I had to unplug the computer by the power cord and when I boot up I see a distorted brown brick like screen after the login and before the loading screen. It's happened before and it went away over time.

I just installed Xubuntu 11.04 and all of a sudden I got a brown screen when I logged in that made my desktop unvisible (everything else worked fine). After a while I understood it was a problem with nautilus which I installed because I thought I needed to for Dropbox. So this is what I did and it worked:

anyways, i have an older system i got from my school with 300 some mb ram and a maxtor 20 gig hd. it was formatted and i had ubuntu 8.10 installed on it (i don't have 10.04 yet). everything installed fine, but when i start it up, i can log in and everything, but instead of loading a desktop, it shows a brown screen.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have two computers running Ubuntu Gnome with Firefox. Upgrades yesterday (18 February 2010) at about 1430 MDT hours (UTC 2130 hours) broke Firefox on both machines. Firefox is present in the menu, and in /usr/bin/firefox, but it will not launch, not even from the command line. I have tried "sudo apt-get remove firefox" followed by "sudo apt-get install firefox" but the problem persists. When attempting to launch firefox, it does give me a tiny brown spot at the upper-left side of the screen. This can be expanded by dragging so that it is a full screen, labeled "Firefox" but there is no content in the screen...only blank space.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running latest fc11. the startup sound (desktop-login.ogg) always plays distorted. it plays a chord or two, slight pause, plays another chord, etc.. skips about as much as it plays. i found if i run canberra-gtk-play with the ogg file from a terminal, it plays fine. i changed it to play /usr/share/sounds/startup3.wav, but it also plays distorted during startup. plays fine from a terminal or thru natilus. i have installed the pulse-audio through the "perfect" guide.
View 4 Replies View Relatedi wasn't sure where to post this, so if there's a better place, someone please more this thread. i just installed 10.04 64-bit desktop on a ~4 year old hp a1610n (pic below). it works great for about 20 seconds at which point the screen becomes distorted and unresponsive. i'm not entirely sure, but i think the problem didn't start until after i activated the (recommended) nvidia driver. its hard to say though since i set up that driver very soon after the install. here's a pic of the desktop: click me

I recently got a new laptop (Aspire 5741) and have installed ubuntu 10.4 on it. I have been very happy with the computer and OS. However the only problem I have had is that I am unable to change the screen brightness. Last night I though I found a fix. I cant remember the specific thing but it was something similar to this [URL]. On reboot the ubuntu logo came up and a few seconds later it showed a distorted ubuntu logo. After this it just goes to a black screen. I have tried booting into recovery fail proof graphics mode, and the problem still arises.

So I tried to install from the DVD. This time the graphical of the installation worked perfectly. So i installed KDE. (the .iso is perfect, i used the md5) Everything normal until the Login screen, again is totally distorted, and can observe only the mouse. But I could log in normally just typing the password and pressing enter, it made ​​the normal sound of suse opening the session, but remained totally distorted the image.

After upgrading the kernel and restarted, I've been having an issue with the screen. After logged in through GDM, the screen starts distorting, creating small colorful object and blurry

However, this problem does not exist on tty other than used by desktop ( tty1...tty6 is not affected ) And not in GDM too!!! My GDM shows up nicely, I let it there for hours and no distortion, no strange colors whatsoever.
KMS is enabled ( by default ) as I checked :

Graphics is getting distorted whenever I move windows along the screen. This happened soon after I installed KDE desktop and compiz fusion on my pc. I am having 1GB ATI MOBILITY RADEON HD 54 graphics card (Seems like that was the problem). The first fix that I tried: Installed qt-devel compat-libstdc++-33 and then created an xorg.conf file by installing system-config-display and edited the file to include radeon under drivers then restarted --> this didnt work Compiled ATI drivers for linux ---> this also dint work However, I can view the o/p clearly when I type glxgears Seems like the issue is with this. But I donno how to change this

When I run the above command, the o/p includes direct rendering: yes" and also various OpenGL information concerning for "Mesa" but not for "ATI Technologies" I am facing this issue on KDE as well as Gnome.. In KDE, if I check activate Desktop graphics then I would get automatically logged out. In gnome if I select "Desktop Effects" then I get a message "3D acceleration not supported".
I just installed Debian (lenny) on my HP 2133 Mini-Note (KX869AT). I've managed to get everything working, even the Broadcom wireless adapter, but the display is too large for the actual screen size. To get the screen to a more manageable resolution, I did copy the xorg.conf file of another HP 2133 Mini-Note user. (It was probably a different model; there are several versions of the HP 2133, hence the model number in the description.) Icons and things hide off-screen. The text on the GNOME panel is quite large.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.
The problem come after i kill the Xorg using the kill command,and the screen turns to black without anything so that i can do nothing. The problem goes on after reboot
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed VirtualBox and setup a Windows Vista host, initially with a .vdi of 10gb. That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:

I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:

