how? there don't seem to be any 3rd-party apps for it, so is it already in linux?

Slackware :: Clock Shows The Wrong Time In Slackware
May 10, 2011I've been running arch linux, with my clock set to UTC with no problem. Recently I installed slackware on a different partition. During the setup I chose to set my clock to 'local time' instead of UTC by accident. Now in slackware my clock shows the wrong time. Also in arch it shows the same wrong time.
I booted back into slackware and ran pkgtool to enter the setup again, and changed my time to UTC. But this makes no difference. My clock is still wrong in both slackware and arch. Do I need to reboot after changing my clock settings in slackware before it takes effect? how the clock or the setup works.

Jun 5, 2010im a rookie at configuring linux and i have problem booting slackware 13.1 just installed. i get a message similar to this Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown- block(8,4) i got this one from another user who has a similar problem, they say i should fix lilo.conf and it actually was pointing to a wrong partition so i fixed it. i also fixed /etc/fstab to make it point to the right partition /dev/sda3. but after fixing the files, it still wants to load something in /dev/sda4, i dont know why so what should i do next, please explain with commands and not just words. edit this is my lilo.conf

Slackware :: Change The Font For The Digital Clock, And KDE Was Frozen?
May 24, 2010Updated from KDE 4.3.5, saw memory consumption dropped a little bit, speed increased by a few percent. But when I added a widget to the panel, I could not see the widget. And when I double-clicked the same widget in the widget list (intending to remove it -- if it is a T' flip-flop), the widget was still on the panel, alive, and hidden.
Then I gave up, and wanted to change the font for the digital clock, and KDE was frozen. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace worked, fortunately. I think for my workshop presentation next week, I'd better use xfce.
Slackware :: Losing Hardware Clock Time While Using Wvdial On Usb Modem / Fix It?
Jul 21, 2011Now that I'm able to connect to Internet via my MC760 wireless modem on /dev/ttyUSB0, I am losing time!
I have lost 5 minutes while online for 1/2 hr.
Yes ntpd is running. What is strange is that right now, I'm in town at coffee shop and using wireless. I'm not losing time at all. This isn't the first time I've noticed the loss of time. It's been happening every since I was able to connect with the usb modem. I just had to come to town and use wireless to see if the problem existed while on wireless (b43). While being connected via the MC760, I've also noticed that the cpu temp rises and the fan runs quite a bit more than when not connected via the MC760. Aug 5, 2010If I set the clock to speak the time, I get this when it tries: starting kttsd failed. I've looked at the various posts, but haven't yet found an actual solution. I've tried to run kttsmgr, but for some reason the "run" dialog doesn't seem to do anything - no error, nothing. Type kttsmgr, press enter since there is not obvious other way to execute the command, and nothing happens.
Is this a module that does not come with KDE? And I give - I can't find time format anywhere. How do you change the clock that appears in the lower right corner to 12 hour instead of what appears to be default 24 hour? I don't see it in "Digital Clock Settings", and I don't see it in System Settings - Date & Time. This is a clean install of slackware 13.1, and whatever version of KDE comes with it.

Jan 28, 2011While dual-booting Windows and Linux, Linux sets the system time to UTC, so Windows thinks it's midnight near mid-morning. Is there any other way to tell Windows to use UTC? I've seen the registry tweak proposed here and other places. Aug 4, 2010I triple boot with XP on the first partition, sidux on the second and third and Ubuntu on the fourth. sidux controls grub2. When I boot into XP or Ubuntu, my clock gets set ahead 4 hours to UTC time (I'm on Eastern daylight time).
Is there a way for all three OSs to display the right time?

Jun 23, 2010Wrong system clock; Right hardware clock. 'date' and 'hwclock --show' show big differences in time. Hardware clock keeps the correct time, but 'date', the system clock, doesn't (often wrong in a matter of hours). So I'm sure it is the problem of the kernel. I'm tired of synching hardware clock with the system clock all the time. How do I get Ubuntu to use the hardware clock instead of its own in the first place?

