Software :: Samba Refuses To Start On Startup - But Will Start Manually
Apr 14, 2009I just moved my / from sda1 to an ide drive, hde1. i dont see how this could have caused any of these issues, but it did.
First my network card failed to start. i added a line in my rc.local file (where i put all of my additional programs, etc i want to start):/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1
The above now starts my network card with my static ip configured. dhcpcd also worked but i wanted this static.
Now samba will not start. i have the following line in my rc.local: /etc/rc.d/init.d/samba start
This used to work just fine. at first i thought that samba may be trying to start before my network card gets an ip, but the line is *after* the network startup line. just to make sure, i made an additional script called startsamba which contained a sleep 60 followed by samba start, to delay the startup of samba even further.
The message samba reports is very vague, something like failed - core dumped. most of the core dump log is garbage characters, but here is the beginning which seems like it might contain some info:

ERROR: Can't log to stdout (-S) unless daemon is in foreground (-F) or interactive (-i) after the system starts, i can drop to a console and type "/etc/rc.d/init.d/samba start" and the service starts just fine. i've also tried starting samba manually with "smbd -d" which also produces the core dump when started from rc.local, but not when started from a console after startup.

Nov 4, 2009I used samba on FedoraCore2 before...and now i cannot config the same on FC10. I cannot start the service smb ( /etc/init.d/smb restart or service smb restart ) those commands dont work. How can i do to config samba service.

May 23, 2011I get "unable to open file: /etc/samba/dhcp.conf" messages in /var/log/samba/log.* worked perfectly fine in 11.3. permissions are 755 on /etc/samba and all files are 644 or 600 in the directory. Starting manually gives same result. My 11.2 and 11.3 machines continue to work. this is a weird one and I don't see any posts relating to this. For other uses, the machine seems ok.

Feb 15, 2010Up until a couple days ago, samba server worked perfectly. I don't remember doing anything with it except adding another share or two. I can still run SWAT, even from remote computers, but I still have the problem of starting the samba server itself.
#./rc.samba start

/usr/sbin/nmbd -D
#./rc.samba restart
smbd: no process killed

After issuing the "start" option, I go into SWAT and the status page says samba's not running.

Jan 24, 2010After my update to 9.10 I had not notice that CUPS, Samba, lighttpd (and maybe other serives that I've not missed until now) don't start up during system start no longer. After all, things look quite normal in the directory /etc/rc3.d, which has the appropriate links S20samba, S20lighttpd and S50cups, all of them working when I use them directly. But wait! Ubuntu uses updstart now, does it? I have yet to understand what that means to the classic startup scripts in /etc/init.d.

Jul 26, 2010I've been trying to install samba the last couple days, every time I do apt-get install samba it says that its the latest version but there's no samba folder in /etc/ and when I try /etc/init.d/samba start (or stop or restart) I get no such file or directory errors.
I've tried apt-get --purge remove samba to remove it and then reinstall but it does nothing and after the reinstall I'm still left with the above problem.

Aug 14, 2010Using 10.04. I use one machine mostly as a printer server: If it goes down for whatever reason I want to restart without having to enter any password. Samba seems to start and allow file shares, but does not start the printer sharing so I must manually enter "sudo restart smbd" to allow the printer sharing. From reading the various threads I guess that the samba "start command" is before the printers are "initialized" and thus are not "setup". So how can I make the samba "startup" last after everything else? I am not enough familiar with all of the commands to understand the thread posting to make it work.

Oct 12, 2010I have a GUI for Samba already as it most likely installed, the problem is I don't have a shared folder in admin menu. I have told samba what folder to share and what user to have access to it. As well I have looked at the config file to make sure what was in the gui printed into the config file. However I cannot start, stop, restart samba via command line. I will try config package and hopefully that drops down everything,

Now it is installed, but has no script file or the script file is not in the init.d folder like it should be still trying to figure I have come to the conclusion that the daemons are not installed and am trying to figure out what those script files look like or a way to import them off a ftp, however no luck with google so far. But the scripts files don't exist on my box. how do you install samba daemons when it says samba is already installed.

Mar 18, 2010I wish to prevent the samba messages (mainly nmbd and winbindd) from appearing in the system log (/var/log/messages). I want to allow samba logging to the standard samba logfiles, but prevent the syslog getting clogged up by samba. I added syslog = 0 to smb.conf and reloaded the config but the messages were still appearing. I also tried the following (and restarted the syslog via /sbin/service syslog restart) # Suppress messages from samba.
nmbd.* /dev/null
smbd.* /dev/null
winbindd.* /dev/null
For interests sake the messages I'm getting are below (I'm not concerned about the messages themselves, I can chase them up at my leisure via the samba logs) Mar 18 09:58:29 SERVER nmbd[3808]: query_name_response: Multiple (2) responses received for a query on subnet xx.yy.z.zz for name DOMAIN<1d>. when i am using win xp to logon on samba domain the windows XP does not load profiles from samba. I think that the problem is NTUSER.DAT storing in /home/user/profile
The same profile is working using samba 2.2.8 but not working in samba 3.5.3..

Jul 17, 2010I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.

Nov 4, 2009I'm using my Linux (SLES 10) server as a File Server at this point. I need to set File Permissions to nested folders differently to different groups. For example:
homesharedengineering* should be read only for groupA
homesharedengineeringadmin should be read & write for groupB Plus read only for groupA
homesharedengineeringautocad should be read & write for groupC Plus read only for groupA
I've been using Webmin and Putty to set permissions but Putty only allows me the Default Group, it won't allow me to set several groups on the same directory. Webmin seems to allow me to add multiple groups (Webmin --> Others --> File Manager --> Info & ACL tab will provide extended abilities) but when I add multiple groups, they don't seem to take effect? I'm wondering if my setup at the 'Share' level or at the hierarchy of my folder structure (unix based) needs to be set specifically?

CentOS 5 :: Update Samba At Least To Samba 3.0.37?
Jun 7, 2010I had installed Centos 5.4 , then upgraded to 5.5 hoping that new version has samba 3.5.x. However the updated Centos 64-bit 5.5 also has Samba 3.0.33-3.28.el5.
How can I update samba at least to Samba 3.0.37 ? The reason is, there seems to be security concerns on samba website, and I wish, at least update to latest 3.0.x .
