I use vi as the default text editor and one day I pressed a wrong combination of keys on my box while programming in c on vi and the character 'i' got highlighted with a brown box over it. At each and every position in file, not only this even in new files it appears to b highlighted. What should I do to avoid it.

On logging in I get a brown screen for a few seconds - have done following as on web but to no avail. Xubuntu 11.04
[URL] initial info does not work, and mods further down page also do not solve problem.
I have even commented out all , still comes up brown.
I just installed Xubuntu 11.04 and all of a sudden I got a brown screen when I logged in that made my desktop unvisible (everything else worked fine). After a while I understood it was a problem with nautilus which I installed because I thought I needed to for Dropbox. So this is what I did and it worked:

I'm a recent convert from Ubuntu but of all the things I thought I could get used to, a different colour scheme is not one of them. Does anybody know of a way to import the brown colour scheme from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS into Debian Squeeze? I've tried configuring it as best I can by configuring the Clearlooks theme, but to get the brown panels/menus/titlebars with white writing that doesn't make all other writing white also must mean editing some config file(s).
Can I just copy whatever these files are from Ubuntu to Debian? I don't need the whole "titlebar buttons the left" caper, but the colours... I find easier on my eyes, particularly the dark brown panels, etc, since they're always staring at me and it's less of an eye strain to have a light colour "in my face" most of the time. Changing to a dark colour scheme everywhere is more trouble than it's worth, which is why I liked this theme in Ubuntu. It was dark where it needed to be but light where most apps/etc assume black fonts, dark blue hyperlinks, etc.
I had to unplug the computer by the power cord and when I boot up I see a distorted brown brick like screen after the login and before the loading screen. It's happened before and it went away over time.

Ubuntu Unity Netbook Edition, the desktop just turns into a plain brown screen with nothing on it -- no icons, nothing. This is the /etc/vimrc that came on the system. anyone see a bug or a reason it would do that?

When browsing around with the terminal, I have noticed that some folder are highlighted against a dark background, and some are not. What does it mean if it is highlighted?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI was messing around with the alternate character panel app and made a custom character set. I then wanted to put it on a new panel and created a new panel. I moved the character set to that panel, and then started to mess around with the panel settings (auto hide, show hide buttons, and expand, to be specific.) So far so good, until I moved the panel from the right side of the screen to the top. I already had a panel here, and it seemed not to like hiding a panel when there was already one on the top.
When the new panel hid itself, all my panels stopped responding (any clicks on them did nothing) and my processor started going at 100%. I tried a reboot and the only thing that changed is that now I can't even see my panels. I'm guessing I need to change the settings back manually through the prompt, but I don't know how to do that. I am using 10.04 and have not upgraded gnome since upgrading to 10.04.
So I gave the following permission using sudo su to some directories:
sudo a+x -R ~/<SOME FOLDER>/*
sudo a+w -R ~/<SOME FOLDER>/*
After doing this, I can access write and read all directories but my terminal shows these folders highlighted and I really dont like this. Is there any way they can look like before (with no highlights)?
I am using Ubuntu 9.04. In Google Chrome (7.0.517.41 beta), Firefox (3.6.11) and Opera (10.63), links are not highlighting properly after clicking them. Either there is no difference, or they are so similar in colour as to be almost indistinguishable (dark blue and slightly darker blue).

I am having issues getting a 32-bit environment to run something on my computer. Most people think this is a lame game, but I rather enjoy it and would like to continue playing it on this computer. I am running F11 x86_64 on an AMD Athlon 64 x2 6000+ Black Edition (OC'd at 3.4 in case anyone is wondering). I TRIED running yum to get the shared library referenced in the following message, but it gave conflicts on installation. Is there a way around this, such as installing a separate environment directory for just this game? Or is it just a lost cause?

I have two computers running Ubuntu Gnome with Firefox. Upgrades yesterday (18 February 2010) at about 1430 MDT hours (UTC 2130 hours) broke Firefox on both machines. Firefox is present in the menu, and in /usr/bin/firefox, but it will not launch, not even from the command line. I have tried "sudo apt-get remove firefox" followed by "sudo apt-get install firefox" but the problem persists. When attempting to launch firefox, it does give me a tiny brown spot at the upper-left side of the screen. This can be expanded by dragging so that it is a full screen, labeled "Firefox" but there is no content in the screen...only blank space.

I took my current solution from the script at but this will open open a gvim window for each colorscheme I want to process. So far, the only way I have found to avoid the annoying new windows that pop up every second is to start a VNCserver and set the DISPLAY environment variable to that of the VNCserver so that all gvim windows are sent to the display within the VNC session.However, I would like to know if there is a way I can avoid the whole VNC setup and just run a headless gvim instance that does the conversion and exits, with no windows ever being actually displayed.

In programming and various terminal programs (Screen, Vim) the [, ], { and } tends to be used a lot. I'm using a Norwegian keyboard where these are placed such that I have to stretch my fingers a bit too long for whats comfortable. To make it easier I though I'd try to make alt+[some key] be one of these characters.
