View 3 RepliesI've been using Ubuntu 10.x for several months without any major problems. Everything was fine until this week.
In the past few days there's been a strange new problem. When I turn my computer on, it works fine for 10 minutes, and then the hard drive suddenly starts spinning and won't stop. While this happens the computer is virtually unusable. Mouse moves slow and jerky; apps don't respond; and eventually the windows close by themselves, the whole screen goes blank, and the system reboots. The whole process takes a long time, sometimes 30 minutes.
The only change I made just before this problem started was upgrading Firefox Beta 4 version 10 to the latest version 11. So, I deleted it, and went back to the latest stable version 3.6.x. That seemed to fix the problem for a day or so. But then it started happening again. I deleted all signs of Firefox; it still happens. So it's not a browser issue.
I am stumped. Today I started my computer and just let it sit there without opening any programs at all except the system monitor. It ran fine for the usual 10-15 minutes, nothing changed out of the ordinary in terms of computer resources used in the system monitor, and then suddenly the drive started spinning wildly again .....
Right now my computer's been on for 10 minutes and I am typing this message .... but who knows what will happen right now.
I have an HP Mini 210 and I recently performed an Upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 and noticed that the netbook is much more noisy now (and can get very warm). I am not sure wether is the fan or the hard drive spinning. I did a "top" but no process was high consuming. I also thought that maybe compiz could be responsable for it, so I disabled all the visual effects, but still no change.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running 10.04 LTS (64 bit) During a recent attempt at dual booting Windows 7, the Windows installer made a boot partition on the wrong drive, formatting the drive, and therefore destroying all my data.
The original partition was NTFS, and the new (unwanted partition) is NTFS.
Is there something in Linux I can do to recover the data that was there, or am I going to have to install Windows on yet another drive and use some Windows tools?
The data on this drive is extraordinarily important, containing ten years of digital photos, my source codes, and musical compositions (protools sessions etc).
I've been using ubuntu about a year, so I have a fair amount of experience with it. Today I was trying to install ubuntu on my new laptop, which doesn't have an optical drive. I don't have a usb stick, so I attempted to partition my external hard drive. I stupidly clicked "erase disk" on startup disk creator and erased the entire drive instead of the partition. I want to get back the files I had on this external. I searched and managed to find that people had been successful with testdisk. when I choose to analyse, it only finds the partition I created for the live cd.
When I choose advanced, I can find my older partition (FAT32) but when I choose to undelete I get:

Sectors are identical.
A valid FAT Boot sector must be present in order to access. Any data; even if the partition is not bootable. I searched but I couldn't find anyone receiving this error message or how to deal with it. So I tried using photorec. Photorec is recovering all of my documents currently but without the filenames and file structure, it's more or less worthless.
I have an hp laptop with 2 hdd slots, both are sata. it came with a 320gb hdd with vista ultimate 64. i added another 320gb hard drive to my laptop and installed kubuntu on the second hard drive. Since vista was my primary hard drive, parts of grub were installed on it i.e. stage 1.5. And the rest was installed on the kubuntu hard drive. Because of that neither os would boot independently of one another.
I eventually got tired of kubuntu and in wanted to uninstall it. I formatted that disk. Now vista gave me grub errors, like I knew it would.I was going to fix the vista boot sector and mbr by running bootrec.exe off of the vista disc. But since I have an hp laptop, hp doesnt provide a recovery disc with just vista, it is an install of the factory image of the os plus software and therefore doesnt have the utilities I need to fix my problem.I ended up navigating to some sort of command line in the windows recovery environment and tried running it there, but no luck.
I tried navigating in the hp recovery environment, and accidently had vista start to reinstall itself on the drive, and actually I did that 3-4 times, each of which I stopped the recovery early on, within 30 seconds, but it had managed to mess up my partition table. I was wondering if there is some utilities in linux/ windows that will help me restore the partitions back the way they should be? I have done a data recovery with get data back for ntfs, and was pretty successful getting some stuff back, figures since the mft was screwed up.
So first of all I want to make an exact clone of the hard drive. Something like dd but just make an image file for now. Since there are no partitions on the drive I dont think I can use partimage, or drive image xml and I wonder if clonezilla will work. And I dont know how to test it without have to reload the image and wiping the drive in the process. I have imaged the drive with get data back but it does me no good cause I cannot restore that image back to the drive, or at least dont think I can.
Second I would like to see if I can recover the partition table , or mft that was over written. Here is a list of programs I can use for imaging or recovering. [URL]Third, since I have 2 320gb hard drives, one that is corrupted, and one that I took kubuntu off of and loaded vista with the recovery disks. Can I take the mbr, and partition table, or boot sector off of the working vista and move it to the broken 320 and fix it that way?