/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%
So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?
I have a desktop running Hardy and till friday it was running good. Today is monday and I guess it has got monday blues like I get every monday at work.Today I tried to start it as usual but it just refused to go further than login screen. I just can not login. It just hangs it there. I do not know what has gone wrong. I did not change anything since friday and no one else uses it. Theres nothing in logs that could give any idea. It just hangs without any reason and is still on the login screen for ever. It does ask my username and password but then it does not go further.But to my surprise I tried logging in with root and it gave me expected error that system administrator is not allowed to login from gnome.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu, I have shrunk on of my partitions in Windows and now have an "unallocated" 25Gb partition which I wish to install Ubuntu onto.I have used unetbootin to put Ubuntu onto a USB stick and can boot it and get to the Install screen no probs! I am having trouble allocating partitions though.I get to the point where I need to partition my free space (Page 2 of tutorial), and select "Specify Partitions Manually (Advanced)".
I then go to the next step and I get the "Allocate Drive Space" screen. I am told that I have "free space - 26844Mb", I have selected this, and pressed the Add button, then go to the next screen, and set up the /boot partition as described in the tutorial. This works ok.When I go back to the "Allocate drive space" screen, I am told that the space is now "unusable" and has a size of 26344Mb.I cannot get any further than this as it will not let me do anything except "revert"?
I'm a recent convert from Ubuntu but of all the things I thought I could get used to, a different colour scheme is not one of them. Does anybody know of a way to import the brown colour scheme from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS into Debian Squeeze? I've tried configuring it as best I can by configuring the Clearlooks theme, but to get the brown panels/menus/titlebars with white writing that doesn't make all other writing white also must mean editing some config file(s).
Can I just copy whatever these files are from Ubuntu to Debian? I don't need the whole "titlebar buttons the left" caper, but the colours... I find easier on my eyes, particularly the dark brown panels, etc, since they're always staring at me and it's less of an eye strain to have a light colour "in my face" most of the time. Changing to a dark colour scheme everywhere is more trouble than it's worth, which is why I liked this theme in Ubuntu. It was dark where it needed to be but light where most apps/etc assume black fonts, dark blue hyperlinks, etc.
I use vi as the default text editor and one day I pressed a wrong combination of keys on my box while programming in c on vi and the character 'i' got highlighted with a brown box over it. At each and every position in file, not only this even in new files it appears to b highlighted. What should I do to avoid it.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have used Ubuntu since 7-4; I now have 10.4. However, in the last week I have been taken to the login screen three times. This could be potentially calamitous. Ctrl+Alt +Backspace have by default been disable since 9-4. There is no way I am pressing atl+Prtscr +K. I wonder if there is a new zap command in 10.4, and if so, how to disable it. I have never found the need to go back back to the login window. I am generally using the command line when doing this.

Selected my user log in, entered my password, and after a couple seconds I briefly see what looks to be the console and am returned to the login splash screen... I can Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get to the console and log in... but that is as far as I can get. This is the case for Gnome, Remix, and Remix 2D.
I can sudo apt-get (update, upgrade, etc) as well. It is the right password because if I type in a wrong one it presents an authentication failure dialog box.
How can I fix my log in screen and get to my desktop? I am Currently running 10.04.... waiting to get 10.10
yesterday i installed slim login manager on my computer (eee pc 1018p, ubuntu 11.04), and now it cannot get passed the ubuntu loading screen (with orange dots underneath) when booting. i tried booting into recovery mode and that didn't work either. i also left the computer trying to boot overnight and that didn't work.
basically, during this loading screen that should eventually bring you to the login screen, i can alt+tab to see the progress of the load. the progress is stuck on

I just bought this desktop from my friend and it runs win 7 and ubuntu 10.04. it worked very well the first two days until I changed the hostname of the system.
I did like: hostname myNewName
And everything worked fine. The problem now is when I start ubuntu and and reach username and password screen , I enter my password to login the screen becomes black and return me again to the screen where I put my password again. If I entered wrong password , the system message stating wrong password. On the other hand, when I try to run ubuntu from live-cd I can login easily and access my account.
My friend told me he removed Naultius package and reinstall it for some reason before he gave it to me. Note windows 7 is working properly.
I have just did an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. I am planning to go to 10.04 . After the upgrade everything was ok but I noticed the GRUB was still legacy. So I updated my GRUB to GRUB2. Now when I boot, after entering my logon-id and password, it just brings me back to the login-id screen (to logon on). Any indication of what is wrong and how I should fix this ?
I have no encryptions. [added comments] Currently reading thread about login loop bug with 9.10 Followed instructions about possible missing pre-release update but even if it did do updates, I am still login screen looping. Doing additional researches until someone answers with the fix.

When I try to login with my username, the one I created when I installed the OS, it seems to try to login but almost immediately kicks back to the login screen. No authentication error it just seems to just logout? The only change I made since last successful login was to add ". .alias" to the .profile file - the only entries in the .alias file are comments and "alias" commands. I have one other username but it is not in the sudo's list of users so I can not change anything in the master login.

I don't understand why first time firstboot start the system will auto loging in but not complete yet and then my script is start and it's work does not fine I think that is another user is already login , but if I re run my firstboot again and again (by setting something that can revoke my firstboot and restart) it's work before auto login and every things is ok!
Are there stylesheet differnces in fedora/mac/linux. For example in Mac or Windows my website which contains a grid [URL]... shows better grid colors yellow white brown etc. In Linux/Fedora it's pure white which kinda looks ugly. Is fedora missing something?
