I am playing with SalixOS which is supposed to be entirely compatible with Slack. I've never put Slack proper on this laptop. It's run Ubuntu and Mandriva both and the volume wheel always works. It does not seem to be recognized in Salix. I figure the fix will be the same in Salix as Slackware so I'm asking here. The laptop is an A205 Toshiba Satellite.
View 2 RepliesI'm not a distro hopper, but I have an old laptop at home (a Toshiba Satellite 2140CDS with AMD K6-2 processor, 192 MB RAM, and 20 GB IDE HDD) that I dropped Tiny Core Linux to see if it would run. And run it did, so I figured I would install Slackware (same as my desktop) onto the hard drive. I had to use the huge.s kernal since hugesmp.s complains about a missing function and then stops booting.
The problem is Slack 13.1 doesn't even recognize the hard drive (or CD drive it would seem). There's nothing under /dev that looks like sd* (or hd*). Nothing in /etc/fstab either. I don't have the dmesg of either Slack 13.1 install CD or tiny core handy, but I noticed in TC's dmesg it referred ide_pci_generic just before showing the hard drive and CD drive info. Nothing like that in Slack's dmesg.
I looked through some of the doc's and I understand all drives are now SCSI (real or emulated) so I should see sda and sdb (for my HDD and CD) but I don't. Both TC and Slack complained about some PCI memory conflict but I don't have the specifics handy. None-the-less, TC was able to see my drives so I don't think that's the problem (in this case).
I'm in a hurry to get the wireless to work on my Toshiba A205. Link to system data: [URL]. Didn't have to use anything like ndiswrapper on ubuntu, so thinking its an easy todo here - just need a little prod or two in right direction. In the meantime I'll take a look at the data myself and see if I ain't smarter than I think.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI apologize because I know this is really a worn out question, but I have a reason for asking. My wife gave me this laptop in December 2003 as a Christmas gift. At the time it was state of the art and she spent over ?1100 on it. It is a Samsung V25, P4 2.8Ghz 1GB memory 40GB HD. It still has the original XP home OS on it, and when I got a new laptop a couple of years ago, I let her have it to use because she refuses to use Linux and she did not have a laptop. Well, she stopped using it when she got netbook and it has been jut lying around. After so many years of use, as you might expect Windows now just crawls with so much crap on it and is very unpredictable (might work might not.)
My thought is that she might start using it again (and I certainly would), if I could show her that there is still plenty of life left in it. I KNOW that Slack will be faster, but before I wipe the drive (she is still kind of sentimental about me doing that), and I want to see if I can get a couple of comments about the hardware and what trouble I might expect. I ask because I have tried dozens of live CDS, and some work and some don't. For example, the newest Knoppix would not run (freezes when it tries to start X.) Anyway, the specs are

This thing has most of the goodies that loaded laptops offered in those days (i.e. 1394 port). I am most concerned about the display because I have read about others who have had difficulty with Intel graphics. It is my intention to -Current on it, since it runs great on my main laptop. I have run into the following problem, after I installed the proprietary AMD/ATI driver for my videocard I've been unable to wake up my laptop after suspend to RAM, it suspends ok (I guess?) but when I try to wake it up the screen doesn't turn on so I have to manually shut down the laptop.
before installing the proprietary driver, it worked ok
the videocard is a Radeon HD 3200, and the processor is an AMD Turion X2 Mobile
It seems that when I adjust the volume with the volume wheel on the side of my notebook, the OS messes up. Nothing is clickable, I cannot type anything, in order to get a working computer again I have to hard reset it.Why is this happening? I have never experienced this. I have a Toshiba Satellite that I recently installed Ubuntu on.

I can even log in and run a init 4 session on kde.But with no apparent reason hard crashes (completely frozen system) hit the system aleatory (never last more than 5 minutes)