Recently I built a web server for my clients to host in house. After talking with the web developer they informed me that i needed a CentOS computer with Drupal for them to design the website. This is my first Linux install and after spending hours upon hours configuring the server with FTP, SSH, and configuring our DD-WRT router with proper port forwarding we turned it over to the web designers to start work on the website.
A month goes by and the website is almost done, at this point we go to make a full backup of the hard drive. Due to a hardware problem it fried the circuit board of the hard drive. After attempting to recover the files myself we opted to send it to a HD data recovery facility to recover the information. We have received back a DVD containing the 2GB's worth of data from the CentOS hard drive. It contained 2 folders one for each of the partitions. I can view and see all the files on my windows machine and it appears that all of the data was recovered successfully. I harbored some hope that i could simply reinstall CentOS with the same account information and then just drop the recovered files on top of the new installation and have it start working.
I then reinstalled CentOS on another hard drive in the same computer and used the same credentials for installation. After i successfully booting into CentOS i turned off the machine and connected the hard drive it to my Windows bench machine. After booting into Windows i was unable to browse the hard drive. After doing more research and installing Ext2fsd i was able to see the 2 partitions CentOS had just created, but only able to access the Boot partition. After more research i discovered the default installation of CentOS creates a Raw file type for the 2nd partition and that is why i am having issues reading it inside of Windows.
I then downloaded a copy of Knoppix to see if this would allow me to write the old files over the new ones. After booting up the CD i could only browse to the /boot drive(and im not even sure if this is Knoppix's Virtual /boot or my CentOS /boot).
My question is what would be the best steps to recovery for my scenario? Can the files be placed to the drive and have everything restored? Is the only way to recovery thru reinstalling all applications and reconfiguring from scratch? How difficult is Drupal DB to recover in this type of scenario?
I'm just curious - why do all linux distros (all I've seen) run their periodic disk checks during boot? I mean, I understand that a disk should be checked now and then, but why does the system do it during boot, when I'm waiting for it to load, instead of checking them during shutdown, when (most probably) user doesn't need the computer anymore.

So far the best result i have gotten is it will sit on the loading screen for a while then dump. When I open more than 4 windows in firefox or whenever I open "Ubuntu Software Center" the hard disk keeps spinning, mouse and keyboard are frozen. I tried to reboot from tty1. It takes around 3 minutes to get the command prompt after pressing Ctrl + Alt + F1. I reinstalled 11.04 several times. This problem is not solved. I have applied all the updates. What program is exactly causing this problem?

Want to add Ubuntu + Swap in the 90 or so GB range, fairly new to partitioning. Trying to create recovery disks using system tools is over 16 Gb, for that kind of expense I may as well just order recovery disks OEM if (When) Windows falls apart.
When I run Ubuntu liveCD (Lucid), even when no programs are running and cpu is 98% idle, the CD Rom continues spinning constantly, even though it apparently isn't accessing any files. At this rate, the motor will burn out prematurely.I don't think this is normal. How can I troubleshoot this and keep it from running?

The live CD boots, but the dvd drive stops spinning after i click the install button...the one that says i can't turn back. Nothing seems affected by quitting the install. I have no idea what to do except to not turn back to VistaOS. I intensely dislike that "operating system".

