Slackware :: Running Kmdr Files In 13.0?
Jul 3, 2010
I am trying to compile kdenlive, a kommander script (with extenstion .kmdr) for which is available in kde-apps.org.I am not able to find the program kommander in either the DVD's PACKAGES.TXT nor, slackbuilds.org. Is there a new way to use kmdr scripts? While i did try to get one from slacky.eu, the command would not run after installation..... it searches for libkio.so.4, while the one installed on my system is libkio.so.5

I'm new to slackware and I am going to try install 13 but I would like to know how well MythTv will run on slackware 13. There are so many parts to MythTv that I thought there might be issues with depedencies not being up to date, etc.If you have it running on 13 were there any issues to work through?

I have a 100% Slackware 13.37 network on both server and clients, with roaming profiles using NIS and NFS. Currently I'm debugging the whole thing, and I have a strange error that I can't quite explain.Sometimes when my girlfriend logs in, she gets some strange "Firefox is already running" error. The strange thing here is: ps aux | grep firefox returns absolutely no Firefox process. The only "solution" to convince Firefox to start again is to wipe her ~/.mozilla directory, but by doing this, she loses all her bookmarks and settings.

The "fg", "bg" and "jobs" commands all exist in slackware, and their definition of what a job is, is not simply "any old app that happens to be running", because they all tell me that there are no jobs running on my system.
So how can I get them to recognize a particular app as a "job"?

so I know this is probably one of the most asked questions from Slackware noobs, but i can't seem to find an acceptable answer to this question. How to get wireless networking, working under Slackware linux.I know the tools i should be using(ifconfig, iwconfig) but I have no idea how to use them. I know the init script that I need to edit but I'm not to sure where to get the information it requires, such as the ESSID.I am running 13.1 64bit. I know that the wireless network I want to connect to uses WPA encryption. As well I have never used Slackware before, I've had the most experience with CrunchBang, the problem being wireless worked out of the box for that.

Just a warning / question about Encfs on Slackware current. I doesn't work due to the upgrade to boost 1.4.2. I ran encfs on an old install of 13.0 to get at my data, but I'd prefer to access it right from current. A big warning: if you try to access your encrypted data on current it will corrupt your encfs6.xml file and I don't know if it is recoverable (I had a backup of mine).

is it possible to run for instance pan remotely via ssh and make that instance of pan running on server, regardless upon closing it via ssh?for example i would love to do: start pan instance via ssh on the server keep it open while downloading close the ssh session, keep the pan running on the server in background. open ssh session and access the same instance of pan running on the server etc something in that loop.im unable to do that because when i close pan ssh remotely the instance automatically terminates on the server.

I am taking a parallel computing course at school and will be required to write programs using MPI soon. All of the school servers have Lam/MPI installed on them but I can only find OpenMPI slackbuild scripts. If I install OpenMPI on my computer and do my development on my own machine, will I have much trouble when it's compiled/run on the school servers?

I am running Windows XP in VirtualBox. I generally only use it for iTunes and some light browsing occassionally. Downloads only occur on iTunes, but it does have internet access. And my wife will still only use Windows, so if she uses this particular machine it is available to her, and she occassionally goes to facebook on this machine.
Should I install an anti-virus? Is it really necessary? I am pretty certain my Linux install would be unaffected even if a virus or other malware did occur in VirtualBox.

For some reason after I close firefox , firefox-bin keeps running and it eats more cpu than when firefox was open, a lot more. Same thing with seamonkey, seamonkey-bin keeps running after it is closed.
Attached are two pictures ,
1) While firefox is running: notice the low CPU usage
2) Firefox closed, CPU is almost 50%

I upgraded from 13.1. I'm using Xfce4, I've been using a button on my lower panel to launch xlock. Been working fine the last month. Upgraded to 13.37rc3.pi this morning.
Used my computer today for several hours today (after the upgrade). No problems. Hit my xlock launcher a couple hours ago, animation started. Turned monitor off. Then a few minutes ago, when I turned my monitor back on, black/blank screen, no password prompt. Killed xlock (had to use -s 9); no change. Saw xscreensaver was running, killed that too. No effect on my locked screen.
I then killed kdm and logged back in to an Xfce session. Back to normal now. I hit my xlock button. Got an animation up, typed in my password, and got back to my desktop no problem.
Here's something for starters:

I have a computer with Debian installed. I would like to install Slack on another partition. Problem - this computer has no cd and won't boot from a USB stick when the hard drive is connected (go figure...disconnect hard drive, it boots from usb stick) no matter how I set the bios.
I have a copy of the Slack DVD copied to the local hard drive. I can configure lilo to boot from ubnkern on the slack dvd file set, but that just boots debian using that particular kernel - surprisingly it boots, but is not how to get to slack setup. Given the above setup and restrictions, how would I go about getting to slack setup? I'm kinda stuck here, trying to figure out what to do next.