I am an experienced Linux user, but have never used Salix before. I have a root account set up on my other Linux distros, but can not figure it out using Salix. The reason I want a root account in Salix because I believe in freedom of choice, and my choice always was and always will be to have a root account set up so I can login as root. I am aware of the risk involed in creating a root account.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed SalixOS on my laptop just to play with when I'm bored. My laptop is nothing special, it's a couple of years old has a pentium dual core t2390 at 1.86Ghz and 3 GB ddr2 RAM with Intel video.
I then have a beast i7 920 clocked to 3331Mhz 6GB RAM, and an NVIDIA GT220. Full screen ..... at 720p is fine unless I move the mouse, then the whole picture freezes. Persistant mouse movement will freeze the screen for a few minutes. This machine runs both slack64 current and slack13 32 bits.
The slack box does much better with 32 bit flash than 64, but it still doesn't do nearly as well as the laptop.
With Salix and Slack being so close to each other supposedly I can't figure out why the hardware seems to be irrelevant. The only thing I can think of would be the video codecs installed by Salix, whereas I built a bunch of codecs myself for Slack.
I compiled it from source, i installed it via slackbuild but it didn't work. When i go imlib-config --version it shows me the old one, and when i try to install giblib it tells me that imlib2 is not installed. I watched the output from the installing of imlib2 and i realized something's wrong: there are several suspicious warnings :

I have downloaded the packages from Slackbulids and installed also the required packages from slacky.eu but still it says that probably pyqt is not installed. I have installet latest Sip and latest pyqt ver 4.

Problem - this computer has no cd and won't boot from a USB stick when the hard drive is connected (go figure...disconnect hard drive, it boots from usb stick) no matter how I set the bios.
I have a copy of the Slack DVD copied to the local hard drive. I can configure lilo to boot from ubnkern on the slack dvd file set, but that just boots debian using that particular kernel - surprisingly it boots, but is not how to get to slack setup. Given the above setup and restrictions, how would I go about getting to slack setup? I'm kinda stuck here, trying to figure out what to do next.

Tried to install Centos 5 (2.6.18-8-el5) and when I went through the install process, X Server failed to start so I had to go thorough the command line install. Once the install completed, it only booted to console.
The default resolution for this laptop is 1280X800 but I dont know if that is why or not. if anyone has a clue about my issue, please let me know.. I really dont want to install windows.
I am running the latest slackware and have for a while been trying to install banshee. So... I also installed gnome and that seems to work. I have added dependency after dependency... and now I am finally stuck. I have searched the web for gconf-sharp-2.0. i might be blind, but i have not found anywhere that i can download it from and install.

I wanted to put it on my older Toshiba laptop (2003) for my little cousin to use to get on the internet and play games. When I boot from the CD the ubuntu logo comes up runs. It ask me my language then goes to the screen where I can choose "Try Ubuntu without installing it" "Install Ubuntu Now" etc. Ive tried clicking both install and try both launch the ubuntu logo it runs for about 4 min and then hangs on a black screen. I know it isn't the cd because I can use it on any other computer and it works. This Toshiba cannot boot from a jump drive though so that choice is out.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI made a full install of Slackware and have been using one of my boxes as an Apache web server. I recently tried to install Joomla, the PHP CMS software, and when I ran the pre-install requisite checker (The second step of the installation), the installer notified me that I do not have MySQL support. I find this especially strange as I've made webpages using PHP that made use of MySQL databases.
My pre-post research has lead me to several other people with the same problem. Half were using windows, and just had not uncommented the "extension mysql.so" line in the php.ini file. The other half solved their problem by installing their distro's php-mysql module. According to what I'd read, you can still use MySQL if you don't have that module installed, but Joomla does need it to be able to use the MySQL database.
I've searched long and hard for this plugin/add-on/module for Slackware, but to no avail. It's available in RPM format, and I know that it's possible to use rpm2tgz to convert these files, but I don't know exactly what the issue is, and if Slackware may be different. I don't want to install that and then find out that it overwrote something that I'd needed.
I have recently acquired "3RVX" for my windows gaming rig and have fallen in love with the fast, customizable volume adjustment offered by holding the windows key (or "super") and rolling the mouse wheel.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with Thunderbird 3 on Ubuntu 10.04. When starting TB3 the 'mail account setup' box appears but can't type anything inthere... I can close the setup box... the main window is very unresponsive but cosing works also immediately. I fisrst did upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 having the problem. Thinking the upgrade might have gone wrong I did a complete fresh install on that laptop, even verified the CD with md5sum before installing. After the fresh and clean install the problem remains the same.
The machine having the problem is a Toshiba laptop Tecra S1 with 1GB of RAM. I do not experience any other problem with Ubuntu 10.04 on that machine, everything else runs like a charm, there also was no error during installation... I think this problem is related to the Toshiba Tecra S1 laptop because other machines I own don't have problems with TB3.
