Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Write Videos Into DVD From Pixela Image Utility
Jan 26, 2010
I've got a Canon Full HD video camera which records in .mts file format which is in H.264 codec. However I can't write my videos into DVD from the Pixela image utility which is the default bundle software distributed with the camera. I'm trying to find a way to convert my mts files into DVD formats (such as .vob or .mpg). Does anybody know about a software I can use in Ubuntu.

I'm trying to play an mp4 video (movie) with my VLC media player but the image is very sequential (it keeps interrupting). I don't know why... I've even tried to play with some other players but I have the same problem.

I just got a 2TB drive with the intention of backing up multiple Ubuntu machines to it. What would be the best way to do this, keeping ease of restoration in mind? Should I just copy each drive image to the BU drive, or use a utility like Back in Time?

I run the following command for disk duplicating from one source to 5 destination harddisk.
dc3dd progress=on conv=sync,noerror iflag=direct bs=262144 hash=md5 log=sda_log.txt if=/dev/sda | tee >(dc3dd of=/dev/sdb) >(dc3dd of=/dev/sdc) >(dc3dd of=/dev/sdd) >(dc3dd of=/dev/sde) | dc3dd of=/dev/sdf
When I run the command in shell prompt it is working fine. But I want to write a shell script for this task. When I wrote and run the shell script it gives the error message syntax error near unexpected token.

Is there a driver or utility to mount an iso image over http or https? There is a httpDisk driver for windows but I can't find anything similar for Linux.
There may be a way of using curl/wget but not sure if this is possible.

Something very handy to do in a Linux shell, is manipulating files and strings - essentially parsing data. Write a utility which will scan in a text file and search and replace strings. We also want to keep track of how many strings we've replaced.
I know that my command would look like this: <utility name> <filename> <stringToSearchFor> <stringToReplaceWith>
Code: #!/bin/bash
[code]....

Is anyone aware of a way (or a program I can use) to write to an existing ISO image? To set the scene I've used APTonCD to create an ISO with all the programs on I want so that the next time I install Linux Mint (or Ubuntu) I can just put in the CD & install a lot of programs in one go with Package Manager. Thats worked fine & I have the ISO ready for CD but I would like a way to change it a bit so that I can add some of my own custom setup scripts (stuff to set up user accounts & so on) then every thing I need is all on one CD / DVD

Using webcam component of XawTV package as supplied with Ubuntu 10.10. My implementation seems pretty basic, just needs to snap every 5 seconds and ftp to web site. It actually works just fine, but only for an hour or so. Then process continues to run, but image does not update. Kill & restart webcam and it works fine again, until it doesn't. Video stream in XawTV window is fine throughout, so I don't think there's a hardware problem.

OS: Windows XP
Virtual Machine: Bochs-2.4.5
I want to learn some details about linux booting, so I begin writing a small boot program myself. Yesterday, I was writing a small boot program and planned to use it boot a Bochs virtual machine. The boot program is written in assembly language and compiled with nasm.I use bxiamge.exe in Bochs and create an floppy image called boot.img and configure the Bochs virtual host to boot from this floppy image. My question is how to write the compiled boot.bin program into the floppy image(boot.img)?

The Project is for writing a generic program which extracts list of applications that is running on Unix, and for each application, determine if it has a corresponding graphical UI interface, is so, the program should be able to grab the UI into a image bitmap. The program should be able to run in any Unix UI framework, such as CDE, KDE, X, Motif, et al.

I am looking for a utility that will allow me to add required metadata to my songs after importing from CD or whatever. I do not want something that will find the information online. I want to have total control over that including the ability to do global changes on songs as well as one by one changes.
Right now I am trying out Kid3-qt and Ex Falso but don't quite know if I am using them properly.
I also tried Sound Juicer but I am not sure if it is really tagging properly when importing audio CD's.
Any other recommendations, and/or videos on how to use these utilities?

On my Windoze machine, I use Replay Media Catcher 4 which runs silently in the background and captures any videos (FLV, AVI, MPG, WMV, etc) on any websites that I happen to go to, and saves them to a folder on my hard drive. Right now, if I want to save a video that I'm wathing from Ubuntu, I have to go to /temp, guess which file it is, and copy it after it downloads fully but before it finishes playing, otherwise Firefox deletes it from /temp right away. This is a pain.
Yes, there are screen motion capture utilities in the Ubuntu Software Center, but they're just screen scrapers that result in low quality copies without any audio. I want something that will actually capture the video stream and save it as a file. Even if it doesn't save all videos automatically like RMC4, and I have to right click on the video to Save As, that would be better than copying it from /temp at the precise exact moment.

