Slackware :: Slackware Current Freezes At Splash Screen / Fix It?

Mar 16, 2011

I have been using slackware since version 10.1 and really like it. I have never had a problem until lately, version 13.1 has been stable as a rock for me. The first 2 or 3 updates to current ran well but then the problem started. After installation Slackware would get to the splash screen and bring up the first picture of a disk drive then just hang and never go any further. I do have a good burn on the dvd, have checked the md5 and burned at 4x. then slack 13.37 does the same thing. this is on 4 different computers with several different video boards.

Slackware :: Intel 945 And Current / Getting Blank Screen?

May 23, 2010

I upgraded one of my laptops from 13.0 to current yesterday. I has an intel graphics card:

Code:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

After all the package upgrading, removing obsolete packages, running lilo etc, I rebooted and I was really taken by surprise. Apparently, this certain intel graphics card doesn't work right with KMS. The boot process starts, I get to see the two tux twins and a few lines of boot messages, but as soon as KMS kicks in, everything goes completely blank. It doesn't crash or freeze or anything, the boot process continues, but it's all blank.

What's completely weird is that I have another laptop, which reports exactly the same graphics card, but KMS works fine there with current!

Anyway, I did some google search and I found that it's a common problem. There was a suggestion to remove any vga=... lines from lilo.conf, but that didn't help at all. Adding nomodeset to my boot options, disabled KMS, and I was able to boot to init 3, just like in 13.0. The problem was that then, it wasn't possible to launch X, because the intel driver that is included in current requires KMS to work!

So, after trying out a few different versions of the intel driver, I found that anything from 2.8.x and down wouldn't compile and that anything after and including 2.10.x require KMS. The only versions that would work are 2.9.0 and 2.9.1, which seem to have an identical effect here. They both work, but I have artifacts using my favorite mouse cursor theme, I get a black box instead of the mouse cursor. Not a big deal and choosing another theme fixed that too.

What I'm thinking is that probably more people will have the same problem and nothing is more frustrating than a completely blank screen. Maybe it would be a good idea to keep the 2.9.x versions of the driver in /extra. That and perhaps also add a note in the UPGRADE docs about adding nomodeset if you have an intel graphics card and you get a blank screen.

Slackware :: Image / Icon Trouble After Slackware-current Upgrade

Jan 22, 2010

I recently upgraded to slackware-current from Slackware 13 via slackroll, and have only encountered one problem. My file manager no longer thumbnails images, and icons (mostly PNG) aren't appearing no matter what GTK theme is set. Running from the command line produces no errors, and when brought up in something else (say feh /path/to/icon.png) it works perfectly. This is the only hitch I have encountered so far. The same thing happens with emoticons in Pidgin. Does anyone know of a fix?

Slackware :: Can't Boot - Start X The Screen Goes Black And Freezes

Apr 6, 2011

I installed Slackware 13.1 a little bit ago, played around with it, performed an upgrade with Slackpkg, messed around with some settings, and chose a new theme. I had set the runlevel to 4 and when I rebooted after choosing a new login theme the screen just went black at the point where the login prompt should have appeared. I couldn't even get into the CLI. Using a LiveCD, I set the run level to 3 again and was able to log in, but when I try to start X the screen goes black and freezes again, so I believe my new login theme is the culprit. Is there a way to change to the default login theme from the CLI?

Slackware :: Framebuffer - I915 - And Current And Asus Eeepc - Halfway Through Boot Time The Screen Goes Blank

Mar 10, 2010

Got an Asus eeepc 900a. Runs Intel 915 graphics. Upgraded to slackware current last week. X would not start. Based on info here, I reverted back to earlier libdrm and xf86-video-intel. That got it working again.

Updated Slackware current again today. I think I got a new kernel. Now, halfway through boot time, the screen goes blank, then comes back and the font is tiny. Gone into framebuffer mode. If I start X, it just freezes. Nothing but a reboot will get out of it.

I have vga=normal in lilo.conf, but I read that this is no longer used. I can find no way to turn off framebuffer mode. From other threads here, I have tried append="i915.modeset=1" in lilo.conf. Has no effect.

I could revert Slackware to 13.0 from current, and that would make the eeepc useful again. Is there anything else I should try?

Hardware :: Slackware Nvidia Driver Install - Freezes With An Underscore In Top Left Hand Of Screen And Can't Switch Between Tty's

Mar 17, 2010

Fairly recent enough system. nvidia 6200.

Full install of slackware. then i use these instructions to install drivers:

Quote:

Install nvidia driver in Slackware Linux

Before begin the nvidia driver installation, you must make a copy of the original /etc/X11/xorg.conf as a backup. Use the copy command example below:

If you choose to install the nvidia driver that you download from nvidia website, you must close kde or x-window and install the driver from Linux command line terminal.

