Slackware :: Gvim Autostarting -as The KDE Desktop Shows?
Mar 25, 2010
Running Slackware current and KDE4. Every time I start up, gvim autostarts as soon as the KDE desktop shows. There is no command in .kde/Autostart for this. I have ticked always start with an empty session in the session manager. I cannot see why gvim is starting every time. How can I stop this?

I'm having a strange problem with gvim. I've installed Slackware on 4 computers now, and this latest one is the first I've seen this issue on. I use the command line for almost everything, and only use gvim in Firefox with Vimperator. So it isn't something I use all the time, but when I need it I really need it. Using textboxes (like, you know, on LQ) is starting to drive me up the wall Anyway, when I load gvim (through Vimperatorr other means) the text is unreadable. It does seem to become readable after it gets covered by another window, but as I type, the new text is unreadable again. Attached is a screenshot, of this post. And, actually, I'm seeing similar behaviour in Gimp.Attached is a second screenshot. The weird lines seem to appear and disappear when the mouse rolls over the area. I don't use very many GUI programs, just Firefox for the most part (which isn't displaying this behaviour). So, this could be a general X issue, or perhaps a WM issue.

I've been running arch linux, with my clock set to UTC with no problem. Recently I installed slackware on a different partition. During the setup I chose to set my clock to 'local time' instead of UTC by accident. Now in slackware my clock shows the wrong time. Also in arch it shows the same wrong time.
I booted back into slackware and ran pkgtool to enter the setup again, and changed my time to UTC. But this makes no difference. My clock is still wrong in both slackware and arch. Do I need to reboot after changing my clock settings in slackware before it takes effect? how the clock or the setup works.

I have an Apple TV onto which I installed Ubuntu Karmic. It works great save a small problem with SSH.The openssh-server package is installed and configured and can be started with sudo /etc/init.d/ssh start fine. When the machine is rebooted, however, it never starts itself up as it should.
rcconf reports that SSH is enabled for autostart on boot. Grepping /var/log/syslog, /var/log/messages, and /var/log/dmesg for 'ssh' yields no results. I removed and readded ssh with the following: sudo update-rc.d ssh start 40 2 3 4 5 . stop 19 0 1 6 .. Does anyone know what could be causing this to not start up properly?

Ok so I just installed Ubuntu server 9.10. It started out as cmd line only, I ended up installing ubuntu-desktop package from apt ran startx, and from that point on when ever I start the server I get the gui login screen instead of the original cmd line prompt. Now Ive been surfing around the net trying to figure out how to get it back to the original cmd prompt login screen, I really want to use startx when i need a gui.. the main reason I installed this package is really for all the libraries that it contains as i will use a few programs (firestarter, powertweak etc) that use a gui and I figured to make my life simpler i would just install the entire gnome desktop package so i will have everything i need when i try to run these misc programs (most of them will be run thru x11 forwarding as this server will only have internet and power plugged into it) Ive tried disabling gdm startup Ive even removed the /etc/init.d/gdm file all together and it still starts X (i moved it to /usr really but it should(?) work the same as deleting it). there is no other desktop manager to my knowledge (kdm etc).
Ive tried rcconf it says gdm is disabled (i tried disabling it before removing gdm from init.d and nothing), I went thru trying to disable anything that has to do with xserver so far I have only found x11-common I dont think it starts up x but i disabled it anyway. Ive also tried "update-rc.d -f gdm remove" that doesn't do anything either seems no matter what i try i cant stop the gui login screen from popping up.How do i get it to start with the original cmd prompt login?? i am considering reinstalling to get it back but i will lose all my work and that will defeat the purpose

Since Wine recognize the .exe filetype and associates itself with it, is it possible to get a virus that starts up automatically in wine or is it limited to me manually running the program?

