I just updated to Slackware 13.1 last night (clean installation). However, when it came to setting up LILO, I chose "no" to the UTF setup when I usually choose "yes." I think choosing no put the line below in LILO.conf:

What's the LILO setting if one chooses "yes" instead of "no"?
I'm trying to take my current windows7 (x64) setup and make it into a dual-boot setup with slackware 13.0 (x32) and am hitting a brickwall. I guess I would like to know if I can salvage the situation without formating my windows drive. I fully intend to, but I had hoped to not do it this month. I'd like to get dual boot going so I can master it and acquire all the files/drivers I'll want and then format and do it 100% right next time.
Currently I have windows setup on a 3x 500gb Raid0 onboard array which itself has been flawless. After I shrunk my current partition size to give me about 25gb of free space I proceeded to setup Linux, and I was unable to perform the cfdisk portion for partitioning the array for Linux.
I tried using cfdisk:
/dev/hdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)
/dev/sdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)
I even attempted to locate with: cat proc/partition and tried using cfdisk on every device it located. It always said it was either an unknown partition table and should I start at zero, or bad partition. I was of course too concerned over my windows setup (which has almost 1tb of stuff I have not backed up) to go any further into the unknown.
PS: I have used Slackware before, back at 8.1, 10, and even a very brief interlude at 12.0, this is my first attempt on this computer however with 13.0, it is currently running fine on my laptop and my PS3 (Laptop is even dual booting 7/Slack13. Albeit without raid)

I have been away from linux for some years, but now I'm once again back with Ubuntu 10.04. I used to run Gentoo in 2000 and knew my commands, but now that the world of linux has progressed a bit further, aren't there many new commands to learn? Do you know a list of linux shell commands that are in broad use now and which didn't exist 10 years ago?
View 12 Replies View RelatedSo I've been researching this on my new NAS. I just tried to register the IP on the new system to have an issue pop up that says:
"msk0: watchdog timeout (missed Tx interrupts) -- recovering"
The error repeats then ends with no set IP. I tried the loader.conf fix but I cannot write to the system its installed on (embedded on a harddrive + data + swap) but it gives me a issue with write privileges which I thought would have been fixed by chmod +w /cf.
I just tried to updated my UBUNTU 10.04 to 10.10.I missed the page where I was asked to reuse the current GRUB information.The system hung after trying to load the new GRUB.I rebooted, and got an error about Configuration defaults for gnome power configuration not correct.I googled this, and have lost of disk space. The other suggestion was to remove and reinstall the gnome power app.I am not sure if this is the real problem, or if it is something to do with GRUB.There is some information on the system that I don't want to loose. I can get to a system console.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI tried a 9.10 -> 10.04 upgrade that went fail. I can now get it to the login screen where it gives a hard freeze. Same with recovery. I can get to a command line, but not with networking so
So I finally said screw it, I'm going to doa fresh install. I downloaded and burned 10.04 at work. Not, it is giving me an installer error when I boot from it, but then it will load the desktop from the LiveCD.
All I really want to do is grab some data that I didn't get when I backed up by home directory, then I can go back and do a fresh install. I can even download a new 10.04 CD if I need to because the installation files are screwed up or something.
The problem is that some of the files have permissions on that that show as an 'X' on the icon and it won't let me copy them to my USB backup drive.
How can I copy the files marked with an 'X' that have this permission issue?
No, not Arnold S.I'm talking about the one from slackbuilds.org. It's not just another terminal emulator. It's got a cool feature of broadcasting the input to all (or selected windows). If it's a well known and used feature, than I'm sorry. I read about it a couple of days ago and soon it proved a big time-saver.
As all my systems are almost identical (selection of software, /home/ directory structure, program configuration, etc) I used terminator to set up my new shiny Slackware64 13.1 systems.The 'broadcast' function of terminator mirrors your input to other terminator windows (ssh sessions to other machines). That way I didn't have to configure it three times on three computers. I know that one can write a script to automate most of things, but sometimes there are interactive steps which would not work in a script.
It was especially useful in:
1. using sbopkg (3 simultaneous instances doing exactly the same thing on different systems )
2. general configuration
3. setting up bookmarks in emacs
4. Creating some scripts that aren't there by default (eg. /etc/rc.d/rc.local_shutdown)
I can imagine how useful it can be for administering a number of machines.
i would like to set up a conky setting at my work so when employees call me for questions they can just give me the info that is visually on the screen from conky that i want instead of having them look for it, i have done some conky in ubuntu , it is very easy , just install it then enter codes in the text editor, and BAM done, now on opensuse looking at this thread Conky - Hardware Monitor it looks ALOT harder, is there a easier way around this big mess of codes and what not.