Copy the driver to the directory that you placed all third party software such as /usr/local/src. This is not necessary, just a good habit. To install the driver, run the nvidia driver with the sh command like in the example below.

Now, you just need to answer all the questions to configure nvidia driver and the nvidia installation program will do the driver and kernel installation for you.

When i startx the computer freezes with an underscore in the top left hand of screen and i can't switch between tty's.

I know the pc and card work fine with other linux and win os's.

Ubuntu :: Splash Screen Freezes / Stopit To Do So?

Mar 5, 2010

I am running Ubuntu karmic with Gnome desktop

I rebooted it as a package (GRASS GIS) wouldn't open properly, the splash screeen appeared but it appears to freeze and does not get to the login screen. I have tried to boot in safe mode but pressing ESC at grub doesn't work and Ctrl+Alt+F1 also fails to invoke anything. I can connect remotely via ssh. I have tried to remove Gnome desktop so I can just go straight to commandline but it still brings up the splash screen, I removed desktop using sudo apt-get remove gnome-desktop it said it did.

So why did this happen, last night I logged in via ssh and x-win server started a screen and did some work, the x-win server I lost my internet connection so putty aborted, this morning I couldn't connect to the screen so I did screen -wipe then rebooted as another package kept exiting.

any help much appreciated, this has happened at a vital time during my PhD and I need ubuntu back asap! In the meanwhile I am working via ssh with a slow Internet connection so not ideal!

In terms of what I changed before the problem happened, I don't recall changing any system settings. On possibility is my changing things to skip the login screen and go strait to my account, but I believe I had done that a few shutdown/restarts before.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Freezes At Splash Screen Upon Loading?

Dec 21, 2010

I was not able to install any version of Ubuntu. Everytime when the splash screen would appear, the computer would freeze and no hard drive activity would be present. The only way was to use the alternate install version of Ubuntu 10.10. Though, the splash screen problem persists. After the Ubuntu boot screen disappears, the splash screen appears with the coursor. About 3 seconds later it becomes unresponsive and the hard drive light stops showing activity. After reading a lot, I think it's my video card driver. I'm a complete newbie, so any commands need to be written out so I can just type in and cross my fingers. I can boot into the GRUB recovery mode. I log in and have a text based setup at this point. You know, I can type sudo commands and all that jazz. How can I fix my video? The graphics is not integrated. It's a 32mb nvidia TNT2 PRO.

Slackware :: Take Current Windows7 (x64) Setup And Make It Into A Dual-boot Setup With Slackware 13.0?

Jan 24, 2010

I'm trying to take my current windows7 (x64) setup and make it into a dual-boot setup with slackware 13.0 (x32) and am hitting a brickwall. I guess I would like to know if I can salvage the situation without formating my windows drive. I fully intend to, but I had hoped to not do it this month. I'd like to get dual boot going so I can master it and acquire all the files/drivers I'll want and then format and do it 100% right next time.

Currently I have windows setup on a 3x 500gb Raid0 onboard array which itself has been flawless. After I shrunk my current partition size to give me about 25gb of free space I proceeded to setup Linux, and I was unable to perform the cfdisk portion for partitioning the array for Linux.

I tried using cfdisk:
/dev/hdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)
/dev/sdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)

I even attempted to locate with: cat proc/partition and tried using cfdisk on every device it located. It always said it was either an unknown partition table and should I start at zero, or bad partition. I was of course too concerned over my windows setup (which has almost 1tb of stuff I have not backed up) to go any further into the unknown.

PS: I have used Slackware before, back at 8.1, 10, and even a very brief interlude at 12.0, this is my first attempt on this computer however with 13.0, it is currently running fine on my laptop and my PS3 (Laptop is even dual booting 7/Slack13. Albeit without raid)

Fedora :: Amarok Freezes During Splash Screen FC12/Gnome?

Jan 3, 2010

Just installed Fedora 12 stable release without checking office/productivity, server, or developer "package options". Running Gnome.Used yum to get Amarok on here, and it freezes almost immediately every time I try to open it. The splash shows, a program shows up on the window-manager panel labeled "KDED Glob..." and the system freezes. Mouse, keyboard, all unresponsive. I had FC12 Beta on this exact system and Amarok worked fine. Noting that KDED Glob is probably part of KDE, and that I did not install KDE, I thought maybe Amarok depends on a KDE component that the repo did not pick up as a dependency. Tried to install as much of the mainstream KDE components as I could, with no change.
