the Intel 945 chipset).

After upgrading to 4 GB, the machine (according to "My Computer") only sees 2.9 GB. I understand that under an earlier version of the BIOS that the machine would not recognize the RAM correctly. Additionally the "My Computer" page lists the display as "Intel 945GM". My problem is that I can find no Linux utility to flash the BIOS on this machine-- Toshiba only provides the BIOS included in an .exe file for either XP or Vista. I am hesitant to use the BIOS for the Intel 945 series motherboards from their site.
