Slackware :: Successfully Setup Brother DCP-135C For Scanning In 13.0?

Mar 23, 2010

I was trying to setup my Brother DCP-135C to scan for Slackware 13.0 (stable, with patches) These are the following steps taken:

1. Download the brscan2-0.2.5-1.i386.deb and brscan-skey-0.2.1-3.i386.deb driver files from [URL]

2. Use the command "ar x" to extract files from the driver files. Used "tar xvf" on data.tar.gz files to unpack the actual files to be installed. Used "tar xvf" to look into control.tar.gz to know what command to run post installation. Repacked them into Slackware packages using makepkg.

3. Depending on how the drivers are repacked, you might need to run these commands (hints take from control.tar.gz)

# /usr/local/Brother/sane/setupSaneScan2 -i
# /usr/local/Brother/sane/brscan-skey-0.2.1-3.sh 0

4. Added the following line in /lib/udev/rules.d/80-libsane.rules. I added these lines near other definitions of Brother devices.

# Brother DCP-135C
ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ATTRS{idProduct}=="01ce", MODE="0666", GROUP="scanner", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

5. ensure your userid is part of group "scanner". Run xsane.

Ubuntu Networking :: Setup A Brother MFC-J415w Wireless Printer In 64 Bit

Dec 26, 2010

As I have recently figured out, it is very hard to set-up a Brother MFC-J415w wireless printer on a 64 bit machine, so to save you from spending hours searching the Internet and trying different drivers, I will tell you how to set one up.

Step one: Download the 32-bit driver from this link: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com...html#MFC-J415W. When prompted, save the file.

Step two: Open the terminal and type in the following commands:

Code:

mkdir /usr/lib/cups

Code:

mkdir /usr/lib/cups/filter

Code:

mkdir /usr/share/cups/model

Depending on what you've tried before, some of these directories may already exist. Step three: Type the following commands:

Code:

sudo -s

Slackware :: Take Current Windows7 (x64) Setup And Make It Into A Dual-boot Setup With Slackware 13.0?

Jan 24, 2010

I'm trying to take my current windows7 (x64) setup and make it into a dual-boot setup with slackware 13.0 (x32) and am hitting a brickwall. I guess I would like to know if I can salvage the situation without formating my windows drive. I fully intend to, but I had hoped to not do it this month. I'd like to get dual boot going so I can master it and acquire all the files/drivers I'll want and then format and do it 100% right next time.

Currently I have windows setup on a 3x 500gb Raid0 onboard array which itself has been flawless. After I shrunk my current partition size to give me about 25gb of free space I proceeded to setup Linux, and I was unable to perform the cfdisk portion for partitioning the array for Linux.

I tried using cfdisk:
/dev/hdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)
/dev/sdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)

I even attempted to locate with: cat proc/partition and tried using cfdisk on every device it located. It always said it was either an unknown partition table and should I start at zero, or bad partition. I was of course too concerned over my windows setup (which has almost 1tb of stuff I have not backed up) to go any further into the unknown.

PS: I have used Slackware before, back at 8.1, 10, and even a very brief interlude at 12.0, this is my first attempt on this computer however with 13.0, it is currently running fine on my laptop and my PS3 (Laptop is even dual booting 7/Slack13. Albeit without raid)

Slackware :: HP 6310 - Hplib - Use Scanning Over The Network And Hopefully The Document Feeder

Apr 8, 2011

I was recently given an HP Officejet 6310 all-in-one. While I could care less about printing, I have a laser and can use wife's inkjet for the rare times I need color so any ink cartridges in this one would just dry out. What I really want is to be able to use scanning over the network and hopefully the document feeder.

So I can scan multiple docs as a batch instead of having to change by hand. Has anybody done this before with Slackware? I went to HP's site and didn't find Slackware listed for hplib download. I went to the sane mailing list, but my posts keep getting bounced due to "greylist", and that never happened before.

OpenSUSE :: FIrewall Setup / Client Computer Cannot See NFS Server When Scanning For Server - OSE 11.2?

Apr 21, 2010

I have a small home-office network. On that network I have two linux computers, one is a client the other a server.

On the server I have NFS Server setup and mount some NFS exports on the client computer.

On the server I have the firewall on and here it becomes a little tricky.

Since both the server and the client connect to the router the interface (eth1) is theoretically both an internal & external zone.

The router is commercial grade and therefore has a good firewall on it which is also setup. Therefore the firewall on the server is really more of a backup than a necessity. But that's fine, and by having the server's firewall on 'fail2ban' is able to work which I like to have working so I don't want to just turn off the server firewall even though I have good security from the router.

However, when I turn on the server's firewall, the client computer cannot see the NFS server when scanning for server -- done by: clicking on "Choose" next to "NFS Server Hostname" when adding an NFS share in the NFS Client in YaST. Clearly something is being blocked even though I have both "NFS Client" and "NFS Server Service" allowed in the server firewall. The Firewall config. files for these are below.

The Firewall configuration is pretty much "out of the box". That is I have the services I need opened up for the external zone, the other zones are left at their default which means the internal zone, although not used (i.e.: attached to any interface), is completely open.

