Software :: Start Local Applications On Apache Server Using Browser

Nov 9, 2010

I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to configure apache or any other linux http server, to allow the visiting user to start applications installed locally on the http server and get the GUI of that application displayed in a java applet (or any other similar solution). In short, I'm looking for an alternative solution to proprietary technologies such as Citrix and Microsoft Remote Access Gateway.

OpenSUSE Install :: KDE And LXDE Won't Start ; Xterm Okay

Aug 4, 2011

Since this morning, I'm having a problem which symptoms are similar to this one : Cannot Login, KDE won't start - OpenSUSE 11.3, but it affects only one user.Everything was fine yesterday, but now, everytime this one user tries to start his KDE session, the screen goes black for a few seconds before coming back to the login screen.

I tried the following :

- I installed LXDE and tried to log in : same problem

- I tried to log in Xterm : no problem

- I created a new user and tried to log in : no problem, be it KDE or LXDE

- I cleared /tmp : same problem. My /home partition is 98% full but still has 2-3GB available. The / partition is 45% full with 28GB left.

[code]....

From what I've gathered so far, it seems the problem is user-specific, graphical session-sepcific, but not desktop-specific (since both KDE and freshly installed LXDE fail in the same way)... and now I don't know what else to try.

My setup :

OpenSUSE Tumbleweed
Linux 2.6.37.6-0.7-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-07-21 02:17:24 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Fedora :: Boot Stops At 'Start Service Local'

Feb 13, 2011

I performed the first update in 4 months to my Fedora 12 Constantine. I also removed a 'dial-up' package (figured i didnt need it) and the KDE package after the update. Firefox was not getting a connection to the internet at this point. The network view showed the ethernet as inactive. Everything besides Firefox appears to work fine.

I restart machine.

It boots until right after the fedora logo fills up. At this point my dual monitors go to sleep. No response from anything. When I start in interactive mode I hit y for everything. Everything works great until libvirtd, libvirt-guest, and local. After y on all three nothing happens. I can type on the screen but no response. It just sits there. I can boot into text mode and do whatever I want. What can I do? What other information do I need to move forward?

I have looked at the Xorg.0.?? i forget what its called. I am not versed in reading the messages in it. Same for the other logs I looked at.

How I troubleshoot Linux problems: Install Linux -> Problem -> Google -> Run Command -> Didn't work? -> Start Over

Slackware :: Intel Graphics / Vertical Lines From Xpdf/gv Under Xterm Stick To Xterm Window Making It Unreadable?

Jun 13, 2011

Start xpdf or gv. Click an xterm to be active and slide it over xpdf/gv. Vertical lines from xpdf/gv under the xterm stick to the xterm window above and make it unreadable.

The problem does NOT show with KDE default settings with display effects on but does show in fvwm, xfce etc, and in KDE without effects.

On a system with a Sandy Bridge integrated graphics (i5-2400) the problem went away by downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.13.0. But it was not enough for another system with 945G which needed downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.12.0.

CentOS 5 :: Cannot Find "xterm" To Start A Failsafe Session?

Feb 22, 2010

I just performed a clean install of CentOS 5.4 on a Dell PowerEdge 1950III server. When I booted up for the first time, I begin seeing problems with the following error:There was an error loading the theme TreeFlowerFailed to open file'/usr/share/gdm/themes/TreeFlower/background.png': No such file or directoryOnce I hit OK there I get this:There was an error loading the theme, and the default theme could not be loaded. Attempting to start the standard greeterI then get the standard greeter, and I am able to log in as root. However, once logged in I can open neither Firefox nor a terminal. I can use some programs such as OpenOffice.org, but I cannot use a terminal or a web browser. The next thing I try is to log in to a failsafe terminal session. When I try this I get perhaps the most worrisome error so far:Cannot find "xterm" to start a failsafe session.

Fedora :: How To Create A Local Repository Server

Feb 24, 2010

Well my local LUG has developed a cooperation with the university. Their major is music. So we would like to develop a local repository to help the updates to be faster. I checked the How to set up a local Yum Repository on Fedora 8. I guess it's same with 12.
My questions are:

1. How much space do we need?

2. Since we might setup repository for another distro, is it a way to be done with other distro? The above address describes only how to make it in Fedora.

3. Since we'll have it installed and will be usefull for the university, can we make it available to the rest of the world? Maybe contact someone for this.

I'm in the process of creating local repos for our company servers (CentOS 5.5) and laptops (Fedora 13). And while the CentOS part went perfect the Fedora part is causing major trouble. But first things first, here's the setup: a central CentOS 5.5 server is running Apache2 and has a VirtualHost listening on Port 8080 for both CentOS and Fedora. The DocumentRoot for this VirtualHost is /data/repo wherein two directories, centos and fedora, reside.

This is the .repo-file for CentOS that works like a charm:

Fedora :: No Sound With Xterm

Apr 28, 2011

I have a normal computer installed (F14, 32 bits) with a sound card correctly installed. In a normal configuration into runlevel 5, I can play sound and the sound card is visible from the gnome-volume-control window.
I should modify the computer running a naked X server (without window manager and other stuff) and two applications (an xterm and a special application managing sounds). The last application is a text based application and could run on a text console. I have the X server running because I display picture sent from another computer. Currently the computer boots on runlevel 3 and logs in automatically. If I start manually my special application, it runs fine. I create a .xinitrc script with the xterm command and I change the .bashrc calling xinit. Each application runs well independently. My problem is when I try running my special sound application from the xterm window. I have no sound. If a run the gnome-volume-control command, the program shows that no sound card is available.

I suppose the X server removes the original sound configuration of the text mode during its initialization and could not initialize correctly after that the sound card.

how it is possible to initialize the sound card manually into the X server? Do I need running some gnome command before I can call my application?

the second line runs successfully on boot, but the first line doesn't. However, after I am logged on, I can execute /etc/rc.d/rc.local and both lines will run successfully. Does the system need to be fully logged on to start the vncserver, or should I start it elsewhere other than rc.local?
