Slackware :: Resize The Windows Such As Xterm And Firefox?
Jan 11, 2011Just can't resize xterm or any windows such as firefox. In xterm it seems using the button in the up-right corner could resize the window's width, not height.

View 4 RepliesI'd try here first, since I am running slackware, though it's a firefox problem ... To verify bug, just go into a KDE konsole xterm, and do
[13:35 ~]$ mkdir ~/ffbug
[13:35 ~]$ touch ~/ffbug/_$'31'_
[13:35 ~]$ firefox file://$(echo ~)/ffbug &
(This assumes you didn't already have a ~/ffbug directory, and you have firefox 3.5.6 installed -- the prior firefox id not have this problem) What you will probably see is firefox trying to display a listing of the ~/ffbug directory, but instead showing an error message: XML Parsing Error: not well-formed. I posted this in the mozillazine forum, where it got read 20 times, but no response.
Start xpdf or gv. Click an xterm to be active and slide it over xpdf/gv. Vertical lines from xpdf/gv under the xterm stick to the xterm window above and make it unreadable.
The problem does NOT show with KDE default settings with display effects on but does show in fvwm, xfce etc, and in KDE without effects.
On a system with a Sandy Bridge integrated graphics (i5-2400) the problem went away by downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.13.0. But it was not enough for another system with 945G which needed downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.12.0.
when I resize an xterm in fvwm, bash word wrapping is messed up. I don't know if it's from running a program that uses curses or not.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have RAR archive including some files using Russian file names and I?m unable to display them properly in xterm window in my Slackware 13.1. Instead of the Cyrillic letters I see questions marks, for example ??.txt?.I tried four methods:
Code:
xterm -en iso-8859-5 -fn -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--15-140-75-75-c-90-iso8859-5
xterm -en koi8-r -fn -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--15-140-75-75-c-90-koi8-r
[code]...
xterm is scanning lines one by one.It takes time.I did jumpScroll: true ,but it results same. But rxvt is better comparing this. Where would i get the global configuration file for rxvt and xterm?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to turn on the system bell (pc speaker) in xterm. I have the bell working in console (text mode, not under X), and with X running, even firefox can use the pc speaker (it beeps, when I enter a search term which is not found). Only xterm doesn't seem to work.
Here is my xterm config, and the xset command I'm trying to use to turn the bell on:
-------###--------
xterm*renderFont: true
xterm*faceName: Terminus
xterm*faceSize: 12
xterm*loginShell: true
!xterm*Geometry: 102x48+0+0
xterm*Geometry: 102x48
xterm*scrollBar: false
xterm*background: black
xterm*foreground: white
!xterm*highlightColor: red
xterm*charClass: 46-47:48
xterm*visualBell: false
-------###--------
xset b on
xset bell 100 1000 1000
-------###--------
If I run xterm with the +vb option, it doesn't help either (I'm testing it with printf "a"). What am I missing? How can I make xterm use my pc speaker as bell?
Just upgrading to 13.0, and one thing I had in KDE 3.5 was a larger (normal) sized xterm, and a smaller sized one. The small sized ones are handy for CL scripts and don't chew up as much screen-estate.
I know I can change defaults in .xinitrc, but I don't know how to make a widget for the small xterm.