I have a couple of large-format printers (Epson R2400, HP 9650) which I only use infrequently. If they are not used very often, they dry out, the print heads get packed up, it's an expensive mess to deal with when times comes to run off some prints. The printers are physically connected to a Windows machine to which my Ubuntu computer is networked. It would be helpful if there was a utility that could initiate a test page print job on the machines, which could be scheduled to run once a week or so. I've had no luck finding such a thing for Windows

Does anybody know what has happened to Kino - the video capture utility? Used to be packaged by packman for Opensuse but doesn't seem to be available for 11.2.
Is there an alternative I can use for video capture - or has packman just not gotten around to adding this yet?

My wife is taking an online language course that requires Windows in order to record and playback speech (for pronunciation training). I decided the easiest thing to do would be to clone a VM I use on my machine for tasks that can only be accomplished in a Windows environment. I did so, and successfully installed the speech recognition utility on the Windows guest VM. Unfortunately, although the microphone works just fine--I can hear my voice in the headphones--no sound is recorded by the speech recognition utility. Just to be clear, the microphone is fully functional under GNU/Linux. My wife has been using Skype without any issues at all. That is, Skype used to work. Somewhere during the course of trying to resolve the voice recording problem I managed to break Skype. I have no idea how.
It's a long story, but I'll try to be as brief as possible. When I could not get the VM solution to work properly, I thought maybe the problem was with the VM, so I checked the original copy on my own machine. No problem there. Windows sees and hears the microphone just fine (using the testing utility under sound configuration). So how is it possible that the microphone doesn't work in the cloned VM image? Before you stop me, allow me to note that both machines have identical motherboards, and both are configured to use the onboard sound. Sound works on the Linux host and the Windows guest VM. Both sound and microphone work in the original VM image on my machine, but only sound works in the cloned VM on my wife's machine.
If you've followed me down the rabbit hole this far, please continue with me a bit further as things get stranger and stranger. After triple checking all the setting in KMix (I'm running Squeeze/KDE on both machines) to be sure they were identical, I noted that I was unable to view/add/enable the "channel" option on my wife's machine. Why, I have no idea. As I said, the machines are identical as can be both regarding hardware and software. Out of desperation, I decided to set up an account for my wife on my machine. I created her account, made sure she had the necessary audio permissions, then cloned my VM to her account. Same problem.
I would love for someone to point out what I'm missing here. Same hardware, identical VM (clone), same permissions, same sound configurations in KMix and under the Windows guest VM. How is it possible for the microphone to work for me, but not for my wife? Is there some mystery configuration file somewhere that has magically been altered for her account alone? The worst part about this entire process is that I've broken my wife's Skype, which is a big deal seeing as we live in a tiny country in the heart of Africa and cell phone communications are very expensive.

I cannot get AVI videos to play with the Totem movie player that comes bundled with Ubuntu 8.04 on the Dell Mini 9. I keep getting: "Could not determine type of stream." Randomly, one or two of the dozen or so videos on my SD card will work, but most will not. This is very frustrating because all the videos I download are always in AVI format.
I tried used the synaptic package manager find an alternative player and tried MPlayer, but that didn't do anything. I'd just get a blank screen on everything. Using the tutorial in this forum, I got GNOME Mplayer, which also didn't work, but even a video that worked with Totem would only play audio with GNOME Mplayer.
I looked in the repository for video codec updates but didn't see any. What do I do? Is there like a Winamp for Linux? This is a total bummer. I just want to play AVI files that are so commonly used for video.

I'm trying to find a program where I can edit some hd mkv files. I want to cut pieces of them out and put them together. I was using avidemux but when I went to save it again it said I needed the start point to be a keyframe. It allowed me to save it as an avi, but the color was distorted. I am fine with using avidemux if I can get around this keyframe problem.

I have used ubuntu for a long time but always using either a live CD or my Flash stick.
On past Thursday i decided to install ubuntu on my laptop and i did it . It is light and healthy (ha ha). Any way, I would like to play AVI, MKV, RMVB, and MP4 videos but i couldn't. I tried a lot of debian packages and drives (i.e. files with .deb extension) but no result except installing RealPlay that i am using it to play mp3 files only.
can you give me some packages to play those files. (I can't connect my laptop to Internet for the time being). In addition, I have Huawei E1750 USB Modem but the system does not recogize it. Is there any way to play those videos and surf the net using the modem in UBUNTU 10.04 LTS.
