Slackware :: When Does Official Support For 12.2 End
Apr 23, 2010
Just wondering as I couldn't find anything regarding when official slackware support ends for 12.2?
And, does that assume that sbopkg support for 12.2 would also end at same time?

I noticed that the official Slackware packages don't contain static libraries. The SlackBuild scripts from slackbuilds.org or from Slackware DVD usually contain --disable-static option to prevent building the .a file. And if configure script doesn't allow such option, the .a file is deleted before the package is created.I am wondering what is the reason for that? Is it just the matter of conserving disk space? Are there also other reasons?

Now that 13.1 is available I am thinking about getting the official CD in the hope that from time to time I can use their support team. Do you think it's worth it. Naturally I would like to also support the team for their efforts. Would they support me on occasions I cannot get it here? Mostly support to do with available software packages, gnome, etc.

I was wondering on how to use Gnome instead of the official KDE build. I know I can go to the third party slackbuilds.org. But not sure where to look on how to install it. If someone can direct me in the right direction that would be swell.
I am looking for a install step by step guide for Gnome. I was also curious if the Gnome version would provide me the same stability and speed as the official Slackware with KDE.
My second question is regarding the Slackbook project. I know I can get the pdf file and print it out but I was hoping for a book that can get shipped to me and when I purchase it the proceeds go to the Slackware organization.

I am trying to convince the "higher ups" in a small office of about 15 users about migrating from windows to Slackware, one question I have is how long after a release are security updates available? I subscribe to the security mailing list and often see updates that go as far back as Slackware 8.0. What would the safe number be? 5 years, 10 years? Longer? Any input would help me with my cause of eliminating windows all together.

Desktop effects were working until a resume from suspend failed. After that, it says that desktop effects cannot be enabled due to a technical issue, but it does not say what that issue is, it is not the same dialogue box that says check your X config file, it says it directly in the settings menu. I tried deleting ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc, but it only works once. If I log out and then back in, KDE freezes while loading, forcing me to ctrl + alt + backspace to kill X.
After that, I can log back in, but desktop effects don't work and when I go to enable them I see the same error, and it won't let me. My graphics card is an ATI Radeon X1950PRO. AMD does not support that GPU anymore and the drivers are too old for them to work on Slackware64 13.37. This means I am using the open-source drivers that come with Slackware64 13.37. I just found out that desktop effects are causing the resume from suspend to fail.

I downgraded a computer a couple of weeks ago from -current to 13.1. At that point in time the USB support in my Virtualbox stopped working. Since then I have installed Virtualbox on my wife's laptop, which also runs 13.1, and the USB support doesn't work there either. So I tried it on yet another 13.1 box that I have lying around no USB support. Then I upgraded the latter box to -current and USB works! Given that sequence of events, I'm pretty sure this is a Slackware 13.1 problem rather than a Virtualbox problem. what might be causing this?

I read this on Patrick's twitter: Considering compiling future 32-bit x86 Slackware packages for i686 and finally leaving i486 and i586 support behind. Would the devs mind sharing why the change hasn't been made? I'm guessing there must be a lot of Slackware users with 15-20 year old computers that want to run the latest software.

A few days ago I tried out Fedora 14, but it didn't really live long. However, I have now Slackware on my netbook again. While I was trying Fedora I installed Clementine and I had to install an extra mp3 lib (I installed Fluendo MP3) to enable mp3 support. On my main machine I have also installed Slackware and Clementine and I can play mp3, so I ponder where's Slackware's mp3 lib? I egrep'ed /var/log/packages for "mp3" but I couldn't find any appropriate. Does Slackware use a shared mp3 lib or is the mp3 support in all the programs?

Work I've got 2 slackware 13.1 64 machines, and they work just fine: Basic installation, everything ' bog standard 'When in Dolphin or Konqueror, I can ' click ' on Network Services and all the other MS Window machines pop-up.
@Home I've got 2 slackware 13.1 64 machines, they don't work fine. Basic installation, everything ' bog standard '. When in Dolphin or Konqueror, I can 'click' on Network Services and 'KDE has been build without Zeroconf support' pops up in Konqueror or is displayed in Dolpin..
Is it my netwerk @ Home (with an old Windows Server in it) or is something missing in the installation? Under MS windows (from within a virtualbox, brigded network) both machines can browse the network just perfectly: I even got a XP machine 'joined' in the domain on the windows server). Clueless since a google on the error + slackware give me Zero. Zeroconf in the slackware forum give me some midly related

I use Slackware 13.37 32-bit version on ThinkPad X60s. I compiled two Window Maker dockable applications monitoring the processor temperature, fan speed, and battery status: wmpower (see: [URL]) and wmlenovo (see: [URL]). Both these applications refuse to work.
wmpower displays the messages:
Code:
CPU frequency scaling available
No power management subsystem detected
No power management support...
wmlenovo displays the message:
Code:
No ACPI support in kernel
Did I missed something obvious during the configuration of the system and ACPI doesn't work for me or there's some more serious problem with my system?

