So, upgraded and then installed slim b/c I wanted to have a nice login screen but now when logging in all I get is the background, no menu no panels no nothing, had to manually create a shortcut to firefox to get help, anyone know how to manually start the menu and/or how to fix.
View 5 Repliesyesterday i installed slim login manager on my computer (eee pc 1018p, ubuntu 11.04), and now it cannot get passed the ubuntu loading screen (with orange dots underneath) when booting. i tried booting into recovery mode and that didn't work either. i also left the computer trying to boot overnight and that didn't work.
basically, during this loading screen that should eventually bring you to the login screen, i can alt+tab to see the progress of the load. the progress is stuck on
Is there anything I can do from grub to remove slim?or, is there any way I can access my ubuntu partition and save all my files?
i've posted and read and been through metacity forums, and still cant find a answer to slimming down the Gnome menu. The only way i can get the list shorter (less wasted space between menu entries, going top downwards) is a certain GTK theme (LK OS-K Blue) but i dont care for the metallic theme. i have spend 6 hours tonight tweaking .gtkrc files here and there, with varying results, the spacing is really horrible and makes an otherwise good desktop look horrible.
the fonts are small, unused entries are hidden, resolution is 1600x900. it can be done via a certain Metacity theme, but x=thickness and y=thickness & Treeviews in gtkrc have either no effect, or affect the wrong widgets, scrollbars,buttons or checkboxes. etc. i have compared both themes gtkrc files side by side,too. no progress. i have been chasing this UI 'feature' for months, but now i'm getting fed up. anyone have any better / more detailed info ?
how to configure my customized Slim DM to overwrite the installed /etc/rc.d/rc.4 script with the one I put in my slim build from source.However, it just installs it as rc.4.new and not rc.4 why?would it be easier to instead configure the rc.4 that initially gets installed?if so, what slack pkg has the /etc/rc.d/* folder??I'm doing this with Absolute 13.0.8 install cd as its installed size is too big for my lappy hdd and it comes with both gdm and xdm and I want slim.
So, I removed many many pkgs from install iso, got it down to 370MB and only problem is after install my rc.4 is in /etc/rc.d but its named rc.4.new and there is also the original rc.4 thats my only issue
I was trying to set up my Xfce desktop on a fresh install.
I personally dislike Xdm, which is given as the default login manager, and would prefer to use Slim instead.
It is possible to install it using the Package Search feature (it's listed under the Contrib repository), but I haven't been able to set it as the default login manager (I wasn't able to find such a setting in /etc/sysconfig).
I had Slim working with the latest -Current updates, but that was with a package I built before updating.
I borked my system yesterday and had to do a fresh install. Now I can't get Slim working.
I tried running the Slim SlackBuild from Slackbuilds.org, and it failed without giving any errors. I figured out that the problem was with this section:

The strip commands were failing and caused the SlackBuild to exit, so I added '|| true' to them.

Not sure why this is needed in -Current and not 13, maybe because of Bash 4.1?
Anyway, now the package builds successfully, but Slim won't start. My system just hangs at a black screen after 'Starting up X11 session manager'...Has anybody been able to get Slim working in -Current?
I have created a custom linux distro originating from the ubuntu server edition and have slim as the login manager, and openbox as the window manager. When it goes into power save mode and turns off the monitor and I move the mouse to wake it up it just goes to the shell with a mouse cursor on it. How can I get it to go right back to the openbox window manager?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed the Global Menu Bar applet for my top panel, thus removing the menu bar from most, if not, all of my apps on Ubuntu. I removed the applet, mainly because of how God-Awful and inconvenient it was. Now, I don't have any menu bars on my apps!
View 3 Replies View Relatedbeen using 11.2 with KDE on a Sony laptop since 11.2 was released always ran perfect suddenly I can't login, I get to the login screen type in password it begins to load my desktop, then fails and dumps me back to the login screen I can login as root, all my stuff is there (under /home/me) I tried changing my password, no luck I went to run level 3 and there I can login just fine seems to be something with my KDE profile
any ideas where I might find some error messages telling me what's going on?
this seemed to happen when I was running "blender" and making the machine do some heavy number crunching, it actually locked up.
System was fine with :Ubuntu 9.04 (had also installed kde )then....I wanted to try some change to gdm so i downloaded gdm while building it , it asked "PAM" libraries to be installed so i installed PAM ... but ignored the instruction to reinstall SHADOW (library i guess..),Now :on booting system i get login menu but i am not able to login , it says some critical error occured

