Slackware :: Powertop Shows Enormous Activity Hrtimer_start_range_ns?
Jan 19, 2010
Was wondering if this is normal. I have a laptop which is about a year old. Recently my battery died (it last 10-15 minutes instead of 3-4 hours as it was before). I ordered a new one. While waiting for the new one I started to investigate power consumers (processes) on my machine. I run slackware64-current. with 2.6.33-rc4-git7 kernel. config - is slightly modified config-generic from -current. I attach t here for any case. Here is the output of powertop:
Code:
PowerTOP version 1.11 (C) 2007 Intel Corporation
Cn Avg residency P-states (frequencies)
C0 (ЦП работает) ( 9,0%) 2,27 ГГц 2,6%
[code]...
How can I decrease number of wakeups?

I see these activities logged on a fairly regular basis in /var/log/auth.log and was wondering if this is normal activity?
firefox: gethostby*.getanswer: asked for "ftp.cs.rose-hulman.edu IN A", got type "DNAME"
The format is always the same, though sometimes the address is a regular Internet site.

The only window that's open is the terminal running this command, no pidgin, skype, samba, torrent or anything I can think of is using the network yet there is ***** load of output from tcpdump. I was hoping to use this to check where certain applications connect to and what messages they send but when I'm doing nothing there is already more output than I can go through. Running tcpdump for less than 10 seconds gives me the following output:

How can I track down what's using my nic and kill it (if appropriate). There are no applications running which might be authorized to send and receive packages, so I don't really know why the System Monitor shows network activity.

I tried to do a scheduled software update several times today (8/20/11) and nothing seems to download, though I do get the "Downloading" PackageKit dialog message (the System Monitor shows practically no network activity). In between tries I downloaded some 600 MB .iso files (about 10 minutes each) so I know my internet is working properly. That leaves either PackageKit got hosed in my last update, or servers are down.

Compaq N600c w/ Slack 13 loaded...it's an older workhorse that began behaving oddly after the user dl'd a background image for her desktop...on login, the laptop would spawn hundreds of terminals once producing a load avg of 40.5 -never seen that before- as well on shutdown and startup I start seeing the appearance of the following characters ^[[[D repeated hundreds if not thousands of times on the screen, boot and shutdown will progress to completion but it's unintended behaviour, therefore suspect in my mind.hd thorough self-test passed and memtest is not showing errors on it's second pass

Prior to installing F11, I used fwbackups to archive some data to a bzip2 tarball. The archiving and compression went just fine. When I attempt to decompress the archive bunzip2 chokes with the following error:
Code:
bunzip2: Compressed file ends unexpectedly;
perhaps it is corrupted? *Possible* reason follows.
bunzip2: No such file or directory
Input file = Backup-stuff-archive-2009-06-14_01-00.tar.bz2, output file = Backup-stuff-archive-2009-06-14_01-00.tar
It is possible that the compressed file(s) have become corrupted. You can use the -tvv option to test integrity of such files. You can use the `bzip2recover' program to attempt to recover data from undamaged sections of corrupted files. bunzip2: Deleting output file Backup-stuff-archive-2009-06-14_01-00.tar, if it exists. Now I'm fairly sure that the problem is a couple of zero length files (dead pipes or the like) have been included in the tarball and it seems that GNU tar and allied tools are braindamaged when it comes to zero length files in an archive, treating them as end of file markers. I've had this issue with a gzipped tarball. Alas bzip2recover is not an option as the archive is 106.1 gigabytes in size (I know, I know) and to handle a file of this size it requires recompiling.
Googling for an answer returns grim news. It seems that tarballs like this are forever borked. I was wondering if any of the gurus here can offer some advice. Can my poor Shrek of a tarball be salvaged or is he a hopeless case? The lesson I have learned is not to create HUGE archives. Also using tools like tar and bzip (or even gzip) may not the best idea when archiving/backing up.

I'm running Slackware 13 with a custom kernel based off of 2.6.32.3. I tend to leave my system on 24/7, as well as my web browser. Originally it was Firefox and now it is Google's Chrome. Usually about a day of leaving the web browser open my HD activity spikes so high that I can barely do anything on the system until I kill the web browser. This has been happening with both Firefox AND Chrome! As soon as the browser processes are killed, the system returns back to normal.

I've been running arch linux, with my clock set to UTC with no problem. Recently I installed slackware on a different partition. During the setup I chose to set my clock to 'local time' instead of UTC by accident. Now in slackware my clock shows the wrong time. Also in arch it shows the same wrong time.
I booted back into slackware and ran pkgtool to enter the setup again, and changed my time to UTC. But this makes no difference. My clock is still wrong in both slackware and arch. Do I need to reboot after changing my clock settings in slackware before it takes effect? how the clock or the setup works.

I installed Powertop after reading a number of threads of threads about power consumption issues in Lucid. Though it would be good to know what I was doing. But when I run Powertop it tells me "now ACPI power usage estimate available".

