I have a Samba server running on Slackware 13.0 and its service running with diskspace mounted on a Windows XP machine. Is it possible to mount the XP diskspace on the Samba server?
View 3 RepliesI want to setup a Linux File Server for a small windows network (around 50 users). I do know that I am gona need Smb service/pkg for that. I haven't used Samba for a while now and as per the best of my knowledge, entire communication (including usernames and passwords) between a samba server & windows client machines will be plain text. Is there any way to secure all this communication??
Secondly, if i remember correctly, MS windows wont let me mount more than one samba shares as network disk when all my shares can be accessed by different smb users with different passwords?? is there a solution to this problem? OR may be if there is any other package available for this purpose so that i wont have to use samba?
I am not able to configure nfs mounted disk for shareing samba. i have a server X. which configure samba for windows XP client this is done. now i have export X server samba share disk to mount Y server using nfs. this is mount and ok. but i don't share this disk using Y server samba configure.

I have been able to figure out Samba enough to get my a couple of folders shared, but I have been unable to share any folders which are on my external harddrive. After entering the path in my smb.conf file they appear on the network but I am unable to navigate to them. When trying to navigate to them through the network folder on the pc they are actually connected to I get an "Unable to mount location: Failed to mount windows share" dialog box. On the windows pc I am trying to share with I get, "Windows cannot acces \Josh-Desktop

Actually i want to take a back of windows xp's users data which on d: or etc and that backup i want to store in samba share which i made on my centos 5.4 . To do this we need to mount samba share as local drive then any script or any software can detect that share easily in that drive.
I spent all day learning some concepts of Samba which I left while preparing for RHCE.One of them is how to permanently mount (fstab entry) windows shared folder.Manually mount command is running fine for me.

Firewall off (utf disabled)
Internal Sata /dev/sda1 (EXT4 FS)
External USB HDD /dev/sdb1 mounted at /media/SG1500GB (EXT4 FS)
I have two shares
1. //home/test - Which I can see and access with no problems (can't write to it though even though I set the share as writable?, but, I can read from it). This is available to everyone. My windows terminal can see this folder and access it. This is on my main 80GB internal drive /dev/sda1.
2. //media/SG1500GB/Music. I set this up for everyone full access and I can see it at all my Windows machines but,I can't get into the folder. Windows keeps giving me an error stating network path not found.I also try to access it via the Nautilus (Places/Network/system/music) and get an error message "unable to mount location, Failed to mount windows share". This drive is mounted per the disk utility.
I'm having an issue with a Samba server running on an Ubuntu "server". Technically, it's not a server, it's just an old desktop with Ubuntu 10.04 running it..and I have a few server processes running (ProFTP, Samba, etc.)The Ubuntu server is where I store all of my important files that get backed up to a separate hard drive. I shared folders via Samba, and I use two computers to access the shares. I access the shares with an .sh file I created that uses the mount cifs command to mount to those shares.
It has been working flawlessly for a long long time, up until recently. For the past few days to a week, I will try to mount the shares with no result. In the terminal, the commands just freeze, as if the command is trying to execute, but having network issues.The only way I can get it to work is if I reboot the Ubuntu server, then it maps flawlessly. But a day later, it's back to hanging up when trying to mount.
I'm using CentOS 5.5 with smbclient 3.0.33-3.28-el5 (latest version in repo), and I can't overwrite files in my Samba store. I am not the admin for the Windows server that hosts the share, so there isn't anything I can do server side. But I do have write permission to the server. I know the server runs Windows XP or Server 2003; I don't know which. I can delete the file, and then copy the new version over, but I can't overwrite it. Using the cp command I'll get this error:
[jonescb@localhost ~]$ cp foo.txt /mnt/si_storage/foo.txt
cp: cannot create regular file `/mnt/si_storage/foo.txt': No such file or directory`
And if I edit a file on the server using vim, I can save it once, but if I save it again I get this: "/mnt/si_storage/foo.txt" E212: Can't open file for writing This is my /etc/fstab entry for the samba server: //192.168.1.2/SI_STORAGE /mnt/si_storage cifs username=myuser,password=mypass 0 0 I can overwrite files just fine on my XP machine. The CentOS box is the only one having problems.
I have a cluster of linux boxes that authenticate with ldap, and a few windows boxes. I have been asked to make the windows boxes mount or map one of the linux partitions on the server.Any ideas or search terms that could shortcut the research process on this would be great.

Bringing shared folders over from Windows (on another computer) is not a problem...until I try same process with a Windows backup folder holding .tib data from an 'Acronis' backup.The files appear in Ubuntu Network, everything looks o.k., Ubuntu just won't copy the data to another folder. Other shares work without a problem, its only with these ':.tib' data.