I am a long time (1.something) slackware user and maintainer of a mirror site.I'm suddenly having problems with my favorite distro. (1) I've been mainly running Slackware64. When I was experiencing recent problems on a Slackware (32) 13.1 system, I discovered the huge-smp kernel does not support more than 4G of RAM. This is an obvious bug, and I am shocked that there is no fix out yet. Surely I can't be the only Slackware 32 user with >4G of RAM. I've verified it on a 12G i7 system and an 8G Athlon64-X2 system.

I'm using Slackware 13.1, just messing around with some stuff before I upgrade to 13.37. I really want to get a decent build of Desmume working, but the 3D engine for it requires OSMesa to be enabled. I've removed the initial Mesa package that I installed from the Slackware DVD and I'm trying to recompile mesa-7.8.1 so that OSMesa is available for the system. However, I keep running into problems.
Code:
./configure --enable-gl-osmesa
When I run those options for the configure command and compile it, Mesa builds alright and gives me a working libGL just fine. It also gives me libOSMesa. Yet, when I compile Desmume to specifically use OSMesa, its configure script says that it can't find OSMesa at all. But running ldconfig -p, the output shows libOSMesa.so in /usr/lib. The symlink is up to date too, and I've recreated it several times.
Code:
./configure --with-driver=osmesa
When I build Mesa using these configure options, I don't get libGL (well, that's expected, the manual says as much will happen). But apparently libOSMesa is installed just fine. When I went to compile Desmume, no gripes about OSMesa, but Desmume needs both libGL and OSMesa to work properly.
So my question is, how can I install Mesa so that I have OpenGL and OSMesa working together? I've been able to get one working, but not both. I don't know how to get OpenGL on Slackware without using the Mesa package, but the package isn't cooperating. I'm on Intel graphics too.

I have tried rebuilding pygtk after installing Numpy and ended up making a mess of python. I have it back to functional now, but I would like to know how to properly add numeric python support. I suspect there is a proper order to building all of the python dependencies that yields success. Ultimately I am trying to run mypaint.

Support for ipv6 keeps being put into the kernel and now into browsers.I blacklisted ipv6 in Slackware and that solved the slow internet response until I updated to the latest Opera and Firefox browsers. Both were horribly slow again. Firefox could be reconfigured to kill ipv6 by running about:config as a url and disabling ipv6.
The new Opera 11 is different. I can't find any config to disable ipv6. Does anyone have an idea?I reverted to Opera 10.11 in order to have zippy internet access again, and not "dialup modem" speeds.

I am trying to get Kmymoney working with HBCI support on my Slackware64-13.37 system. My understanding is, that there are three dependencies for Kmymoney 4.5.3:
AqBanking 5.0.5
Gwenhyfwar 4.0.9
KMyMoney Plugin (kmm_kbanking) 1.0
I used to believe, that the plugin wasn't needed anymore in recent version of KMyMoney, but it seems, that I was wrong. With src2pkg I was able to compile AqBanking and Gwenhyfwar:
Code:
# src2pkg -e
'--with-openssl-includes=/usr/include
--with-openssl-libs=/usr/lib64
--with-qt4-includes=/usr/lib64/qt/include
--with-qt4-libs=/usr/lib64/qt/lib'
Then I used the SlackBuild script from SlackBuilds.org, modified the version to 4.5.3 and started it with ARCH=x86_64. Compilation ran through smooth, and I installed the package. However, HBCI support is disabled.
After some web research I came to the conclusion, that the KBanking module is still needed. So I grabbed it from the original source. Unfortunately I can't properly compile this one. Although I installed KDE3 and Qt3 compatibility packages from Slackware64-13.1 I get:
Code:
checking for Qt... configure:
error: Qt (>= Qt 3.2 and < 4.0)
(headers and libraries) not found.
check your installation!
Has anyone managed to get through the whole process and to activate HBCI support in KMyMoney?

I am using slackware64-current. I have installed the package links-2.3pre1-x86_64-1 and I love it. I launch it from the command line with the "links -g" switch and it can display pictures, it's great, but it doesn't seem to support ssl connections.
Am i doing something wrong or do I need another build? I know that in the past there used to be two different binaries, is it still so? Where can I find a ssl-enabled binary for 64 bit without need to recompile?
