If you have a stages boost library(still not installed) please specify $boost_root in your envireonment and do not give a PATH to --with-bost option. IF you are sure you have boost installed, then check 7youe version number looking in<boost/version.hpp>"

Trying to install e4rat that was on LifeHacker on Friday and have zero idea what I am doing. I have the e4rat extracted to a directory in /usr/local/src The README says that there are dependencies including boost library components. I am fine installing the whole boost library but sudo apt-get install libboost* did not work.
[Code]...
I tried to bang around a little to try to learn something with this but can't get any further.

I'm trying to cross compile something and it requires a recent version of Boost. I'm using squeeze and gnome and my updates are all up to date. I could not get through the 'configure' stage with Boost dev packages from the debian repository, so I went to the Boost web site. I thought the package requires boost 1.44 or later, so I downloaded 1.45.0 from the site and proceeded to build and install it. I think I installed it right, using /usr/local/ as the prefix. Back at my main project, I try to configure my build and I get some of the following text and then the configure stops.
Code:
checking for Boost's header version... 1_45
checking for the toolset name used by Boost for arm-none-linux-gnueabi-g++... configure: WARNING: could not figure out which toolset name to use for arm-none-linux-gnueabi-g++
checking boost/date_time/posix_time/posix_time.hpp usability... yes
[code]....
I cannot get past the 'date_time' thing. Does anyone know what is meant by 'flags to link with Boost date_time' ?

It seems the file libdb does exist. man dbopen displays man page for dbopen. I also tried to ln -s /usr/lib/libdb.a and libdb.so /lib dir but all were in vain.

I'm trying to install the latest debug flashplayer available here:
[URL]
linked from this page
[URL]
I follow the embedded instructions and this is the error:
root@vostro-ubuntu:~# /home/berrie/work/download/install_flash_player_10_linux/flashplayer-installer
[: 258: closing paren expected
ERROR: Your glibc library is older than 2.3.

I'm running Ubuntu Karmic Koala and it is up to date.
Could it be that the flash installer parses the version number wrong as previously it was glibc-2.9-1, a '9' after the dot, now there is a '1'.

configure: error: readline library not found If you have readline already installed, see config.log for details on the failure. It is possible the compiler isn't looking in the proper directory. Use --without-readline to disable readline support. Now I tried to yum install readline-devel and the result was failure as below:
Quote:
[root@localhost ~]# yum install readline-devel-6.0-3.fc12.i686.rpm
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
[code]....
So I am thinking that maybe I have to tell configure where my readline libraries are. From the above, it looks like readline-6.0 is not on my computer, even though I went through the configure/build/install process for it.

I'm using Fedora9. I cannot start wireshark or tcpdump because of the lib dependency error:
Code:
[root@localhost ~]# wireshark
wireshark: error while loading shared libraries: libpcap.so.0.9: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I updated libpcap before and the latest version is libpcap.so.1.1. I changed the version because of another application but I cannot remember when I did it, perhaps on Sep.11?
Code:
[root@localhost lib]# ll |grep libpcap
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 309670 2010-09-11 08:10 libpcap.a
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 12 2010-09-11 08:10 libpcap.so -> libpcap.so.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 14 2010-09-11 08:10 libpcap.so.1 -> libpcap.so.1.1
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 243207 2010-09-11 08:10 libpcap.so.1.1
So I tried
Code:
ln -s libpcap.so.1.1 libpcap.so.0.9
but it doesn't work.

I have a .swf file that I was going to play, but when I try to open it, totem (which apparently is my .swf program) says "GStreamer encountered a general supporting library error." Now since I know a little bit about linux, I opened up a terminal and redirected the stderr and stdout to a file called "error". Then I read the file and it said:
** Message: Error: GStreamer encountered a general supporting library error.
gstffmpegdemux.c(1243): gst_ffmpegdemux_open (): /GstPlayBin2lay/GstURIDecodeBin:uridecodebin0/GstDecodeBin2:decodebin20/ffdemux_swf:ffdemux_swf0:
Input/output error
So then I interpreted that as meaning that there was a library called "gstffmpegdemux.c" that needed replacing. So I tried using synaptic to replace. Then Synaptic wouldn't let me get the package, Though I could see it existed (I would put up a screenshot, but for some reason it won't let me upload) then I tried aptitude, which claims it doesn't exist, and then apt-get which also claims that it doesn't exist.

I find this confusing as I have installed libmirage - http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdem...r.bz2/download - and I have found libmirage.so.2 in /usr/local/lib.

I'm running Slack 13.1 64 bit. I'd like to try running multi for 32 bit support so I can run a 32 bit version of firefox using the 32 bit flash plugin. Here's what I did: - followed Alien Bob's Wiki and download and installed all the *txz files. - installed a bunch of required libraries following the instructions on the Wiki - installed the 32 bit 10.1 version of the flash player plugin in $HOME/.mozilla/plugins/ - started the 32 bit 3.6.3 version of firefox; it seems to work fine. - go to about plugins and verify that Shockwave Flash (libflashplayer.so) is version 10.1 r53 and it is enabled. - run "ldd libflashplayer.so" and verified that all libraries are found. - run "ldd /usr/lib/firefox-3.6.3/firefox-bin" and verified all libraries are found. - go to [URL]... and click on "test your adobe flash player installation" I will get this error: Adobe Flash Player error: could not load cURL library - I verified (repeatedly) that I do have what I think is the correct package. How can I fix (or start debugging) this error?

I'm reading about shared, static, and dynamic libraries. What is SDL? Is it static, shared, or dynamic?
I always thought a library would be a lot of .h and .cpp files compiled separately into .o files and then if you compiled your own program you could use the -l parameter to link the library and it was all compiled together. Now I'm not so sure.
I don't even see any SDL .cpp files in my system anywhere. All I have are lots of SDL .h files in /usr/include/SDL and I don't really understand the code in them.
I'm making a wild guess here: SDL is a shared library. SDL itself is NOT compiled into my program, therefore SDL must be on any system my program tries to run on. When I compile and link SDL all it needs is the header files to know what SDL function and objects it can use. And then on every system it uses an already compiled SDL shared library thingy somewhere.
So... where is that part of SDL? All I can find are header files.
I'm thinking the advantage of shared libraries is that someone could say update SDL on their own system and take advantage of the new features without having to download new executables with the new version of SDL compiled into them for every program that uses SDL.
So if I'm making an editor and a game engine and they both use a lot of the same .cpp and .h files that I wrote and I'm tired of updating one and then the other and I need to turn them into a library, then a shared library might be kind of a silly solution. I could just make a static library. Right? Because it's not SDL. Nobody else is ever going to use this library.

I'm trying to change to a subdirectory:
Code:
tony@advent:~/scratch$ cd Home-Arch
bash: cd: Home-Arch: No such file or directory
So I list the contents of the current directory:
Code:
tony@advent:~/scratch$ ls
duhome Home-Arch qcad_1.dxf qcad_1.svg runme stdout
OK, I assume I have mis-typed the subdirectory name in ways I cannot detect, so I copy the sub-directory name from the output of the 'ls' command, while within the terminal window, and paste it into the next 'cd' command:
Code:
tony@advent:~/scratch$ cd Home-Arch
bash: cd: Home-Arch: No such file or directory
I browse the directory and sub-directory in Nautlius - everything is there where I expect it to be. The folders/files are not hidden. What is happening here?
