Server :: Slackware - Hosts File Is Not Amended Maillog Shows Connect From Unknown Rip="my_external_address"

May 10, 2010

All clients on the LAN, have to have their /etc/hosts file edited for my server to resolve their hostnames/LAN ip addresses. Both Windows/Mac/Linux. That shouldn't be necessary as all other stanzas are correct. If the hosts file is not ammended my maillog shows connect from unknown rip="my_external_address" when in fact it should say connect from "host" rip=192.168.0.20 Not to sure if it is an iptables issue as I have nothing for this configuration. /etc/hosts file on the server has all required hostnames and ip addresses

Software :: "You Are Not Allowed To Connect" Messages In Maillog File?

Jun 9, 2011

I have been finding a lot of "You are Not allowed to connect" messages in my maillog file.

and the email addresses are not in my forum database. I've check my server for rootkits and there are none installed and I've also used mxtoolbox to test my server as an open relay and it says it's not an open relay. however I am seeing bounces that show 'relay' and I wonder exactly what I'm looking at and and asking for some help in identifying the nature of these emails. here's a few examples and they seem to come in 'spurts" when I'm tailing the maillog file. there's never anything waiting in the queue to be delivered.

Server :: Samba On Redhat 9.0 Shows An Unknown IP Address?

Jun 30, 2010

I am running RedHat 9.0 on a VMware on Window XP, I have bridged the network card eth0 such that
I can ping the host machine 192.168.45.67 and the Windows XP machines on my LAN.

I managed to set up the samba server on this Redhat 9.0, And I can see the netbios name on my WindowXP: Rhl machines. Now I want to reach the Windows machines vi sambaclient but I get an Ip address that is not on my network -192.168.24.1.I did not set this IP address.

This is the message I get when I run smbclient so that I can reach windows machine when I am on Redhat:

# smbclient //machine name/name of user on windows machine
added interface ip=192.168.45.90 bcast=192.168.45.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
Got a positive name query response from 192.168.45.21 (192.168.24.1 192.168.249.1 192.168.45.21
error connecting to 192.168.24.1:139 (Network unreachable)
Error connecting to 192.168.24.1 (Network is unreachable)

My question is Where does 192.168.24.1 IP address come from. Where must I look in order to remove it ( in Linux or Windowx Xp.

Server :: Postfix DNS: Why Does It Not Check Hosts File

Mar 22, 2011

I run a few virtual servers at home behind a NAT, including an e-mail server, with dynamically updated dns records pointing to each of the servers. Consequently, I suffer from the loopback problem when working with these servers from my desktop PC. (E.g., I ping one of the dns hostnames and the ping goes to my router instead of the server). I fixed this problem by manually adding the in-home IP addresses and name pairs to my /etc/hosts, and then setting /etc/host.conf to a "hosts, bind" order.

This seems to work for every application on my desktop except for one: the postfix installation on my desktop PC (used for mailing smartctl messages and so forth) cannot communicate with my in-home e-mail server (times out). I checked the logs, and it looks like it is trying to use the IP address from the actual A-RECORD, rather than the address in my hosts file.

So I'm not quite sure what to do. There seems to be a "proxy_interfaces" parameter in main.conf which might be relevant, but I think it only deals with received mail. I'd prefer to have the mail going to that e-mail server, rather than also having to check the spool on my local desktop accounts.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 'Configure Display Settings' Icon Shows Monitor As 'Unknown'

Feb 16, 2010

I've just installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on a new machine. Because I was still using another machine as my main box while building the new one, the monitor attached when it was installed has a resolution of 1280x1024 @ 77Hz. I've now moved it to be my main machine and the monitor is a widescreen 1680x1050 @ 60Hz model. When I boot it normally the screen fails to come up - even GDM doesn't show. If I boot in failsafe mode the system comes up fine, but in 1280x1024 mode. The 'Configure display settings' icon shows the monitor as 'Unknown'. Couple of things I tried:

1) Switched to runlevel 2 and logged in as root. Ran Xorg -configure and looked at the xorg.conf.new that was installed, but it just had generic info for the monitor:

[code]....

2) While still in runlevel 2 and logged in as root I did a startx. This brought up the X display in 1680x1050 ok, and clicking on the 'Configure display settings' icon showed it had correctly identified my monitor and had set the size and frequency correctly.

3) Given the results of (2), I then tried logging in as myself in runlevel 2, did startx again, but this time the display failed to come up again.

CentOS 5 Server :: Hosts File And Resolv.conf Conflict CentOS 5.5?

Apr 11, 2011

I am running an application that requires use of my /etc/hosts file. In it, I have my machine name and its LAN ip address. The program creates a service on a specific port, then attempts to connect to it based on the host name. So my hosts file has to be correct.I added the nameservers to resolv.conf and now my application will not run. My guess is that the computer is checking the name servers first, timing out then checking the hosts file.Is there a way I can tell the system to check the hosts file first, then DNS. I thought it should behave that way by default, but it does not appear to.

I booted back into slackware and ran pkgtool to enter the setup again, and changed my time to UTC. But this makes no difference. My clock is still wrong in both slackware and arch. Do I need to reboot after changing my clock settings in slackware before it takes effect? how the clock or the setup works.

Ubuntu Networking :: Vbox Guests On 2 Different Hosts Need To Connect?

Jul 15, 2011

In my home network I have two ubuntu desktops that are connected to a router. On each pc I have installed Virtual Box 3.2 and various OSes. I need to sometimes run multiple vm's at the same time which is very RAM intensive so I was wondering if there is any way to connect VM's on different hosts so that they appear they are in the same network? Various articles that show up as search results hardly pertain to what I want to do. Basically, I would like to make vm's visible in the network but on different hosts and with ip addresses that would reflect that those vm's are on a same network. Like ubuntu 1 has vm's a and b and ubuntu 2 has c and d. When I start all of the vm's, I would like them to connect to each other just like they are in the same network without "knowing" they are on different hosts.

Here's what I have now:
Code:
root@eagleswing:~# hostname
eagleswing
root@eagleswing:~# cat /etc/HOSTNAME
eagleswing.5binc

I'm not certain how to include my router in /etc/hosts so I can use it to link my PCs as stated above. I was thinking of writing (see above link):

192.168.2.1 localbelkin Will this work & is it proper?

3) Do I need to make use of any other IP addresses at this link? What are the WAN IP & Default Gateway addresses used for? I am going to be serving documents & running scripts on Apache.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Connect To .local Hosts / Websites On Company Network (DNS)?

Jun 27, 2011

Problem:Your company network has internal only hosts / websites with names that end in .local, e.g.Your freshly installed Ubuntu machine works fine on the network, has internet access, etc. but cannot connect to these particular systems.Testing DNS with tools like dig / nslookup works fine, but normal name resolution with ping / telnet / browsers does not work.Solution:1. Open a terminal window2. Enter the command sudo nano /etc/nsswitch.conf3. Change the following line:hosts: files mdns4_minimal [notfound=RETURN] dns mdns4to this:hosts: files dns4. Press Ctrl-X, Y, Enter to saveExplanation:Ubuntu ships configured to do name lookups for self-configuring networks, based on the AppleTalk / mDNS / Bonjour protocol. In the configuration shipped for the resolver, this protocol is considered the final aurhority for the ".local" top level domain, and DNS will not be checked. The above configuration change eliminates this and restricts lookups to (a) /etc/hosts file, followed by (b) DNS