I was reading the forum yesterday, and saw a thread about powertop. Needless to say I tried it on my Toshiba NB305, and thought it might be good to see if I could also get better power usage from my wife's Toshiba A665. The problem is that when I run it on her laptop, it just totally hangs the system, and the caps lock light just sits there blinking. I am not sure why. Is it not designed for x64 systems? Any ideas, or similar problems? I think this laptop has an Intel i5 540M processor, and I am running Ubuntu 10.04x64 kernel version 2.6.32-29-generic.

I've ran "powertop" on my computer and it showed horrible amount of wake-ups per second:
Code:
Cn Avg residency P-states (frequencies)
C0 (cpu running) (26.7%) 2.81 Ghz 100.0%
polling 0.0ms ( 0.0%) 1400 Mhz 0.0%
C1 16.2ms (60.5%) 1050 Mhz 0.0%
C2 0.0ms (12.8%) 700 Mhz 0.0%
350 Mhz 0.0%
Wakeups-from-idle per second : 63944.8 interval: 5.0s
no ACPI power usage estimate available
Top causes for wakeups:
45.1% ( 15.6) <interrupt> : pata_atiixp
26.0% ( 9.0) <kernel core> : hrtimer_start_range_ns (tick_sched_timer)
9.2% ( 3.2) <kernel core> : hrtimer_start (tick_sched_timer)
5.8% ( 2.0) <kernel core> : add_timer_on (clocksource_watchdog)
1.7% ( 0.6) <interrupt> : ohci_hcd:usb4, radeon, yenta
1.7% ( 0.6) Xorg : queue_delayed_work (delayed_work_timer_fn)
Suggestion: increase the VM dirty writeback time from 5.00 to 15 seconds with:
Echo 1500 > /proc/sys/vm/dirty_writeback_centisecs
This wakes the disk up less frequently for background VM activity
Q - Quit R - Refresh W - Increase Writeback time
If I wait it decreases to 50000, but it is still huge!
Situation is duplicated after complete F12 re-install. All defaults are used and no changes performed after install. Just checked again and let computer run idle for a while. Powertop reports 79604 wake-up per second, even more than before. Again, the top cause is "pata_atiixp". Also, performing suggestions of powertop shown at the bottom of the program does not help either. That decreases wake-up by a few hundreds only. Wake-ups are still well over 50000.

Judging by the number of responses (close to zero) to other threads about powertop on this forum, I have little hope in getting any answers. However, I do not know where else could I ask. PowerTop tell me that even after applying almost all the tips and tricks from lesswatts.org, my laptop still consumes over 72 Watts while idling.
Code:
< Detailed C-state information is not P-states (frequencies)
1.60 Ghz 0.0%
800 Mhz 100.0%
Wakeups-from-idle per second : 451.1 interval: 10.0s
Power usage (5 minute ACPI estimate) : 72.5 W (0.3 hours left)
Top causes for wakeups:
[Code]...
Suggestion: Enable USB autosuspend by pressing the U key or adding usbcore.autosuspend=1 to the kernel command line in the grub config This is when I am not touching the laptop. When I am surfing the web or listen to music, it goes up to 2000+ wakeups! How do I cut it further? I am getting like 20-30 minutes max on battery and this is unacceptable cause in Windows I get at least 3 times that.

i'm installing slack 13.1 on a friend's machine, and ran into what i would not call a bug, but more of an oversight. when selecting a desktop activity type, i must have definitely clicked the wrong item. i got a group of icons in the middle of the screen corresponding to the categories in the KDE menu. it worked ok, you could click on a category and get a group of icons for the apps, and click on the app to launch it. no problem there.... but you could not revert to a regular desktop.... at all.... no amount of right clicking would bring up the popup window i used to get there, and the plasma jellybean at the corner of the screen was gone. the plasma jellybean on the panel at the bottom brought up a panel menu, but never could get back to the desktop activity selection menu. the only way to get back to square one, was to delete the .kde subdirectory in the user's root directory.

I upgraded from 13.0 to 13.1 and now I have strange behaviors with the printer. It is an Epson Stylus Photo RX640. It was working well with the vanilla Gutenprint 5.2.2 that came in Slack 13.0. The printer is shared and used from other slackware boxes and a mac. Upgrade to 13.1 (gutenprint gets to be 5.2.4) ...
Now when I print from the machine that has the printer attached I get full black pages, and cups shows errors. The Mac is still able to print well (probably because it is using its own PPD and passing through directly to the printer). I then removed gutenprint, and then removed the 5.2.2 PPDs (that were still in the system). Reinstalled gutenprint from the Slackware 13.1 distro. And the problem persists.

All clients on the LAN, have to have their /etc/hosts file edited for my server to resolve their hostnames/LAN ip addresses. Both Windows/Mac/Linux. That shouldn't be necessary as all other stanzas are correct. If the hosts file is not ammended my maillog shows connect from unknown rip="my_external_address" when in fact it should say connect from "host" rip=192.168.0.20 Not to sure if it is an iptables issue as I have nothing for this configuration. /etc/hosts file on the server has all required hostnames and ip addresses

During my last boot something installed itself that is very annoying and I would like to remove it. The upper right side of my desktop has a tab called New Activity and there is a translucent bar across the top. Now when I right click an item on my bottom task bar the menu appears at the very top of the desktop instead of opening just above the icon. This is an improvement? How do I remove this feature?
