Mar 7, 2011Running an nginx webserver on Ubuntu 10.04 lts In the process of trying to optimize the mysql, various tuning scripts keep telling me to raise the table cache. But they also say the table cache should stay below 1/3 of the open files limit. I can raise that in mysql, but I guess you're not supposed to raise it above the OS's open files max. So I'd like to raise it (found what appear to be solid instructions here: [URL] But... Post by Kees here says it's not safe to raise it [URL] at least, not safe under certain conditions. But I'm not clear on what the conditions are. is it safe or not? If I knew how to just raise it for mysql, I'd do that. But as you can probably see, I'm pretty new to all this. May 4, 2011Newbie here! Our website CMS is a Tomcat webapp, which runs on a CentOS 5.6 release (Final). The webapp needs a permanent increase of the max. open files value. Currently, the site is "crashing" frequently due to continuous "Too many open files" exceptions that eventually will occur when traffic increases.
This is what I've done to try to increase the max. open files value code...
But still, when I log in (as any user, incl. root), ulimit -n shows 1024, not 16384. Am I missing something here? And, more importantly; Will Tomcat be able to open > 1024 files after my changes mentioned above?
(PS: I also tried rebooting, but no difference.)

May 16, 2011Last weekend i have increased the open file size (ulimit -n) for the application user id i have update the limits.conf file with necessary inputs restarted the service and the server as well, when i check the ulimit value for the specific user by switching user from other user it shows the new value (10240) but if i login directly using the application id the ulimit value shows as 1024 which one is the default one.

Server :: Limit On The Number Of Virtual Machines Running On RHES / CentOS XEN?
May 2, 2009We've been experiencing sudden host server crashes minutes after starting a fourth virtual machine. Our setup looks like:
Dell Poweredge T300
1 x Intel Xeon X3323 Quad Core 2.5 ghz
16 GB Ram
CentOS 5.3 (64 bit)
Server is running a stripped down version of CentOS 5.3 (64-bit), running only the built-in Xen Virtualization Environment. There is no other services running on the server (not samba, httpd, sendmail, cups... nothing except Xen) We've created several virtual machines, and as long as we don't start a fourth virtual machine everything runs smoothly (impresive hardware).
Each virtual server is configured as:
PARAVIRTUALIZED
1 Virtual CPU
1 GB RAM
However, 5 minutes or so after starting a fourth virtual machine, the entire host server crashes and restarts itself. Are we limited by the number of cores on the host machine CPU (4 cores)? 1 for the host and 3 for virtual machines? We've read in forums about other Xen setups running up to 11 virtual machines on less powerful hardware? (a dual core server). Should we be using FULLY VIRTUALIZED virtual machines instead? Is the number of XEN virtual machines in fact limited by the number of cores? If so, how can someone run several virtual machines on a single core host?
By the way, we were replacing a previous Dell Server (Poweredge 2600 with 512 MB Ram and a single Xeon single core processor running Open Virtuozzo). We were able to run up to 16 virtual machines at the same time. Of course none of the machines endured hard work (testing environments, etc). But hey, my point is that we expected to get a much higher number of virtual machines on this new hardware.

The bold number of 6.4 is the % of sever memory this process is using. 6.4 % of 512 MB of memory is about 32 MB of memory, so it appears that this isn't being limited by php.ini. Am I correct? (Basically, something like the setting in php.ini which limits suphp processes in the same way.)

Mar 23, 2011I have just finished an install of Cent 5.5. I loaded up a trunk for a software application I want to compile on cent, but I cannot read the .cpp files. The issue seems to be with the file extension. If I change the extension to .txt, they open just fine. My .FOR, .FPP, and .DAT files display fine, but the .cpp and .h give me an error, "Couldn't display...". What is the problem here that won't let me open these files in gedit?

Whenever I am trying to change the webroot of the httpd server, it usually say "directory doesn't exist". whereas which can't be the case as it is home directory of the user.
To achieve this, what Do I need to do?
The second issue, I am facing that whenever I am adding new directories to public_html folder, it is not accessible. as the error page 404 is shown. I have changed the permissions to 0705 and ownership is also transferred to other user. What else is required to make new directories accessible by the web?

Whenever a new domain user logs in, it creates the all the appropriate files but the group owner for license.txt is the users domain group. My current workaround seems like more effort than it's worth, is there another way to get this process solved easier/more secure?
- copy the license.txt into /etc/skel
- created a script to check for the presence of license.txt, check it's permissions and change them if necessary
- gave the domain's group sudo [nopasswd] access to the script (the script is not writable)
- execute the script in /etc/bashrc

So after compiled the cgi script, I put it in the folder /var/www/cgi-script/
I try to access via my web browser and in the apache error log : I have this "/var/www/cgi-bin/mapserv" : error while loading shared libraries: libclntsh.so.11.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"
In my httpd.conf, I just add the following in order to provide the shared libraries for my cgi script :
