Fedora :: Why Does 11 Gnome Have Two Places To Set Display Attributes
Oct 24, 2009
Why does Fedora 11 Gnome have two places to set display attributes, one under System -> Preferences -> Display and the other under System -> Administration -> Display?
There are measures to stop this in Windows even though there are still things you can't get rid of. Now on to my question, Why can't I edit the Places menu but I can edit the Applications and System menus. I really want to get rid of the Recent Documents menu header. I don't like things like that right up on front street. I am quite a stickler about privacy and one of the reasons I decided to try out linux is because I heard it was better in the sense of respecting privacy. But now I am seeing that you don't even have the ability to get rid of a tracking item such as Recent Documents. Quite disappointing.
I can understand tracking recent changes to the system but it is not necessary to track what you open or what you browse on the internet. Hence Firfox's ability to not store history and the clear cache, history, etc. on shutdown of Firefox. So Am I misinformed about the fact that linux does respect privacy? What kind of world are we coming to that it is necessary to track everything. Especially here in the U.S., I mean I'm thinking 1984 here lol. Anyway, how to remove these tracking features in Fedora. I mean in the sense of just stopping it. It sucks to have to go through and "clear" everything that tracks you every time you want to log off or shut down.
I'm having a strange problem in my gnome installation. I have about a dozen window managers installed, and just to test the new KDE 4.4 update I used kde for one day (use gnome mostly) and now the gnome places menu opens up the kde file manager dolphin instead of nautilus. How can I change it. It doesn't even appear in the edit menus item on right clicking the menu.
For about a week or two when I try to open a folder from the menu "Places" of Gnome 2.32.0 (with Fedora 14 OS) the program Rythmbox starts instead. This happens even when I try to access a connected harddrive which requires entry of a code. After entering the code again Rythmbox opens! This doesn't happen only with "Computer", "Network" and "Connect to Server" of "Places". I can't think of anything that I did (apart from using Rythmbox quite often recently) that could have caused this, so I assume that it is a bug of Gnome. Have other people encountered this problem? (I assume that it is not Fedora specific, but rather a general problem of Gnome) If so,
When I go to Main Menu>Places, nothing but Computer and Network works correctly. Choosing Main Menu>Places>Downloads, for instance, generates a little disk activity, but never displays a window with the contents of the Downloads directory. In an effort to fix the problem, I just upgraded from 10.4 to 1.10, but the same thing still happens. How do I get the Main Menu>Places icons to display the appropriate windows?
Does anybody know how to get attributes for a video file from the command line? For instance I'd like to get the video file running time. I've looked all over and I can't find out how to do this; the "file" command shows some data but not running time. I'm sure there has to be a way.
I have a fresh install of OpenSUSE 11.4 64bit and I have installed the AMD Display drivers for my Radeon HD 5970. Everything seems to be working quite well. I have a multiple monitor setup (1280x1024 monitor and a 1920x1080 monitor).
I have my primary display set to 1920x1080, however when I try to enable the second display, I get a CRTC error that the display is over the maximum (1920x1920). If I enable both monitors at lower resolutions, there is no problem.
I have done a fair bit of reading and have been unable to determine where this maximum is set, or how to change it. I'd like to be able to run both monitors at their native resolutions.
Is there a way for the time at the top of the screen to display seconds as well as the date ?
My clock seems to be about :40 seconds off... before i upgraded from f-13 i had my time controlled by ntp(how to verify ntp is enabled) ? even with network time = yes, it seems to lag a little.
I figured out the network time. it is under a whole separate menu for some reason.
Is there a way to get weather/ temperature like in classic gnome ?
Rite now my clock reads: tue 3:50 pm...Is there a way i can make it read: tue, aug 20, 2011 3:50:45 pm
I had a computer running a NVIDA Quadro NVS 450 with 4 screens on Fedora 14 and it worked fine. I make a new install with Fedora 15 and I am now not able any more running more as one screen with Fedora 15. I am running now on run level 3 and when I configure the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf for one screen, Gnome starts correctly. When I change to two screens, and runs "startx", Gnome 3 starts and displays only the background picture without any manager. The file /var/log/Xorg.0.log shows no errors.