The perfect solution I guess would be to setup my client computer to connect through a different NIC (perhaps eth0), make that the "Internal Zone" and therefore allow all traffic through to it while still blocking the server from the external zone. However, I cannot make that physical change to my network for now so I am looking for an in between (non-perfect) solution.

In this case I am guessing that means opening up extra NFS ports to the external zone so I have full NFS functionality. I don't mind this because like I said, the router firewall is the main line of defense anyway.

So, given all of the above could someone tell me what I would need to additionally open up in the server firewall to make the NFS server detection work on the client while the firewall was on. Or, if you have a cleverer/better solution without me changing my physical network that would be great.

Hopefully I have written this in enough detail and clearly enough so that all the parameters are clear but if not, feel free to ask me what you like and I'll try to make it clear.

Code:
## Description: Firewall Configuration for NFS kernel server.
#
# Only the variables TCP, UDP, RPC, IP and BROADCAST are allowed.
# More may be supported in the future.

Slackware :: Terminator Helps Setup Slackware

May 28, 2010

No, not Arnold S.I'm talking about the one from slackbuilds.org. It's not just another terminal emulator. It's got a cool feature of broadcasting the input to all (or selected windows). If it's a well known and used feature, than I'm sorry. I read about it a couple of days ago and soon it proved a big time-saver.

As all my systems are almost identical (selection of software, /home/ directory structure, program configuration, etc) I used terminator to set up my new shiny Slackware64 13.1 systems. The 'broadcast' function of terminator mirrors your input to other terminator windows (ssh sessions to other machines). That way I didn't have to configure it three times on three computers. I know that one can write a script to automate most of things, but sometimes there are interactive steps which would not work in a script.
It was especially useful in:

1. using sbopkg (3 simultaneous instances doing exactly the same thing on different systems )
2. general configuration
3. setting up bookmarks in emacs
4. Creating some scripts that aren't there by default (eg. /etc/rc.d/rc.local_shutdown)

I can imagine how useful it can be for administering a number of machines.

Networking :: Wireless Setup In Slackware 13.1 64 Bit

Sep 16, 2010

I have tried to get my wireless network setup for 5 nights now, with the same results. Everything in my system automatically installs during the initial installation, except wireless, which I have run into in the past with older pc's. This install however (from 13.1 install dvd) seems to not cooperate properly with the rest of my computer. After installing wicd, I attempt to connect to the wireless network. Immediately after, wicd shows in the activity bar 'flushing dns' and syslog spews out two notifications at the lower right. That's it. From there it hangs and will not terminate cleanly. If I log out from there, I cannot get back into my x window system. Startx merely creates an Auth file and fails to load, saying that it's already active on 0. Then, if I run shutdown -r now, the system only goes as far as disconnecting remote drives and then hangs as well. I have to perform a hard boot at that point. The only thing that circumvents this, is to installpkg remove wicd. After wicd's removal, then I can shutdown -r now and reboot, reenter X and everything acts normal - until a wicd install. Any thoughts, suggestions, anything?

Please be aware, that I am not familiar with outputting data into a file like in the other posts I've seen here, so if you need the output, please include the commands necessary.

Slackware :: Adding A Volume To A LUKS/LVM Setup?

Mar 21, 2010

I have been following Alien Bob's README_CRYPT.TXT on the install disk and playing around with LUKS and LVM as highlighted in the section Combining LUKS and LVM. I got this working following the examples in the readme however I now wish to add another volume to the volume group. I have got this working and extended the group with an encrypted volume so it's now bigger. I want the two included physical volumes in the volume group (which are both encrypted) to be opened on bootup.

As it is now I am prompted for a password for the first physical volume (the passwords are set to be the same) and that opens and boots the volume. It has a problem with the second PV I have added and doesn't open this. There are errors on boot up about this and pvdisplay give this:

Code:

Slackware :: Choosing Hardware For A Test Setup?

Mar 17, 2010

I'm designing a multi-machined system that is supposed to resemble a failover redundant web&&databaseserver. I think I have the theory pretty well figured out (which means I'll run into a lot of unexpected problems )... but my concern is this:

I need some extra hardware, and I can buy three PII's for almost no money, or a couple of PIII's that cost apiece what the PII's cost in total. Is there a good reason to choose one over the other? One day in the distant future the setup will go live on x64 hardware. So I'm hoping to transport as much of the configuration of the test setup to the new setup. Would that be a concern somehow?

EDIT: Maybe I should explain, it does not really have to perform in any sense, but prove workload gets evenly distributed between two (or more) machines and that it can handle it if the plug gets pulled from a machine.

Slackware :: Boot Into Dual Monitor Setup ?

Jun 15, 2011

I created a dual monitor setup in Slack 13.37 using the KDE systemsettings -> Monitor Setup function. (Sadly I had to rebuild ~/.kde in the process, but that's a different story.)

I verify that ~/.kde/share/config/krandrrc contains the new monitor setup (both screens active). I have saved a startup session with krandrtray running. However, when I logon, the system always starts with both screens in clone mode. I always have to go into systemsettings or krandrtay and redo the dual monitor configuration.

Is there a better way? Do I have to create a suitable xorg.conf (which I will try when I get home) or is there another way to boot into the dual config automatically?
