Server :: Webmin Hangs / Freezes After Config Change
May 11, 2010
I've changed the login configuration of Webmin in a way that it will block hosts for 1200 seconds after 8 failed login attempts and since then I can't login to Webmin anymore. I've tried stopping and starting Webmin via SSH, waiting a few hours before trying again, flushing the iptables configuration but all with no luck.
I try to access my mysql in webmin but i cant see it in Servers submenu. My mysql is already started.I can search the mysql in webmin search bar.I just want the mysql be place under Servers submenu..
I am trying to install webmin on my Debian virtual machine and it is not working.
Here is what i am following [url]
I ad the 2 lines to /etc/apt/sources.list I ad the key ok But when i do apt-get install webmin it goes through everything ok as far as i can see, except when it gets to " **initializing cache. This may take a while **Setting up webmin (1.550) ... " It is like it just stops doing anything, it just hangs there.
If i reboot and try "dpkg --configure -a" it starts at the same place "Setting up webmin" but nothing is happening.
I'm running Ubuntu Server 11.04 with OpenSSH, trying to create an ssh tunnel (for web traffic) to it from my (also Ubuntu) laptop. This is the command I'm using to create the tunnel:
Code: ssh -ND localhost:8080 george@192.168.1.20 I had it all working on a virtual machine.. which was deleted What settings/lines do I need to change/add from the default OpenSSH config files to get tunnelling to work? I've Googled and AllowTcpForwarding is set to yes, as is X11Forwarding.. but it still doesn't work. Chrome can connect to the server, but says the connection was closed before any data was sent.
I have had webmin running previously but i just recently installed Unbuntu server and i am now trying to install webmin. after typing this to install webmin sudo apt-get install webmin it started doing its thing and then it halts.
Giving me the following message: "Package webmin is not available, but is referred to by another package. this may mean that the package is missing, had been obsoleted , or is only available from another source."
The first thing i did after installing webmin was edit the sources.list
Then i tpyed sudo nano sources.list I uncommented everything with "deb" in front of it
I also uncommented
deb cdrom:
I then typed this sudo wget [url]
After getting that i typed this apt-get install perl libnet-ssleay-perl openssl libauthen-pam-perl libpam-runtime libio-pty-perl libmd5-perl
I encountered a a dependency issue when trying to install Webmin on Ubuntu Server Edition 10.04 Beta1.
When you try to install webmin, libmd5-perl is not available in any of the lucid repositories:
I resolved the dependency prob by adding the following repository to my /etc/apt/sources.list: deb [url]
Then I did a sudo apt-get update then sudo apt-get install and libmd5-perl installed fine along with webadmin. BTW. I got a GPG error when doing a apt=get update because I did not import the public key for the debian repos I used to get libdm5-perl, which doesn't matter to me as I commented out the repos once I got libmd5-perl installed.
I want to configure a VPN over the Internet.I installed the 'openvpn' package, generated the key file, transfered it by a secure way to the client, and setted up the configuration file.
So, in that configuration file I input the IP addresses of the tunneled interfaces. Both IPs are static in the tunnel.
Then, I've heard somewhere that I can assign a dynamic configuration IP for the client. I do this registering a range.
Well, when I tried to change static IP to dynamic IP (changing '192.168.0.2' to '192.168.0.0/24') in the configuration file, the OpenVPN didn't work.
Obviously I don't know what I'm doing, and I really, don't believe that simply changing the IP will make it work, but I tried.
I hope I explained my problem as well.
My configuration file:
# OpenVPN Server Configuration File dev tun 0 ifconfig 192.168.0.1 192.168.0.2 cd /etc/openvpn secret key_file
In client I execute the 'openvpn' without the '--daemon' parameter. Then I want that my client uses a IP in a range (192.168.0.0/24, for example), instead of a static IP (192.168.0.2).I also thought to use a DHCP server, but I'm not sure that will work.
I'm running 11.04 on my Dell SXPS 1645. Today I unplugged my laptop from AC power a few times and after about 10 minutes, Ubuntu would hang, not responding to anything. Frozen mouse, frozen keys. The ONLY thing I could do to get it out was to do a hard hardware restart by holding down the power button.
It happened twice on Skype (and I thought it was just the buggy 2.2 beta that was hanging my beautiful OS), once while installing a printer, and once while I was just futzin around on firefox.
After some idle time Slackware hangs up/freezes. When, for an example, i turn on music i can hear it on idle time but after some time music still plays but i'm losing picture (monitor detects no signal), num lock is locked, led on keyboard are turned on but won't turn off while pressing num lock. I've switched off power saving options in Slackware and on bios setup.
My spec is:
X4 620 (without overclocking) AMD 760G (Radeon HD 3000) Catalyst 11.5 for Radeon graphic.
