When i reinstalled Ubuntu i reinstall it on top of an existing not working ubuntu so now in the boot menu i still have 2.6.35-6-generic menu items but i can't find 2.6.35-6-generic anywhere how can i fix it?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI reinstalled Natty yesterday and then installed Fedora on a separate partition.
I now havedouble the menu items in GRUB2 for both of these.
I ran the update grub command in the terminal and it goes smoothly, but the extra menu items still don't go away.
Puzzingly the menu items point to the same partition on the drive as their clone. Both of the Fedora menu items point to sda8
For example.
tl;dr:
How can I remove menu entries in GRUB? I searched but could not find a reliable answer other than re-running update-grub.
How could I remove GRUB and replace it with Plymouth? Ubuntu Software Centre actually shows Plymouth as "Installed" even though it does not run on startup.
I just did a fresh install of Slackware 13.1:
However, I get 4 grub listings for Slackware.

3.... welcome to Linux 2.6.33.4 (tty1)
4. Welcom to Linux 2.6.33.4-smp (tty1)
I have never had any trouble with grub, and consequently never had to edit much in grub.
I installed grub from the extras directory on the Slackware DVD in the hope that it would 'find' all my linux systems and XP. (LILO would not find them.)It sort of found then, in that they seem to be listed in the grub menu at start up, but only the 'title Windows XP on (/dev/sda1)' and 'title Linux on (/dev/sda7)' actually launch.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have asked this question several times but I think that I am not asking it correctly. I have umbutu 9.04 and Windows 7.0 on my C: drive. When I start my machine I have approximately 9 or 10 items on my boot list and I would like to have 2.It has been suggested that I determine what version of grub I am using and I am using /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.28-19 generic. I have no idea what that means.It has been suggested that I install some various items of software and I am sure that it would solve my problem but to me it would be like looking down a cows throat. Please, don't get me wrong, I really appreciate the input but its like when you go to the doctor you kind of wonder "just what the heck is he talking about". Maybe someone could just tell me how to accomplish what I want to do so I can understand!My daughter uses this machine and she goes to places that I didn't know I had.

View 9 Replies View Relatedmy Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI would like to know if there is any differences on how to install and to configure GRUB 2 in the different architectures (BIOS/IBM PC-Compatibles, EFI/MacIntel and Corebbot)? Does the Ubuntu installer automatically recognize the different architectures and install the appropriate GRUB 2 package ('grub-pc', 'grub-efi' or 'grub-coreboot' according to the arch)? Or does it just install 'grub-pc'? Is the location of GRUB 2's configuration files different depending on the arch of the computer? Or are they all located in '/boot/grub/', '/etc/grub/default' and '/etc/grub.d/', no matter the arch of the computer? Are the files' structure and options to configure GRUB 2 ('/etc/grub/default' and the scripts in '/etc/grub.d/') different depending on the arch of the computer?
View 3 Replies View RelatedOkay, two packages in question here: sshd and xrdp.
In the /etc/rc.d/rc5.d directory there is a K??sshd link, I'm not really sure why the default is to kill sshd in graphical mode, but it's there. I saw it coincidentally when I went to add an S??xrdp link so that I could have xrdp run when the computer starts. I restarted the computer, and of course, couldn't connect via my Windows Remote Desktop client. A quick ps -e | grep xrdp in a terminal window showed me that xrdp had not, in fact, started.
I hop back in to ??/rc5.d to see if I messed up creating my link and poof. there's no more S??xrdp link, furthermore, the K??sshd link that I had removed was back.
Okay, so Fedora doesn't like you messing with the init links manually... I can dig it, cause there's this nifty gui tool to manage startup items... I go in to that and add entries for sshd and xrdp, calling them via their init scripts so I can make sure everything plays nicely... then restart.
Oh, wait, still no xrdp or sshd running.
If I manually start these servers using their init scripts from a terminal they run fine, no issues, but I don't want to do that, and I think we can all agree that I should't have to. What am I doing wrong? What is the 'proper' way to add servers to the startup process and since entering runlevel 5 apparently kills sshd, how do I prevent that?
I have a second HDD oon the computer and the fedora system can see it so that is no problem. The problem is that when i want to make a folder or put a file on that HDD i get the message:
Error while copying "filename".
There was an error copying the file into /media/a53d6b68-7242-4f43-8cd9-8dfc1b592ad2.
Error opening file '/media/a53d6b68-7242-4f43-8cd9-8dfc1b592ad2/filename': Permission denied
How can i solve this? (and how can i make the disk called something else then a53d6b68-7242-4f43-8cd9-8dfc1b592ad2)
Also there is a folder on the disk named "lost+found" what is this and why is it there?
i can't seem to move around applets along the top panel. everything seems strangely fixed ever since i upgraded to lucid.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed a dual boot Windows 7 / Ubuntu netbook remix 10.04 yesterday.So far so good, everything works fine.
However, i would like to get rid of the little enveloppe in the menu bar, more precisely in what i think is called the notification area. i have found some stuff online about how I'm supposed to delete a package and restart, quite unsuccessful method really, since the envelope is still there.
Plus whenI right click on the menu bar to pin / unpin items, it doesnt work, all the submenus are greyed out.
Is it possible to add items to the Add to Panel menu to increase it's functionality and offer more options?
View 3 Replies View RelatedDeleting unwanted items from the Unity Sidebar is easy.
but how do you add to it? I'd like to add Terminal, Calibre and some other things to the sidebar for easier access.
I would also like to move Google Chrome to the top of the bar, instead of the middle.
So how does one customize this side bar in Unity?
other than not knowing how to customize my applications in the sidebar, Unity is pretty awesome.
When I choose System --> Preferences --> Screensaver, it runs x-screensaver instead of gnome-screensaver, BUT, in /usr/share/applications, I have the file:
gnome-screensaver-preferences.desktop
And the contents are:
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Screensaver
Comment=Set your screensaver preferences
Icon=preferences-desktop-screensaver
Exec=gnome-screensaver-preferences
[Code]....
So it should be launching gnome-screensaver, not x-scrensaver. Where on earth is x-screensaver getting launched from? I thought the menu was determined by /usr/share/applications. (By the way, I did previously have x-screensaver instead of gnome, I am trying to put it back how it was. I have more-or-less succeeded, except this Menu item which is puzzling me.)
i recently install NTFS-Config and Auto-mount my NTFS_partitions... They are now successfully mounting in Start-up, but whenever i try to remove something(within) NTFS partition, the removing item is not going to Trash,its just deleting that item permanently,
My fstab :-
Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.

# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
[Code]....
I have a very annoying problem. I cannot move any panel items to the upper right hand corner... But I can move them to any other panel, right or left.I right click the item.Then I click Move.Then I click the upper right hand corner.Then nothing happens, except if there is a group of buttons side-by-side then the right-clicked item will move to the far right of the group