However, I'm not able to handle this issue. I recently installed F11 and everything went well. But, when trying to see my other computers on the local network, I cannot. I receive this error message: Unable to mount location Failed to receive shared list from server. I understand the message as it is obvious, but do not know how to fix it.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI cannot access my Ubuntu samba server using windows XP or 7. I keep getting prompted for a username/password. I have created both a unix username with password and a samba username with the same password i used for the unix user. When windows prompts me for the username/password i give it the same one i created on the samba server, but it still will not take it. I know samba is running because i can view the shares but cannot access them without getting prompted for username/password. I just have the one user for now while i am testing, but there will be more.
I am using Ubuntu Desktop 10.04.
We are running samba on a Fedora release 8 (werewolf). The samba server is located on a dmz subnet off of my Cisco ASA 5510 firewall. From my inside network I have no problems connecting to the samba shares. However when someone uses a VPN connection they cannot connect to the samba share. VPN users are assigned an address from a pool which has no problems getting to the dmz based samba server. All ports required are open on both firewalls (Samba server and PC with VPN connection.) I consistently get an error saying Windows cannot find the ip address of the samba server. I have looked at the samba logs in varlogssamba and found a complete list of connection attempts listed by ip address. These addresses match the pool addresses that are being assigned by the firewall when someone tries to connect using the vpn.
Each entry has this:
lib/access.c:check_access(327)
connection denied from (ip address that is assigned by firewall)
smdb/process.crocess_smb(1062)
connection denied from (ip address that is assigned by firewall)
I checked the smb.conf to make sure the subnet the pool addreses is listed in the global section. It is.
Start>Run>\192.168.0.1storage gives me "The specified network password is not correct." It lists my domain as "ANTEC" which is the name of my computer, though I've changed the workgroup to WELLS. I've run:
setsebool -P samba_domain_controller on

However, when attempting to access them from ubuntu, only 2 of the 4 hard disk shares will mount, with the other 2 failing with a Unable to mount location, failed to mount windows share error message.

I haven't test it with windows xp station but I have use the same code in the past with no problems, and since this is my first time joining windows 7 station i belive there must be some other port that need fowarding.
I use F10 at home and while away from work on my laptop. Recently I could get the VPN sorted out ( I can now connect to the vpn (ppp0) server at work from home or anywhere else). I am trying to mount a windows folder that is on the work server on my F10 box at home through the VPN connection that is first established.What I know about the windws server

I think the VPN connection is established successfully. I have a ppp0 connection under ifconfig with an IP address after vpn connection is established.In windows I just map the network drive (\pxxxxhome) username=abcd, password=xxxx and mount the folder as "abcd on pxxxxhome"
I'm trying to connect to the other computers on the network in my house, but, when I try to view the main file folders it tells me "unable to mount location: failed to mount windows share" I've looked everywhere I can think of and have done everything they've told me to do, and I still can't get it to work.

Using the following command, I can access a windows 2008 server: rdesktop -u myusername -d mydomain -p - -fP -r sound:local -r disk:myhome=/home/myhome serveraddress
connection works fine, and to start with I can see my local disk "\tsclientmyhome" and navigate around + open files. If I try to delete a file or rename a folder, I get an Error 0x8007048F:The device is not connected.
After this, I can no longer access the local disk. It says: "\tsclientmyhome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Attempt to access invalid address." As I understand it, I should be contacting myself about permissions... Can anyone tell me what I need to do on my local ubuntu machine to fix this?

I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.
I have beating my brains out trying to get Lucid Lynx connected to an SME Server 7.4 to automatically mount windows shares. The winbind stuff seems to work okay after I installed a restart script in /etc/network/if-up.d (kudos to OsGnuru & bobpaul for that) There is a short wait on network up before winbind can validate but that is not a show stopper. I have looked at (what I think) is the correct log for pam_mount and it seems to be running through to the end process okay. It looks like it is either not reading the pam_mount.conf.xml file or I have not configured it correctly as it just reports "No Volumes to Mount". I have appended the log file, pam_mount auth, password, session & common conf files as well as the pam_mount.conf.xml file for review.

In the command, I am also using the -o option to specify a username and password that should have full access. Also, I have used this identical command on my other distros and it seems to work fine. I've Googled high and low, trying to find a way to specify a Samba user/password for authentication. I know one of the other distros had a program that I could specify a Samba user/password to simulate a Windows login.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm new to setting up Linux Servers. I've setup a Ubuntu 10.10 Server along with CUPS and I'm using Webmin to talk to the server. I have a HP PSC 1315 Multifunction printer connected via usb to the server. Using the CUPS web interface I am able to get the server to detect the connected printer and it identified the HP PSC 1310 Series drivers.
When I printer a test page from the server's screen the print job goes through ok and the size was about 5k.
I then setup a samba share to allow my Windows 7 machine to share the printer. Windows 7 is able to pick up the shared printer correctly and I used the default HP 1310 Series drivers. When I tried to send a test page to the printer, that single page ended up being 3887kb and I also tried printing out a single paged word document which ended up being over 7MB.