I am using squid proxy server for internet access,
in my office all are using laptop through wifi , so i need to configure the browser proxy setting for accessing internet.
is there any way to setup automatically get the proxy setting as dhcp. I have tried transparent proxy but no success.
I yesterday installed Slackware and I am quite impressed. I have been using Ubuntu for a year and decided to move on. My wireless worked fine in Ubuntu but it seems that it needs some configuration for Slackware.Note that my home network WiFi has no password or whatever. System settings which shows nothing relating to printing and Office Org printer administration.In the latter Office org printer admin shows "generic printer"..My printer is HP 5P. and I choose the option 5P/MP.Then next step asks me to: enter a command line for the appropriate device. I'm having problems getting my Canon MP-210 printer/scanner recognized as a scanner device in Slackware 13.0.CUPS setup was a breeze - in less than two seconds it was installed and within 10 more seconds it was printing a test page.Its URI is here, according to CUPS:

reading through the documentation for pk2cmd, required for using the PICkit2 programmer. I aim to install using the source, and thus libusb-dev is needed. The docs says that the runtime is usually included with the distro but the dev-part is not. It makes my head spin and that's why I am asking. The programmer shows up fine with lsusb,I see it as/dev/bus/usb/001/006So, basically, as I understand it, the device need the proper rights to be used by a regular user. But how do I do that?
I'm trying to set up my system to act as a vnc so I can access it remotely via a vnc viewer on my android phone. I've never tried this before but from what I've found online, with KDE4 a lot of the usual vnc server programs won't work correctly. Anyone have any tips for getting it to work? It doesn't necessarily have to be vnc. If there's an alternative method to remote control of a computer, that will work too.

I have set JAVA_HOME in my /etc/profile, like this:
But when I login in with my user name and type env on the command line, I get for JAVA_HOME the following:
Also, in my /etc/profile I have put the path to my java in the PATH variable, like this:
And when I type env when I login, then the PATH variable contains correctly the path to the jdk (as I have put it into /etc/profile).
I expect that after I have set everything as I want in /etc/profile, and restart the computer then what I have set will be relevant and when I login and type env, I will get values to the variables equal to those I have set in /etc/profile. Why it does not happen?
I have particularly a problem with a Java application, which I want to run. When I type ant, I get:

I tried setting up my printer, HP Deskkjet D2660, using CUPS. I enabled the CUPS service and configure the printer through it. But when I try to test print, my printer wont print.
Now, i tried to look at the net for possible answer and somewhere, I read that my printer needs the newer version of hplip than the one included with the default slackware 13.0 install.
1. Do i really need to update hplip just to make my printer work? Do anyone uses the same printer model and make it work without updating the said package?
2. If i really have to update it, is there any Slackbuild script I can use to make the hplip-3.10.6.tar.gz into slackware package? I prefer creating package than installing using make.
First and foremost please give me your opinions on what I want/should to do for security. I would like to set up my system sp that the session times out and requires a password to unlock the screen. Also I would like a firewall and maybe virus detection just in case. I want to set up a guest user with minimal to no privileges. How should I go about doing this?

I am having some trouble setting up a dual boot with Win XP and Slackware 13.1. Lilo lists both Linux and Windows, but when I select Windows, all I get is a black screen. I have two hard drives, sda1 and sdb1. I first installed Windows on sdb1 (it is a smaller, older drive). I then installed Slackware on sda1 and selected to install Lilo on the MBR. I'm guessing that by doing this, I wrote over the Windows information that was already there. Could this be my problem? I feel like this should be an easy fix, but I just don't know where to start in order to fix it. If it helps, here is the end of my lilo.conf file.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed slackware-current (not the most recent one) and since then I have not been able to get airmon-ng to set the channel of my network card correctly. I don't think it's a driver issue because the kernel from my previous install was the same as the current kernel (2.6.35.7) and it worked fine on my Atheros AR9285 Wireless card. Now every time I try to deauthenticate, it says the card is in channel -1 and won't work. One of the differences now is that I ran netconfig (I never ran this before). Sometimes when I run it, it complains about dhcpcd service.
View 10 Replies View RelatedMy DVD player is on /dev/hdc but when I put 'xine /dev/hdc' on the command line I get an error saying 'There is no demuxer plugin available to handle /dev/hdc'. If I use the mount point /media/DVD instead of /dev/hdc it works fine. I am trying to get DVDs to play automatically but I can't see how to get xine to look for /media/DVD instead of /dev/hdc. I have tried changing the location on the Settings -> Media tab, and the line which says 'directory a media in dvd device will be mounted' in ~/.xine/config but neither worked.