Just installed F15, was everything fine, but then gnome got away, from terminal I have<gnome-session:1951): Warning can't start display message. Before that I put in config file one extra line to start tint2 like <sleep 3 && tint2.Not sure was it the reason?
I upgraded to FC10 from FC8 and my Gnome-panel no longer spans both screens in my dual monitor configuration. This worked fine in FC8, and I can't seem to figure out how to make this config work in FC10.
I've tried Xinerama and Twinview, and various configurations in xorg.conf, and cannot seem to make it happen.
How to make both my panels (top and bottom) go across both screens?
New install of FC12 and after logging into the KDE desktop then going back to Gnome, the Desktop Config File for KDE shows on the Gnome desktop. I ran gconf-editor and I can see the file but no option to not display in Nautilus. Is there an easy way to not display the file on the Gnome desktop without messing up the KDE config file?
Is it possible to edit the "Places" menu the way one can edit the "Applications" and "System" menus on gnome?
Right-clicking on the bar gives only Applications and System as editable menus. I would like to remove some items from the places menu and add others of my own liking
I just upgraded from 8.04 to 10.04. Almost everything works great. However the gnome menu "Places" home folder. home .documents, music, pictures and videos does not open up Nautilus. I get the error "Could not open location 'file:///home/tom'" This should be an easy fix but I am lost. I also am having an issue with Alt-F2 not opening up the run command. I might be having an issue with key board layout.
I am getting ready to re-install my computer, with Fedora 14, and I was wondering if there is a way to backup the entries under "Places" because I have about 200 Mapped drives there, and I don't want to have to manually re-insert them.
I have a strange problem that has "Just" appeared. When I go to " Places" and click on a folder Videos for example - the display shows "No Images" however if I click on the image icon - all the videos on file are displayed. If I insert a USB memory stick - open this - ALL my folders are displayed as normal in the side pane.Equally if I go to " Computer " open this - all folders are displayed in the side pane.
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 with Gnome as my desktop enviroment. I used Wubi to install from my laptop's default OS, Vista. I keep most of my media on the Windows partition, mostly for ease of use - such as streaming a movie through my xbox etc I would like to know if there is a way to edit the Gnome 'places' menu to have Music, Pictures etc direct to my /host/users equivalent.
I have tried using likewise but I came across this yesterday. When you install Likewise only on a Linux, Unix, or Mac computer and not on Active Directory, you cannot associate a Likewise cell with an organizational unit, and thus you have no way to define a home directory shell in Active Directory for users who log on the computer with their domain credentials. I am trying to pull attributes from acitve directory.. namely the homeDirectory
I need your assistance before I start reloading software.I have a MP3 player which is owned by Root. I have tried the following:
- in terminal - chown as both my usual log-in and root...operation not permitted I ran chown as both su, root, and myself - In Nautilus - I can't change any of the file attributes..again opening it as any of the users above. I used to be able to copy files over to the MP3 player but not the Sandisk..but not I can't copy or do anything to the files on both.
I used dd to make an image of a harddrive in a piece of equipment I have (Denon DJ decks in this case).
Normally, when I connect this device via USB, it gets recognised by Ubuntu and mounts automatically.
Now I have a binary file - an image of the drive, but I don't know how to mount it. I'm guessing it's fat or fat32. Is there anyway I can probe the file to find out what it is? fdisk -l told me that I 'must set cylinders'..
I need to copy my data from the pc to an external hard drive with keeping the attributes; so i used the command
cp -rp ~/sourceDir ~/Destination
but when i am coping it it give the error message "cp: failde to preserve ownership for 'file' : Operation not permitted and it copied the files to the destination but the attributes has changed from
-rw-r--r-- to -rwxr-xr-x
I tried to copy it by loging as the root also but still the same thing happens. how to copy the files with preserving the attributes
I have a bunch of files on a usb stick that have just the e attribute set. So I can't chattr them, rm -f fails and chmod fails, all whether as user or root. How can I get rid of the e attribute? Failing that, how can I get rid of the files?