BTW - computer works fine with Windows. Also, with Slackware i can work for an hours, many hours and everything is fine but as soon as i leave it for some amount of time = it hangs/freezes. There is something wrong with hibernation. Not always computern is turned off correctly. TV is switched off, slackware logged off but i hear drives working and cooler fans. It should be switched off completly.
I installed Jessie day before yesterday on a freshly formatted partition. After a random time, it hangs. If I am playing music at the time, the music continues for a few more seconds _after_ the mouse and keyboard become unresponsive, if that is useful.
Sine I did not understand how to pick the desktop during the installation, I installed Gnome. Afterwards, I installed KDE. Now I have a lot of Gnome stuff around I don't really need. But they are in principle compatible, right?
This morning, the hang was almost immediate after logging on. Only Iceweasl and Amarok and a Konsole were running. I attempted to start Icedove, when everything hung.
Here is the relevant part of the syslog.
Dec 8 07:41:38 jon-desktop rsyslogd: [origin software="rsyslogd" swVersion="8.4.2" x-pid="775" x-info="http://www.rsyslog.com"] rsyslogd was HUPed ^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^
After that both systems hang with a black screen, running high CPU as I could hear the CPU fans running at max speed. Waited on both systems, but had to hard reset both.
#1 (using ext3, but mounted as ext2) tried to reboot, but had a LOT of file system issues that had to be resolved (fsck). After that the Video driver had to be reinstalled. Finally the system did reboot, but all icons on all GNOME desktops (~/Desktop) are white and have the ".desktop" extension in their name.
#2 (using ext4) came backup fine, but also required the video driver to be reinstalled. After that the system worked fine.
Still wondering how to resolve the GNOME Desktop Icon issue with #1. Tried to create a new user, but that had the same effect for the icons (launchers) in ~/Desktop. Icons for "Home", "Trash" and connected networks do display the normal names and have a normal image.
I have a problem with Adobe Flashplayer 10. It seems to be incompatible with a countdown timer on a specific site. I use firefox and when I open the site firefox freezes , hangs for a while and then I get an Adobe flashplayer 10 error stating the script encountered a problem. This is how and know the problem is the adobe flash and I know it is with that countdown timer as it only started when that was added to the site. Obviously it is a compatibility problem as it doesn't hapen on my Windows pc.
My question is two parts: a. Is there another flash player I can try with Firefox and b. If yes How do I uninstall the Adobe Flashplayer and install the other one.
Ubuntu 10.04.1 64 bit with all latest automatic updates , browser is Firefox.
I recently installed centos 5.5 on a new system, details below. All worked fine for a couple of weeks, then the system froze up. No network access, no keyboard/mouse, blank screen. Had to reboot. Happened again about a week later. Then started happening every couple of days, then daily, and today it happened three times.
I see nothing unusual in any of the logs. The freezing does not seem to be correlated with any particular activity. Happened in both gnome and kde. While it's up, everything seems to work fine. I looked on the intel site for a new driver for this chipset but didn't find a linux version. I tried different versions of this same kernel (PAE, centosplus etc) but have not tried an older kernel.
I installed memtest86 (with yum) but when I try to start it from grub, the screen goes blank for a few seconds, then it reboots. Can't get it to start. Tried a bootable memtest86 cd that worked before (couple of years ago) and it wouldn't boot from it (bios is set to boot first from cd). Maybe this is a strong hint?
My next steps are to burn a new cd of memtest86 and try that. And/or to start removing ram to see if any of them are the culprit. In the meantime I'm asking if any of you have had similar problems with this architecture, or have other suggestions of things I could try. I don't have pieces of hardware lying around that I can easily swap in and out, unfortunately. If all this fails I'll try FC13. Any advice on whether or not you think that might fix the problem would be appreciated, before I go to the trouble.code...
I upgraded from FC10 to FC11 yesterday.I had no problems using FC11 after I looked into the bootloader (not intuitive - Ha!).Tried to boot up this morning; and things seemed to work well until I tried to call up Firefox (added a few themes yesterday). The window pops open; but the computer freezes on the spot with an alarm (generic "beep", w/o the finishing "p").Tried it with Epiphany; and I get the same results with the exception of actually getting to the Home Page.Yum works for the most part - I reinstalled Firefox (no effect); but couldn't reinstall epiphany (keeps saying "there is no such package - did you mean 'epiphany'". No typos on my part - go figure). Doing Software/Package Updates (via System Menu) freezes the box as well.Did it with the system monitor on. It doesn't appear to be related to CPU Usage.
Had a FC10 liveUSB and used it for awhile (e.g. to check out the forums). After giving my ISP some grief about downloading speed, immediately received a note from their Abuse Department, saying that my machine had been infected with a virus and had been sending spam emails (post upgrade to FC11).