While connecting over Xrdp, hitting the "D" key alone hides all my windows and shows the desktop. This is problematic since I often wish to type words containing at least one "D" in it. In case anyone else is having this problem, I've wrestled through it and offer this help.I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meercat and connecting via Xrdp. I only have this problem when connecting remotely.
APPARENT CAUSEI don't pretend to know for sure, but the problem appears to be that the remote connection is flubbing Metacity's "<Super>d" binding for the "show desktop" command. More precisely, the string "<Super>" doesn't appear to be functioning for me. If I change <Super> to <Ctrl>, I can use Ctrl + D to show desktop, and I can then type the letter D without it hiding every window from me.
Further evidence <Super> isn't working for me, if I change Metacity's "panel_run_dialog" global key binding from "<Alt>F2" to "<Super>F2" I bring up the run dialog by hitting F2 alone.
WORKAROUNDChange the system's "show desktop" keystroke. Here are the steps.
1) Alt+F2
2) gconf-editor
3) /->app->metacity->global_keybindings
4) Change the assigned keystroke for show_desktop from "<Super>d" to "<Ctrl>d" or "<Ctrl><Alt>d" or "disabled"
If someone finds this worthy of submitting a bug ticket, please let me know so I can follow it.

I have never seen anything like this before. Starting up today my usually completely free of clutter desktop is showing all of my home directory folders! If I delete folders from the desktop, they are also deleted from my home directory. If I create a new home directory folder, it also appears on my desktop. In effect my desktop has become my home directory and I don't like it.

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit today and I installed Adobe Air with no problems. I then installed the Pandora Desktop application and that installed fine as well. After the installation I saw a "do not enter" style sign in my status bar on the desktop. When I hover over it it's telling me an application has a broken installation. When I go into Synaptic and filter for broken I see "com.pandora.desktop.fb9956fd96e03239939108614098a d95535ee674.1" is showing broken. The description is just <> <>. Both Adobe Air and Pandora are working fine, and I'd be happy to ignore this warning except it's going to break my updating because it throws a warning every time.
Does anyone know how I can see what is apparently broken with the install or how I can suppress this message? I had the same versions of software running on 10.04 just fine before I formatted, and I'm the only person on the internet with this problem so far.I've gone over dependencies several time and don't see anything missing. I've tried reinstalling both apps several times. I don't know why this is even showing in Synaptic, since it's a sub app of Air...

I need a locked 'screensaver' that shows the real background/desktop (icons and open windows) so that my boss can see what I was working on, but my peers can't mess with it. All the Ubuntu screensavers as far as I can tell either manipulate pictures or do some 3D/2D graphics.

Was wondering if this is normal. I have a laptop which is about a year old. Recently my battery died (it last 10-15 minutes instead of 3-4 hours as it was before). I ordered a new one. While waiting for the new one I started to investigate power consumers (processes) on my machine. I run slackware64-current. with 2.6.33-rc4-git7 kernel. config - is slightly modified config-generic from -current. I attach t here for any case. Here is the output of powertop:
Code:
PowerTOP version 1.11 (C) 2007 Intel Corporation
Cn Avg residency P-states (frequencies)
C0 (ЦП работает) ( 9,0%) 2,27 ГГц 2,6%
[code]...
How can I decrease number of wakeups?

I downloaded a linux kernel from linux.org to check what is the kernel is about, i clicked on make_file or make sth .. and in the same session i downloaded a program called login window.
Now the problem is that the system boots ok, it gives me a msg saying that system is running in low graphics mode, when i press ok i get a few options like troubleshootin or restart x or use back up configuration .. and nothing works .. when i press start normally it never stops loading .. i can see the terminal when clicking ctrl + alt + f1,f2 ... but when i press ctrl + alt + f7 or return back to the desktop ubuntu is still loading .. it never stops loading.
And after using ubuntu for a while i really hate windows 7 .. i have it on the system, so is there a way to fix this problem?

I connect my laptop to my TV (1280 X 720) and mirror the images, having the same exact display on both the computer and the television. I tried doing this with another laptop (core2duo with nvidia gforce 9600) and the tv will show the desktop (not the full thing) while the computer remains the same. This is not usable. I tried using the nvidia settings application but to no avail.

I prefer ubuntu (which I have been meaning to install for a while) but my netbook currently has linpus lite on it. (It's an acer aspire one). One night I left the netbook sitting open (forgot to close it), and when I went to use it the next day, when I started it up, the desktop did not show the normal icons in the background. It still showed the bar at the bottom with the connection icon, power icon, etc. as well as the "Internet" search bar in the top right corner.
But instead of the usual linpus desktop icons, there are just black and white horizontal bars, with some coloured dots in the black bars. I can still use the terminal to open firefox, and presumably other programs. It still connects to wifi signals, and the bottom bar looks normal and functional. I am posting this message right now with my netbook, and it doesn't seem to have lost any functionality. I would much rather just click on things most of the time instead of opening terminal for everything.