Feb 16, 2011I restored my .kde directory after changing some stuff unrelated to my clock and now all plasma clocks are exactly 5 hours faster than my system time (the correct time).I've set the time zone for Date&Time in System Settings properly and that's working well and I've ALSO gone into the time zone settings for the plasma widgets and switched between UTC and Local manually but that doesn't do anything.

Sep 8, 2010the time on system clock given with 'date' command keeps moving forward about 1 minute for every hour of realtime. The box is up all the time so this is not an issue with motherboard battery. An equivalent box with the same hardwre/OS and applications doesn't have the same level of drift. I'm not sure what else this could be.Both boxes are Centos 5.2 64-bit.

I've been frustrated with several problems I've been experiencing with Karmic Koala. The one I'll mention in this post is the fact that it randomly decides to adjust the system clock ahead 6 hours. I believe this began happening when I set the location for the system time that displays in the top panel. I'm guessing that the 6 hours is the fact that I'm in the US Central Time zone.

Apr 20, 2011I've set-up dual boot on my laptop. Ubuntu installed first, then Windows 7 so it uses Grub2 to control the booting on start-up. I've noticed that my system clock goes out by an hour on both OS's, I change the clock to correct time & on reboot the time is usually (not always straight away) an hour behind. Has anyone else had this problem & know how to fix it?

Debian Configuration :: Clock Readjusted After System Crashed - Cannot Reboot
Dec 20, 2010I have recently come across a Debian installation page for powerpc: viewtopic.php?t=20481. It got me motivated to fix the Debian I have on my iBook G4. I have a Debian Lenny installed on my iBook G4 -- but I have been having some sort of problem (mostly likely due to hardware) which causes the system to crash. After the latest crash, the clock on iBook has been readjusted. For this reason, I cannot reboot Debian completely.
Every time I turn on the computer it begins the booting process but before I get to my desktop I encounter numerous error messages concerning my clock. After either OK'ing or canceling these error messages, I get to my desktop but the system by then is either frozen or else not working at all. Worse, I can't even turn off the computer since the upper right corner of the desktop is completely blank and I have no menu to turn off or reboot the system.
It took this computer to a local Apple store and they ran many different hardware diagnostic tests on it. They concluded there's "technically" nothing wrong with the computer. But they said although the system has successfully passed all hardware tests, there may still remain some complicated but slight hardware glitch/es which the hardware diagnostics could not pick up.

Jun 1, 2010Today I updated a bunch of packages, rebooted. I run lucid 10.04 x86_64, originally Xubuntu but now gnome since I cannot make xfce4-panel tasklist behave with compiz. Anyway, by the end of the day my clock was 10min off. If I use ntpdate at about 10min intervals I see things like:
$ sudo ntpdate time.xxx.xxx.de 1 Jun 18:37:02 ntpdate[9734]: step time server xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx offset 10.043055 sec
I have deleted /etc/adjtime and touch'd a blank file to no avail.
Is this problem serious? Is it likely software or hardware? Is running an ntp daemon the right solution or would it be masking a new software or hardware problem that appeared today?

Feb 26, 2009I'm setting the hardware clock on RHEL 5.1 system using /sbin/hwclock --systohc. After setting the clock I issue a date command followed by a /sbin/hwclock --show from within a script to get fast resolution and I see that the hardware clock precedes the system time on average by .5 seconds. I would think the clock should be identical after setting.

May 27, 2011I'm using a very simple conky script to diplay the date and time on my desktop. I've noticed that he conky clock is a few seconds early compared to the time displayed in the right hand side of the top panel (Natty). I guess both displays are based on the same "internal" time, so I'm left wondering how this could happen, and how to sync back the clocks.
It seems that Conky is in sync with the system date, while the panel clock is 2 seconds late (on my system). Checked with while true; do date; sleep 0.1; done
