Software :: Firefox Not Starting After Update
May 15, 2010
I updated my Suse 11.1 distribution and suddenly Firefox stopped working. I went to a terminal and typed in "firefox" and nothing happened. No error message, no nothing. It just stood there.
If I did the sae as root or as another user, then Firefox would load as usual.
The issue for me was that I was using NoMachine (NX) to access my machine. It adds some lines to the LD_PRELOAD session variable. I removed the variable content et voila! I've got my Firefox working again
To check if you're in the same potential situation, do a "set | grep LD" and check the result. If you've got "LD_PRELOAD=" with nothing afterwards, you're not in the same case as me. Good luck finding our fix. If you see "LD_PRELOAD=some stuff here" then you may be in the same case as me. The type in "LD_PRELOAD=" and hit enter to clean he variable. Then in the same terminal type in "firefox" and it should just work.

I've set up a second user for myself on my laptop.
My user on the laptop is 'tiger'
Let's call the second user 'jrdobbs'
I would like to log on to gmail/facebook/etc using the jrdobbs, but I don't want to switch users via X... I just want a second instance of firefox open, which stores all of its login information under /home/jrdobbs.
My naive attempt looked like this:
Code:
su -l -c "firefox" jrdobbs
Here was my thinking:
start firefox under 'su jrdobbs' ... firefox should store its files under the current user's $HOME/.mozilla
[Code].....

the start up fails, but a process is left running. these machines are running the latest stable version of Centos 5, and we have been "messing" with the firewall. When I'm logged on through a console, I get error messages that lockd can not contact the server even though the nfs mounted home directories work fine.

Recently I have installed Fedora 10. It comes with firefox 3.xx by default. Now I was wondering if there is any way through which i can update it to 3.5 version though yum. I have tried yum update firefox but it did not work and returns following messages Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit Setting up Update Process No Packages marked for Update I know that one way to update is download the latest Tar package and use it, but I want to totally remove my previous installation and use solely one package i.e. firefox 3.5.

Using Ubuntu 8.04, Thunderbird 2.0.0.24, Firefox 3.6.12. Sometimes they start Maximized but sometimes Unmaximized (not Minimized). Can't find a pattern and can't find a setting. Also, can Thunderbird be set to start with the 'Inbox' selected?

I want to launch Firefox at a different time every day, and send it to a landmarked page, not my home page.
Is there a relatively simple way to automate this?

I have a problem, I'm have a course at high school (webserver management) in class this morning we had to install apache, php, ftp and so on but I didn't finish on time so when I got home I was playing around. I'm on wireless here and changed the vm connection from bridge to nat.
normally we had to install apache using yum (yum install httpd) and start the service. that's what I did and then we had to go to firefox (or IE) and type the ip of our server. but when I do I get "problem loading page" instead of the apache default page. I've set httpd runlever 2 to 5 to on and rebooted. but still not working.

A while ago, I removed the Ubuntu One entry from my Startup Applications because it was annoying having to activate the keyring every time I booted up/logged on. Now, I am prompted for a password once I start Firefox (mind that it's only the first time I run Firefox after boot/login). I'm assuming it's Ubuntu One because of the sequence of events, but feel free to correct me if you think otherwise. How can I stop this?
Running standard Ubuntu 10.04.

How can I make the security applet stop showing an update for firefox 3.5.9? I have a more recent version installed from mozilla repo: firefox 3.6. The mozilla repo already has a higher priority (95 instead of 99), so I don't know what to do.

I updated my fc12 x86_64 server today, and one of the updated included kernel 2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.x86_64 from the previous one of kernel-2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64.When I boot with that kernel, it stops when my logical volumes that are built on a raid 5 array (linux software raid built using mdadm) are not there.I can start them afterward with mdadm --auto-detect which seemingly loads the appropriate modules and starts the array, but I have never had to do this before.
Reading the mdadm man page, it mentions that this is generally done by the initrd. So, I am guessing the initrd that came with the new kernel is missing something.

After doing a regular software update on a 5.5 box (and rebooting), I now have problems starting xen (version "xen-3.0.3-105.el5_5.3.x86_64").
Running "/etc/init.d/xend start" yields no output, and checking the script, I see that the script halts if "/proc/xen" doesn't exist.
Checking the filesystem, I find that the "/proc/xen" entry is indeed gone. Restarting the CentOS box does not help.
Should I reinstall Xen? If so, should I remove any portions of Xen before I do?
Update:
When I run /usr/sbin/xend I get:

Just used Synaptic to update my video driver for the XFX RADEON R250x. It was working before when I had installed the drivers from the AMD site. But I was told I needed to use the kernel compatible, so I did this update. Now it boots up and hangs with blank screen where it would usually go to login. I've got a boot disc where I can boot into and we can look at the logs ....

I loaded the Pre-Release version of Ubuntu 10.10.1 32 bit workstation. It ran mostly fine for about a 2 months. Then I did an online update and it told me that I had to reboot. When I did, I booted to a splash screen and then a dead machine with a black screen where control-alt-delete does nothing, no disk activity, no mouse, no keyboard, totally dead. Had to hit reset button. I booted to a suse partition and hacked the grub entry to remove the splash and silent to get more spew at boot time. The last thing before the screen goes black is starting NBD client. I have my email and various directories on my central server so I need NFS. Is there a way I can hack my way to get it to boot even without NFS temporarily to possibly rebuild the nbd kernel module? I have looked at the /var/log/ syslog, daemon, debug, kern messages and gdm log files and don't see any indication of why it crashed. Where else can I look?

I usually run my updates every Friday, my last good update was 4-Mar-2011. I could not update this week and got an error -"PackageKit Error repo-not-available: File '/repodata/repomd.xml' not found on medium http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:/Tumbleweed:/Raw/openSUSE_Tumbleweed_standard/'"I get a similar error message when starting Yast Software Management. Is this related to the 11.4 release? I'm waiting for fewer bugs before I upgrade to 11.4, so I'd like to be able to keep current with 11.3.