I have installed Matlab into /opt/matlab and the file to run the program is located in /opt/matlab/bin and is called matlab. I created a file:

and placed it in /usr/bin.
From there, I can run matlab by typing 'matlab' in a Terminal window. My problem is that I created a link in my start menu with the command 'matlab' but all I get is the splash screen for 5-10 secs then the program crashes out. However, when I run it from a Terminal, it loads up just fine.
I've just installed Lubuntu 10.10 to an Asus A2400H laptop. It has a Celeron 2.6 Ghz CPU and 512mb RAM. In the past I have installed Ubuntu and more recently Xubuntu 9.10 and 10.04. This time round I wanted to try out Lubuntu to get more speed out of this laptop but it's giving me crazy problems.When I run the Live CD all seems to work well and quick and there are no problems I can see. Then having installed it -- no errors during install -- when it boots up the fan goes at 100%, the only items on the menu are log off and something else of no use, but neither work. I can't load any of the main programs, but I can get to terminal and the update manager works, although it works extremely slowly.
I typed the 'top' command from the terminal and it says CPU usage is only 35% and only half the memory is in use, and no swap file.I have tried a reinstall and it's exactly the same. I've done the 'check disk for errors' and given the CD lens a clean because sometimes this has caused problems in the past, but it doesn't seem to be the case here given there are no errors during install (I watched the whole install... all 50 minutes of it).I have previously istalled LXDE on this laptop side-by-side with Xubuntu and it did have some fan issues and bugs but still worked for the most part, so I would have thought just having the one system would create less conflict.
So out of the blue this morning when i started ubuntu and logged in the top bar and bottom navigation bars wouldn't load. I did recently uninstall some software,ut i had successfully restarted and logged in multiple times since. So im not really sure what is going on.

I'm running Maverick, trying to change my input method from IBus to Anthy (Japanese) but whenever I click on System > Preferences > Keyboard Input Methods, it won't load the preferences window. It'll say "Starting..." on the taskbar but then disappear. The usual keyboard shortcut does nothing
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am using Ubuntu 10.10, manually installed, on a Dell Studio 15 laptop, dual booting with Windows 7.While a few kids were playing nearby where I was working, one of the pillows they were playing with hit my laptop's screen and moved the screen's hinge backwards, applying pressure past where the hinge ends. This didn't seem to cause any physical harm to the computer, but I moved away from where they were playing, and in the process, shut the laptop, putting it into sleep mode. I opened the laptop and entered my password to unlock it. About half a second after entering my password and displaying the desktop and open windows, it brought up the password prompt again, as if I'd just opened my laptop up and removed it from standby, although I had not in fact touched it since I had entered my password a mere half second before. I thought that that was strange, and then attempted to continue my work. However, although the mouse worked fine, when I attempted to apply a keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Alt+2, which runs a 2-finger scroll script and has to be run every time I take the computer out of standby), Ubuntu didn't register it (I didn't touch the keyboard otherwise, although I should have checked whether it worked all =).
I tried it again, and it still did not apply the script. Then I thought, "Oh, the pillow must have knocked something out of whack. I'll restart." When I restarted, grub loaded as usual, but the timeout ("loading the primary in Xs." sort of thing) that it usually displays did not display this time. I didn't notice it at the time; I selected Ubuntu, and it appeared to be loading it, removing the grub menu, but then hung. I waited 5 minutes for the computer to display the login screen, but it did not, so I restarted again, thinking that it might just be something stupid. It didn't work again, hanging again. I tried this with both the most recent linux kernel and the second most recent kernel, neither of which worked. But what was interesting is that Windows 7, which is also on the grub menu, loaded and displayed perfectly, as did GRUB Invaders, a game that can be loaded directly from grub.After this little escapade, I thought something was just wrong in grub.cfg, and it somehow wasn't mapping the Ubuntu menu entries to the appropriate OS and kernel. So I loaded up a live CD, and attempted to look at the linux entries. These are the menu entries 10_linux, 00_header, and 20_linux_xen.

