Software :: Grub Fails To Update After A Disk Change?

Dec 20, 2008

I'm using Debian 4.0 Etch (AMD64) with some programs from the testing area. It was installed on a IDE hard disk, and the troubles started when I changed the disk to a SATA one.My system had two hard disks (hda and hdb) and two optical drives (hdc and hdd). Now, the hard drives are sda and hda, and the optical drives remains as hdc and hdd. After the disk change, it didn't work because all references in menu.lst were still pointing at hda. I changed to sda and everything works fine... until next kernel update.Every time the kernel is updated, grub changes all references to hda, so Linux don't boot until I edit menu.lst. I've also changed /boot/grub/device.map, but it doesn't work.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04.1 Install Fails To Boot -> Error: Out Of Disk, Grub Rescue

Jul 13, 2011

Downloaded Ubuntu 10.04.1 Desktop AMD64, tried to install it to a cleand HDD using the whole HDD, i.e. gave it permission to use the whole HDD. Installation process appeared to run OK but when it came to the restart it just fired up the message

error: out of disk
grub rescue>

I've searched this forum and found numerous references to these error messages but cannot make head nor tail of the diagnostic suggestions. Apart from anything else they suggest strings of command lines which I don't understand and can't enter anyway since they don't correspond to my keyboard layout (if I hit > or ) something completely different appears on the screen). Is there someone here who can provide a step-by-step solution in lay language ? Or is there such a thing as a bootable file which can be downloaded and inserted into my CD drive to correct this problem ?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Change Grub Order After Update To 11.04

Jun 13, 2011

I have a dual boot system w7 and ubunutu. When i had version 10.10 (i think) everything was working fine, the grub would select w7 as boot preference. I have, however just updated to 11.04 and i cant get the grub to change its order. I have tried using startupmanager and selecting the second to last one, as per tips and i have also tried all the options. I have also tried editing the grub file, i think its /etc/default/grub. i have also tried grub-customizer but again, this doesnt work.

I have noticed however that the options shown arent the same as the options when i boot my system. Im not sure whether i have got two GRUBS installed or something like that. I have also tried using boot-repair, however this just states that there is no GRUB installed, however as i mentioned, i can read the grub, and so can the programs.

I installed ubuntu on sda 7 (when I go into disk utilities it shows up as sda 7 idk why) alongside another ubuntu on sda 5 ( EXTENDEDPARTITION : sda 5-6-7 ) so I could remove mandriva bootloader.Since I did, I removed ubuntu (sda 7) since it wasn't necessary but after it gave me the grub file not found.Obviously yes, since GRUB was installed from sda 7 but i have another grub.conf on sda 5 and I would like to know how to change the path of the grub reader to sda 5? or must I install all over again de grub loader?

Ubuntu :: Booting From NForce FakeRAID - Hand Correct Grub.cfg After Update-grub?

Mar 5, 2011

I was unaware of the difficulties of installing and booting Ubuntu from the "onboard raid" that the NVIDIA nForce chipsets provide. However, I've managed to get it working reliably with one single caveat:

When update-grub builds the grub.cfg, it refers to all of my partitions as follows:

Code:
menuentry 'Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.35-27-generic' --class ubuntu --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os {
recordfail
insmod part_msdos
insmod ext2
set root='(/dev/mapper/nvidia_caifaefg,msdos5)'

[Code]...

So I'm guessing that the whole nvidia_blah,msdos5 is because of that. However, it doesn't seem to explain why Grub would THINK that would work and it in fact does not work. That's the biggest source of confusion on my part.

My questions are as follows: First off, because as an IT person I want to know: Why does this sort of change work? What does changing that device name change in GRUB's behavior? Is there a setting in /etc/default/grub that would change the way it's naming these RAID devices? Is there a value for this setting that would give me the device names that work, as explained above?

If there is no setting change I can make in /etc/default/grub, could I add a sed command on to the end of update-grub or can I make a modification to one of the scripts in /etc/grub.d? What sort of change would be recommended? How would I preserve this change through later package upgrades that would possibly rewrite these files?

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot/grub/win7 - Testdisk/update-grub Method, But It Didn't Work?

Mar 4, 2011

I have 2 hard disks. sda,sdb

In sda, I have 4 partitions, and I have windows 7 in one of the extended partitions [not in the primary partition].

In sdb, I have 3 partitions. 2 for storage, and 1 10GB drive for Ubuntu. Again, Ubuntu is not of a primary partition.

I had ubuntu 10.04 running on that for a long time. However, I wanted to reinstall ubuntu and use 10.10.This is what I did EXACTLY:Booted from Ubuntu install CD

Chose advanced istall

Selected sdb3 for Ubuntu

I installed GRUB2 on the SAME partition as Ubuntu aka sdb3 Installed then rebooted

I can boot into Ubuntu fine, but whenever I select Windows 7 bootloader from the GRUB menu, the screen goes black, and my PC reboots.

Boot Info:

Code:
Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010 [code]....

ls: reading directory sda6/: Input/output error

I have tried the testdisk/update-grub method, but it didn't work.

However, doing so every time is time consuming; and I cannot change anything in the defaults and run update-grub without obtaining a grub prompt on restart. How do I fix this?

Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

Ubuntu :: Trying To Add RAM Disk But Fstab Fails To Boot

May 26, 2010

I was able to successfully create a small, fixed-size "ram disk" just for kicks, via:

Code:
sudo mkfs -t ext3 -q /dev/ram1 65536
sudo mkdir -p /media/ramdisk
sudo mount /dev/ram1 /media/ramdisk -o defaults,rw
However, I wanted it to auto-boot, so I added the line to fstab:

Code:
/dev/ram1 /media/ramdisk ext3 defaults 0 0

This, however, rendered Ubuntu unbootable and I had to repair the fstab by removing the line via a Live CD. I had enough patience to boot through the CD an extra time to see if just deleting "ext3" would work, but it did not. What would cause this to make the system unbootable and how I could make it work?

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Fails To Boot With 'No Such Disk' Error

The drives are two Hitachi 1 Tbyte hdd's configured as RAID1, an ASUS M4A78T-E motherboard with an AMD Phenom-II cpu with 8 Gbyte of memory. I updated the bios following building the computer. The Ubuntu 9.10 server installation appears to go without error. However, on reboot I get the message:

Grub loading

I suspect the MBR is missing or Linux is not pointing to the correct drive in the grub.cfg.I've made sure the boot order is correct, but other than that I don't really know the commands or syntax to troubleshoot this problem. The only CD I have is the Ubuntu 9.10 server ISO I downloaded and burned to dvd.

I have created partitions using gparted and the disktool also sees the drive just fine but as soon as I go back to the installer it shows no hard disk!

It's a SATA drive which I suspect might be a part of the problem.

Is there a way I can install without the install program?

Is there a way to make the install program see the drive?