I'm having a problem with vim and xterm. When I open a file and press any key, the colour scheme changes slightly. This doesn't happen if I run a 256-colour xterm (export TERM='xterm-256color') but if TERM is set to 'xterm' (the default) I see the colour change. Setting TERM='xterm-256color' in my ~/.bashrc is a "solution", but I'd rather not have to do that since it's never been necessary in the past (e.g., on 13.1) and I don't use any 256-color schemes for vim (usually just the default or possibly "delek"). It doesn't happen with rxvt or with Xfce's terminal. I've tried compiling some other versions of xterm but they either exhibit the same behaviour or don't build. I have tried running without any ~/.vimrc file just to be sure it wasn't one of my settings and I've also tried the sample file at /usr/share/vim/vimrc; the effect is the same.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have the following line in my .Xresources, and it only works when I'm not running KDE:
Code:
XTerm*reverseVideo: true When I start up XTerm in Xfce, TWM, or any other window manager, I get the expected black background. When I launch XTerm in KDE, I get a white background, meaning that the reverseVideo setting is not taking effect. When I'm in KDE, launching XTerm with -rv does give me an XTerm with a black background. Obviously, having to add this switch every time I launch an XTerm in KDE is suboptimal, no matter how you try to automate it. Manually running xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources and then launching XTerm immediately afterwards does not make a difference.
If you're wondering why this is a concern, it's because all 256-color vim color schemes (xoria256, desert256, inkpot) require reverseVideo to be set so that XTerm launches with a black background. You get a black-on-black cursor otherwise.
I've read about this. Everyone says to use ~/.Xresources or ~/.Xdefaults, and it doesn't work for me. It doesn't do anything at all, in fact. I'm trying to use this:
Code:
XTerm*background: black
XTerm*foreground: white
In the ~/.X* files, it won't work. I read that another way of doing it is using
Code:
xrdb -merge .x_settings_file
This will work for me. It's the only thing I can get to work. But when I restart, it will have to be done again. I'm using Slackware 12.2.
i have fluxbox and i need to know how to copy things in xterm and paste them outside of xterm.

It used to be my 'go to distro' when I trashed my Slackware installation. Now, I have Slax on a USB and I think that is enough.Mint 10 occupies /dev/sda5 (root) and /dev/sda6 (home) while Slackware occupies /dev/sda7 (root) and /dev/sda8 (home). If I delete the /dev/sda5 & /dev/sda6 partitions, can I very safely resize /dev/sda7 and /dev/sda8 to use the space freed up?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am using an Asus 1000HE with a 10 inch screen.
I just installed Fedora 11 with Gnome.
Windows often go beyond the edge of the screen so I cannot see everything that is in the window or press buttons when I need to.
I know I can drag the windows around with [Alt] but that is not a longterm solution.
So how do I resize windows to fit the screen ?
i will occasionally open a gui program, for example an ip address calc and a dvd burning program, and the bottom of the window is cut off by the screen; the screen size is put on the most applicable, detectable screen size; on both a netbook with a small rectangular screen and an older desktop with CRT monitor that is square; i could see both of these having issues beyond my own user-stupidity, so i thought i would ask: how do i get to the bottom of the window to see very crucial info? i hover the mouse on the top until it changes to a horiz bar, but it wont drag down;
- i hover mouse on bottom but it wont change to bar/arrow;
- i hover on corners to make an angle bar/arrow but it will only resize horizontally;
- i right click the top border and hit "resize" but it will only resize horizontally;
this, as well as getting my touchpad settings to stay the same after poweroff have been the bane of my existence edit: sometimes these posts are simply echo chambers for me to listen to my own ineptitude; i found how to save the touchpad settings,re-edit: i did not actually fix the touchpad, but i have posted elsewhere so as to not cross-post.
On Ubuntu, Alt key + mouseScroll click is resizing the current window. Can i get that on Xubuntu somehow (or should i say on XFCE)?
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo when I upgraded to Slack64 13.1 on my asus MB homebrewed desktop and Slack 13.1 on my compaq presario a900 laptop, I started having issues with the xterm title (in Terminal--not Konsole) being too dynamic. By "too dynamic" I mean that I can't actually change the title. The dynamic title (from my .bashrc) is basically just pwd. Whenever I try to set the title (via terminal->set title (menu)), I changes it for a split second, and then reverts back to the dynamic title.