I installed the proprietary fglrx drivers, and they didn't really do anything other than break half my software or make it slower. Now the first time I installed the .run binary by just doing 'sh ati-driver-installer-10-3-x86.x86_64'. Then, after Google'ing on how to remove it, I just did 'rmmod fglrx' outside of X and deleted all the kernel modules manually. And that seemed to fix a few things, but not all.
Then I found another thread saying just turn the .run into a pkg, do installpkg, and removepkg, and I did that as well. It fixed most of the problems and seems to have deleted all traces of the fglrx ATI driver. Now, though, anytime I try to run anything 3D, like glxgears, instead of just giving me a segmentation fault, it says:
Code:
glxgears: error while loading shared libraries: libatiuki.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I've Google'd but nothing related came up, Also I can post my xorg.conf file but I don't think that is the cause of this, because I ran 'xorgsetup' and messed around with it some, and it was doing this even before I ran 'xorgsetup' and after I ran it / modified it.

I've been running Slackware 13.37 since RC1 (so I'm a relatively new Slacker!). I set up CUPS to start as a default service during my install process. I print once in a while, but my computer is not a print-server per se. Do I have to have it auto-started in order to just be able to print on-demand (like, from LibreOffice or Okular)?

After a few hours work I have managed to set up pptd so that my daughter can log into her account at Imperial College. My problem now is that I need to have a script that she can run if she wants to log in. She will have to invoke a couple of root commands and I do not want to give her the root password What she needs to do to set up networking is:
Quote:
pppd call imperial dump debug logfd 2 nodetach require-mppe
/sbin/ip route add default dev ppp0
How can I enable things so that she can run this script as user?

I've tried been trying my hardest and tried researching as much as I can to get Mac OS X Version 10.6.3 in VirtualBox in slackware. I've found a tutorial but it was for previous versions of Snow Leop and it hasn't seemed to help me get mine to run. I get to the part where it should start loading the cd (I purchased a copy of Snow Leopard from Amazon) and the closest I've gotten is to what seems to be a bootup and a loading page of some sort. The screen goes gray with a Mac "busy" mouse icon on the screen.
PS - Running Slack 12.1.0.
PPS - I have the Snow Leopard disc that has "boot camp" on it

I've tried this several times and cannot get claws-mail to run. Libetpan has been installed, removed and re-installed. When trying to start c-mail it say cannot find libetpan.so.13 which is accurate - the current installation of libetpan puts in libetpan.so.15. These packages all come from slackbuilds (have also tried Alien's package wtih the same results). This a standard 13.1 install with regular updates through slackpkg.

I would like to use my second monitor with my Slackware (Laptop) setup but they are different sizes/resolutions.
This is no problem with KDE but before X is started and when X ends there are big issues with the TTY0 console being distorted.
Is it possible to disable the second monitor when X is not running?
(Slackware64Current, ATI Mobility Radeon HD3200 card)
I essentially want the second monitor to activate ONLY in the event of an X Session and turn off when X halts.

I've been trying to figure out the cause of system hangs with slack 13 for a a week or so. I get random total freezes with the keyboard LED's blinking at me and the only solution is to do a hard-reset. I was using a self-compiled 2.6.31.6 kernel on 32bit Slack with similar results, but thought it had more to do with several bad starts as I got used to Slack's way of doing things... eventually I decided I'd made enough bad starts with that installation and after reading a bit about _current fixing some stability issues added another installation to my machine using Slackware64 and upgrading to _current. It worked great, then I installed the NVIDIA proprietary driver. The system hangs are back.
Sometimes they happen quickly, sometimes they take hours, sometimes while I'm working, sometimes when the machine has been idle for hours. For a couple of days I've been going back and forth between the NVIDIA propreitary and the nv driver. I've run memtest86 for 4.5 hours and not a single error, I'm running this on a new HD, I even upgraded the case fan (the old one was starting to complain!).
I've also installed different versions of the driver 185.x.x, 190.42.x. I've used slackbuilds, I've used "sh NVIDA.xxx.RUN" I've said "yes" to everything the installer asked, I've said "no".
So far no hangs with the nv driver. I've been leaving one or the other running at all times and no hangs with the nv driver, but within hours with the proprietary driver.
All that is to say I'm confident the issue is with the NVIDIA proprietary driver, OR something in my kernel options that only shows up when I'm using the NVIDIA driver.
Is anyone else running this successfully?
SLACKWARE64 kernel 2.6.32 (same behavior on 32bit with 2.6.31.6) compiled kernel with "make oldconfig" then "make localmodconfig" BEFORE the NVIDIA driver was installed. ext3 filesystem (same behavior with ext4 on previous installation)

Is there anyway to run KDE without Plasma? At install I opted out of the kdebase-workspace package, but then didn't have the xwmconfig option to run KDE.Duplicating, then commenting out the original, and on the uncommented line: removing everything after 'Exec='. Taking the 'plasma.desktop' out. ...Deleting the entire file will only get it rewritten again by the system..Now it loads into beautiful void.I still have my GUI, complete with any kApps you might want: konsole, konqueror, and even krunner; but no panels or Desktop Activities. Is it still loading plasma only no longer implementing it? Am I losing precious RAM'CPU usage with plasma getting loaded without being used?