It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.
Trying to install Fedora 12 using the 6 CDs. Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

One is installed with a Linux OS, the other with Windows Vista.For the Linux hard disk, will I be able to simply use these 2 hard disks on the new system and boot up, retaining all my data? I partitioned it in 4 sectors.After connection, nmediatly the mounted disk would appear on the screen,(each partition with its respective name), and could use it as any other folder.To unmount the external Hard disk, I just ejected each partition, and had no problem. I used the same HD with my Mc, and things were all right, I used to backup automatically the Mc. However after having been using the system in this way for more than half a year, suddenly the hard disk began to rattle...and the SUSE system on the DELL, nor the Mc can mount the external hard disk any more. Thus, the partitions can not be mounted any more. When I cd to /media/ in the SUSE, the names of the partitions appear, but they seem to be empty..On the Mc, going to /Volumes/, before the problem appeared, the names of the partitions were there... but now, they are no more and the automatic back up either.So my question is, how to mount the disk, if it needs mounting... or how I can recover the partitions and the data therein... I am clueless, after two weeks trying to solve the problem..

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am booting Slackware 13.0 on an X86 from a (master) ATA hard drive. I have added a second (slave) hard drive that contains an installation of Slackware 13.1. This works in so far as I can boot 13.0 from the master drive, then mount the slave drive and read and write files to it. So the hardware is basically working.What I want to do is configure lilo so I can choose to boot either 13.0 or 13.1. So far I have not gotten this to work.
Under 13.0 the slave disk appears as /dev/hdb. The root-partion for 13.1 on the slave is the first primary partion on the slave, and appears as /dev/hdb1 when viewed under 13.0. What stanza should I add to lilo.conf to make the slave 13.1 bootable?
I have a laptop with only 30GB storage and I want to install Lubuntu in virtual box but Lubuntu needs 5GB of storage space which i dont have. View 6 Replies View RelatedI thought that alignment of 4096-byte sector Advanced Format hard drives was automatically taken care of via Gparted or Disk Utility until I bought a Hitachi HTS547575A9E384 (Travelstar 5K750) and saw that Disk Utility showed my partitions to be out of alignment. I then realized that my WD, which I had bought a few months ago, probably had its jumper set to emulate a 512-byte sector legacy drive (512e) and is probably not set to the AF setting.
Straight to the problem.
I've searched many sites, some of which suggest using fdisk (others the proprietary software of the hard drive's manufacturer). It is essential that one change the arguments prior to changing the partition table as there is no way back (yet, as far as I know) without having to move data to another drive and starting all over:

the hard disc has two partitions, one is 156gb ntfs, currently with windows xp prof sp2, and I am trying to install linux to the second partition, also currently ntfs.I am not a total newbie (i used fedora 10 last semester and ubuntu the semester before that). I have tried installing ubuntu9.04, fedora 10, fedora 11, and opensuse11.1 to this computer, and every time the installation probes for hard disks it comes up with zip, unless I have my external disks connected. Otherwise "No hard disks were found for the installation. Please check your hardware!"with OK button.
I also tried with gparted to see if I could find the hard disk, and still had no luck. I googled my problem and found others with similar problem but no satisfactory solution.does anybody have any idea what could be wrong and how to fix it??
A few years ago I built a small Slackware system and, for storage, I used using a 2Gb Compact Flash card plugged into the primary IDE interface. Initially, I made a bootable CD rom, booted the new system from that, copied the file system to the CF card and then ran LILO to install a boot sector on the CF 'disk' /dev/hda. That all worked well enough.
The only trouble is that the CF card, being an early one, is rather slow and so I've just bought an Innodisk 2Gb Disk-on-Module which ought to be much faster. I have plugged that into the secondary IDE interface, I've run cfdisk to make a partition, formatted it using mkreiserfs and copied all of the contents of the CF card on /dev/hda to the new device on /dev/hdc. So far, so good. But...Now I need to run LILO from the existing CF card in /dev/hda to put a boot sector on the new /dev/hdc. Then I want to move the new device from /dev/hdc and put it in /dev/hda once it's bootable.
I'm stuck to know how to configure LILO to install a new boot sector on /dev/hdc. I don't appear to be able to make LILO understand what I'm trying to do. If I change the line 'boot = /dev/hda' in lilo.conf to 'boot = /dev/hdc', LILO aborts with an error message.
