Cornfusion between having both "File Sharing" & "Personal File Sharing"?..
File sharing WAS working until recent pkgs were installed, but now a mystery...
I set up a new copy of 10.04, and I encrypted each partition. Now, all of the partitions show up in nautilis.
I have two drives, one has /home, and the other has /, /boot, and a swap area.
Correction, /bbot does not show up, but all of the others show up in nautilis(including swap), but I can't open them, I can just access them normally through /
how I can hide these?
I recently updated to Ubuntu Lucid Lynx from Karmic (fresh install though). All of the packages I used in Karmic seem to work nicely in Lucid, with one exception gnome-rdp. I'm a sysadmin in several windows environments so as you can imagine I love the session storage and grouping features. Unfortunately gnome-rdp is not displaying the group names. it stores my session and creates the group structure just fine, it just doesn't show me the group names in the app or the right-click menu on the top panel icon. My gut says it has something to do with the new Lucid theme, but I like the new theme. Does anyone know of a config file I can edit, or something I can do to disable theme integration, just for gnome-rdp?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a fresh install of OpenSUSE 11.4 64bit and I have installed the AMD Display drivers for my Radeon HD 5970. Everything seems to be working quite well. I have a multiple monitor setup (1280x1024 monitor and a 1920x1080 monitor).
I have my primary display set to 1920x1080, however when I try to enable the second display, I get a CRTC error that the display is over the maximum (1920x1920). If I enable both monitors at lower resolutions, there is no problem.
I have done a fair bit of reading and have been unable to determine where this maximum is set, or how to change it. I'd like to be able to run both monitors at their native resolutions.
I just installed 10.04 Lucid Lynx and have a serious graphics problem. I've attached a picture to show the problem.
Some Background:
Pentium 4 3.06GHz
1.5GB RAM
ATI Radeon 9600
I installed via liveUSB but had to choose the "nomodeset" option by pressing F6. Otherwise after the Ubuntu boot screen the graphics went like that in the attached image. The installation went fine (took less than 15 minutes!) but after the reboot the graphics problem returned. I can't see anything and the system is useless this way. I can't post up any logs (I'm typing this from the liveUSB).
When I booted my computer this morning (lucid lynx 10.04, 2.6.32-21) I found that it showed me a login box, much like normal, but that the text field where I type my username was about a pixel high and disabled. So I couldn't type my username, or password, and had to resort to a tty and links to get here and ask someone for help. I can't find anything on google that looks like people having the same issue and frankly I'm not even sure what is wrong.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just did the upgrade and I want to turn off the display after 30 minutes. I check that selection but the display does not turn off after 30 minutes. It is still on. I enabled this setting through the power management. The screen saver is on, go to blank display but the monitor does not turn off.
On Windows, dual boot on the same machine, the monitor does display off. I don't know if this is part of the problem or not, but when I go to "System -> Preferences", there are two different "Screensaver" options.

The Windows-E shortcut brings up the 'expo' display of all four workspaces in a line.
Is there a way of making (say) the top right corner of the screen sensitive so that moving the mouse there triggers the display of all workspaces?

/apps/compiz/plugins/expo/allscreens/options/expo_edge
but that might do something different.
I'm having trouble displaying Xwindows programs on a remote machine. If I run "ssh -X newmachine" and I login and then run a program like xclock, I get the error message:
Error: Can't open display: localhost:10.0
If I run the same command to an anothermachine which is running Ubuntu 8.04 it works fine and xclock displays on my localmachine. If I run the command "echo $DISPLAY" on newmachine, I see:
localhost:10.0
Also, I have checked and xauth is installed on newmachine. What setting I have to change on Ubuntu 10.04 to allow remote display of Xwindows programs?

Lucid installed without any errors that I can see of off the main i386 installation CD, but after booting I get no display. Even in recovery mode. The monitor doesn't go into sleep mode and I can tell that the OS is actually running the background because I can do a Ctrl-Alt-Del and do a proper shutdown. I'm running an nvidia GT 9500. Everything is working fine on Karmic.

When karmic boots 2.6.31-21 and initrd.img has finished loading, and I have taken quiet splash out of boot line, I get nothing on the external display until gnome come up. Does the kernel driver only recognise internal displays until X takes over, or is there something wrong with the karmic 855GM kernel driver?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Lucid 64 connected to my 27" TV with 4:3 aspect ratio via s-video from an nVidia NV4 GeForce 6200SE TurboCache 256 MB card using the 173 driver set at 800X600. After hours (don't get on my case, this is the first time I've had hardware that would run well on a TV) and hours of tinkering I've gotten a feel for how to do this and have some pretty good results. However, I have two problems.
.01 The display isn't quite filling the entire screen. It's leaving about a .25 inch black bar all the way around the screen. This is negligible and if I can't fix it with only minor adjustments then so be it. I can live with it.
.02 This one isn't so minor. Many of the Windows are opening with portions of themselves cut off of, usually, the bottom of the screen. This makes, among other things, getting to the Close button rather impossible.
I recently got a Canon Powershot SD780 IS. It takes HD video at 780p. It's great, except that the videos won't display properly in Ubuntu Netbook Remix (Lucid) on my Dell Mini 10v.I've tried using Gstreamer (Banshee), Xine (Totem-xine), and MPlayer (GNOME MPlayer). These all should have worked, which makes me think something may be wrong either with the files themselves or my computer. Anyone have any idea what's going on here?FYI, when I pull up the Properties dialogue for one of the videos and look in the Audio/Video tab, it says:

After installing updates, a can`t login to Gnome. I see only purple screen. I was googling for it for several hours, but nothing helps me. pressing ctl-alt-f1 just before login, i can start gnone-panel as root. this brings me full functionallity, but only as root (and login screen is still there - on the desctop)

killall gnome-keyring-manager just after login
have enough disk space

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently did a fresh install of Lucid on an HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC laptop. At least once a day the main menu and context menus(desktop) in gnome stop working (They will not drop down/ appear). This includes all menus in gtk apps but not menus in not gtk apps such as firefox. I have an autohide panel at the top of the screen for my main menu, shortly after the menus stop working (but never at the same time), the panel wont unhide and the workspace swtcher applet stops working, this corresponds to when the buttons on the panel I can still see (at the bottom) stop working. When the workspace switcher applet goes, so to does the ability to switch using hotkeys (ctr alt left/right).
Suspending then resuming the laptop usually fixes these problem. Sometimes however 2 suspends are needed to fully fix the menus. It is possible for the context menu on the desktop to be working after a suspend, but not the main menu (but not always). A second suspend/ resume fixes this. I also noticed that this happened one of the times I booted a lucid release candidate live CD on my machine. I'm not sure but this may have something to do with the fact that I installed using a release candidate live CD instead of the proper release. (I have done all the updates).

i have tightVNCserver running to provide me with a means of working on my machine whilst the wife watches mythTV on the (physical) display.
in 8.04 i used to have "gnome-panel &" as a line in my /home/mike/.vnc/xstartup file, and it worked fine, when i logged in via VNC i had a nice gnome panel to start apps from etc.
since 10.04 this stopped working and i had to change gnome-panel to gnome-session. this works... but now it loads everything up in the VNC window just like it does in my main window. this is a problem because it loads things like mythTV front end and so on... i don't want it to do that in my VNC window.
does anyone know how it might be possible for me to have two different 'types' of gnome session? Settings i change in System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications are common to both my VNC and my physical displays so i can't turn off mythTVfrontend in there to solve the problem.
i'm not sure why gnome-panel stopped working in my xstartup file, but it happened when i upgraded from 8.04 to 10.04. if i try it in the ugly xterm window on VNC i get:

How do you install the game 'same GNOME' in Lucid?It was my 8 yr old nephew's favorite game. It's not in Synaptic or Ubuntu Software Center for Lucid.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am interested in removing the gnome panels from my desktop in 10.04. I know i can auto-hide the top and bottom panels and there is also an option to delete them. When they auto-hide a small white line is still visible and i accidentally hover over them sometimes briefly showing them also. I also do not want to do anything permanent like deleting them.In some past forum posts i saw people saying go to System>Preferences>Sessions but this option seems to be missing in lucid and these seem to be for slightly older versions on ubuntu. I then added the gnome-session-properties command in the Edit Menu... of System but all it did was launch Startup Applications. One post i saw said to go into Sessions, required sessions and make it empty. Should this work like i want it too and if so, is there an option like this still in Lucid. I basically want to remove the panels completely from my desktop, but still want to be able to bring them back if i want too also (Hopefully without having to edit them again, but i can live with it if i do).

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've been running Ubuntu Lucid for six months now without problems. Last night my keyboard suddenly stopped working in any applications under Gnome. Rebooting didn't help. Mouse still works fine.But the keyboard still works fine when typing in my password, and if I start KDE instead it also works OK. So it doesn't seem to be hardware failure.I see from googling that others have had similar problems, but most seem to have been on installation, and involved either VMWare or USB keyboards. I'm not using either of those.When it broke I was trying to build PyCairo into an alternative installation of Python2.5, don't know if this is relevant, if some key package got somehow corrupted.

Ok... now, on KDE I see these ~ files and I can delete them if I want but they're hidden in gnome... Gnome seems to treat them as special hidden files (just like .mydir directories) How do I make ~ files visible in gnome so I could edit or delete them?

At some point, I suspect since the last kernel upgrade, I've begun experiencing a problem when the screen locks: I tap a key on the keyboard and the monitors wake up, but I get no "unlock" dialog. I can usually Ctrl-Alt-F1, login and gracefully reboot the system, but sometimes I have to hit hard reset. For now I've disabled the screensaver in "System -> Preferences -> screensaver" (I assume that'll stop the problem), but that's not an optimal solution.
Ok, I've tried Unity for awhile now and I can say it lacks a couple of critical things for me. First is launchers, second is a task bar. While casually browsing the web is ok, more serious work involving several windows has become a pain.
I have a dual screen with four virtual desktops. I'm tired of searching for my windows.
Now, I've read in a few places that I just need to choose "Ubuntu-classic" whenever I boot my machine. This is fine, but for the fact that I don't have any options on my login screen... Just the login and the accessibility & power buttons at the bottom right.