This is merely a petty annoyance, so to get around it, I added an xtitle function that I grabed somewhere online (just echos "33]0;$*07"). So for nano-ing some file, I'd type:xtitle some_file.txt; nano some_file.txt
That works just fine (kind of annoying to type though). running xtitle alone won't actually change the name either though (I'm pretty sure it's the same command as what terminal does anyway). That is, running: xtitle some_file.txt
changes the title for a split second, and the reverts back to my old pwd. What I really want is to have it dynamically name it "some_file.txt" whenever I use nano, but that appears to be a functionality of zsh (with the preexec() fxn).I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if you have a fix for it.
I am trying to install Debian for my best friend by resizing his Windows partition so that I can install Debian on a separate partition. But, I get this message when I try to resize Windows: "for some unknown reason impossible to resize this partition. Check /var/log/syslog or see virtual console 4 for details." I do not know how to check virtual console 4 for details and besides I won't be able to interpret it. I also tried defraging the Windows hard drive several times and using several livecds with GParted to try to resize. They all failed.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just installed Fedora 15 on a new laptop and I am using the Genome desktop. There are some applications that will not the allow you to resize the window. Some examples of this are Libre Calc, gnome-tweak-tool and a window in the package installer. In all these cases when you right mouse click on the top of the active window the "Resize ALT-F8" is grayed out and is not selectable. This is real problem when I'm trying to install the Perl-IDE-for-vim package because the list of dependencies is so long the confirm button is off the bottom of the screen and I cannot resize the window to get to it. There is also a similar issue with the tweak tool where some of the field are chopped off because the window is too small. As for Libre Calc I just don't like a window taking up the whole desktop.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThe openSUSE 11.2 installation disk doesn't want to let me resize my NTFS-based WinXP partition; it just says that the fs is inconsistent and that I should check this issue in windows... But even though I've scheduled diskcheck to run after a reboot, it doesn't! Is there some way of "forcing" the diskcheck to run upon startup, or how else can I resolve this issue (without re-installing my entire system)?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using the last Debian Lenny (506) + the last ATI Privative Driver (10.9) + Compiz + Gnome, and, I have a great Slow Resize windows problem. When I try to resize a window (Alt + middle click) is very very, VERY!! slow. I try to find the solution browsing. After search
and read forums and threads about this, couldn't find it
I did an upgrade to F15 from F13. I was a little skeptical about the upgrade (I had always reinstalled in the past), but so far it seems to have worked great. What were people thinking when they released Gnome? No minimize of resize buttons for all windows (I downloaded the F15 updates today, and there doesn't seem to be any updates to fix the situation). Ridiculous. Who did any testing on this? Once a fix was found for that, I find Gnome to be non intuitive and inefficient regarding response time and user key strokes required.
View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently I decided to give Ubuntu 10.04 a try and I didn't like it + some drivers were really buggy so I deleted the partition. I can't boot. I covered the process of how I fixed it on my blog here. Anyhow, now I'd like to expand my windows partition as there's 175gb of unallocated space. The problem is gparted won't let me expand it (trying this via liveCD). I've tried mounting/unmounting it's no luck.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running out of disk space, so I decided to resize Windows 7 on my first hard drive, so I could add another ext4 partition to put data on. However, gparted threw an error during the resize, and left with me a un-bootable Windows 7 partition. Windows 7 gets up to about where the login screen appears, but then BSODs and reboots. Unfortunately, the bsod is so fast, that I cannot see any details. Windows 7 recovery mode cannot fix the issue. When I try to repair the disk in gparted I get this error:
ERROR: Current NTFS volume size is bigger than the device size!
Corrupt partition table or incorrect device partitioning? I have attached my gparted_details log files, in a zipped folder.
I am running a dual boot with XP and Ubuntu - what I want to do is increase the partition size of Ubuntu and reduce XP. When I run " G Parted" it shows both partitions with Xp being NTFS. I guess the boot loader is Grub because Ubuntu takes priority at Boot. I cannot persuade G Parted to allow me to resize the two different partitions. I am using the G Parted Live CD.