I have been running 32 bit karmic (and before that jaunty, intrepid and hardy) with no problems on my Dell D620 laptop. Since I upgraded to lucid, I get occasional freezes. It often happens at the gnome login screen after I click on my name but before I can enter the password, or upon restore from suspend but sometimes at other times. It doesn't happen all the time but often enough to be really annoying. When the freeze occurs, the mouse pointer responds to the touchpad or an external usb mouse, but no mouse button events are recognized and the keyboard has no effect either. I can't switch virtual terminals or anything. If the system was up and had a DHCP address at the time of the freeze, I believe the network still responds to ping. The only thing I can do to get the system back is hold the power button for 30 seconds until it powers off. The desktop CPU temperature monitor does not indicate excessive heating at the time of the freeze. I don't know whether I should try a re-install of lucid, or just go back to karmic.
We are having a cluster with couple of disk servers, compute nodes and a head node. Disk server is nfs mounted on all the compute and head nodes. The problem is that if any of the disk servers hangs, it freezes rest of the cluster too which is dangerous. Ideally, cluster should not care about the hanged server and run without any problem except files from that server is not visible. Is there any way I could avoid the problem of freezing cluster because of one hanged server?
Still cannot watch a flash video in full screen for more than 1 minute before it freezes/hangs. Ridiculous that this bug has been around for YEARS and no one took the time to fix it for new versions.
linux i have configured squid with dansguardian but not able to block the sites and url.. i am accessing dansgaurdian through webmin.. please help me out in the above (with screen shots)
I am current following this how to guide: [URL] I completed it and I am in the testing phases before I make it a public server...I plan to use webmin as my administrative tool on my 2 web servers...Should I install webmin on my load balancers as well? The reason I ask is I want to know if there is any benifit to put it on the load balacers...Would I get any added features?
I installed OpenSSH via tasksel and am using Webmin for administration. I'd like to be able to SSH externally and want to setup the necessary public/private keys to use in FileZilla.
In Webmin, under Servers > SSH Server I can click 'Host Keys' and see an RSA key. Is this the public or private key for my server? Do I need to copy this into a text file to import it into FileZilla on my remote PC (that I want to connect from)? Is that all that needs to be done (aside from opening the port on my router/firewall)?
Is there an automated way to set this up via Webmin?
I recently installed Ubuntu server 9.04. It appears to be functioning correctly in that I can acces it from other Windows machines ony my network. I installed Webmin to remotely administer this server, however I cannot connect using Webmin from my other machines. I am only running Samba on this server at the present time.
I attempted to access the webmin conf file at /etc/webmin/miniserv.conf but permission wasa denied, evenas root.
To make my problem simple to understand I've attached a picture. Basically, in the Webmin>Apache configuration page, where I used to also enable/disable the modules Apache was using (on Ubuntu 8.04) I've noticed now that the option to configure the modules is no more (on Centos 5). So, I'd like to disable and enable some modules but can't, like the mod_python for example which gives me hundreds of errors in the Apache's logs, but cannot.
how to view the Apache modules again in Webmin?
just noticed can't attach images... here's the link to the picture: [URL]
I have a computer running Ubuntu 10.04. I have installed Webmin on it and everything is working fine except for the GRUB module. I wish to know if there is a new GRUB module that supports GRUB 2? It may be beta or an unofficial one.
at the computer shop we have an ubuntu 9.10 server that we log into via ssh or webmin today i was trying to ssh into the machine and got connection refused, so i logged into webmin and found the ssh server not running when i tried to start with webmin it i got the error
Code: failed to start ssh server * /dev/null not a character device went over to the shell command part of webmin and issued ls /dev -l and looked at the output and found something of concern
I have recently downloaded and installed apache2 http server from tarball source (i'm running ubuntu but i think its more fun to use tarballs i don't know why but its how i am) anyway i just installed apache2 and when i go into the servers section of webmin and click on apache web server i get this message:
The Apache server executable /usr/local/apache2/conf/ does not exist. If you have Apache installed, adjust the module configuration to use the correct path. and when i go to the configuration menu i don't understand a word of it.
I'm a newbie here but I have a question on how to make the connection between webmin and thunderbird via POP3. I have webmin set up and it is able to send and receive mail via webmin but when I enter the account details in thunderbird it cant find the settings for my mail account. I'm not exactly sure where I need to go in webmin to set it up to allow a connection from a client to allow the downloading of mail to the client. Would simply prefer to go to thunderbird to send and receive mail as opposed to logging into webmin then going to my mail.
I run a web server using mandriva 2010.2 , I use webmin / virtualmin to facilitate the administration of virtual hosts, I've tried using nginx module for webmin that is in [URL] but for some reason the module could not be used by webmin.
