Slackware :: Install Non Official Packages?
Feb 11, 2011
this one might be simple BUT, where tha heck, I can download some non official software for slackware,I can use installpkg, pkgtool or even gslapt, but WHERE can I download packages or even better set as source for slapt-get.For example two applications: blender 2.49bor due to suckage of craps like mplayer that is installed by default with slackware VLC media player

I noticed that the official Slackware packages don't contain static libraries. The SlackBuild scripts from slackbuilds.org or from Slackware DVD usually contain --disable-static option to prevent building the .a file. And if configure script doesn't allow such option, the .a file is deleted before the package is created.I am wondering what is the reason for that? Is it just the matter of conserving disk space? Are there also other reasons?

Now that 13.1 is available I am thinking about getting the official CD in the hope that from time to time I can use their support team. Do you think it's worth it. Naturally I would like to also support the team for their efforts. Would they support me on occasions I cannot get it here? Mostly support to do with available software packages, gnome, etc.

Just wondering as I couldn't find anything regarding when official slackware support ends for 12.2?
And, does that assume that sbopkg support for 12.2 would also end at same time?

I was wondering on how to use Gnome instead of the official KDE build. I know I can go to the third party slackbuilds.org. But not sure where to look on how to install it. If someone can direct me in the right direction that would be swell.
I am looking for a install step by step guide for Gnome. I was also curious if the Gnome version would provide me the same stability and speed as the official Slackware with KDE.
My second question is regarding the Slackbook project. I know I can get the pdf file and print it out but I was hoping for a book that can get shipped to me and when I purchase it the proceeds go to the Slackware organization.

I recentley added a few extra repositories to apt, and I can use them well normally. However, today I needed a deveploment library only found in the "unofficial" software repos. I did a search in synaptic, but nothing shows up except the offical packages, or if the unofficial ones do show up, they don't all show up. All my new repos have the new key added as well. How can I get synaptic to index all of my packages, regardless of where they come from?

seemed to have buggered up installing netbeans on my slackware 13.0 machine. I got the source (the zip file), which i copied into the extracted slackbuild, then did a
Code:
./netbeans.SlackBuild
It all seemed to work fine, at the end it told me my package could be found in /tmp. So i went there and did a
Code: root@slackLap:/tmp# slackpkg install netbeans-6.8-i586-1_SBo.tgz
Looking for netbeans-6.8-i586-1_SBo.tgz in package list. Please wait... DONE
No packages match the pattern for install. Try: /usr/sbin/slackpkg reinstall|upgrade
ps i'm running 32bit slackware 13.0

I'm reading the 3rd official handbook in beta version and I learn that the automated tool "slackpkg" exists only since Slackware 12.1.Before that, how did users install new packages and their libraries ? Did they search each package with their web browsers and then install manually? For me, it seems tedious because I usually work with distributions like Fedora, Debian which use an online package management. Is there another way to download it from console and without web browser?

I have a brand new Slackware 13.1 x64 installation, and I'm having problems with slapt-get.
I'm unable to upgrade existing packages or install new ones. The output in terminal is:
Code:
bash-4.1# slapt-get -i tar
Reading Package Lists... Done
The following NEW packages will be installed:
tar
[Code]....
Worth mentioning also, I managed to install Gnome from [URL] without any problems immediately prior to this error message starting to appear.
I've been using Debian and Ubuntu derivatives for the last couple of years, so I'm comfortable using the terminal and possibly doing some more advanced stuff.

If this is correct, how do you know if there updates available?
Do you need to down load and install the individual updated packages?
Sorry for this but I think that I am confused, or worse, not.

So I am a bit puzzled. After upgrading to 10.04, I seem to have lost my official Sun Java and plugins for Firefox/Opera. I wouldn't care normally about having the official Sun Java instead of IcedTea plugin and Open Java which is now installed, except that my university doesn't support anything for our Student Information System except for official Sun Java.
My question is this: Is there a way to install Sun Java back onto my machine instead of the "new" OpenJava?

I've recently ran the Updater Applet to install any pertinent official openSUSE updates, but I got 2-3 (they vanished before I could click on them) popups on the bottom right of my screen saying that an update had failed. Additionally, I found the following message in the Updater's lower panel:
Code:
This update fixes an issue caused by a previous
yast2-ncurses update, which would leave some ncurses
(textmode) yast2 tools crashing.
- #569000: yast2-ncurses-2.18.11-0.1.1: crash of yast -i

Are there any official, almost-official or maybe even reasonably stable kernel repositories with new kernels for opensuse 11.2? I recently changed my laptop for a new one which has some issues, which then again are solved in 2.6.33 (and even in 2.6.32 with some tweaking). I would by any means try to avoid kernel recompilation.

Like a guy earlier today report a problem with Opensuse 11.2 working fine on his machine but 11.3 is not. I have somewhat the same problem. The default installation freezes randomly. I have seen this error before with Intel video cards but never with NVIDIA. Right now, I'm using VESA in failsafe mode and trying to install some drivers from this repo.
I'll try and find a fix for this. (Hope their is one)BTW, can anyone confirm when the official drivers for NVIDIA cards are coming out?

I just upgraded from 11.2 to 11.4 and the installation/upgrade worked just perfect. I than followed the instructions in the "New User How To/FAQ", "Multimedia and restricted format" post. I was following the instruction in the 11.4 section. I added the additional repositories as explained. I then was on the section where it talks about going into software management and selecting the "Packman" repository and clicking to "switch systems packages" to the versions in this repository (packman). I than click this link and the "warning" screen appears and I am present with conflict resolution after conflict resolution dialog. It just seems that there are some many conflicts, it just seems wrong and I canceled.
The installation/upgrade appears to have worked just fine. My mail is there, audio and dvd play back worked the first try after the upgrade. I am not clear if this is what I should expect or their is something wrong or if I even need to complete this step for a successfully installation.

I am trying to solve multiple issues with my 64x natty install using gnome3 ppa( official ppa from gnome3). I have this setup on two machines, one is a fresh install the other is a upgrade. They both have most of these issues. Here they are: 1) Nautilus will not launch from the favorites bar. It does launch from a shortcut on the desktop. It will not run from the terminal unless I am root. 2) Number lock is disabled at startup (enabled in my bios). I used to be able to enable after nattty had started, I no longer can, though num lock light is lit - number keypad does not work!
3) I have set gnome3 set to let nautilus draw the background and desktop, I get a white screen at boot until Nautilus is launched then I get a background and some desktop icons(no computer or network icons). If I plug in a usb drive the icon appears on my desktop, when I select it I loose the background and have to select it again.
4) Wireless randomly will drop the connection, have to reconnect, sometimes it will, sometimes I have to reboot. I have Fedora installed on a 2nd hard drive on the machine with a clean install and the only similarity is it displays the default desktop until I launch Nautilus, then my background and desktop are displayed with all of the icons. From there on out Fedora has none of these issues. I have used Ubuntu Gnome and XFCE as my only os since 6.0 and have never had this many problems. Both machines would not run the gdm because of Nvidia issues after the upgrade and clean install. I DO NOT want to give up on Ubuntu as I tell all my friends and family to use it.
