View 8 RepliesI use Linux Mint 10 and have been on Linux for about a year now. I'm no expert, but I can sort of find my way around. My problem is that I am not able to set up a LAN and share my internet connection through a crossover cable. I have a USB 3G data card for my internet connection, and getting a router for it is a mite expensive. I have a crossover cable and searching on the net led me to believe that I could do what I want to. The only problem is that I am unable to.I've got two desktops both on the same Mint 10 and when I connect them assign an IP address and gateway, my network manager shows that the connection is up, but I'm not able to ping the other system. I've even exited my firestarter firewall in case that was what was causing the problem, but I've not found a solution as yet.My knowledge of networking is at that dangerous stage where I know very little, but think I know a lot. What I've learnt about networking I've learned over the past one month when looking around for solutions to my problem but my basic understanding leaves a lot to be desired.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have SUSE 11.0 set up to act as a router/firewall for my home network to the internet through a cable modem attached to an Ethernet card. When I was laid off several years back, I found information that let me connect my network to an ISP via a standard serial modem. I am considering going to the Sprint U1901 4G USB modem and dropping cable internet. Sprint claims the U1901 is Linux compatible. My thoughts are that using the 4G modem should be similar to the old dialup modem. I had a script that connected to the internet whenever internet traffic was detected. Unfortunately, I did not save notes on what I had done to setup the modem to dial automatically, and I have been unable to locate information that seems good to set this up again. I already know that all I had to do to get routing working was simply replace the internet port in the firewall/routing script with the port for the modem. So I assume that is rather trivial.
Would you please point me to a doc, perhaps SuSE specific, that gives reasonable directions on how to set up a "dial on demand" ISP connection? I assume that the 4G modem will be very similar to my old serial modem so that a dial on demand script will work. I did find a dial on demand howto, however, it did not seem to apply.
I'm trying to build some boot and kernel images for my WD Mybook world edition, which uses an arm processor on my x86_64 host box. Ultimately i'd like to install slackarm. Lilo doesn't work on arm so you have to compile your own kernel and have the bootloader statically linked to kernel inorder to boot the OS. So i'm using my slackware install to cross compile the boot loaders (u-boot) and kernel image (uImage).
I've successfully compiled the buildroot environment which has generated the arm-linux-* binaries, eg, gcc 3.4.2 for arm.
Code:
These are in a build folder (shortened in text below), which i add to my PATH
Code:
I then move to the directory where i want to build the stage1 boot loader, which is supplied in the GPL code from WD.
Code:
However the build fails with a segfault, which looks to be caused by the incorrect libraries and compiler being used:
Code:
It seems to be using my x86_64 libs and gcc 4.4.4 which is the host compiler not the target.
I've tried setting ARCH=arm but got the same results.
Do i need to export some additional variables or unset some to prevent the host files being used instead of the targets?
I am attempting to share a folder from an existing drive that has been formatted in NTFS. I simply right click on the folder, goto share, and I can see the option to share to UNIX and that works with no problems. My question is; why is the SAMBA sharing dialog grayed out?

I have recently downloaded and installed ubuntu 10.4, and I am finding it impossible to connect to the Internet.
I connect to the Internet through an Ethernet cable. My university (Tuebingen, Germany) provides the Internet through this server:
http://10.196.128.11/upload/custom/green/welcome.html (English link).
When I open my browser in windows vista (I have a duel-boot system), my browser (Firefox) automatically goes to this page, and I log in, and am able to then use the Internet.
Ubuntu also searches for this 10.196.128.11 server, but it continually states "waiting for server to respond". I have checked all the settings I could find in windows and compared them to the ones in ubuntu, and they seem to be identical to me. I am using firefox in ubuntu too so I cannot understand the problem.
I am using Ubuntu Server version 10.4, and am trying to connect to the internet via an ethernet cable. This may and probably is incredibly simple, however, I could not find anything that pertains to it.

I am using a cable modem wired to my PC via ethernet. My ISP is Road Runner, through Time Warner Cable.
I entered my IP address, Netmask, and DNS Servers into the network, not using DHCP. This was how I was able to achieve a network connection.
I am connected to the modem, but I cannot get internet.
Here are my stats:
OpenSuse 11.4 Asus Netbook 1000H Following other members in the forums I have installed Opensuse 11.4 on the Netbook. In the early days Ubuntu Netbook Remix worked well for me. But this has been discarded, and the "one size fits all" Ubuntu had become slow and cumbersome. So..... onto my post. Opensuse is working well. The install went beautifully.
It detected the Wireless Internet and I am able to get on line. I also need to share the Internet connection to a desktop. This is done via a small network switch. Thus far I cannot do this. I tried to use ifup to configure a static ip but this busted my Wireless configuration. I went back to knetwork manager. Then I tried to set up the wired network using knetwork manager and under IPV4 "share" the connection. But this blanks out any possiblity of a static address and substitutes dhcp. My desktop cannot ping the this dhcp address. Ubuntu had this thing called Firestarter? - from memory. This configured the system to sharing the network.
I have an old desktop computer that I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on. I also have a laptop with Windows 7 Pro which is connected wirelessly to the internet. The desktop does not have a wireless card and the modem is in another room. I have a spare ethernet cable, is it possible to connect the Ubuntu desktop to the internet by connecting it to the laptop with the cable? I'm not very good with computers. If this isn't possible, how would I go about connecting the desktop to the internet?

how I could file share, or make the whole Hard Drive (HDD) accessible to another computer. The two other computers I have are a Toshiba Laptop with Ethernet and USB, and a iMac Intel with Firewire, USB, and Ethernet. Putting these to use along with:
Three Ethernet Cables
Two Printer Peripheral USB Cables
The Two Computers
A 2GB Flash Drive
That is all I can think of right now. I do not want to use CDs. In a way, I would like to do a network boot. So, how do I get the whole HDD visible to the others computers (either/both) and be able to write to it? I want to put Xubuntu on it, and earse the rest of the Hard Drive. The computers getting this are the iMac G3s and the eMac G4. The eMac has 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 700MHz processor. Two iMacs have 128MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 600MHz Processor. The other iMac is the same as the rest but has a 500MHz processor.