Usually when something is installed from the repos, it automatically provides a menu launch option. Sometimes not!I have installed the game rocksndiamonds . The game can be run by simply typing this into the terminal. But how can I add this to the other games in the menus ? ( I don't want my kids to have to use the terminal.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have created a boot floppy for an old machine. That machine has GRUB installed on its MBR and I would like to be able to chain load to that in the case where the floppy has been accidentally left in (in much the same way that the install CDs do for Ubuntu). If I use:

GRUB tells me this is an illegal device name. If I provide a partition number (e.g. hd0,0) then it is happy, but attempts to find the loader in the partition, not the MBR. Since the descriptions of "root" and "rootnoverify" both specify a device, rather than a partition.
i have Vista 64Bits Ultimate installed on an 1TB hard disk whit 3 partitons I have a 2nd 160GB HD in my system which i installed Ubuntu 10.4 on. All went ok, except after the installation finished and the system rebooted it booted straight into windows, whitout ever displaying GRUB. Now i found a way to boot either system, by using the bios and setting the applicable HD to 1st device. (or something similar)
Any way on how to solve this? keeping to have to enter the BIOS to select the HD and Thus OS i want to boot aint very practical. (im currently using ubuntu BTW)

ok I used apt get and installed kde and x org they don't load right but I'll try reconfiguring them and post if i still have troubleI just got Debian to install after a lot of attempts using a v506 DVD set, a 507 net CD, and a 507 kde cd1. The 507 Cd's never made it past the installing the core packages part. The DVD set decided to work this time but the select and install software part failed. I now have a working terminal and would like to install kde and the other Debian packages that come with it. What would be the best way to do this without rerunning the installer off the DVD?
The DVD's worked fine last month when I setup a friends laptop, so I'm thinking I have a bad DVDROM drive or have some how ruined the disks. more likely a bad drive given the newer CD wouldn't work.edit:I'm running a Compaq Presario SR1710NX Desktop PC (AMD Sempron 3400+ Processor, 256 MB RAM, 100 GB Hard Drive, CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive)also the Debian live CD works just fine on my system I just can't install from it

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently bumped the power cable on my debian server at home. The computer shutdown, and since then hasn't been feeling like going past grub. When I boot the computer it gets to the "Welcome to Grub!" screen, but doesn't load my menu. I booted into a live cd and the hard drive seems intact and accessible. I re-installed grub without any problems, but the same problem is happening. I tried running fsck, but it says that the "device or resource is busy while trying to open /dev/sda". I am kind of stumped and would prefer not to reinstall debian to get this box running.

1) linux......
2) linux......recovery...
3) mem test...
4) windows...
when 1) linux is selected it loads ubuntu properly but. but when i select 4) windows a black page with GRUB written on the top left corner of the page is displayed and will not take any command... the only option i can do is hardboot.
When I load into winXP I can see the files for winXP and win7. When I load into ubuntu I can only see winXP. i did a sudo update-grub and got the windows loader, which then shows me winXP and ubuntu. what i would love is one boot page that has listed winXP, win7, and ubuntu. FWIW this is an acer netbook, winXP is on D:/ and win7 is on F:/, i used the windows installer wubi for ubuntu 10.10.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Debian 6.01 on my PC. I have only 1 hdd and it has 3 partitions. On first there is windows 7 and on second ubuntu 10.10 and GRUB is installed to MBR and I can load both systems with no problems.As PC has no optical drive I was trying to install debian using USB stick but had no success. I was ready to give up when I've discovered that there is a W32 installer that I can run under Win 7. So I downloaded it and executed, it starts and download certain files and then it asks for reboot.
After reboot I can still chose between Win 7 and Ubuntu. If I chose win 7 I'm given a choice to run Windows or to continue setup for debian. Very well installer starts and I can chose all the classic stuff between languages etc. Then I come to a point where I need to choose partitions, ok as I have free 30 Gb partition i choose it for debian with settings:
Format in Ext4
Mount point: /
I already have a swap part that I can use. Done that I can start with selection of packages which goes fine and installs everything directly from debian mirrosrs. After that I choose GRUB to be installed into MBR and it goes fine. Some final steps and reboot.
After reboot GRUB offers me again Ubuntu or Win 7. So I can boot either Ubuntu or win 7 which gives me the same choice from before, Windoes or continue Debian setup. I tried doing the setup again with some repair options that it offers but still nothing happens.
System>Prefrences right? It's not there? Everywhere I look It says it should be there,.. well it's not... How can I add it manually? or where is the folder? I would like to edit my themes.. I have a theme manager, but it doesn't load any themes I download..
